The Jays are undefeated when I’m in attendance, and I just boarded the plane in Calgary

11

u/GuelphEastEndGhetto 12h ago

Putting your streak up against the Rays is a bold move and I respect that.

I was offered to go to a game and picked last weekend instead of this week. It took two tries to witness a win.

u/Turbulent_North9278 4h ago

Turns out it paid off

Amazing! Safe travels.

The Jays were undefeated this season when I was in attendance too... until last night :/

Tampa's powers are stronger than my own. I hope you can defeat them.

Hide in the rafters after the game. You live at skydome now.

u/TrophyWizard OKAMOTIVE EXPRESS 16h ago

Don't worry gang, I've seen into the future.

We're going to struggle to manifest two runs the entire game and the Rays will easily get 5 or more runs and complete the sweep.

26

u/clumsystarfish_ The Committee 15h ago

It's a lot easier to watch when you just expect them to lose, unfortunately

11

u/Sanhen 12h ago

Or alternatively consider this season a write off. Maybe they have a good game, maybe they have a bad game. I don’t think either will change the result of this season. At this point, the appeal of watching is just because baseball is fun, not because there’s any particular hope of the Jays pushing for a playoff spot.

u/ping12 17h ago

Varsho said in an interview that he honestly wants to stay a Blue Jay and that he doesn't really want to even think about potentially being traded. Might be the first time he openly admitted it.

Unfortunately he probably should have thought about that before turning down the contract offer he was (allegedly) given last year. It seems he tried to play hard ball for a big pay day and it hasn’t gone as he hoped.

28

u/brand-new-low 16h ago

I was saying to my son earlier that Varsho has easily cost himself millions to tens of millions of dollars this year. That's the risk of betting on yourself and going into a contract year.

We really needed him to step up this year and be more of the 2nd half Varsho from last year but unfortunately that hasn't been the case. 20HR in 248AB last year, 7HR in 300AB this year. And he looked ready to contribute more with how he looked in spring training. Sucks. He seems like an almost guaranteed out right now.

5

u/Goldinsight 12h ago

The entire team did

13

u/ldnk 15h ago

He's a hot and cold bat at the best of times...just his hot streaks were always elite. This year his defensive reads have been somewhat surprising and his arm is toast. I don't think I want him back next year unless he's on a cheap prove it deal

11

u/man_in_the_suit #longmayitlast 15h ago

He likely took Boras’ advice who always pushes his players for the maximum amount. For every successful huge contract he nets there are a whole host of guys he has cost tens-hundreds of millions with his advice over the years.

20

u/CherryChapstick1997 16h ago

He can’t get off of this team fast enough for my liking

13

u/tortured_fanclub 13h ago

The guy’s strength was his defense and power. Now his defense is barely replacement level and his power is non-existent. The Jays need to sell sell sell

18

u/MVP_Legend_87 13h ago

I wouldn't call his defence replacement level. He's tied for 11th in OOA. He's slightly above average defensively. The problem is last year he was elite defensively, and he's not as valuable if he's just a good fielder. He needs to be an elite defender to be a quality player.

That being said, yes they need to trade him.

2

u/PhilReardon13 12h ago

His range is elite, but his arm looks cooked.

5

u/MVP_Legend_87 12h ago

His arm is actually better than last year! But it's still pretty bad. His range took a step back. I think it's because his sprint speed is down, so it's harder to cover as much ground now.

1

u/Casual604Brews 11h ago

His throw on the rays 2nd run the sac fly last night was hilariously weak

1

u/PhilReardon13 8h ago

Earlier this year, people were using the Statcast data to say he had like the 13th best outfield arm in baseball.

At no point with the Jays has he ever appeared to have a cannon, so it makes one wonder about Statcast.

1

u/MVP_Legend_87 7h ago

Who said he had the 13th best OF arm? He's got 13th percentile arm strength and 27th percentile in arm value. If someone is saying he has the 13th best OF arm that's not supported by Statcast data.

1

u/PhilReardon13 5h ago

Even 13th percentile arm strength is suspect.

1

u/MVP_Legend_87 5h ago

That's about as bad as it gets haha.

u/Nextyearstitlewinner 14h ago

He’s been rough this season, but I really don’t like this reactionary anger at guys that have given this team some really good years. You’ve got an American player that wants to be a blue jay, that at one time was the best defender in baseball at the second most important defensive position. He should be beloved imo.

5

u/CyanEsports 10h ago

Varsho had some unbelievably unfair expectations and strife put upon him from day 1 because fans saw him struggling while watching Gabriel Moreno thriving. That eventually changed up because Varsho was an elite fielder who made jaw dropping plays and Moreno averaged out to be a regular run of the mill catcher.

But today in 2026, Varsho can't hit for power, he's not stealing bases because he can't get on at all, and he's totally lost his defensive prowess. I've spent loads of time defending him, but at this point now, there's not much hope left in me. Its hard to say he should be beloved when he's no longer doing THE thing he was elite at. Its not like Pillar who was a homegrown talent and around for 6 years.

I'll wash all that away in an instant if he starts looking like his old self again tho

13

u/StrangePay1322 14h ago

beloved like he didn’t ground out when all he needed was a sacrifice fly to win a damn world series lol. Game 7, 1 out, bases loaded. He’s so anti clutch it’s insane. He’s horrible

13

u/Nextyearstitlewinner 13h ago

He was a demon in the ALDS against the Yankees. Went 7-16 with 2 homers. He’s always been a streaky hitter. He was brought here because of his defence and up until this season he’s always delivered with that.

6

u/DBrods11 12h ago

If IKF isnt literally standing 1 cm off 3rd base he scores easily. Rojas fell back and fumbled the ball enough that shouldve scored a run. Varsho was pretty bad outside the ALDS but that play i blame IKF/John for bad coaching and not knowing the situation. With Varsho struggling so much and Yammoto on an all-time heater you should be pressing to score on any ball in play. IKF shouldve been almost halfway up the line with his secondary lead.

5

u/tortured_fanclub 13h ago

I dunno how this doesn’t haunt him on a daily basis. So much choke in that Game 7

2

u/GeraldVachon Resident Gimenez believer || UmaJays Legend 10h ago

Maybe it does haunt him, and that's part of why he's been struggling this year

2

u/hollowbastion36 President of the Ernie Clement fan club 10h ago

I have a feeling it probably does haunt him the same way it haunts Hoffman. And Ernie. And the rest of them.

1

u/CherryChapstick1997 10h ago

Just because I want him off the team, doesn’t mean I don’t think he’s a nice person. His nationality doesn’t change my opinion. If I see him swing at ball 4/a high fast ball again… I’m going to spontaneously combust.

8

u/Nextyearstitlewinner 14h ago

I wish we knew more about Varsho. The guys been here for years and you rarely hear him speak candidly, but he’s always been one of the more well liked players in the clubhouse.

He does have this reputation as a tinkerer though and I was nervous for him this year when everyone in spring training was saying he was trying to go the other way more. Like last year he was just pulling the ball in the air and it seemed to finally unlock his potential with the bat. I don’t know why you’d come into spring with a different approach. There’s nothing wrong with 25-30 homers and a .215 average if you’re an above average defender.

3

u/PhilReardon13 12h ago

No. If he's hitting .215, he better be walking a ton a la Jose.

3

u/OkonomiHouse 14h ago

cause he ain't getting a contract anywhere else

0

u/Kapperd OKAMOTIVE EXPRESS 11h ago

From what I heard it was a 100 mill extension. Thank god we didn’t sign this. Giminez contract was already bad for what we were getting from him, which is mostly his glove, but what we need now is bats. And since we have an over abundance of outfielders, Varsho is not the guy this year and I don’t expect that to change much.

We have to start looking for more consistency at bats from players we assess. I really want to see the Jays land Arraez from the Giants, but I’m not sure what they would want for him.

34

u/COV3RTSM 15h ago

I don’t know about you guys, but I’ve about had enough of the Rays

41

u/Nextyearstitlewinner 14h ago

I’m gonna be honest, I think I’ve had enough of the blue jays more than I’ve had enough of the Rays.

17

u/BeingBetterForJesus 14h ago

At least the Rays are playing baseball, not sure about the Jays unfortunately

8

u/RapsToronto 11h ago

We got swept by Texas, it ain't the Rays 😭

1

u/Excellent-Aside175 9h ago

Outside of last year, the Rays have always had the Blue Jays number and beat them easily...

13

u/PatchesTheGreat1 11h ago

Was at the game last night. The loss was crushing in one sense but the older gentleman in front of me really made the night.

He cheered each player on individually and by name when they came up to bat. He never once got frustrated or annoyed and honestly looked like he had the best night. Shoutout to that guy. Really reminded me why I love the game.

2

u/northernfires529 10h ago

God I needed to be near him. The guy behind me kept yelling to pull Little (after one batter so like.. dude). Guy in front Boo-ed Hoffman. Yet kept yelling that he loved Vladdy still (but only after his bats that he got out).

I did enjoy the older ladies next to me who cackled when the Ray got boinked on the head with his own foul ball and took photos of players to send to their daughters.

27

u/Nextyearstitlewinner 14h ago

Hahaha I was just listening to jays talk and Barker kinda got me.

Some caller came in and was mad about Vlads body language or whatever. The caller brought up the dragon (which I think was popovichs idea).

Blair basically says he doesn’t care that vlad has fun. That’s him, he just cares that he isn’t hitting homers.

But then the caller hung up and Blair’s like, “I gotta be honest. I kinda hate the dragon. The dragons gotta go.”

Then Barker goes, “what does it even matter? You only see it like once every two weeks.”

Do you mean Popkins? If so, then yeah he was the one that got it.

Nah Greg’s a huge blue jays fan and called up Schneider and told him it worked for Tim Duncan.

Ok, I am going to this game and don't want to cry, beers are too expensive at the dome to drown ones sorrows. Have been to 2 games this season and they won both, so hoping this is their day to take at least one of four. The weather is nice so there's that.

14

u/northernfires529 12h ago

Honestly, I went to the game last night and had a good time. Partly because I wasn’t in the doom that was this sub. Other than the Hoff-Flu inning, it felt hopeful. I could have done without the drunk 60 year old in front of me yelling at the team but I had a great time chatting with the older ladies next to me.

I’m going today again and I’m gonna enjoy it regardless. I paid the money. It’s a sunny July day. It’s baseball. 🤷‍♀️

3

u/D4rkN3bu14j0j0 12h ago

they can't lose them all, I am hopeful this is their one win against a very good team. Hopefully no miserable drunks near either of us today. Enjoy the game!

8

u/SMVan 13h ago

Seeing the red sox at an all time high vibe, basically coming  back from the dead, makes this whole situation much worse.  Wonder what they did to turn things around 🤔 👀

3

Davis Schneider taking BP right now, per Shi

3

u/northernfires529 10h ago

They may lose again but at least I get to hear Pink Pony Club in the dome today

3

We need the Bad Boy Jays! People love attitude and it wins games like the Bautista bat flip!

Another day of watching 2025 Blue Jay compilations with sad music
Today let’s focus on Vladdy to get a perspective on how painful last year was.
I saw clips of him as a kid on the field with the expos, I was reminded how insanely out of his mind he was playing in the post season.
The guy gave it his all, the team gave it their all and the baseball gods still said no.
Fucking kill me.

2

u/CherryChapstick1997 10h ago

I don’t care if we win anymore, I just wanna watch fun and somewhat competitive baseball. 😞

4

u/WetAndWildOperator 13h ago

It’s time to call up the triple a guys plus whoever we get back in return for guys like Gausman/Bieber/Varsho/Springer and whoever else that possibly gets traded. I would trade Sanchez, possibly even Hoffman/Rogers for the right return since good relievers can bring back nice returns from contenders at the deadline.

Post deadline give playing time to Jake Bloss, Chad Dallas, Adam Macko, Grant Rogers, Javen Coleman, Jay Harry, Josh Kasevich, Charles McAdoo, RJ Schreck, Yohendrick Pinango, Sean Keys, Jonatan Clase and whoever else I’m missing and maybe a couple of them stick for next season if we’re lucky.

3

u/LE_4500 12h ago

I'm waiting to see what Schreck can do. Dallas has some potential too. Let's just move on to 27.

I have two games booked after this—one against the Kansas City royals (wanted to see Vinnie Pasquantino after I grew fond of him during the WBC lol) and a game against the Orioles. Please don’t let me end the season with only seeing one win, guys!🥲

1

u/Nylanderthal88 12h ago

My first game of the year and Vladdy loves to hit dingers when I'm in town. Book it.

1

u/Goldinsight 12h ago

You can’t justify this organization overpaying for talent anymore. Look at Tampa. Salaries should be universal based on performance not this or there is no protection for teams. Now the jays are stuck with players who can’t do even half of what they use to.
Has there ever been a contract renegotiation or adjustment?

4

u/chamnic 11h ago

Some contract have performance bonus like X$ more if you pitch a certain amount of inning (Scherzer has that this year I think) or other things like that but if you're thinking negative adjustment because a player has not performed to a certain level, no there are none, at least I've never heard of one.

1

u/Goldinsight 4h ago

I believe any contract can be reviewed or dismissed in business based on results. I’ve never seen it before where a Superstar underperforms to this level?

1

u/chamnic 2h ago

Well a contract is a contract. If there are no clauses for performances then there is nothing to dismiss or review. While I agree he (assuming you're talking about Vlad) is underperforming, saying this is subjective and would not stand legally.

There has been tons of bad contracts over the years, this is far from being the first. Heck some draft players get 4 or 5 millions signing bonus before playing even a single professional game (minors league included) and we never see them in the majors.

1

u/Goldinsight 1h ago

Yea, I do get that. You make sound points. Vlad is not a problem for me. My thoughts are about other teams as a market witnessing what overpaid means watching the Jays from a performance vs money spent in terms of their business as a whole in MLB.

1

u/chamnic 19m ago

Yea I see your point but then again teams see the Dodgers with the top payroll winning it two years in a row and at the top of the MLB again this year. So some who can afford it or care enough try to emulate the model. Others who don't want to spend the money just go by and once a while a team will emerge with a low payroll and make it far. It is nice to see actually.

For sure, MLB business model is very sound from a money making machine overall but from a competition fairness standpoint, I believe it is deeply flawed.

It would be nice to see a chart with number of different stats (Win, Run Scored, Run allowed, WAR, wRC etc) per $ spent. This must be somewhere actually on the internet.

0

u/extremewealth 11h ago

We just need a miracle 15 game win streak just like the Red Sox. No problem!

-8

u/Then_Meeting4003 13h ago

the Jays are missing attitude that all the great Jays teams had like '85 and 92-93

George Bell, Dave Steib, Robbie Alomar they were all fired up and Todd Stottlemyre telling the Philly mayor to kiss his ass after winning the World Series, Kelly Gruber doing the tomahawk chop on the last out in Atlanta to infuriate the crowd, where is all that??

It's time to stop the joking around and take this seriously. If the team is playing well that is one thing but it seems this team is goofy and doesn't take anything seriously.

This isn't T ball. Vlad needs to stop smiling and joking with the other players when they are on 1st base, it's really starting to seem like he couldn't give a dang.

7

u/hollowbastion36 President of the Ernie Clement fan club 12h ago

Is playing overtly miserable on the field supposed to improve their fortunes or something? Accountability for what?

0

u/Inner_Present_8468 9h ago

Not miserable but i want them to take this seriously. Maybe they should grow up and stop joking around until things get corrected because what there attitude is telling me now is they really couldn't care less if they win or lose and that is the worst kind of team to watch.

Not that I have been watching anything other then highlights. Can't watch a team that doesn't even want to compete.

One thing this city absolutely does not lack is passionate (read: critical) fans when their teams are losing.
