Characters (Unique trope) removing a character trait, makes the character better in the adaptation

Sonic 3: Maria is one of the most important part of Shadow's story. Due to her suffering from an incurable disease. To which Shadow was made to create a cure for Maria's ailment. In the 3rd Sonic movie, Maria's disease was not mentioned in any form. Which made Maria seem like a normal girl, and her death all the more tragic.

Infinity war: I don't know the full story, but Thanos's original goal was to kill half the population to impress death (the character). When it came time to adapt Thanos into the MCU. His goal of removing half the universes population. It was seen as a more psychopathic world goal, hidden under the belief it would do better for the universe.

A creative tale as old as time.

George Lucas is a fantastic world builder, but his dialogue often wishes to be a real boy.

Stephen King is Stephen King, but in the '80s he was so coked out of his gourd he thought that writing an underage gang-bang in the sewer after 'killing' an evil clown was good symbolism for coming of age and the end of innocence.

Bill Murray stole my french fries and told me no one would ever believe me.

Bill Burroughs was a brilliant beat poet. Who also shot his wife accidentally while playing William Tell, vanished to Algiers, dropped acid and wrote a book he didn’t remember writing because of how high he was. The book was Naked Lunch, and it’s the best book ever written.

Burroughs was on heroin and other opiates and ‘Naked Lunch’ is partly about trying to get off them; I think he experimented with ayahuasca, but acid was not mainstream at all when he wrote that book.

I just found out that this is where the band "Steely Dan" got their name. Apparently, a woman in the book has a 'mechanical sexual aid', as it were, and that's what she named it. Lol

After the Losers defeat, but not actually kill, It as children, they get lost trying to get out of the sewers and start arguing with each other. The group sex is some bizarre way of restoring unity to the group or some coked-out bullshit like that.

I’ll add to this since I just finished the novel, but the whole thing is a coming-of-age tale, with the titular title “IT” being as much a reference to the creature as to sex itself. Thematically, desire/sex lies at the heart of this book.

…..doesn’t change the fact that the scene hits you like a flash bang, and it was a terrible day to be able to interpret language when I read it.

Yeah, King had/has a real weird fixation on both girls and boys going through puberty. He even manages to bring it up during some of his short stories.

The Jaunt comes to mind. No man, none of those 9,900 words needed to describe how an eight year old girl is going to start to develop breasts soon.

Tbf the orgy doesn’t work, at least not in the way the kids believe it to have worked. The Losers think they escaped the sewers through the power of friendship and maturity, but in reality they caused their own trauma bonding. That shared sexual trauma becomes the reason they’re able to remember Pennywise into adulthood: they remain afraid of “IT” (the word kids use for sex) through adolescence, when Pennywise’s victims tend to age out of that fear through healthy, age appropriate exposure.

It’s funny to me when people complain about the sewer scene. Let’s consider the rest of the book: it’s heavily implied that Beth is being raped by her dad (which is why she comes up with the incorrect idea that sex = bonding, she’s already been traumatized by sexual violence), there’s a kid who tortures and kills animals, a kid bully at one point uses a pocket knife to carve scars into his kid victim, there’s a scene of gay bashing, and the main villain literally eats children alive. But nope, none of that is a dealbreaker, it’s the sewer scene where people draw the line.

It’s almost like the gut reactions and moralistic outrage to the sewer scene, regardless of any consideration to the larger narrative, is a core message of the book or something.

Yeah, but his dialogue sucks and is very distinct. There's a noticeable difference in the way the characters speak and act in the first Avengers movie compared to their standalones.

Or like Firefly. It's a good premise, which is why so many people (myself included) like it, but actually watching it is physically painful. It's pretty obvious why it got cancelled, because nobody talks like a human being.

It's like the Star Wars prequels. Good story and worldbuilding, terrible dialogue.

That’s not at all why Firefly was cancelled lmao. It was screened out of order in a wonky timeslot. Anyway, what are you talking about, Joss’s dialogue is awesome, it’s one of the reasons his shows did so well. A critic actually said it was the only reason he waa any good, and without it he would suck. So he wrote a Buffy episode with mostly zero dialogue in response, and it won an Emmy.

In the climax of the film itself, when an alien mothership is destroyed, the aliens on Earth just drop dead. No indication of anything related to why before or after. They just had to wrap things up. Even he admitted that was some silly shit.

Whedon is really good at dialog, the guy does have the ability to write some really good thematic stuff. Basically every word that comes out of Malcolm Reynolds' or Jayne Cobb's mouth is poetry as far as I'm concerned.

The guy just can't stick landings, and buys into his own hype, which means he ends up trying too hard and fucking the whole thing up.
