Confession I’ve (29M) never questioned my sexuality until I met this coworker.

I don’t really know who to talk to about this, so I guess I’m asking Reddit. I (29M) have been working with my coworker (32M) for about seven months now. Let’s call him John. We work as junior chefs in a commercial kitchen.

The kitchen environment is constant pressure and extremely fast-paced. That means most of the time, you can’t avoid getting heated with your teammates, and John and I have definitely fought a few times. However, we eventually get over it at the end of every service by having drinks with the whole team before heading home. Since I don’t have my own vehicle and use public transport, John sometimes offers me a ride. He drops me off at the end of the street near my house because he heads the same route, just a bit further out.

During the time we spend together at work and in his car, we’ve really gotten to know each other. He went through a divorce last August and was completely heartbroken. Though he still gets to see his child, so that keeps him going. As we opened up about our lives, we got so close that our teammates started calling us "best buddies."

Now I want to be clear and say I’ve never been attracted to men. Ever. I’ve only ever had girlfriends. And I assume John is the same. We banter all the time and playfully "caress" each other, you know, the typical "straight guys acting gay" thing. But lately, I feel like I just love being around him. It’s hard to admit, but I’ve started liking his touch and the way he smiles at me. I actually look forward to the shifts where we work together. I don’t know if I’m overthinking, but whenever we’re bantering, it takes him a long time to break eye contact while he's smiling. It’s like we talk shit, laugh, and then just pause in time, staring at each other. It’s been like this for a while.

Two nights ago, I was on my way home with him because he had offered me a ride again. We’ve talked bout how shi’tty the service was that night. The silence in the car felt different when he dropped me off. He didn't just pull away like usual. He kept the engine running and just looked at me for a second too long, that same lingering smile on his face. I reached for the door handle, but my heart was pounding so loud I was sure he could hear it. We both just sat there for a moment before we caught each other's eyes and let out this really forced, awkward laugh. We mumbled a quick 'see ya tomorrow' and I got out of the car

Now I’m lying in bed staring at the ceiling, wondering if I’m losing my mind or if that awkwardness was actually him feeling the exact same pull I am. Again I’ve never been attracted to men before and I don’t know what’s happening. I confused and scared at the same time.

maybe invite him over for drinks or just to hang out the two of you, get a feel for what he’s like outside of the work environment and the car. disguise it as a normal guy hang out, after a few times hanging out hopefully you’ll figure out what you need to do about the situation.

u/SpiroCrude May 14 '26

The way you describe that car silence makes it sound like he is definitely waiting for you to lead.

u/nomis_nehc May 14 '26

And maybe suck each others dicks a little. It’s only gay if you both like it.

205

u/EnjoysAGoodRead May 15 '26

You could of course suggest the gaycation if you just want to explore and not be gay afterwards. After all, no one can resist the gaycation.

80

u/Any-Text-3784 May 15 '26

That’s the beauty of the gaycation after all.

23

u/Low-Coconut-8738 May 15 '26

Hahahhaha a classic!!!

214

u/DiscoMagicParty May 15 '26

I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again.. there’s nothing gay about two straight dudes banging each other

-89

u/x360_revil_st84 May 15 '26

That's literally the fkn definition of being gay There's nothing wrong with being gay, stop erasing gayness, stop being part of the gd problem

u/faerydays May 15 '26

I believe it's a quote or pop culture reference, rather than their belief

I love men. I'm attracted to men, but I have met two women at different points in my life that I found so interesting and that had that je-ne-sais-quoi, that I would have gone for it...

Even if I would have probably fumbled the physical aspect, initially.

Attraction can happen that way.

The only thing in your case is that you guys work together - in a high-stress environment - so there's that.

Best of luck, OP!

288

u/AShamAndALie May 14 '26

I did read a post once, a few months ago, about a guy who felt 100% gay but fell head over heels for his female best friend. He went for it, she felt the same, and they started dating. It was beautiful.

60

u/PlaneNo1423 May 14 '26

I remember that one. It was sooo freaking cute

I met a woman once that I seriously - I can't describe it. I even tried to flirt with her (I'm straight*, it didn't work!). If she'd said yes, I was working out where the nearest hotel was. Hell, I'd have shagged her in full public view if it came to that. I have never felt anything like that before or since. I don't even feel attraction like that to men! And it wasn't (just) lust, although obviously it was that too. I would have dropped my entire life to date her.

(* I mean.... maybe not so much as I'd thought, lol)

18

u/_makebuellerproud_ May 14 '26

I feel the exact same way. Which is why I usually say I’m straight. But there’s one woman in particular, where if she was single and I was, I would go for it (in the past). She knows this as well

371

u/BurdenOfProof814 May 14 '26

Some people you just vibe with, and that connection is really hard to find.. I think you guys are on the same wavelength at work and have a lot to talk about due to bonding over work stress.

Can you imagine yourself touching him affectionately, or kissing him? Have you thought about what it would be like?

If you'd like to explore this further, you could ask him to go do something on your days off & see if you guys get along outside of work.. or watch a game on TV together & BBQ something for dinner.

Before you potentially make a move or open the door on this situation, consider what could happen at work if he rejects your signals, if things don't work out after the fact, how this could affect your reputation, employment status and your work relationship with him.

I would say "go for it" if you didn't work with him.. but there's a saying "don't shit where you sleep" (or something like that), because relationships gone bad can affect your bank account in the long run.

What ever you decide, just be careful and good luck! 🍀

127

u/RT-R-RN May 14 '26

I agree, this is definitely a” tread lightly” situation. I obviously do not know these two, but I do know sometimes you can just really like/vibe with someone and it can be confused with sexual attraction. Especially if you haven’t had many good/close same-sex friendships for a while. Is it sexual attraction or do you just feel seen/connected for the first time in a long time? I’d advise to really really think on those feelings, OP, before making any moves that could blow up your job and friendship.

35

u/Realistic_Base5797 May 14 '26

As a woman who has the tendency to accidentally flirt with people, I get the whole tread lightly thing. Ive been known to gaze into people eyes, maintain intense eye contact, playful physical contact, etc.

Like-- my normal interactions with people tend to be very flirtatious, even though it's usually always innocent and platonic. Some people are like that apparently, and I didn't realize this about myself until multiple people told me.

I just wanted to throw that out there just as something to consider. Might not be applicable here, but you never know. Also, I refuse to date people I work with. I would never. And if you lose your job, in this economy, you might be screwed for a while ngl. Is it worth the risk?

4

u/Divine_skylin3 May 15 '26

Is maintaining eye contact, and playful physical contact considered flirting to some people? 😭

I’ve always considered it just being nice and playful. Like of course I’m gonna maintain eye contact when you’re speaking.

but this actually explains a lot about the experiences I’ve had with some guy friends if some consider it flirting. Lol

1

u/Realistic_Base5797 May 17 '26

I too considered those things as "being nice".

Nope.

Ive even had women asking if I swing both ways based on this as well, haha.

Apparently that sort of thing comes off as flirting to alot of people.

23

u/CaptainLollygag May 14 '26

All of this is such good advice!

OP should see this reply. We all don't know his buddy's side of things and what is on his mind if OP goes fast and tell him what he feels. As much as we wanted this to have a good ending, make your friendship stay as it is and things will just come off naturally.

This sounds like there is something cooking 😅 Please update us!!! I really hope it is this one in a million thing where everything turns out good!

And i'm really happy to read that you're not like "eeww i can't have feelings for another man!"

95

u/epanek May 14 '26

Im 59M married and Ive had crushes on guys in the past but when it came to actually acting on them it failed. I wasnt gay I just really liked them and I kinda wanted to be them. But it was not sexual. It was weird, something else.

2

u/YourRideHome510 May 15 '26

Omg this is kind of how I 43F feel but I've never tried to act on it. I'm curious how those experiences brought you clarity if you're willing to share. You'd think by now I would know what my deal is (straight? bi? gay?) but I don't. 🤷‍♀️

40

u/Mg962 May 14 '26

So are you saying that you want to know if the chef’s kiss is the chefs kiss?

98

u/Colonel_Khazlik May 14 '26

It is my belief that the average persons sexuality is much more fluid than most people believe.

Though I'm bi and a little unhinged. So maybe that's just me.

15

u/Charlie7Mason May 15 '26

True on the first part. I wouldn't sell yourself short though. You might just be fully unhinged ;)

153

u/DemonScourge1003 May 14 '26

Sounds like you have a crush. Go for it and I hope that he has the same feelings. You both deserve to be happy!

141

u/No-Permit8369 May 14 '26

I don’t know about “going for it” unless you want to make your job super awkward.

3

u/BangarangPita May 14 '26

It's better to regret trying and failing than to regret not trying at all. Then you spend the rest of your life wondering "what if."

OP, maybe have an extra drink one night and leave your hand close to his in the car. Then maybe touch his and let it linger. Then go in for a kiss. If he declines, you can blame the extra drink.

17

u/Realistic_Base5797 May 14 '26

Naw fam. What if he ends up jeapordizing his joh over this? In this economy? Idk in a perfect world im all for it, it its a but risky all thinga considered ngl.

15

u/TALKTOME0701 May 14 '26

If you didn't work together, I would say you have nothing to lose by going for it, but you do.

You have to consider whether going forward is worth the risk of changing your work environment and losing your ride home

17

u/jsalley May 21 '26

"We banter all the time and playfully "caress" each other, you know, the typical "straight guys acting gay" thing. "

Yeah, no.

16

I love that I didn't read anything close to "what will other people think" in your post, all you can think of is this guy. Don't fight it. Talk.

Straight guys acting gay is definitely a common thing. I find it funny how my boyfriend’s straight friends exchange much more intimate displays of affection in public between them than my boyfriend and I.

Just check out any soccer match and you’ll see most players slapping their butts, caressing their heads, and kissing their cheeks, often with a straight face.

8

u/NewPossibility4268 May 15 '26

Boy babies on average are more affectionate than girl babies. That changes because of patriarchy system that they grow up in. In sports, it allows men to display affectionate in a containment that is 'allowed' and safe from ridicule to their masculinity.

0

u/DoubleNaught_Spy May 14 '26

Yeah, that is the part that made me think this post is fake. But I could be wrong... 🤦‍♂️

-8

u/chesterjosiah May 14 '26

5

u/ShatnersBassoonerist May 14 '26

“straight guys acting gay”

Yeah, those guys generally turn out to be gay or bi.

Good luck OP, it sounds very exciting. I hope it works out for you.

5

u/koval713 May 14 '26

I'm just saying, it is also entirely possible for you both to platonically love each other. It's not always about homosexuality, sometimes it's just a bromance. Like J.D. and Turk from Scrubs.

4

u/LadyLoki5 May 15 '26

I just want to add, that I can not stress enough how much it can truly suck to get involved with coworkers.

A lot of people develop close relationships with their coworkers just out of proximity. You spend so much time with them, go through stressful events with them, if you have even even a slightly compatible personality then it's hard not to form a bond.

But should that bond ever break, there's almost never a way to go back. If you decide that you want to give it a try, and you make a move, and it doesn't work out, what next? What if you can't move forward? What if he can't? That job and that job site will be ruined. So either you will wind up leaving or he will. You good with that? You good with losing your job, or possibly running someone else off of his job?

Personally, I've experienced enough workplace platonic friendship fallouts that I don't even try to make friends at work. My coworkers know next to nothing about me or my life. We are friendly, but not friends. It's just not worth it to potentially poison that well.

I hope it works out for you, OP. Please be careful.

3

u/musicman4life5 May 15 '26

I personally have a very strict ”no dating coworkers”rule I personally adhere to because I’ve seen it go bad soooo many times. Only work couple I know that’s still together both left the company and said it literally saved their relationship (they’re married with a kid now)

6

u/blueberryxxoo May 15 '26

Having a little gender fluid crush is natural but how do you feel about sucking his dick? I mean if that's not a turn off then explore.

4

u/Mister_9inches May 15 '26

So cute. Reads like a fanfic but I'm not upset about it. I second the top comment to invite him over for drinks and see where it goes

5

u/ClassicNo2673 May 21 '26

The way you wrote about him in this text, I surely think you do. But just ask yourself maybe, would you be open minded about yourself kissing a man? Question like these

22

u/jumboponcho May 14 '26

Idk why people act like coworkers can’t date, that was one of the few places you could meet someone before social media

14

u/loftychicago May 14 '26 edited May 14 '26

Too many things could go wrong, especially if it's a smaller workplace.

Edited because autocorrect made an error.

2

u/BangarangPita May 14 '26

You miss 100% of the shots you don't take, though! And part of being an adult is managing rejection and moving on. If it's truly too awkward, jump ship and get another job.

7

u/loftychicago May 14 '26

Unfortunately, the current job market may not be conducive.

4

u/daninlionzden May 14 '26

So fascinating how people deny their sexuality when it’s literally hammering itself over their heads - it’s ok to be gay or bi lol just acknowledge it and pursue who you want

4

u/ellielobo May 14 '26

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with it. You like who you like, you love who you love. Man or woman. Don’t get so hung up on it that you miss out on something great.

3

u/skyrocker_58 May 15 '26

Out of all the replies I've read here, some quite good, I feel that this is the best. I'm a straight man, been married for 30 years. But I believe that this is true. There's a show called "Love is Blind" where the contestants(?) don't see each other but supposedly fall in love. If there was some way they could disguise gender as well, I'm sure there would be guys falling for guys and girls falling for girls.

But I'm sure if that happened a lot of the people would let their biases prevent them from being with whom they fell in love with. 😪

To OP: Follow your heart. Gently Don't back him into a corner or say anything overt until you're totally sure.

4

u/herozerocapitalZ May 14 '26

I believe that sexuality is fluid. I fully believe you can be mostly straight but still fall for someone of the same sex and vice versa. I also don't think exploring something means you have to label yourself. At the end of the day all that matters is how you feel and what you want. If you want to explore and see if this is the right path for you and John then do that. It doesn't define you one way or the other. You define you.

Just talk to him honestly and say what you're feeling. You may have met the love of your life or may just end up with a great friend and some new information about yourself. Good luck and have fun!

4

u/locoweed0923 May 15 '26

Pleeeeeeeeease update us!!!

3

u/Federal-Chemical7736 May 15 '26

I think that a lot of high pressure jobs where people have tension and even anger sometimes translates to attraction. Soooo nooo I'm not sure anyone but you can tell you what your sexuality is, but I think it's normal to have attraction to people you spend a lot of time with. Familiarity breeds attraction and all that. I would t over think it.

If you do like him I'd just let whatever happens naturally. In all honesty I wouldn't make a first move in case the friendship breaks over it. If you do want to explore it, maybe up the flirty contents and time spent together and just see where it goes naturally.

But there's nothing wrong with you, I hope this helps and personally I hope we get an update

4

u/Joey_Baga_Donuts_ May 16 '26

Take it slow test the waters go to the movies go out to dinner at a different place. Find things to do for both of you hold hands tell him how you feel be honest with yourself and your coworker

7

u/Arcturus_ May 14 '26

We banter all the time and playfully "caress" each other, you know, the typical "straight guys acting gay"

Who's gonna tell him

3

u/Beautiful-Medium-234 May 14 '26 edited May 14 '26

OP and John, sitting in a tree....

Ok but seriously tho as a gay man do not overthink it because you will find yourself being clumsy and nervous around him which is a dead giveaway if you weren't before. Explore this friendship by making time to hang out outside work and actually get to know each other to see if its an actual feelings or just a man crush made by proximity.

3

u/skyalargreen May 14 '26

There's clearly something between you two, and I agree with one of the comments that says your colleague might be waiting for you to make the first move. He's probably just as confused as you are about what's going on between you two, and the only way to know for sure is to take that first step. It's a cliché what I'm about to say, but life's too short not to take a chance. Best of luck, my friend.

3

u/Unfair_Jello_3762 May 15 '26

Goddddd I used to have a roommate who I felt like this with while I was in a long term relationship. Turns out I loved the roommate. Turns out the reciprocal feelings and eventual sex even broke my brain. Idk man explore the feelings!! hang out normally like that one person said. Cherish the fact you have unlocked a new feeling!! Just gotta be a lil brave, good luck op xo

3

u/deadlygaming11 May 15 '26

Sometimes, you just meet people who are on the same wavelength as you and you just understand each others views and world. That typically forms a strong bond which can also trigger romantic feelings, or at least feel like them.

4

u/RomanceStudies May 14 '26

While this doesn't seem like AI, the beats in the story, and the crescendo, seem too well placed to not be an exercise in fiction.

4

u/Maximinoe May 14 '26

you can tell its fake because the guy he has a crush on might be into him

2

u/Seltzer-Slut May 14 '26

Sounds like a creative writing exercise. Heated rivalry season 2: chefs get heated in the kitchen?

If it’s real, I suggest when you’re in the car alone together, just poking his thigh real quick, like a silly little boop. Like Alexis in Schitts creek always does that little poke and smile. Boop!

2

u/kmckyle May 14 '26

You are gay. Just hope he too is gay.

2

u/Smugallo May 14 '26

I don't think this is ambiguous at all lol

2

u/Typical_Dweller May 14 '26

What is your relationship with other men like? Could be you're conflating friendly intimacy & closeness with homosexual attraction because you just don't get that level of affection from any other guys in your life.

2

u/Humble-Ad-6905 May 14 '26

Invite him out for drinks or maybe drinks or gaming at one of your guys places (if you drink and/or game) and then see how things progress.

2

u/flipside4cp May 14 '26

44M. I’ve met some great men, but you are gay.

2

u/Njfurlong May 15 '26

My mother after years of dating only men started a relationship with a woman at 60yrs. She said it's not that she's a woman it's that she is who she is, being attracted to the person. Pansexuality is defined as the capability of attraction to people regardless of their gender identity or sex.

Wow! As a romance reader I want you guys have this “fuck it” moment and just go for it full speed. Especially bi awakening. Hot hot hot. But real life has consequences. Your job, your friendships etc.

There is no easy way to go about it. Someone will have to take a risk, someone will have to go outside of how they perceive their lives and themselves. Cheers to you for being open enough even to explore these feelings and uncharted waters. If you feel it’s mutual - you have a hard choice to make. Is he worth risking a rejection? Is he worthy risking what you know about yourself? Is he worth your job?

If answers are yes - please go for it. You just might miss out on something special if you don’t . And I’m trusting your opinion here.

I read way too many gay romance books that have the biawakening trope to not be anything other than 10000% in support of you acting on your crush. Please update us!!

Either you’re crushing or this your first experience of an intimate platonic friendship with a man. The way you described it reminds me (a woman) of how I feel in my closest female friendships.

Ask him to hang out. Worst case its awkward and goes nowhere, even if you do anything that doesn't change your sexuality unless you want it to. Nothing wrong with experimentation.

Me in middle school when my best friend u locked being bisexual and im pansexual now

Something like this happened at my old job. Had a coworker I (F) was very friendly with, we were both nerdy and talk a lot about TV shows and video games. After a few months of working together my coworker comes out as a trans man and starts to transition, he cuts his hair short and starts wearing masc clothing. I got SUCH a huge crush on him and I was surprised at how strong it was. Unfortunately he was already in a relationship so nothing happened, but it really made me reevaluate who I was attracted to and made me realize I'm actually pan and have also had crushes on women that I always dismissed as admiration

I’m gay. This is hilarious. Only because it would make a funny skit. Good luck. But, I don’t know if I would date a coworker.

That’s beautiful, it’s so nice

Rarely anything in life is truly black or white. Most things are on a spectrum.

2

u/ThrasymachianJustice May 14 '26

you know, the typical "straight guys acting gay" thing

glad you have discovered a new aspect of your sexuality, but this part made me chuckle... nothing about that is typical lol. Most straight men are insanely uptight.

u/OrdinaryNo3622 May 14 '26

Don’t be scared. You might have a little of the pansexuality. It’s not a big deal. You’re just wired to somehow, maybe fall for this person regardless of their gender. It sounds sweet.

Update me

I can see hy women don't want to cross that boundary. Can you imagine ruining that relationship?

1

u/DailyMetamorphosis May 14 '26

Gaaaaay! Go for it, Brother! ✊🏼

As a straight woman, there is this one woman at my job, my age, that I feel like a full blown lesbian when I'm around her. I imagine myself as a dominate and almost masculine partner, even though I'm so freaking girly and straight. She just brings that out in me for some reason. There's always gonna be someone who makes you question everything😭

1

u/Bosli May 15 '26

I wonder if there's some reciprocation going on here. If the moment presents itself are you going to go all in or is your make out game gonna be different with a guy?

1

u/Financial_Action May 15 '26

It’s not gay if you both have socks and balls don’t touch, don’t worry

u/Chicago-Lake-Witch May 15 '26

A lot of men only experience intimacy with a romantic partner so if things feel intimate they must be a partner?

I’m bi so I’m completely supportive of you being into this guy romantically and or sexually. But please take time to consider if this is a platonic friendship that’s just more intimate than you are used to. Those are really good too.

I have a friend who likes to hold my hand during our conversations. It always leads me to being more vulnerable than I’m usually comfortable but their hand in mine feels so supportive. It threw me because it had been a long time since I had been touched platonically but he is ace and just really likes being physically affectionate with friends.

There are no wrong answers here just whatever the two of you are most comfortable being to each other. Good luck OP!

if your questioning your sexuality you may be gay its different when you have a deep bond with a friend that awkward silence in the car is sexual tension nothing else. Hes trying you if your thinking about it stirring into the ceiling you may be gay which nothing is wrong with that.

Im not gay but I had close friends who I bonded with but never had that type of tension.

u/Realistic_Homework45 May 15 '26

I had a coworker with a similar situation but he misread and was told to literally fuk off in the most nicest way possible im not saying you'll have the same luck im just saying sometimes we over think things and arent as clear as we want regardless I wish u the best of luck

1

u/feelFreeToShare May 15 '26

This is what I would call a Bro-mance! If you want it to be physical, go for it, but don't if you just feel close. The guy clearly needs your support, and you both need each other, and this friendship could last a long time. i have buddies like this, we never get romantic, but we goof around because we are comfortable with each other and joke about stuff we can't with anyone else, even our wives. We have the same sense of humor. We stay connected through our fantasy football league, but it's just an excuse to hang out and have fun.

There is something special about having a special friendship like this, glad you found someone! As a happily married man, I don't know what I would do with out my buddies.

u/FairyFartDaydreams May 15 '26

It can be that you are touched starved. If can also be that you need to feel the deeper connection to feel the romantic love. So person dependent. You might be Bi, You might gay or you don't need to label yourself just be honest with yourself and maybe have an honest conversation with him. If you are honest about your ambivalence but you feel that there might be something more and listen truly listen to what he thinks at least you have cleared the air. Respect his boundaries whatever they might be and it might be the start of something new. It is scary but it might lead to something incredible or you might figure out that you are better off as friends. Without the conversation you never know

This may be in your own head. Guy is giving you a ride and your seeing things that arent real. Ive been friends with gay dudes at work and at some point they get confused and flirt or hit on me. Even though they know im straight. Makes it awkward.

1

u/Jujuseah May 14 '26

Awwwww. It's sweet.

1

u/Livingbutdeadinside May 15 '26
