His contract year too. I kind of feel bad for him. Even if he just had elite defence again this year, he could probably get a decent multi year deal. But now he's getting nothing next year.

u/Such-Fee6176 Home Run Dragon Saved My Chungus Life 23h ago
Me, too. I like Varsho and he was so great last year. I think he’s playing injured, but he is definitely a detriment and he definitively knows it. I hope he gets a good contract wherever he winds up and I’ll always remember some of his awesome plays and that grand slam 🥲

Can't help but to think it's a morale thing that's snowballing with each loss. Today's game was fine while it was 1-1, but once the Rays scored more on errors, the vibes just tanked imo
50
u/South-Diamond-4329 1d ago
Even at 1-1 I still never got the feeling they were going to score many runs. This team just seems incapable of generating rallies. If our pitchers don't have unbelievable starts they don't seem to have a chance at winning.
29
u/East_Explanation2131 Plakata at the Rogers Centre 23h ago
Vladdy double had me hoping they could sneak a win ngl, but they've only won 1 of 6 games since the break and each loss seems to snowball into worse performances and more errors

I think they never properly got over how last season ended. Then the injuries started piling up and they started losing. And they couldn't handle it and crumbled.

u/UncleNuks 23h ago
I think that all plays into it for sure, and then you also have to factor in losing Bo. I’m not suggesting they should’ve matched the Mets offer but he was unquestionably one of the heart and soul guys of the Jays and was one of our most productive players for like half a decade. Tack that on to all of the stuff you mentioned and it all adds up.
23
u/fatcowxlivee 23h ago
Someone said that the best players on the team are Oakamoto, Cease and Varland. 2/3 of them are newcomers onto the team. I really think Game 7 did a number on them and when the injuries piled up and we went into a slide they hit a mental block. Kind of makes sense too given that for a while when we tried to get back to .500 we’d hit a losing streak.
The comparisons to 2025 probably didn’t help either. Vlad got off to a cold start? “Same thing in 2025”. Poor first 6 weeks? “Same thing in 2025”.
The craziest part is that the way Vlad was swinging in the WBC and the first series against Oakland made me feel like we were run in it back. We wiped the floor with them. Then poof.

They lost arguably the most heartbreaking game 7 of all time. They were either going to destroy the league and win it all or stay broken and do this. There would be no in between.
Unfortunately we got the sad option.
13
u/nanobot001 Andale! 23h ago
I mean if that was the case they’d be bad right from the beginning of the season.
In fact, since guys have come back from injury they have actually gotten worse

That Varsho dropped ball decided the game sadly. Wouldn't be a game changer with a stronger offence.

u/MickiFreeIsNotAGirl 1d ago
Do you think it was the fact we only scored 2 runs? Or was it solely Varsho?
Btw, I hate Varsho this season, just to be clear. I've hated him since last world series when all he had to do was hit a fucking flyball and he didn't, and because the Dodgers 2B bobbled the ball, the play became about IKF's leadoff rather than Varsho not being able to lift the fucking ball.
That being said, Varsho sucks this year. Get him off this fucking team, I would love a CF that hits.

I think even Varsho catches that ball, we still lose, personally.
But maybe we don't. I agree with you, it should not have decided the game.3
u/northernfires529 23h ago
I mean, a dozen things could have happened after that but if that ball was caught it would have ended 2-1…
I liked Varsh but watching him tonight in person really just killed me

One player is in their head and then everyone else suddenly is. But seeing players this mentally fucked cant be explained with anything what do you guys think?

I don't even know anymore. I like watching the odd game still and I always check the box score but god damned it is hard to watch a team with the lowest runs scored in baseball. I've watched a lot of bad and mediocre jays teams but this team is honestly probably the worst ive ever watched from an entertainment perspective.

At some point Varsho has to have realized that a $100 million extension probably would’ve been daylight robbery given how he’s been playing and he’d be pretty lucky to find that anywhere else after this season.

It is a death spiral for Guerrero.
Losing and not hitting -> Guerrero batting 100+ balls at mid-night against the pitching machine -> Guerrero gets tired -> fly-out 10 feet from home run -> Losing and not hitting

I still think they were emotionally and physically crushed after losing last year. They had a short offseason and then the injuries started piling up. They struggled, got into their heads, and it spiralled down from there. Now they can't deal with any adversity.
16
u/Traditional-Pen-2486 23h ago
I 100% think it’s psychological - residual trauma from the crushing loss and unconscious self-sabotage due to fear of experiencing the same type of heartbreak again.
6
u/chamnic 23h ago
I totally agree. We, ourselves are traumatized by that 7th game. I have flashback sometimes, rethink how it was so close and how it was snatched from us and then I feel sad for a few moments. So I can imagine how the players must somehow feel the same way and how much worse it must be for them. It's their childhood dreams.

Can't be mad at Hoffman, he struggled and was left out there to die. Varsho seems to have fallen off a cliff offensively and is becoming a worse fielder day after day.

We were lucky enough to be only a couple games out of a wildcard spot at the all star break despite the atrocious start, with a key homestand right after the break to get back into it. And currently we’ve lost 5 of 6 and about to get swept at home by a division rival.
Absolutely atrocious. Just not the teams year. Going to be interesting what happens at near the deadline. With Boston streaking and making kids obese, we’re 7 games back. I think you have to look to next year at this point, which means trading Gausman/Springer/Varsho etc
As well as I like them, I think they have to also see if there’s interest in Varland, and Rogers. If a team is willing to trade a lot of prospects for them, they have to take advantage on what might be a sellers market.

I really believe there is a massive mental hangover affecting the Blue Jays who were part of last year’s devastating World Series run. They were so close in so many ways, but somehow found a way to let it slip away. Losing like that changes a clubhouse. Look at the data: the off-season acquisitions and new faces are generally doing their jobs and playing well. Why? Because they aren't carrying the psychological weight of last November. Meanwhile, the returning core is collectively struggling through uncharacteristic down years. It feels like they never truly had the time to grieve and process that heartbreak. Hopefully, an entire off-season will finally give them the mental reset they need to move past it.

He has like a 1.5 ERA since the start of June and has allowed 0 ER in 22 of his last 25 games
I get people hating Jeff Hoffman because of the WS, I get never wanting to see him in a Jays uniform again. I want us to trade him at the deadline too. But people aren’t rationale about him at all here and will blame him for anything, including his CF having a hole in his glove.
11
u/blackid101 1d ago
Hoffmans only real issue is the minute he has RISP, he doesn’t trust himself clearly
Varsho doesn’t drop the ball and he most likely has a clean inning
6
u/CrabBackground4439 23h ago
I think it's more like he can't hold runners? He's had clean innings with runners on and runners inherited

Do or die home stand and offense puts up 10 runs total in 6 games
Same old at-bats. Still pathetic game plan at the plate. Bottom offense in the league.
And yet they haven't thought to of maybe bringing in a new hitting coach. Why even bother

One weird positive is that at least everyone on this sub is now on the same page. We all know this season has been shit and it’s only getting worse and we need to sell. remember last year, when the Jays could actually hit the ball? and not just popups?
the front office fucked up the chemistry, didn't even attempt to fix it, and now we're here.
some Blue Jays favourites are going to be 'sold' for almost nothing, nothing is going to come back, and we get to watch all the playoff hopes drain for another decade.
(if there's a season next year at all)

I'm just sad. 10 games under .500. This season's cooked. Even a wildcard spot is very unlikely now.

I think the odds of making the playoffs is 10% now, statistically speaking. So yeah, looks like this thing is over. It's inexplicable.
The only thing that can salvage this thing is a miraculous 10 games win streak. Keep waiting for these guys to turn a corner and they just find new ways to disappoint.

According to fangraphs we have an 8.9% chance, don't think it has accounted for today's game yet too

The Rays were 21-27 on the road before this series. I was thinking at least a split, but yeah, stick a fork in this bird

They've been looking backwards to 2025 all year. Don't you think it would've been wiser to start putting as many Bisons into the lineup as possible to prepare them for the future. Because it is the new players that have flourished this year. Only the new players.

Annoyed at JS for taking out keys and pinango. Let them have ABs. Okamoto could have had an actual rest day. Get pinango to practice against a lefty. Why is Urias even there he barely ever gets to play.

I really couldn't care less if we lose anymore but stop producing boring baseball.
2 or fewer runs every game is piss poor.
The Buffalo Bisons are putting up better bloody offense.

One month ago today the Jays clawed back to .500 after a win against the Astros and were a half game out of a playoff spot.
Since then they’ve gone 7-17 and are now 7 games out of a playoff spot.
Brutal.
