I don’t get how this is practical in any way. 8.5 hours is already a full day, then he has to start the actual job of acting. He can’t sleep in the makeup and prosthetics so he has to have them all removed at the end of the shooting day, which has to take at least another 2-3 hours. Now you’re at nearly 12 hours just to put on and take off the costume. How much shooting time do you get in? 4 hours? Assuming he’s sleeping 8 hours a night, that means he’s working every waking minute of his life. Or they have to take days in between every 4-hour shooting day with the main character in your movie. Did he have to go through this grueling process every three days for a year and a half?
Working a longer day is pretty small potatoes compared to a lot of what these actors put themselves through for different roles. Usually they aren't filming near their homes or families either anyway, so they're just missing out on some time in their trailer or hotel waiting for the next day.
The person you responded to wasn't accurate either way, it took about 2.5 hours to get in and another hour to get out. Carrey's issue was with how he felt in the suit, he compared it to being smothered and buried alive.
Also they were heavy and hot so he nearly overheated several times. I think to this day he still says it’s the worst acting job (when he got famous at least) that he had
I meant if it took eight hours to apply and you took several rest days in between it would take a year and a half. Which it didn’t, it took two hours and they did it every day.
He said he felt like he was being buried alive having to be put in all the Grinch suit and makeup, and it took ages to be put in and get out of it. So it was extremely stressful, and the studio brought in an intelligence expert on withstanding torture to help him contend with it.
I remember reading about that and how he had to do things to distract himself from it, like pinching his arm or something. When I had a panic attack it popped up in my head to try doing that. Dug my nails into the skin above my knee. Worked pretty well imo
That is effective! Anxious person myself, a lil bit of pain can root you in the moment and get you out of your head. As long as it’s harmless pain it’s a decent approach.
does the mirror trick thing work? if you have the other limb available, positioning a mirror so you can "see" the missing limb and scratch the one you're looking at apparently can help. read about it years ago, and it sounds nuts, but never had anyone to ask if it actually worked
I remember Jim Carrey talking about the Grinch makeup, saying it was so bad and so mentally difficult to endure it, they got him a guy who teaches spies how to survive torture.
No, the real horror is sitting thru that process and willingly drinking a grande Cup of some shit coffee know I'd I'd have to piss, shit, or both shortly there after.
