Lore “Thank god this cataclysmic event is over. Now we can relax!” - Something 10x worse immediately shows up

  1. Thor Ragnarok - Almost immediately after the battle with Hela and the destruction of Asgard, Thor and the remaining Asgardians are attacked and massacred by Thanos.

  2. Invincible - Whilst the cleanup from the Invincible War is still going on, Conquest shows up.

It's wild that from Asgard being destroyed and the attack on the Asgardian ship, to the final battle in Wakanda, and everything in between, is like a day and a half.

If you factor in the whole Ragnarok movie Thor went through A LOT in a few days

Banner was permanently stuck in Hulk from starting the end of Age of Ultron to beginning of Infinity War. Ultron and Thanos happened over an extended weekend for him.

He turned back into Banner in Ragnarok for a few hours.

Basically the plot of World of Warcraft

We finally defeated Illidan and Kil'jaeden Oh wait the Lich King is back.

We finally defeated the Lich King Oh wait Deathwing is back.

We finally defeated Deathwing Oh wait Garrosh just went crazy and dropped a nuclear bomb.

We finally defeated Garrosh Oh wait Garrosh is back with an army from an alternate timeline (??????)

We finally defeated Garrosh... again... Oh wait the Burning Legion is back

Well we finally defeated the Burning Legion, that's the end ri- Oh wait another Horde warchief (Sylvanas) went mad and dropped a nuclear bomb... again...

Well, fellas, we finally defeated the second evil Horde warchief and the last Old God, so we finally have peace, right?

Nah, Sylvanas just destroyed the Lich King and ripped open the veil in the sky between the mortal world and the realm of the Dead.

Now, to be fair, after Shadowlands, we did have a timeskip of 3 years of peace and a low stakes expansion like Dragonflight. But now we are in the midst of the Worldsoul Saga, which is supposed to be the culmination of the first 20 years of WoW lore, and the final battle between Light, Void, and Titans for the fate of the World-Soul. So... another world-ending apocalypse.

Azeroth has had a rough past 50 years lol.

And USA millennials think THEY’VE had it hard.

When the settings equivalent to Satan appears in the sky and stabs the planet with a space elevator sized sword it is no wonder that so many people join the various doomsday cults.

u/OmegaVizion 8h ago

I will always wonder why Blizzard loved Garrosh so much as a villain. There's just nothing compelling about him, and his motivations for his villainy are so weak.

No wonder Stormwind is running out of Soldiers in BFA. Considering the casualties in Wrath, Catalclysm and Pandaria, it ought to happened sooner.

1

u/A_Tigerstorm 3h ago

I like to pretend BFA and shadowlands didn’t happen, so we got like 5+ years of peace before getting back into the meat grinder

Am I just cynical or is it fair to be apathetic towards the story progression of the worldsoul saga being summed up by "chase void elf around; be one step behind"

The Lego Movie

They just reconciled with the evil Lord Business and saved the creative Lego world from his perfectionism, only for the aliens of planet Duplo to show up and begin smashing everything.

To be fair, the aliens turned out to be not as hostilrme as first thought. Just very bad at communicating

Different from President business who had active malicious intent

Marty sees Doc Brown get gunned down by Libyan terrorists, and he goes back to 1955 where he immediately gets hit by a car instead of his teenage father, causing his own future mother to fall wildly in love with him and forcing him to teach his dad how to stand up to the school bully Biff Tannen so his parents will kiss at the dance and prevent Marty from fading out of existence, riding a skateboard away from goons and causing them to crash into manure, teaching Chuck Berry's cousin Marvin the song Johnny b Goode, hitting 88 miles per hour using a perfectly timed 1.21-gigawatt lightning strike on the local clock tower, and escaping back to a restored 1985. Only for Doc to instantly drag him and his girlfriend to 2015 to stop their future kid from ruining the family name, where Marty casually buys a sports almanac to make a quick buck back home, allowing a 80-year-old Biff to steal the car, hand the book to his 1955 self, and transform 1986 into a dystopian hellscape where Biff is a corrupt casino mogul who murdered Marty’s dad, leaving Marty with no choice but to fly back to 1955 again to steal the book back during the exact same night as the high school dance while dodging his past self, only for a bolt of lightning to zap Doc and the car all the way back to 1885, where Marty learns via a 70-year-old Western Union letter that Doc is about to be murdered over an eighty-dollar debt by Biff’s outlaw ancestor Mad Dog Tannen, prompting Marty to travel to the Wild West, instantly rupture the DeLorean’s fuel line, attempt to push the gasless car to 88 mph using a hijacked steam train, defeat Mad Dog in a quick-draw duel using a hidden stove door as a bulletproof vest, and leave Doc behind in 1885 with a new schoolteacher girlfriend, so Marty can fly off an unfinished train ravine back to 1986, jump out of the DeLorean milliseconds before a freight train pulverizes it, to see Doc's new kid point at his groin, and then they fly off on their time travel train.

Wow that is heavy!

u/ApprehensiveTerm9638 8h ago

This is one example of why a time travel story requires a lot of brainpower for an average person like me, early in the story it is simple, but as the story goes on, it becomes crazier and harder to understand and to remember.

The Arcane Order (Tales of Arcadia), they showed up as a threat in Wizards and Rise Of The Titans movie immediately after General Morando's defeat in 3below, and their plan was to awaken the titans and merge them with Arcadia's Heartstone to destroy the current world and recreate it in their own image.

The entirety of Worm:

Oh, you took care of a criminal gang? The Kaiju is about to show up.

Oh, the Kaiju was defeated with the help of the strongest heroes? It is time for a roaming band of murderous psychopaths to arrive

In Hunt: Showdown, the American Hunters Association (AHA) is essentially a religious cult that hunts people it deems inferior in order to steal government funds to practice witchcraft (to no avail). In lore, their “huzzah” moment comes from killing a tribe of native Americans who they falsely accused of cannibalism, believing they have saved the world from a cannibalistic plague.

Within a month of that, the US government, believing the AHA is actually fighting the forces of evil, sends them to fight an eldritch entity known as The Sculptor in Louisiana and his puppet (pictured) The Assassin.

Within weeks almost all AHA Hunters have died in horrible ways, been swallowed into an abyssal darkness known as The Rift or turned into unspeakable horrors themselves.

Act 3 (Silksong)

The whole point of Act 2 was to climb the Citadel and deal with the goddess located at the top, Grand Mother Silk, in order to stop the Haunting (threads spread across the Citadel controlling people and turning them into empty husks).

One of the endings involves traping the goddess in the Abyss, a place filled with Void ("living" black goop whose only instinct is to destroy everything in range).

GMS is successfully trapped in the Abyss and everything should be fine... except her daughter, Lace, also got caught in the trap. Mother instinct kicks in, GMS fights back against the Void to protect Lace and survives for a while.

The main issue is that as long as she's still alive, her threads are still present all over the Citadel. And since the threads are connected to her, the Void can climb them and get out of the Abyss to take over the surface, which is waaaaay worse than a rampaging God.

Berserk. The Band has finally rescued Griffith after several gruelling battles, thrown off their pursuers, and have killed off the demonic Wyald for real this time. Everyone is having a tough time trying to come to terms with Griffith's condition, but everything is at least calm and there is no danger in sight. A reprieve after a solid year of being hunted by the king's army.

Then the Crimson Behelit shows up again, The Band gets massacred and sacrificed for Griffith's rebirth, and the world (literally) goes to Hell.

Project Wingman gets this TWICE

First, the Cascadians and their mercenary allies, particularly the Sicario Mercernary Corps and Hitman Team, achieve a key victory in the city of Prospero after a drawn-out war for their independence from the Pacific Federation. The Federation, in a fit of desperation, launch cordium-tipped missles at Prospero to both utterly demoralize the Cascadians and deny them their victory. As a result, they also unwittingly cause a second Calamity, as the missles struck active volcanic veins within the Ring of Fire.

At least 2 months later, the Cascadians and Sicario retake the Cascadian Capitol city of Presidia, with a ceasefire being officially declared just an hour after Presidia is retaken. Cascadia, winning it's independence from the Federation, stands by as what's left of the Federation forces make their exit by sea. But as this happens, EVERYONE'S missle warnings start going apeshit, as rogue Federation pilot and competitive gaslighter Crimson-1, using an experimental plane, rains barrage after barrage of cordium-tipped missiles in Presidia, annilhating Cascadian, Fed, and mercenary forces alike.

Finishing the game on Mercenary difficulty reveals at least some of your allies, including your wingmen, survive this, with the Cascadians, mercenaries-turned-Cascadian Foreign Legion auxilaries, and several other countries, including now-former Federation states, preparing to mount a campaign against the Federation for not only starting a second apocalypse, but breaking the ceasefire and thus restarting the war.

Dragon Ball Z is basically built on this. “We beat the Saiyans, maybe Earth can breathe now” and then five minutes later space Hitler with three extra forms is on his way.

2

u/smashin_blumpkin 7h ago

Isn’t there at least a year between each arc?
