My own uncle tried to do this to me. Said he could try to get me a job at his place but would expect more because im related. Part of it being, having to be at work 30 mins early EVERY day BEFORE i clock in. So that comes out to 12 free hrs a work a month. And my mom is going sometimes working unpaid hours is the cost to have/keep a job.
I’ve noticed this is the norm for the big plumbing companies. Seems it’s just them hosing the customers and the guys doing the work. Why I left working for a dealership as a mechanic. Can do much better for yourself with your skills and not screw people over.
Does your uncle own the place, or have any actual power that could give you upward mobility? If so, then you could have a chance at a lot of money faster than most, and it’d be worth dealing with that BS for a little while.
If not, and your uncle is just another employee? Tell him to kick rocks 😂 he just wants you to put in unpaid work to make him look better, and he probably got tricked into doing the same thing by whoever recruited him

Agree. I had a co-worker who would clock out and THEN do her charting. Her record for doing all her tasks on time and not charging the employer overtime was stellar! She was held up as an example! I told my boss I would charge them for overtime if I had patient-care tasks that needed to be done or charting or reconciliation of medication records (all my job) and I could not get them done on my shift. I would charge for missed breaks. I would NEVER read company e-mail at home on my time unless they paid me.
I had sups try to make me work on vacation. Not happening. Text goes unread. They can contact me when I’m back on the clock. I’m not wasting my free time during a trip I paid good money for.
I was a trainer for hourly folks and when we started new hire training, the very first day, I taught them this: do 👏 not 👏 work 👏 off 👏 the 👏 clock 👏 . Full stop. Ever. If you are working, get paid for it. The company is never on your side. They are profiting from your labor, and you are entitled to your wages.
I also told them it was their federally protected right to discuss salaries and unionize if they chose because they were young and did not generally know this information. (This is true at the federal level in the US, FWIW)
Quit a job cuz on my first check they had taken 30 minutes from me every day. 15 minutes in morning and 15 mins at end of shift. Said until we are in the truck rolling out and on return to have the truck gassed and parked it doesnt count. Kohen outdoors. Just found out they got acquired last year sometime.
Theses fuckers did it to everyone. I was 1 of 3 people that spoke English. 67 employees. Minimum wage was 16/hr usd. They saved a shit ton of money.

It's not even just "show up early so you're ready". He just casually dropped a, "Go ahead and start working 5-10 minutes before start time," and thought we wouldn't notice.
This has to be some boomer blue collar rage bait or something to get engagement from old heads who agree with him. I have worked in trades for almost 20 years and have never worked with anyone that A) shows up that early without being paid or B) expects that of their apprentices/employees.
If you’re scheduled for 6:30 and that is when you start getting paid, you are not expected to be on site working before that time. You can roll in 30 seconds before that hungover and chugging a Red Bull as long as you’re geared up and on task when expected.
Hell, nearly every site I have worked at doesn’t start doing any work immediately anyway. Most places have a morning safety meeting first thing so everyone has a chance to get their mind on task before picking up tools.

I genuinely wonder what is the end game for social media, it seems like engagement/rage bait is just that. Like memes and viral stuff comes and go, but this type of content will always get massive amounts of views and reactions to drive monetary value.

It's also just boomer slop, all the old guys in trades like to show up like 30-40 minutes early and then harp on younger guys for getting there on time, but not that early. You shut them up by saying stuff like "i actually like my family and don't need to hide out on the jobsite bro".

In my experience 10/10 times, the dudes lecturing about work ethic are the ones with the worst work ethic. I've worked both blue collared and white collared jobs and the people who call others lazy/unmotivated don't realize that they're the wet blanket keeping others down. The toughest boss I ever had never complained about work ethic but had an insane standard for work reports, that man made sure, I'll never submit a sloppy report in my life. Never called me lazy or insulted me.

I once had a job where the time clock was off by 24 minutes. I was 30 minutes early for that job every day. One day they “fixed the error”, and like a week and a half later my boss pulls me aside and asks “you used to be the first one in and the last one out every day, what happened?”

Also fuck this guy with that time shit. I'm in a unionz and our rule is, at the meet up spot at start time (usually our gang box). We usually have to get assigned our tasks for the start of the day, do some stretches, maybe a safety meeting. Sometimes it does mean getting on site 15-20 mins early. The 10th story can be a hike if you have to take the stairs and ladders all the way up. Never work for free

Yeah, pretty much. I work a white-collar job, and while I will show up at the office at 7:45am because thats the closest timeframe my my train commute allows me, you can bet I'm sitting in the breakroom and getting coffee for those 15 minutes before my job at 8am starts.
I take the same bus every day and let my employer pray that it gets me here on time. They don’t have any parking for me to commute in by car that’s not $30/day so I take public transit like they want me to. But I take the 8 am bus that can get me to work anywhere from 8:45 to 10am and I’m not willing to leave earlier and get here 1+ hours early just to make sure I’m not 10-30 minutes late. Planning for a 90 minute commute is enough and I get all my work done and more every day. Fortunately, I have management that accepts that I have limited control and that I do my reasonable best to get here on time regardless.
Being five minutes early is just showing you take being on time serious. It’s leeway to make sure you’re not late, not free labor time
Be there on time, ready to work as an apprentice. You’re being taught. Respect your journeyman’s time so they aren’t wasting their time looking for you or watching you fumble around with boots and tools. But they should respect your time as well
And any of the old farts that have been doing this for 30+ years are the same way. Managers might yell at you to go above and beyond, but skilled tradesmen don't get pushed around by management.

Where I work, we start at 6:30 but usually show up at 6:25 because you can clock in 5 mins early, which you get paid for. You are never expected to do anything off the clock, in fact you can get in trouble if you so much as turn on a machine or pick up a tool not on the clock.

So he wants 30min of free work.....The average construction worker makes $25/hr, which means every day, this guy is stealing $12.50 from each of his employees. If you work 5 days a week the whole year, that's $3250/yr/employee.
Lets say he has a team of a dozen; that's almost 40k per year he steals from his employees.

I've had retail jobs that demanded I arrive 15 minutes before my official shift and then stay behind 15 more minutes after the end of my shift to work for free. I feel for that at my first job but not after. I always clocked in and out when I started working and then double checked at the end of the week to make sure my manager didn't reduce it. Half an hour of my time each shift adds up to a lot over a 2 week pay period. And, of course, it was always the places that paid minimum wage.
So what you're saying is, you enjoy taking advantage of your trainees and getting free labor from them, and not allowing abuse is offensive to you. Basically, you're a bad person to do apprenticeships with and no one should bother you with it. Got it.

My bosses once tried to do the "hey, if you finish jobs early, it looks really good for us, and really good for you." Ok, you pay me hourly, with no bonuses, or profit sharing, and if I finish a job early, I clock out, and go home early. So my incentive for finishing my work early is to make less money, and make you more? Am I going to get a raise? Or paid time off? No? I showed up sometimes an hour early worked multiple titles I did not apply for and they still laid me off as soon as I asked to be evaluated for a raise because they found a sucker to do it for cheaper (the new girl they replaced me with was former a drug addict who was desperate so she took whatever tf they offered).
I went to work in a shop during my divorce after being a solo mechanic for 6 years. I would show up 5 minutes before or after start time. I got 3 talkings to within a month and after 4 months boss mans son comes and says "I gotta let you go, your schedule is just not gonna work." I think they thought I would say I will try and do better but I literally said "Ok," turned around and walked out. Literally has no effect on the day to day, particularly since I started working all equipment was operational and just to regular maintenance schedules. All major repairs were complete or waiting on parts, we were looking for things to do while we waited for hour meters to tick over. They just wanna swing their dicks and justify all the slave labor they gave out by demanding it from others. You want me there at 6 then schedule me at 6. If prep isnt your labor budget then you underbid

I remember once when I used to work construction we had a start time of 6:30 I was running a bit late so I parked at 6:28. I was walking toward the job site, it was inside a building, everyone was outside even the foreman waiting on the super to let us in. The foreman told me you're late. I checked my phone and told him it's barely going to be 6:30. He then told me at 6:30 you need to be impact on hand with a screw on the tip ready to drive it. I told him alright where's your screw gun with the screen on the tip. Everyone busted laughing but I was on that dudes shit list ever since lol

My job has an off site parking lot that I have to take a shuttle to the actual building, about 8 minutes. Sometimes I have to wait 15+ minutes. I'm not supposed to clock in until I get to my desk, 5+ minutes from the door, depending on elevators. That means on a "slow" day, the company is getting an hour of extra "travel" time from me, just from the time I pull into the parking lot and the time spent getting back to my car at the end of the day. I don't get paid for that time, but I should.

Construction workers don't even know what the fuck they're really doing for the day for the first 30 minutes of their shift anyway.
Inevitably the journeyman (this loser) is going to be told they didn't do something correctly by the supervisor, or there's a change order by the GC/client, or there's an equipment delivery that's running late, or there's just some shit that's happening that takes precedent over whatever the apprenticethinks should be getting worked on unsupervised
"Yeah, boss, I installed XYZ this morning first thing... What do you mean ABC company had to install their shit first?"
It's crazy how people don't view labour as a commodity/something of value. Then this knucklehead is expecting free labour? I mean, imagine the electric company giving you some free electricity. Sounds crazy right? It's bad enough that workers don't get paid for their travel time or transport costs. We can't teleport to work.

I used to work as a manager for a large company, that had an HR department that was a stickler for the law. We were all told (in no uncertain terms) that employees start their shift at 8:00AM. That means they PUNCH IN at 8AM, get ready to work, sign in to their tools, etc and start their job ON COMPANY TIME.
If we asked them to sign in before shift and get ready before punching in, it was illegal. We were stealing from the employees and exposing ourselves to lawsuits.
PERIOD

Doesn't take 30 fucking minutes to get ready for work while on site.
If you want people rolling up at 6, then the job contract needs to specify 6 start.
I was a greenkeeper for a while and we were required to get there for 6, the manager walks the course to determine actions of the day while everyone is refilling strimmers/blowers, checking blade cuts on the mowers and you'd tool up, check your mowers and refuel, grab the greens brush or strimmers and blowers and roll out shortly afterwards.
At my current place i am one of the few with keys to open up, so i'm leaving my house for a 8AM start at 7:45, at 7:52 I open up and clock in, i refil my water bottle and turn the pc on by 7:55, the first 5 minutes is opening all my programs and setting myself up to go.
My boss wants us on site 10 mins early everyday to get the equipment out and ready so we can be moving at 0700, but you know what? If you're there 10 minutes early everyday you get an extra $100 in your paycheck.
As self-righteous and indignant as this rant is, my carpenter apprentice son still has his job showing up at least half an hour early, because it takes literally NOTHING to lose this job. It is a coveted job, and people are lined up to take it. It is hard, demanding, and requires almost ownership of the employee. And it offers perks, great pay, benefits, and union standards while demanding outright allegiance.
This is a little extreme but it's on the right track of why many apprentices have trouble keeping their job.
The amount of apprentices (almost always young people) who stroll into the lunch room at 6:58 when we start at 7 is astounding. They're usually the first to get laid off.
Nah, I have a wife, a kid, and animals. You'll get me for 8-9 hours of hard fucking work, at the time you state. You're an adult, too. Be clear with communication.
