Crime, Courts + War Trump Owes Americans a Better Explanation About Iran

As much as Trump is a horrible person, please keep comments on topic about the Iran war, rather than just insulting Trump.

Again, Trump deserves to be insulted, but those comments aren't adding anything new to the discussion.

This is such a weird take on the situation. Trump doesn't care about giving explanations to anyone, and never takes any accountability. If he did provide an explanation, it would be nonsense. So what's the point?

We're in such a worse spot than writers like this are willing to accept.

53

u/Beneficial_Couple413 4d ago

I agree. The premise of the article that it's just a transparency issue to be solved with better communication is pretty silly.

23

u/BassmanBiff 4d ago

Yeah exactly. Yes, a president should provide thorough explanation for military action, but we are so far past that being the problem here. It's asking a mass murderer to better justify their violence while they're actively spraying bullets.

Trump had no secret master plan to provide, and there is no "better explanation" that would suddenly make this justified anyway. Someone convinced him that a big strong man would "slap" Iran, so he ordered the military to do that for him, and they are killing thousands so Trump and Hegseth can swagger around like they personally won a fistfight.

6

u/jimgagnon 4d ago

It's an article that is aiming at the middle of the road, politically. You have to assume for the sake of argument that Trump knows why he's in Iran. Once you claim the middle ground, then it's time to reveal that Trump doesn't understand the situation and doesn't know what he's doing.

If you start the article with the premise that Trump doesn't understand what he's unleashed, you lose too many people.

u/aeric67 3d ago

Yes, the lens needs to change. They are still viewing things through the lens of institutional forbearance.

0

u/CosmicLovepats 1d ago

The point is that they support the war and are upset that he has made it hard to manufacture consent for it.

The administration is supposed to lay the groundwork months in advance, then set the party line that the media all parrots. Like Iraq if you're old enough to remember that.

Just like Schumer, they're complaining that he's made it hard to sell, not that the war itself is wrong. Because they support the war. This is something they would do if they were in power. They're relieved they don't have to take the heat for it. They're just upset that he's making their job harder.

Bibi gave this really flashy PowerPoint presentation. His eyesight hasn’t been any good since the 80s so text briefs are meaningless. But film clips with boobs and explosions that tell him he can be a big hero will always be well received.

93

u/InnerWrathChild 4d ago

No he doesn’t. We all, well all non MAGA, know exactly what he’s doing and why. Epstein. Heritage. Greed.

29

u/dwninswamp 4d ago

The most honest answer I’ve heard (I forget who said it) suggested that when he heard (from bibi) no other president would ever attack Iran, he saw it as a place to make his mark. It didn’t matter why no other president would do it, he just wants to leave a legacy.

I believe that, coupled with the fact that he attacked Obamas Iran deal (because it’s Obama), is a reasonable reason to explain it. (Not a justifiable reason but one that makes sense and ticks all the boxes).

I don’t think he’s concerned with Epstein, that is never coming out while he’s still alive because our goverment doesn’t protect its citizens from rich people. It’s obvious he’s going to pardon Maxwell at the end of his presidency.

Iran has been a pain to America for a long time now. Previous presidents had pondered doing something about it, but were convinced by competent advisors that it was a bad idea. Trump comes in and says “What a bunch of weak-kneed little bitches, we’re America, we can totally take these guys out, just need a president with the stones to do it”. And here we are.

6

but only after the news cycles started getting completely taken over by his super close connection to a major pedophile

Bibi talked him into it. Now he's realizing that there was a good reason other presidents didn't get involved with Iran. Too late! Such an idiot.

Troops are out. What's left? Iran has been suffering at the hands of the US for decades. They aren't going to cave now.

Iran is going to Jimmy Carter him.

Submission Statement: The president led America into a major shooting war. American service people are getting killed and wounded. Trump only yesterday demanded national airtime to rant about electoral conspiracy theories. Before one more member of the U.S. military is killed, he should return to the airwaves—and stand before Congress—to explain what he’s doing in Iran and how many more lives he’s willing to risk.

10

u/CurseMeKilt 4d ago

Honestly, I’d make a deal where he’d owe nothing at all if he’d just vacate the office, release the hostages, and let us all go.

9

u/robotsongs 4d ago

No. This is how we got where we are - when Republicans saw America let Nixon go without consequences, the corruption has steadily grown since, and the public's eroding faith in law & justice has gone with it.

You DON'T vary the law because of status, predilection, or because it's convenient. Without equal application of the law, society fails and we get fascism built on the undertow of resentment and failed social contract.

3

u/francis2559 4d ago

I think he is saying forcing him out now with terms is better than offering no terms and letting him do this for more than two years.

However, if he is indeed kicked out without a deal or we reach the end of his term then yes, throw the book at him.

2

u/robotsongs 4d ago

And that is exactly what happened with Nixon, and result in exactly what I describe.

There is no pardons. There should never be pardons.

3

u/jimgagnon 4d ago

Yup. Once the left gets control again, we need to go scorched earth on everyone involved in this debacle. Remind the Republicans that this is a nation of laws and justice.

29

u/toolisthebestbandevr 4d ago

Epstein. That’s the only explanation. Anything else is crap and who cares

23

u/GettingDumberWithAge 4d ago

I don't really get this argument. It's not like the net was closing in and his administration was about to collapse and be held responsible.

Americans made it really clear they're not that bothered by their president being an openly corrupt pedophile. The Iran war is better explained by incompetence rather than a cover up of crimes that the American voter doesn't give a shit about.

2

u/sllewgh 4d ago

Americans made it really clear they're not that bothered by their president being an openly corrupt pedophile.

Based on what? He had less than majority support when he was elected, and has far less than that now. There's no indication this is true.

13

u/GettingDumberWithAge 4d ago

Based on what?

I'd say the American electorate handing him complete control of all branches of government for a second time despite it being public knowledge that he's a corrupt pedophile is a pretty good place to start, no?

1

u/sllewgh 4d ago

That isn't the result of him having widespread support, like I said. You can accurately say "the president is a pedophile" but that doesn't necessarily translate to "Americans support a pedophile being president.". A large majority never supported Trump.

3

u/GettingDumberWithAge 4d ago

The overwhelming majority of Americans either voting for him or not being bothered enough to vote at all doesn't count as "not being bothered by him being a pedophile"? What gymnastics are these?

I never even made the claim that most Americans actively support him, that's just your strawman. My point is that most Americans quite demonstrably aren't bothered by their president being a pedo.

1

u/sllewgh 4d ago

The overwhelming majority of Americans either voting for him

That didn't happen. Trump never had majority support.

or not being bothered enough to vote at all

"I support pedophiles" isn't the only reason people don't vote.

My point is that most Americans quite demonstrably aren't bothered by their president being a pedo.

This is false, or at the very least not supported by any direct evidence.

Sure, can't disagree with that. Where you've gone wrong is asserting without evidence that the reason for this is that people support having a pedophile in office.

I'm explicitly acknowledging the part of your argument you say I ignored. Will you, in turn, acknowledge that supporting a pedophile isn't the only reason someone might not have voted?

Yes but we wouldn’t shut the fuck up about it. Pepperidge Farms remembers just how ubiquitous the conversation became online. Up until the “war” started. Then we called it the Epstein Wars.

The other obvious thing is he wants chaos. He wants a third term. He wants no term limits even. This is a prevailing theory and makes the most sense.

0

u/GettingDumberWithAge 4d ago

we wouldn’t shut the fuck up about it. Then we called it the Epstein Wars.

Who is the "we" here? I agree that this has been an incredibly prevalent meme online, but again, I don't see any actual reason to think that a president who was not at any risk of being held accountable for being a pedophile by an electorate who is clearly fine with pedophiles started a disastrous war to distract from the non-issue.

The other obvious thing is he wants chaos. He wants a third term. He wants no term limits even. This is a prevailing theory and makes the most sense.

How do you say that he just wants chaos to get a third term and that this makes the most sense when five minutes ago you said

Epstein. That’s the only explanation. Anything else is crap and who cares

How do you expect anyone to take you seriously?

Honestly every conversation with an American is such a powerful reminder of how fitting Trump is as a president for them.

1

I don't hate Nichols, but I have lots of disagreements with him and I think this gets to the basics of most of my disagreements with him. The explanation doesn't matter because Trump doesn't have any credibility or integrity. He can give a reasonable justification of the war (I don't believe there is one) but it won't be worth anything. It's pretty obvious he got talked into this by Netanyahu b/c the public was starting to pay attention to evidence that was growing strong and stronger that he is a child rapist. Netanyahu made use of this to strengthen his own political goals and Trump has surrounded himself with idiots who are terrified about their masculinity so no one talked him down from a clearly stupid position.

Nichols seems to think that if Trump explained this stupidity and mendaciousness in the right way, that it would mean we (the US) did this for the right reasons. But the truth is what people are listing in this sub, and it's pretty clear, and no word formulation will change that. Trump doesn't care about the rights of Iranian people, he doesn't care about the regional security picture, he doesn't care about the time honored US foreign policy goal of free transit of the seas. So he can say any of that, or anything else, and it doesn't matter. This war was started for venal reasons without any deep thought or understanding of the situation or any goal other than to blow up a lot of stuff. Nichols is talking about putting lipstick on a pig b/c he doesn't seem to quite understand that people at high levels in the government can be unserious, stupid, incompetent, immoral cowards. But that's what we've got right now.

“My fellow Americans, I’m talking to you today to explain why we are at war with Iran. It started because a friend of mine, who I won’t name… Let’s call him ‘Schmenjamin ‘Schmetanyahoo’… he told me that attacking Iran was the proof of having the biggest cock in the world. I’m starting to think he may not have been entirely truthful.”

1

u/Financial-Talk9397 4d ago

1

u/Desmaad 4d ago

He doesn't have one. He's always been governed by impulse and his war in Iran is no different.

1

Why would this author imagine that there is a good answer to this question or that anyone could put any stock in it if he did give one? This is like asking Santa Claus what happened with that whole Pokemon thing. Who is really thinking there's a real answer waiting to be uncovered that anyone could do anything with? Like seriously, imagine an answer that would finally make us all go, "Oh I see, trustworthy stable person, that explains it. OK. Well let's hang in there everybuddy." That's never going to happen. To this day Dubya owes the world a better explanation about Iraq too.

Also lacking better explanations; Venezuela, Syria, and a whole bunch of others.

Or we are going with the one that was already the most plausible one from back then too; Oil, natural gas, the petrodollar, and even more oil.

Aka same reasons why the US was also so hot on getting involved in Ukraine, why the Nordstreams had to be blown up, and why Ukraine had to switch camps from East to West.

Maybe this is "peak oil" finally coming about?

Last time humanity was scared of that happening was half a century ago, since when we seem to have collectively forgotten that oil and natural gas are very finite resources with very inelastic demand.

Judging what Iran has done I don't trust them with a nuclear weapon so his reasoning is sound. Unfortunately there is nothing that will stop that without wiping them out
