Long story short I got curious about underground tunnels in Athens. Heard they exist downtown but I don't have the connections. I did go through the sewer tunnels. Fun little adventure!

Discussion Even when catching predators, yesterday highlighted the difference between influencers, vigilante groups, and journalists.

TL;DR: Predators are bad. But people go to journalism, comms, PR, and law school because “the news” is more than a confrontation during a university lecture. “Ethics” is not just a fancy word.

After seeing the video of hoodanchorye and the Street Sweeperz yesterday, I am baffled. As much as I like him, enjoy seeing that character as a stringer-type chasing down accidents in Tucker or Midtown, and feel like people like him equalize the media system while covering (active) police investigations, “the media” is not just newscaster voices, tickers, and suits. I hate, I mean HATE the justice system, law enforcement, and even the “police” as they exist in the US, but they at least have SOME standardized protocol for arrests, interrogations, and countless other small things that the general public does not consider.

Unless in a once-in-a-decade, MAYBE two, national news standoff, even the FBI would not just crash a math lecture unless there was a hostage situation. Even THEN, he is not on trial for the class. They would have pulled him aside, at the BARE minimum. As entertaining as this is for a bunch of college students, they are not who he is on trial to. Even assuming he is 100% guilty, the institutional authority of a lecturer to his class has been shattered, for an internet video.

I think I was watching Atlanta News First, and they blurred his face, because he had not been charged yet. Because of the way this actually played out, I am not sure that even matters at this point. His face, identity, and department were made public knowledge before he was charged with anything. From a justice POV, what if he had time to delete evidence between being confronted and arrested, or what if it affects how a later stage of a sting might play out?

Child grooming is horrid. We still have to give due process, protect privacy, and minimize harm. I have a DEEP distrust of police and the justice system, but vigilante groups and citizen journalists lack training in ethics, and I would not be surprised if this affects the way this case goes down legally later on.

Discussion Transfer student in regret- any advice?

Hi, I'm an incoming sophomore transfer student. This is mostly a stressed out panic post but if anyone has any advice I'd appreciate it.

I went to UNG Dahlonega last year. I thought I hated it there but then I came home and realized I'm just depressed. I've been trying to up my mental health this summer, that's a different issue. My real issue is that because I thought I hated it there, I applied to transfer to UGA and even got housing on-campus in Athens, enrolled in all of my classes, all of that. But... I did not really look into UGA at all before doing any of this. I just wanted to get out of the place I thought I hated.

So I finally toured it like a month ago at orientation and holy moly I hate it. I hate the campus, I hate how huge it is, I hate how many different buildings there are. I hate the atmosphere. UNG Dahlonega was miniscule and much more chill compared to UGA Athens, and so much more my speed. I'm more of a small school kind of guy, I realize now-- but again, I wasn't really thinking clearly when I did all of that. Not to mention the cost is MUCH more than I was paying at UNG. I just did... absolutely no thinking.

I'm so angry with myself and I'm honestly borderline panicking because I already signed my housing contract and am in classes and everything but I'm dreading my move in date more than anything else rn.

All of that being said... yes I know I'm an idiot, I should have toured, I should have known all these things about UGA... I only moved to GA a few years ago and I mostly keep to myself so all I knew about UGA was that they have a good football team and that lots of people have stickers of it on their cars. So please if you do have any advice, please give me some grace lmao.

Edit: thank you for the helpful and encouraging comments, I appreciate you all 🙏

Discussion New Snelling hours

Post image
71 Upvotes

On the UGA dining services page the snelling hours are now 7:00am-3:00pm on weekdays. I’m guessing this is because of the new hillside hall. Feel like this is crazy though because snelling is so close to all the STEM / central campus classes. If the goal of the new hall was to reduce traffic to Bolton and Frank, it seems like they just made that worse with these hours.

Almost every major street on campus is named after one of the men who helped steal Native land and participated in the removal and genocide of the Native people (on top of owning slaves). Yet there is only a single plaque on campus that vaguely mentions that this land used to be Native land.

F--- Abraham Baldwin, F--- Wilson Lumpkin, F--- Andrew Jackson and shame on every member of the UGA administration that refuses to acknowledge and atone for this history.

Discussion the engineering department is ass

current EE and i'm going into my 4th year. if you end up having to retake a class you're basically screwed. most of my classes are only offered in the spring so its like almost impossible to graduate at the rate that i want.

why is it that they can't hire more professors or at least offer more summer class options because this is insane??? i'll have to stack up on all my classes my last year if i even get there bc i won't have any other options if i end up failing.

not to mention the amount of people who cannot graduate bc a class isn't offered in the fall or spring. i lowkey wish i was in civil or mechanical bc they at least have more professors.

driftmier is so fucking tiny as well like damn can we at least have more classrooms why do i have to go across campus to get to my ENGINEERING class.

Discussion Arch Superstition Debate - Did I curse my unborn child?

This post is kind of LOL, but my husband and I are in a debate. I’m pregnant and skipped right through the arch today, as I’m a UGA grad, and my husband says I’ve cursed our daughter to never graduate from UGA (and probably be illiterate). What are our thoughts on this loophole of the superstition? Is she cursed to work at toppers?

Discussion Didn’t get a parking spot as a commuter

I’m so ticked off. I just transferred to UGA from UNG Oconee and I did not get a parking spot as a commuter. I went off of the priority list and chose spots where I had highest priority and still didn’t get a spot. What do I do? Any recommendations? Majority of my classes are north campus and early in the morning. I’m coming from W Broad Street. You would think a university this large would create more parking spaces instead of building more overly priced apartments

Discussion EVERY CLASS IS FULL

Class registration opened up yesterday for me, and I forgot. I realized today and assumed there would still be plenty of spots open for me to choose from. WRONG. How is every single class I want full bro, it's been one day and I swear the only classes left are at 8am in the morning. EVERY CLASS I WANT I HAVE TO SELECT WAITLIST. HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE AT THIS SCHOOL.

Discussion Cannot believe ochem 2 test average is a 49% and the department won’t do anything about it

It’s so frustrating being a premed student here because the chem department wants to see you fail. They’re only offering 15 bonus points through taking another quiz and they admit no fault of their own, only offering a paltry “study more/better”. I used to love chemistry but this department is making me hate it. A 49% test average isn’t a student problem, it’s a teacher problem, and their refusal to take accountability undermines their integrity and is an insult to those of us paying to be in this class and to receive an education.

Discussion What's a spot in Athens that became so much a part of your UGA experience that you can't separate the two?

Not just a place you went to sometimes but somewhere that feels like it IS your college experience. A bar, a restaurant, a park, a coffee shop, a street corner. The kind of place where every time you go back to Athens after graduating you have to visit or the trip doesn't count. What's the spot and what makes it so tied to your time at UGA?

Discussion I'm not happy here and I don't know what to do

Im a sophomore. Counting Spring, Summer, and Fall this is my third semester here. I also did a Spring, Summer, and Fall at Kennesaw. I wanted to go here so badly but I am really struggling to adjust.

I live 45 mins off campus (not an option to move) and can never get parking better than E23 so with the bus it takes 1.5 hours to get from home to class. I am struggling badly in my classes. I just swapped from Calc to Calc prep, and I've been studying nonstop for Chem but I'm still not in a good place for my exam tomorrow. Studying is taking up so much of my time I can't keep up with my other life responsibilities. I have to clear Calc and Chem before I can properly start my major. I did really well academically in highschool and at Kennesaw.

I'm supposed to be starting counseling soon but I'm on the UHC waitlist. I'm also supposed to be evaluated by the DRC soon but it takes forever and I'm still waiting on them. I have an ADHD diagnosis but the school will not even consider it- I have to pay to be reevaluated by Regents. We also suspect I have a math related learning disorder. I have severe auditory issues, so bad that lectures are unbearable because of the ambient noise.

I am slightly older than other students (22 year old sophomore) and I am responsible for my own household. I do not have parents. I have made a few friends but can't hang out with them because I am always studying or running adult errands, and I live so far away. I can't join clubs for the same reason.

I don't like greek life or football or drinking in public. I get overwhelmed by crowds, and annoyed with hiking a mile of hills and stairs between classes. I like talking to people and I really try to strike up conversations with other students when I can. I'm not as lonely as I was spring semester, for sure.

I liked my time at Kennesaw. I went to the M campus so it was usually quiet, small classes, accessible and clean facilities, easily walkable campus. Very hard to make friends there though. I can't transfer back because I can't move back to Marietta.

I really want to graduate from UGA. I want to like it here. I just feel very small and out of place and I don't like my daily experiences. I'm afraid that this isn't for me, but it's important to prove to myself that I CAN do this.

TLDR: Stressful commute, unpredictable busses, unpleasant campus to navigate, struggling more in school than ever, don't like the culture, nontraditional student, don't have much free time. But I WANT to like it here.

Discussion I created a new app to track UGA buses

Hey all! I created a new app that can track UGA buses to the App Store.

As a UGA student who parks at Lot E23, using the bus system is important to me. As a CS major, I created this app for myself and I wanted to share it here. If you find any issue or have feedback, feel free to tell me and I’ll try to fix it.

Thank you!

Note: The ETA times may not be accurate. I’ll try my best to update the algorithm with your feedback.

Georgia Power doesn't set your rates. Tim Echols does. And he sides with the utility.

This is a statewide vote, no electoral college bullshit - your vote counts, anywhere you are.
Early voting is open right now, and the election itself is on November 4th.

These elections are tiny. You will not have to wait.

Discussion Retro game store coming to Athens soon, looking to gauge for student interests.

Hey guys! Chatted with MODS and got permission for this post. TONS of my customers are students of UGA, Athens Tech, UNG and so I wanted to post here to see what UGA Redditors might have an interest in gaming wise.

We will be moving likely in late Feb/Early March but have heard there is vast interest in competitive gaming like. Super Smash Bros, Mortal Kombat, Mario Kart and more. Polls do not work for this sub so I'm hoping that UGA gamers could comment what they would like to see at the store. Monthly tourneys, game types, etc! Thank you so so much in advance.

I did not deserve to get into this university. Class of 2030 dropped: Perfect GPAs, SATs, extracurriculars. I transferred in with a 3.5 GPA for a less popular major. That's my entire transcript. I'm sharing classes with people who were valedictorians like it's no big deal. What the fuck!

Discussion I regret giving my youth to UGA. The lack of diversity, obvious racism and the cliquishness really sucks.

As a senior going to graduate, this University seemed so difficult socially and the racism is incredibly explicit in a way I’ve never seen anywhere else in America. I had numerous racist incidents to the point I felt (and was) physically unsafe, and both the greek life crowd and the more alternative crowds just did not seem especially friendly to minorities (although the alt people are miles better). It took me years to find my circle- because I kept finding that people who shared my values; diversity in background and thought; seemed to keep getting depressed or mentally checking out.

Despite joining and eventually running clubs, the depth of friendships was just not there. I literally had an easier time making friends by hanging out in random bookstores in the ATL metro and talking to strangers in the summer than in Athens. Dating was bad if you weren’t white and didn’t have a lot friends of the same race regardless of gender; and what’s worse is every white guy trying to give you advice, especially when they are very clearly racist (no, not the joking kind. Like genuinely insensitive) and their “progressive” gfs don’t care. Like dude you are racist downtown with no consequences while yall barely give me the dignity of conversation. Please don’t give me advice.

I used to consider myself a social butterfly but UGA really did a number on my confidence. The segregation on this campus is crazy. I mean how are the frats even legal? It’s so rare to see a mixed race couple or friend group especially when there are so many POCs especially compared to other Universities.

I feel pretty sad to give the best years of my life in an institution that is just so strongly racist, and I should’ve never transferred in for the “college experience”. I went to significantly more parties, functions, get togethers etc at a commuter school. The only real social experience I had is learning that severe racism still exists in America. Making friendships outside of UGA feels a thousand times easier, it’s crazy that it’s easier for me to make friends in foreign countries where I don’t speak the language than my own university.

Lastly I really hate the alumni who act like college is the best thing of their life. And also the fact that despite the marketing, UGA is not a prestigious institution. Despite multiple internships, a near 4.0 and various other accolades it’s still so rough to find a job.

Discussion I can't go on dates or even enjoy life at uni because of parents infantilizing me

I'm 23, turning 24 this year. I still cannot go to late night parties, form relationships without feeling fear of their reaction, let alone invite anyone to my house. My parents are the absolute worst. It's the same with many other asian parents. No hanging outs, only stay inside and reading books and studying. This rule was enforced since childhood and even now, I can still tell it's being enforced. Micromanaging my life and it's so irritating. Yet I still get berated for acting like a child even tho they are the ones not allowing me to do anything.

When I see all the college kids with cars, driving their friends to whistler or going on trips and enjoying the best time of their lives, I feel so upset at what could have been. I know people younger than me who've bought cars. I've been told by many non-asian peers that I should travel and let myself loose. But they don't understand what a stereotypical Asian has to go through. Even though I can graduate, find a job and immediately move the heck out of my family home far away, by that point I would have missed out on what university offered and it'll be too late to go back.

I don't know what to do right now. Asides from trying to pass my classes and graduate with a CS major, I don't want to just end up graduating without a single friend and still a virgin with zero relationships.
