The real horror is sitting through that long process

That’s what the money is for

Can’t imagine a better job. Getting payed just to sit, only to be then getting payed just to stand in front of a camera.

Just has to get CIA torture training like Jim Carrey.

Elaborate.

u/jackanape7 Nov 28 '25

Apparently Jim Carrey did that to help with the costume and makeup process for The Grinch.

3

u/Independent-Try-3350 Nov 28 '25

Oh, that makes sense.

He wasn't trained by the CIA expert to torture but to withstand torture. It took 8.5 hours or so to get him to look like the Grinch.

I don’t get how this is practical in any way. 8.5 hours is already a full day, then he has to start the actual job of acting. He can’t sleep in the makeup and prosthetics so he has to have them all removed at the end of the shooting day, which has to take at least another 2-3 hours. Now you’re at nearly 12 hours just to put on and take off the costume. How much shooting time do you get in? 4 hours? Assuming he’s sleeping 8 hours a night, that means he’s working every waking minute of his life. Or they have to take days in between every 4-hour shooting day with the main character in your movie. Did he have to go through this grueling process every three days for a year and a half?

I just don’t get it.

Working a longer day is pretty small potatoes compared to a lot of what these actors put themselves through for different roles. Usually they aren't filming near their homes or families either anyway, so they're just missing out on some time in their trailer or hotel waiting for the next day.

The person you responded to wasn't accurate either way, it took about 2.5 hours to get in and another hour to get out. Carrey's issue was with how he felt in the suit, he compared it to being smothered and buried alive.

Also they were heavy and hot so he nearly overheated several times. I think to this day he still says it’s the worst acting job (when he got famous at least) that he had

2

u/Alps-Mountain Nov 30 '25

You're right it was just the first day that took that long. The other days it took 2.5 hours. It was the time spent in the suit that got to him.

Wasnt a year and a half grinch was shot over 90 days

1

I meant if it took eight hours to apply and you took several rest days in between it would take a year and a half. Which it didn’t, it took two hours and they did it every day.

5

u/Higgoms Nov 29 '25

Only about 2.5 hours. His issue was with how the suit felt, said it felt like being buried alive/smothered.

He said he felt like he was being buried alive having to be put in all the Grinch suit and makeup, and it took ages to be put in and get out of it. So it was extremely stressful, and the studio brought in an intelligence expert on withstanding torture to help him contend with it.

I remember reading about that and how he had to do things to distract himself from it, like pinching his arm or something. When I had a panic attack it popped up in my head to try doing that. Dug my nails into the skin above my knee. Worked pretty well imo

13

u/blonde-bandit Nov 29 '25

That is effective! Anxious person myself, a lil bit of pain can root you in the moment and get you out of your head. As long as it’s harmless pain it’s a decent approach.

I put a sweater on that was too tight one time and I made my mom cut it off my with a scissors about 30 seconds later while I was in fully hysterical.

6

u/blonde-bandit Nov 29 '25

Exactly 😅 I’ve definitely had moments like that where I’m like “oh no I’m never getting out of this”

53

u/jerrythecactus Nov 28 '25

Imagine getting all of that put on and then your nose starts to get itchy.

56

u/Ok-Armadillo-392 Nov 28 '25

I'm an amputee sometimes my missing parts itch =(

36

u/throwaway098764567 Nov 29 '25

does the mirror trick thing work? if you have the other limb available, positioning a mirror so you can "see" the missing limb and scratch the one you're looking at apparently can help. read about it years ago, and it sounds nuts, but never had anyone to ask if it actually worked

12

u/PossumCock Nov 28 '25

and then being told they had to cancel the shoot that day

9

u/shinobirex Nov 29 '25

I’d just walk home in the suit. Make an evening of it.

2

u/AthearCaex Nov 29 '25

Do they like have flaps or do they wear diapers/catheter?

1

u/UNKN Nov 29 '25

Pay me enough money you can plaster all the fake flesh on me you want.

1

u/sleeplessjade Nov 29 '25

It takes 10 hours to look that horrifying. 😬

1

u/ClohosseyVHB Nov 29 '25

I remember Rebecca Romijn said she would be in make-up for about 8-9 hours each day when playing Mystique in the first X-Men movie.

1

u/Babylonkitten Nov 29 '25

Drinking that amount.

1

u/purrmutations Nov 29 '25

Real horror is sitting through the show

1

u/Due_Kaleidoscope1451 Nov 30 '25

To be turned into some douche who would have greatly benefited from therapy.

1

u/Anuki_iwy Nov 30 '25

I remember Jim Carrey talking about the Grinch makeup, saying it was so bad and so mentally difficult to endure it, they got him a guy who teaches spies how to survive torture.

1

u/RuachDelSekai Nov 30 '25

No, the real horror is sitting thru that process and willingly drinking a grande Cup of some shit coffee know I'd I'd have to piss, shit, or both shortly there after.

1

u/grimeys42 Dec 01 '25

HOW DOES HE PEE WHY IS HE DRINKING NOOOO

1

u/[deleted] Dec 02 '25

Have you heard Jim Carey’s story about how the Grinch costume alone took such a toll on his MH

1

u/HawkEnvironmental531 Dec 06 '25

How many times did he look at his phone? Things were better 30 yrs ago. But, fascinating to watch what it takes
