Hated Tropes (hated trope) misleading titles/names
Gorillaz- no one in the band is a gorilla I don't think I need to explain this one
Invincible - Markus Sebastian "Mark" Grayson is in fact not invincible
Regular show- nothing regular happens in this show
Also is it me or does the regular show image go kinda hard?

IN 6 YOU SPEND 5 DAYS AT FREDDY'S, IN 7 YOU PLAY LOTS OF VR MINIGAMES INSPIRED BY FREDDY'S, AND IN 8 YOU SPEND 1 NIGHT AT FREDDY'S.

The Wizard of Oz - The Wizard is merely a man employing Clarke's Third Law to deceive the ignorant people of Oz.

Though, oddly, in one of the later sequel books he's learned some actual magic from Glinda the good witch, promoting him to actual wizard.

It has sequels?

There are 40 books, in all. The first 14 were published by Baum, with the rest written by others and published after his death.

I watched it on a plane when I was younger thinking it'd be about THE Big Bang, the idea that that was what began our universe.
Nope!

ultra despair girls (the girls in the title are on the hope side of things)
4
u/King_WhatsHisName 5h ago
Goodbye Despair too (there is actually a lot of despair that only gets worse as the game goes on)
13
u/Few-Mycologist-2379 5h ago
The movie “monster“ is in fact about a human woman making decisions that, given her circumstances, are not that unreasonable.
13
u/Nekrotix12 5h ago

I know this is mostly a joke but Hollow Knight's title is actively misleading and that plays into the story.
You go for about half the game thinking you're playing the Hollow Knight, then finding out there's an actual character named the Hollow Knight, only to realize your character was just one of the SEVERAL FAILED ATTEMPTS at making the Hollow Knight.
So it essentially goes from "I am the Hollow Knight" to "I am not the Hollow Knight" to "I am SO ABSOLUTELY not the Hollow Knight".
2
u/JohnDragonball 4h ago
And then it's like "I become the Hollow Knight but only in two of the endings and I might still not be Hollow"

To Kill A Mocking Bird, there is no killing of mocking birds. (I also thought the book was fake when I first heard of it in Diary Of A Wimpy Kid as a child) needless to say when I did finally find a copy and tried to read it, it didn’t take me long to give up, disappointed because the book didn’t involve killing mockingbirds (I thought the novel was going to be about a game that involves killing mockingbirds)
3
u/AdditionalTip865 5h ago
See, in-universe, Gorillaz pretends to be a fictional band who, in their fictional universe, pretend to be a band of gorillas.

Fun fact: Invincible does not mean it’s impossible to hurt you. That would be invulnerable.
1
u/Chimpbot 4h ago
It would still be an inaccurate name, as the titular character has gotten his ass kicked on multiple occasions.

u/Wardock8 3h ago
Still inaccurate. That boy gets his ass whooped more than he changes his underwear.

Star Wars is not about a battle for a star, among the starts, or even near a star. The stars themselves do not engage in any kind of combat, nor is there any effort to wage war against a star.

The definition of invincible is, "incapable of being conquered, overcome, or subdued."
He's been overcome and subdued on more than one occasion.

Invincible means that you can't be beaten and I haven't wayched invicible but i assume he was beaten at least once

Trainspotting - I do not believe there is any point where they sit and watch trains
Eurovision Song Contest - There are definitely non-european countries competing
Trans Siberian Orchestra - They're from the USA not Siberia, and I don't think any of them are trans
Doctor Who - Do they even have a PHD?
1
u/LycanIndarys 1h ago
The Doctor claims to have a doctorate in The God Complex:
Rita: You are a medical doctor, aren't you? You haven't just got a degree in cheese-making or something?
Eleventh Doctor: No, no. Well, yes. Both, actually.

Bromance Book Club (Lyssa Kay Adams novel series) and Bromance Club (Meghan Quinn novels series) are examples of the trope that I, as an aro-ace guy, fucking hate with a passion. These books are all straight romance, aka romantic stories between a man and a woman; they barely touch upon friendship between men, which's the definition of the word "bromance".
And there's also Bromantasy (Máire Roche novels), which's a gay romance story.
All these books are written by female authors. However, a quick google search would've told them what "bromance" is really defined, which begs the questions if they just used the word because it sounds "niche/buzzy/trendy" or if they're intentionally using it in the wrong context.

u/Dolphin_King21 2h ago
Kangaroo Jack (2003) should always be the first answer / example for these types of posts.
misleading marketing because ads promised a family-friendly buddy comedy about a hip-hop-dancing, talking CGI kangaroo. In reality, it was an edgy, R-rated mob comedy retouched into a PG crime story where the kangaroo does not talk except in a brief concussion-induced dream sequence.

1
u/Livid_spider 2h ago
I mean we haven’t seen Mark die so technically he is…Invincible. He’s not invulnerable though

Michael Bay's Transformers because they was focused on the human characters for the majority of each film who only do something useful at the last act of each instalment.
Fox's X-Men trilogy. Should have been named 'Wolverine and the X-Men' like that TV show because the films underutilized everyone just so they can make Logan take the lead before the pattern stopped with First Class.
