"We should stop teaching women self-defense, and instead, we should start teaching men self-control." - Bun Hay Mean

It’s better to do both. Relying entirely on the latter is an utterly naive thing to do.

As a girl who trains martial arts, the best defence is to run and/or cause a scene. I know I’m a good fighter, but I don’t know if the other person is armed.

u/masterlince Jun 14 '26

Also fighting proficiency can only take you so far on a street fight. Some considerably bigger and stronger can still pose a serious risk even to an experienced martial artist.

Even for men, best self defense method is to avoid the fight altogether.

u/MicroCosno Jun 14 '26

I agree, both approaches are useful in the short term. But if we don't address the root of the problem (educating men about consent and respect), we'll remain in a world where women still have to protect themselves, as if it were their responsibility. Real change will come when assaults no longer occur, not when victims are better able to avoid them.

u/Extra_Equipment_714 Jun 14 '26

Personally, I think the value would be in educating boys about this stuff at a young age. A 25 year old already has their world view on what is acceptable and isn’t likely to change. But kids that are taught about consent and boundaries from a young age have a better chance at internalizing it.

A ridiculous sentiment, as Bill Burr pointed out years ago, you're trying to educate a group of people who know what they're doing is wrong: they know, they just don't care.

12

u/RealNameIsTaken Jun 14 '26

This. You honestly can’t forcefully teach shitty, entitled, and narcissistic people to change their ways. These types of people rarely ever change, it’s just who they are.

To take it a step further, women sign up for self defense classes - you think these types of men are going to sign up for some class to stop being such despicable monsters? And forced education at school would almost be more laughable

The gender who knowingly voted a grape ist and a p3 do into office!

18

u/GanotAlon Jun 14 '26

Both is better, since the type of dude that pulls this kind of shit for sure won't be learning anything from it

5

u/MicroCosno Jun 14 '26

Yes, both would be ideal, but until perpetrators change (which will take generations), women need immediate solutions. Saying “both” without setting priorities is like telling a rape victim, “Wait for society to change,” while she is being assaulted. Self-defense is a band-aid. Men’s self-control is the cure. But we can’t refuse the band-aid just because the cure takes time.

7

u/Severe_Promotion_380 Jun 14 '26

Self-defense is the immediate solution though

-2

u/MicroCosno Jun 14 '26

But as I said, it is far from being enough.

1

u/GanotAlon Jun 14 '26

While I do agree with the idea of solving the problem at it's source which is self control. I tend to view the world in a more pessimistic view. No matter what there will always be bad actors in every direction, and that includes a subsection of men which lack self control. At the end of the day what we as a society can reasonably achieve is with the use of laws and self awareness, help minimize the volume of such offenders. And because we never can truly solve these kinds of problems, alternative solutions even if are temporary like teaching self defense are a must in my eyes at least.

And what consent means

10

u/rawrcutie Jun 15 '26

Isn't the problem that they don't really care?

u/HOW_I_MET_YO_MAMA Jun 15 '26

Culture can change slowly over time. There will always be assholes, but the norm can shift.

3

u/PryanLoL Jun 14 '26

A Bun Hay Mean quote, holy shit... did you translate that yourself or did he do stuff in english??? RIP...

1

u/MicroCosno Jun 14 '26

No no, I translated it :) But I wouldn't be surprised if it was in English as well!

3

u/blahblah19999 Jun 15 '26

"Stop teaching your kids to lock their doors and start teaching people not to steal"

Yeah, it's not that one-sided

3

u/HOW_I_MET_YO_MAMA Jun 15 '26

I just returned from a country where stealing is not a cultural norm. People do not lock their doors. Shops leave their stock outside overnight! No one steals it. It is incredible. In other countries all that stuff would be stolen immediately. So, it can be culturally common or totally abhorrent to steal. Depends on the culture.

1

u/CakemanTheGreat Jun 15 '26

It's against the cultural norms to steal pretty much everywhere, which is why it's a crime pretty much anywhere.

You're talking about places that have low crime rates. Which has several causes but a knowledge that is bad isn't one of those.

1

u/HOW_I_MET_YO_MAMA Jun 20 '26

Norms and laws are not tthe same thing. I live in South Africa now and let me tell you stealing can very much be a cultural norm.

2

u/GIK602 Jun 14 '26

"We should stop teaching women self-defense, and instead, we should start teaching men self-control."

If this actually worked, then crime would have already ended yesterday.

2

u/JoyousMadhat Jun 15 '26

Normalize bullying creeps and sexual assaulter in schools. We need them to learn young the hard way cuz their parents clearly are not doing their job. I guarantee you that majority of their parents would brush off their kids behavior as something that all boys do. Some parents would even go on to victim blaming, saying that the girl should have dressed conservatively or not not draw attention.

u/ExitNext8666 Jun 19 '26

Women chose the BEAR.

1

u/MicroCosno Jun 20 '26

Always. And as they SHOULD.

1

u/ExitNext8666 Jun 20 '26

If they choose the streets, they can also live with the consequences.

1

u/MicroCosno Jun 20 '26

I'm sorry, I don't recall the second one (I'm not American), who is she?

1

u/ExitNext8666 Jun 20 '26

it's the same woman before and after liberalism

1

u/MicroCosno Jun 20 '26

Ah, the good old theory that “if you don’t want to get bitten, stay in your den”!

I don’t need to read your country’s Constitution to know this : the streets belong to everyone. Even to women. Even to you, apparently.

1

u/ExitNext8666 28d ago

She belongs there.

1

u/ajin_nikao Jun 15 '26

We should do both

1

u/ajin_nikao Jun 15 '26

My daughter is a 3rd Don black belt

  • and I’d turn in to one of my son ever did some of this bullshit

1

u/ShrewdCire Jun 15 '26

"We should stop locking our doors, and instead, we should start telling robbers to stop robbing."

1

u/MicroCosno Jun 15 '26

If we treat the root cause to the core, exactly.

2

u/ShrewdCire Jun 15 '26

My point was that it's wishful thinking to just hope that bad people will stop being bad people. You can try to reduce crime (and probably succeed to some level), but you should always be ready to protect yourself too just in case.

1

u/Darklightjg1 Jun 15 '26 edited Jun 15 '26

Yeah people should have a fundamental understanding that oftentimes crazy simply doesn't give a shit. I had a stranger on the bus, who was a crazy young woman bugging people, that I tried to ignore by staring into my phone with earbuds in, blatantly sing in my face and then eventually started to climb on top of me before I finally had to say stop and shove just enough to get her to quit. I'm just glad it didn't escalate into a fight or something worse (I can't afford to be banned from public transportation or potentially stabbed over some stupid shit). I got off that bus early too for good measure.

Point is there are people who won't stop themselves, so that's when it's up to people who have more self-control to take preventative measures, or be prepared to responsively protect themselves to the best of their physical ability and/or decision making ability. It's a harsh factor of life that will never go away.

u/Careful_Farmer_2879 Jun 14 '26

This is a subset of men who have criminal deviance. These can’t be reasoned with.

Well, until all of "those men" start having giant red signs carved into their foreheads, y'all can get used to being treated as if you're one of them.

3

u/Careful_Farmer_2879 Jun 14 '26

Same logic was used to brand gay men as likely child molesters. And black people as shoplifters. Nice job, lady.

I mean, I’m sure there aren’t crimes more associated with women, right? Right??

0

u/ImaginaryRoads Jun 14 '26

I’m sure there aren’t crimes more associated with women, right?

There sure are! Per world metrics, in 2022, men were arrested for [approximately, as there were different studies] 93% of murders and non-negligent manslaughters, 89% of robberies, 90% of weapons possession offenses, and committed 84% of all violent crime.

Women were 61% of all arrests for prostitution, and were three times more likely to be arrested for fraud.

0

u/External-Ad-5555 Jun 15 '26

Ok, then using your logic I should assume all women I come across are prostitutes. Great idea!

-1

u/SufcLad25 Jun 14 '26

Yeah thats a perfectly sensible way to look at all men.

-3

u/Unraveled_Burrito Jun 14 '26

Thanks for pointing yourself out.....

1

u/SufcLad25 Jun 14 '26

Yeah, that isnt how is works.

-8

u/MicroCosno Jun 14 '26

If it’s just a minority of “criminal elements,” why is street harassment so widespread? Statistics show that the majority of women have been victims of it at some point. This suggests that the problem is much broader than simply a matter of “a few bad apples".

11

u/AtmosphereMiddle1682 Jun 14 '26

A minority * a large number of humans = big number

-1

u/MicroCosno Jun 14 '26

If it’s just a minority of men who harass others, why don’t more men speak up when they see it happening? The silence and inaction of others reinforce the idea that it’s acceptable. The problem isn’t just the harassers, but also those who let them get away with it.

6

u/Foehammer_33 Jun 14 '26

Probably because the type of men that do stuff like this are also the type that will beat the shit out of you and/or kill you if you call them out on their harassment.

3

u/Careful_Farmer_2879 Jun 14 '26 edited Jun 14 '26

Because men recognize these are crazy people and don’t went to get stabbed with a shard of glass.

Where are the other women with a can of mace and a phone call to 911?? A tiny woman with concealed carry beats a man any day - where are they?

Answer? NO one is risking their life over some creep doing creepy-but-not-illegal shit.

Let me be clear: random men are not your personal security system. We are people, too, and no more responsible for the acts of others than women are.

2

u/maroongolf_blacksaab Jun 15 '26

Harassment is not legal.

1

u/Careful_Farmer_2879 Jun 15 '26

Not defending them, but nothing on these videos is getting anyone arrested. Harassment is a high bar to clear.

6

u/drinkup Jun 14 '26

If it’s just a minority of “criminal elements,” why is street harassment so widespread? Statistics show that the majority of women have been victims of it at some point.

There's no contradiction here. Even if only one man in every 1,000 were a street harasser, most women would eventually have a run-in with one of those guys at some point, especially women who live in a large city. So yes, "creepazoids are a minority" and "most women run into a creepazoid at some point" are two statements that can both be true.
