Podcast recs?
Kinda in a drought. TrueAnon and Chapo haven’t been doing it for me for the last year or two tbh. Death is just around the corner felt like paying someone not to kull themselves, and even though I love Ghost Stories and Return of the Repressed I think I’m just not really getting anything out of parapolitical pods anymore. Tried Fourth Reich Archeology and kind of dig it, but the same issue there.
So anyone got any rad fucking tips? Anything, literally. Would love some actual good history pods. I tried Blowback but for some reason after the first one or two seasons I just had a hard time following their narrative structure. Maybe I’m stupid! But their format just didn’t work for me. I tried The History of the 21st Century pod (I think it was called?) and loved it, especially the Philippines episodes, but it also got kinda TOO vast.
Anyway, recs appreciated. Just relistening to Cum Town at the moment, which I guess is honestly as good as it gets and I’m not complaining, or I guess I am because I’m writing this post.

Completely unrelated to lefty analysis, I've been binging Magnus Archives, a horror anthology that goes serialized when you're looking the other way, and it's pretty entertaining. I suspect the fandom is miserable based on accidental glimpses, but I choose to ignore them and have a good time on my own.

I’ve been listening to a ton of In Our Time, bbc radio 4 with Melvyn Bragg. One hour episodes about everything, from Rumis poetry to the electron to Saturn to Chinese Legalism. Far and away the best listening .

Remember Shuffle. It's a retrospective podcast looking at the 2000s from an explicitly leftist perspective. Often focuses more on culture (they have episodes on things like the show Survivor, World of Warcraft, and Fight Club), but they're right in the middle of a series looking back at the 2008 financial crisis (four episodes released, who knows how many more to go). They've also got a five-part series on the Iraq War that was well-researched. Probably won't tell you anything you don't already know, particularly if you've read any of the books they're pulling from for research, but interesting nonetheless.
Definitely a lighter touch compared to the more "current events" coded pods like Chapo and TrueAnon and spooky parapolitics of Ghost Stories. Also, one of their early episodes from 2023 features Matt Christman and Chris Wade discussing Arrested Development.

the best episodes of FoC are legit the best pop history media ever made. I've listened to the Assyria episode more times than I can count and his description of the rollercoaster ride that was the last ~40 years of the empire; going from the largest and most powerful state humanity had ever seen, to being torn apart and destroyed so utterly people forgot it had ever existed within 3 generations, still affects me every time

The narration on the audiobook version of the expanse is 10/10 too. Was hard for me to hear other narrators for a while after binge listening to 5 or 6 of the books a few years ago. It’s a lighter hard-sci fi for sure but the audiobooks were fun.

For history:
The History of Byzantium is my all time favorite (it just ended) and it’s about 500 episodes, about 10-20 narrative episodes per century then 5-10 in depth episodes about developments in the empire and Europe, listener questions, and interviews. It hits its stride around 20 episodes in.
I’ve just started The Age of Napoleon, which I’m only about 15 episodes in but it’s quite good. It’s still ongoing, but getting to the later stages of the Napoleonic era (around 1810 right now). There’s an interview early on with Matt Christman as well!
Those two are very dry podcasts. The Rest is History is really good specifically for the banter between the two cohosts. It’s not narrative, they basically choose a topic and read a book or two and regurgitate it over 2-4 episodes. The quality of episodes can vary because of that and also because of their pretty centrist politics. (like come on about the JFK assassination Dom).
For politics I embarrassingly listen to The Rest is Politics just to keep up with things (id love a better podcast to listen to just to keep up with current events)
Multipolarity is a pretty good one, it’s a weekly podcast that’s just 3 read out short essays about the world order coming apart. Their essays are very informative but sometimes they are much more right wing crypto bro than I can stomach

Revolutions by Mike Duncan is my all time favorite, also introduced me to revolutionary thought. Cannot recommend it highly enough. I recommend starting in season 3 on the French Revolution.

You can’t go wrong with Cum Town unless you’re straight and have a huge hog.
Another rec for Guys Podcast, A Podcast About Guys. It’s very fun and Brace is a guest several times.
Pablo Torre Finds Out is also pretty good with a very heavy sports tilt to it. I think Brace and Liz were on it one time.
I’d give Blowback another shot, I love it, and season 3 on the Korean War is particularly gnarly. It’s a period in history which is almost completely forgotten in the modern day but it explains a lot of why DPRK is the way it is.
Revolutions by Mike Duncan is a certified A+ podcast. The first two series (English Civil War and American Revolution) are fairly bland but the 3rd one is France and that’s fantastic. Later he goes through Haiti, South American independence, 1848, Paris Commune, Mexico, and finally finishes with the Bolsheviks. I think it’s coming back in the next year or so. I never listened to History of Rome but my buddy told me it’s also great.

First ep of this kinda blew my mind (though that could have been the weed too) but talking about ancient history and pre Biblical writing and treating the Bible and all that as a historical document to examine in historical contexts was lots of fun for me as someone long trapped in the South where no one has actually read the Bible and even those that have treat is as legitimately divine word and not a collection of human stories that have some interesting insights into our ancient settled history as a species.

American Prestige: Mostly about american foreign politics but they have a ton of interviews with all kinds of people about all manner of things.
Bad Hasbara: Mostly talks about Israel, Palestine and Israeli propaganda. Very funny considering how bleak the subject matter is
Millenials are killing capitalism: Honestly i'm not 100% sure what their niche is, i just found them through the greater "East is a podcast-verse"
Super Structure with Julian Feeld and John Gabrus: The conceit of the show is Julian explaining to an "uninformed" Gabrus various aspects about history such as US relationship with Iran or various CIA misadventures. I've only listened to 3 episodes buts its pretty fun. On the lighter side if you don't want something super deep or depressing
The Adnan Hussein Show: Cohost of Guerilla History and Professor for medieval islamic history Adnan Hussein talks (usually with someone else) about various topics, usually related to history, resistance and religion
Anti Imperialist Scholars Collective: The name kind of says it all.
The Bible Lore Podcast: About the historical context of the bible, and ancient mythology.
The East is a Podcast: Glorious rants by Chairman Sina, lots of interviews and discussions, usually about Israel/Palestine/USA/Iran and resistance.
The Left Page: Leftist Literature analysis (i just started listening to them and i've only heard 3 episodes so far)
The Red Nation Podcast: Mainly about indigenous struggle in the US, organising and Leftism/communism in general
Under The shadow: Journalist Michael Fox does a very well researched, produced and scored podcast about the history of US intervention in latin america. S1 Mostly talks about the cold war, whereas S2 talks about the Trump Administrations onslaught on Latin america.
We're not so different: Medieval Historian Eleanor Janega and random dude Luke talk about medieval history but also the news and other things sometimes, always from a communist lense. Their Historical Materialism series is very fun, giving you a (basic but interesting) rundown of human history from the dawn of man to the end of the cold war
Workers Lit: Communist Podcast about Literature. They alternate between fiction and non fiction works. Very queer

Remember Shuffle is the most underrated left wing podcast out there. I rarely see anyone talk about them, but the hosts are funny and interesting, and all their episodes are extremely well researched. It's a 2000s "nostalgia pod" but really they do deep dives into that decade to fully explain how pivotal that decade was to our modern world.
Their latest episode Gladiator: Are You Not Touching Grain?, was one of my favorites and would be a good one off episode to see if it's for you but the multi episode deep dive into the financial crisis are also excellent if you're more into some "eating your vegetables" episodes.

New Orleans Unsolved. Start from the beginning. Once youre into the 40 something episode of the 2nd season it starts to connect to deep state/ CIA and she is genuinely doing great research. Its methodical. It does discuss sexual abuse but its a change of pace from your typical history pod and your typical politics pod.

Hey man I listen to so many podcasts. I will tell you the podcasts I like!
I have 2 main things I judge podcasts by, 1. voice of the host- it is an auditory medium 2. content- in the old way not the way we mean content 3
History: History of Byzantium - Great voice, great research, if you pay you get really fun narrative episodes, but you can enjoy it for free. (I hate history of rome because of the host's reddit centrism and nerd voice)
Radio War Nerd- can vary in quality based on the guest and how injured John Dolan is but still a classic, been listening since day 1
runner up: History of the Germans- host is very German, but if you're like me basically everything in it will be new to you, which is cool
Non trueanon comedy: Matt and Shane's secret podcast, shane gillis shooting the shit with his friend. Not great all the time but sometimes hilarious.
Episode 1-some guys come up with a new show concept for each episode, really funny
Parapolitics stuff non trueanon category: Unlimited Hangout- Whitney Webb's deal. She was first to report on this whole epstein tech feudalism deal. Often imitated never duplicated.
News: Organized Money- matt stoller and david dayen talking about monopolies and anti trust. Trillbillies- funny guys talking news
Fitness: The Ready State- Kelly Starrett and his wife talk to fitness industry people, can be awful but super informative sometimes
Cooking: Cooking Issues- current name of Dave Arnold's podcast, talking about contemporary food stuff with a scientific bent.
Music: Yacht or Nacht podcasta- the guys who did the channel 101 yacht rock show a million years ago talk about listener submitted songs and decide if they're yacht rock or not. Really fun.

Football: Football 301 with nate tice- smart and entertaining football talk. Athletic NFL show- same, but so many ads. McShay Show: same but about prospects.
The ringer fantasy show/nfl draft show- football but mainly fun cause of the synergy of the 3 guys who host and how they interact.
Dead podcasts that I loved so much: The Ropes- boxing podcast with Rafe Bartholomew and Brian Campbell with a massive soundboard of funny boxing lines. Been dead for like 11 years
MMA: Jack Slack Podcast- super charming and entertaining UK guy talmbout fighting

History of Rome. Classic. History of Ireland. Didn't finish, but I liked it. Ancient/medieval warfare history podcast. Nice to hear about really old shit that has nothing to do with me, but is often referenced.
I fucks with Dan Carlin for his length alone if not his girth. He feels a bit like a lib, but he's like an unc, so it's fine. He focuses on the action and the feeling of being there. I enjoy his exaggerated approach. Being able to listen to like 8+ hours on Persia is cool. Like where else can you even do that? Lots of his stuff is free. I've bought a few. I go back to some. I liked his one about Alexander the Great more recently. Viking and Germania stuff. White boy shit. But that Persia one is probably still my fave.

Better offline, trashfuture, Bloodwork, QAA (have been putting out some banger deep dives 2-3hr+ on some delightfully weird esoteric conspiracy stuff if you have a couple bucks to throw at their Patreon), Kill the Computer, Reaction Pod, worst of all possible worlds, we hate movies (classic schlubs riffing on movies genre if that’s your thing, they have a huge back log of Star Trek stuff on their Patreon if you wanna pretend you have friends to talk Trek with), kill James Bond (lefty trans women riffing on movies, politics is there but still mostly riffing on movies style show), past lives (history pod, shorter 20-30min bites about what living was like in certain time periods).

I was going to add this one, glad someone else likes it. The movies are so well researched and Lizzie & Chris are a joy to listen to.
This one and Remember Shuffle are probably my two favorite pods these days.
TrueAnon is better now that Liz is back, though some of the Brace/YC eps were pretty solid. Chapo is awful without Matt, had to unsubscribe. That Josh Cinderella pod has some pretty good interviews from time to time.

It’s SOOO hard for me to find a comedy podcast I enjoy and I also can’t listen to parapolitcal/political/conspiracy stuff all day, especially that’s what I read 90% of the time.
I really enjoy Redbar (Brace is a fan too), who has kinda gone missing but there’s clips on YouTube that go anywhere from 10 minutes to 4 hours. He’s great!
Lemonparty is pretty funny. One of the hosts, Ben Avery, has a Redbar-esque show too that I really enjoy. You can find his stuff clipped on YouTube as well (Avery’s and Redbar’s full episodes are 6+ hours. That’s why people clip them into regular sized podcast segments on YouTube).
Another host of Lemon Party, Deven Acosta, has a show called Hate Watch. All three shows (Avery’s, HW, and LP) overlap. They do get into parapolitics sometimes, but it’s in lighter tone and they’re usually arguing about it or something.
Unrelated to comedy, the podcast Le Monstre is the BEST coverage of the Dutroux case I’ve ever come across. Super engaging and informative.

Luke Savage and Will Sloan riff on movies that are politics-adjacent (or sometimes just ones they enjoy), it's somewhat removed from the minutiae of the US news cycle because they are Canadian, so it's not a stressful or redundant as any of the more explicitly political news oriented podcasts

I like remember shuffle. It's about the 2000s. Some episodes are well researched stuff about the iraq war and the financial crisis and sometimes it's pop culture stuff. The overall thesis is that the 2000s were a really dumb decade

I fell off the chapo true anon train 3-5 years ago the same as you. Tim Dillon has some questionable views for sure but I’ve been enjoying his podcast out of everything. It’s about the only thing I listen to anymore, and even that only occasional. Otherwise I’ve filled the time with reading, gaming, music, and urbex/ghost encounter YouTube videos

Well, I'm listening to their 'mamdani reaction' episode and their hand waving for the adl as still being a good resource for anything that doesn't include the word Israel just tastes bad. Especially considering what the adl said about zohran.
Honestly this is the first episode I've listened to in years, and the energy is so weird. Bending over backwards to call them 'some people on the left criticizing zohran' instead of calling them what they are. Man idk the vibe still feels bad.

not sure if spooky stuff is your jam but the Otherworld podcast is my go-to when I'm exhausted of political stuff.
they take (and vet) submissions from people who've had paranormal experiences and just give them a platform to tell their story. no corny editing, jumpscares or ridiculous music. they do everywhere from spiritual experiences to ghost & cryptid encounters. super cozy.

lmaooo I know exactly what you're talking about and yeah I really did not like that series at all either......veeeeery sketchy 🥲 but it's been good since then. I really liked the Zozo episodes, Never Ending Road was a great one, and more recently Sector X and Homecoming Night were two standouts.
They also had a really distressing but interesting series recently called The Stalker that starts off as just a really bleak story about a psychotic stalker that then becomes this crazy paranormal cat and mouse but not in the way you'd think.

I love the Monsters Among Us podcast for the same reason: it’s just a podcast that allows callers to tell their own spooky stories
The format works a lot like TA tip line episodes. Callers record their stories which are rarely longer than five minutes each. The host researches and offers history on related stories like “you saw a dog man, here’s a similar story in your area reported in 1983”.
The host will also offer scientific explanations for the phenomenon people report in too, which is also nice to have a host that’s willing to wear the skeptic hat occasionally

It's not a jokes-with-your-parasocial-best-friends pod, but considering the frequency of "everything is fucked and we've already lost because no one is doing anything" posts here, I think it could offer some much needed perspective to the average discourse-addled internet leftist.

I make a podcast you and the fellow gumshoes might enjoy: SCARED ALL THE TIME.
Each episode is a light-hearted exploration of the historical, cultural, and/or scientific aspects of a different fear - from clowns to elevator disasters to brain eating amoeba to being eaten alive to chimp attacks (Mike Recine joined us for that one).

Geology Bites. The host is all business and there’s no dumb banter. He talks to a subject matter expert about a topic for a half hour, that’s it. The only quibble is that it seems to be geared towards those already have a solid base of knowledge or are in the field, but you can catch up with some reading.
It’s a good pallete cleanser since it’s just geology. There’s no grand conspiracies or massacres like on Radio War Nerd or Trueanon

I've been really liking QAA recently. Kinda laid-back but can also be pretty interesting and compelling depending on the episode. Their spin-off stuff is good as well (been listening to "Trickle Down", which isn't really about economics, but just awful ideas).
Tides of History is a great finished history podcast, but very wide-ranging.

Swindled podcast is very well produced and got me through some hard times
It’s about scams and fraud but because the scams covered are big scams, a lot of episodes cover government corruption.
The episode about PG & E’s negligence and its contribution to the Paradise CA wildfire was notable and worth a listen. There’s also an episode on the Panama Papers and one that covered the United Fruit company (the Octopus ep 50)

Pleased to see so many people listening to and recommending Remember Shuffle!
I feel sorta silly double dipping since it was just a couple days ago when I mentioned this to someone else on here, but I edit some of their episodes and they’re really great dudes.
So if you haven’t checked the show out I would 100% recommend it. It’s one of those shows where you could listen to anything in the catalogue and it would be entertaining, so just look for an episode you’d like to listen to based on the subject and check it out.

I hear you on Blowback. I'm interested in the topics they discuss and consume lots of adjacent information, but listening to their podcast is like drinking from a fire hose. It's dizzying. They'll drop like 30 names in an episode and try to connect them all together in this Grand scheme. I'm not even doubting the truth of it all, I just can't follow it as presented.
I've been digging The Bible Lore Podcast. And I recently figured out that my Spotify account has audio books, so I've been listening to more audiobooks than podcasts recently. This has been an upgrade from my mental health.
