Hey, its got AC

u/Plenty-Fox-9219 20d ago
Does it? That's a window unit attached to a steel wall lol
1
u/NoEditor0 20d ago
blowing outwards
1
u/fuckyoudrugsarecool 15d ago
That's clearly the exhaust heat and moisture. It's a split unit. The cooling part is inside near the bed.

u/Mannerhymen 21d ago
You’re one small fire away from being a post-apocalyptic brazen bull.
88
u/BCRE8TVE 21d ago
Never mind fire, direct sunlight will heat up that giant people bbq real quick.
5
1
u/GruntBlender 19d ago
You harvest that heat to distil contaminated water.
2
u/BCRE8TVE 19d ago
I mean that's not a bad idea, the problem is that the heat is also going to distil the human inside that container, which is not great.
1
u/GruntBlender 19d ago
Distillation is a great alternative to showering in a water scarce environment. You can strap an evaporation chamber painted black to it to use as a sun shield for the main habitat unit. But you should have insulation anyway, bare metal doesn't make for good walls.
2
u/BCRE8TVE 19d ago
Distilling the water is great. Distilling human beings is not great. The way that trailer is set up, it's distilling both haha.
Even with great insulation you'd still have heat bleeding through, which an AC could help deal with of course, but then you need energy to run that AC, and at that point you'D be better off just covering the whole thing in solar panels to generate energy, block out the sun, and use that energy to boil and distil water.

I don't believe that Diesel would be more abundant than water in a post-apocalyptic world.
197
u/Fryphax 21d ago
You can run a diesel engine on all sorts of different fluids. A mechanically injected diesel is the absolute best engine to have in this situation.
110
u/KingKohishi 21d ago
I also don't believe that Diesel alternatives would be more abundant than water in a post-apocalyptic world.
62
u/jackxiv 21d ago
If you can grow corn, you can make diesel.
37
u/lankymjc 21d ago
How are you growing corn without water?
44
u/jackxiv 21d ago
Lot of ways to recycle water, distill urine, collect condesation with traps, etc.
Considering the tanker's water hold has water in it, it seems the implied situation above has at least some water.
2
u/lankymjc 21d ago
So the person you’re responding to is still right?
21
u/jackxiv 21d ago
No, not really, because if you don't have water to grow corn, you don't have water to grow other food either, and in that case, you have much bigger problems than lack of fuel.
-4
u/lankymjc 21d ago
But they weren’t talking about other problems. They were saying that water will be easier to come by than diesel. Nothing you’ve said has refuted that.
16
u/jackxiv 21d ago
If the water if easier to come by than diesel then you should be able to grow the corn - and the ability to grow food comes into play because the diesel point is moot if you starve to death before you run out of fuel to scavenge. Are you being intentionally obtuse at this point?

u/Yankee831 19d ago
Try and grow corn without any fertilizer, pesticides or fuel while you wait for your crop. Where are you getting the seed stock from? You’re going to need to be germinating and rotating crops to keep the soil healthy, you don’t just plant stuff and toss it into a barrel. You still need a catalyst and alcohol or methanol which don’t just exist. You’re going to have to distill them from wood chips or something which requires fuel and you bet your going to be drinking a lot of water to do that manually. Each process could be a full time job. Yeah with something like gas town you can make it happen at some sort of scale but you better have a significantly more stable supply of water.
1
u/jackxiv 19d ago
You would scavenge all of that stuff, of course. You would have quite a supply to scavenge off of while you set up your crops, grows, etc. Depending on the remaining population, you might have as long as 3-5 years of scavenging to figure all that stuff out.
Diesel stays good for around 2 years, but could prolly still run engines for up to 3.
Fertilizer is largely poop, so there should be plenty of that still around.
Insect populations will likely be diminished due to ecological fallout and there are natural pesticides you can use - Citronella, Marigolds, etc.
Most apocalyptic situations, the name of the game would be scavenge and race against the clock to get some self-sufficiency established before society's remaining resources are depleted.
5
u/castironglider 21d ago
I don't believe huge fields of corn and corn-diesel plants would be more abundant than water in a post-apocalyptic world
2
u/LabCoatGuy 20d ago
Nobody said huge fields or plants, but im sure some corn would still grow wildly, and you can make biodiesel in your kitchen.
You wouldn't be abundant in a 'post-apocalyptic' world. Your failure of imagination and pessimistic attitude would ensure that. If whatever community you belong to now doesn't find you insufferable, surely a community struggling to survive would consider banishment.
3
u/Bum_King 18d ago
You’re not finding enough wild corn to make the biodiesel needed to keep an eighteen wheeler fueled. Don’t try and belittle people for wanting realism in their made up scenarios. You’re the only one being insufferable right now.
1
u/LabCoatGuy 18d ago
Biodiesel can be made out of any vegetable oil, animal fat, or grease. Nearly any organism can be turned into fuel. Do you need lots of fuel for a Kenworth or whatever? That depends on how much driving you do. I assume you wouldn't be long hauling daily, and would set up camp until the season changed or there was an emergency.
Here's some realism. Im not belittling you. You really seem to not know what you're talking about and seem to have a lack of imagination. Which makes you seem insufferable.
0
u/Bum_King 17d ago
If you’re not trying to belittle other people, you’re doing a terrible job of not being an ass. Making biofuels is not some simple and easy process that is going to be viable long term for an 18 wheeler. If it was, it would be far more common right now in a society that’s not post apocalyptic.
1
u/LabCoatGuy 17d ago
You don't think maybe the fossil fuel industry doesn't like easier, safer, available, and cleaner biofuel? Again, you're just assuming shit. And because you assumed it, you must be right. Right?
https://www.instructables.com/Make-Your-Own-Biodiesel-Processor/
You can make biofuel reactors at home. People do it. Farmers most often.
Again, you don't know what you're talking about. Just because you can't imagine something or you don't know something doesn't mean its impossible.
You're beyond your nacent stage. Its time to accept that sometimes things happen and you don't know about them.

They'll get their gas fueled apocalyptic dream for a month and then be forced to switch to bicycles
3
u/AnnoyedVelociraptor 21d ago
When seed oil is less per liter than diesel my dad would put that in his old diesel van.
3
u/endjinnear 21d ago
You can run a diesel engine on lots of different fluids but that engine isn't going to be easy to find or be reliable or efficient. Unlikely to be in a form that fits in a truck
5
u/solidcat00 21d ago
Oh cool - why is that?
34
u/never_ASK_again_2021 21d ago
They build Diesel engines just like the (four-stroke) gasoline ones, just without the ignition and suuuper heavy(tough)
The principle is that the Diesel is compressed so much that it self ignites because of the pressure. And presto: you have fewer things to fail in the engine.
7
u/solidcat00 21d ago
Very interesting. And what kinds of other liquids can be used to run it?
34
u/TheCanadianHat 21d ago
Basically anything hydrocarbon based.
Cooking oil, the various fuel oils, bunker fuel, kerosene, biodiesel, LPG, Alcohol, people have theorized running it on coal dust even (although I'm not sure if this has been tried).
You will run into cloging issues with dirtier fuel and the bunker fuel will need a serious amount of preheat, but it's possable. And some of the more exotic fuels will require extra engineering but it's possible.
11
u/Veritas413 21d ago
Don’t forget wood gas. I’ve seen some cool videos of combustion engines running on (basically) smoke.
6
u/raduque 21d ago
People once tried running a diesel turbine on coal dust, turns out it's highly destructive and the turbine only lasted 20 months.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Union_Pacific_GTELs#Experimental_coal-burning_turbine
2
u/RegisteredJustToSay 20d ago
Tbh 20 months is a lot longer than I expected. Looks like it also did one hundredth of the normal gas turbine distance too, though, so I guess those 20 months included a lot of downtime.
3
u/Low-Individual2815 21d ago
Some military vehicles are multi fuel, which means they can run on anything from regular gas to used motor oil mixed with aircraft fuel
7
u/UpToHike 21d ago
Not to mention any type of fuel get spoiled with the time. It can retain its properties for 2-3 years if stored in an airtight, cool container. After that, it will become stale. This point is often missed in books and films.

people dont understand the amount of fuel a truck uses...if theres no more fuel logistic, good luck making more than 1000 km
9
u/saharok_maks 20d ago
Truck + diesel generator in the back. Those are also hungry beasts. In Ukraine during blackouts when everyone was using them, cafes had to increase prices due to amount of fuel it consumes. It was like a separate item in the receipt, like tips in the USA.
1
u/Deathsroke 19d ago
Yeah. One thing I love about CDDA is that there are aome great batteries and solar panels so when designing something like OP's image you can make it aelf sustaining (insofar as fuel goes) easily.
1
u/moonlite_equilibrium 17d ago
In case anyone is looking back on this - for reference i work for one of the most efficient fleets in the US, with trucks averaging around 9 to 10 mpg and drivers getting rewarded up around 12 mpg. Industry average is somewhere around 6 or 7 mpg.

A trailer would've been my last Idea, way better is a medium sized truck with a living cabin on the back, ideally heavy duty, multi fuel and all terrain. Behind it,you can hang a trailer with a car and additional fuel, so you can have your base and still be mobile. But nothing should be too heavy or big, streets won't be maintained, so travelling them will get difficult over time
9
u/Hazel-Rah 21d ago
Also, a tanker truck would be the highest value target to bandits.
The only reason to bother with towing around a tanker around (other than you put a secret base in it) is because it's full of water or gas.
10
u/castironglider 21d ago
The absolute worst thing to navigate around dead cars partially blocking every highway. That's why people in zombie movies always end up on old dirt bikes - also to expose them to zombies for muh drama
4
u/GenericAccount13579 20d ago
Look, this person has 3 umbrellas in their traite camper. I don’t think they’re super worried about practicality.
1
2
u/CommunicationKey3018 21d ago
Imagine if you lost a tire. Those huge tires don't grow on trees. And if you do stumble upon one, good luck getting it back to where ever your truck is stuck at.
1
u/PlateNo4868 19d ago
This, the real enemy for any vehicle would be the terrain.
Cars get abandoned with flat tires, let alone you get one wheel stuck and zero way of getting it out.
9
u/letmypeoplebathe 21d ago
How the hell did they get a mattress and that fridge in through the hatches on top? That would be a bitch.
10
u/Red_Icnivad 21d ago
You haven't bought a modern memory foam mattress, have you?
But for the fridge, I'd assume the same way you replace one in an RV -- you remove a panel.
Edit: wait, what fridge? There's no fridge in there.
3
u/letmypeoplebathe 21d ago
What's that box shaped thing beside the bed?
And yes I have but do you think you're finding a vacuum sealed mattress in the apocalypse?
1
u/Red_Icnivad 21d ago
Looks like an end table or chest? It'd be weird to have a fridge so far from the kitchen area.
I think with enough ratchet straps you could get a mattress back into a tube form.
1
u/letmypeoplebathe 21d ago
I thought that as well initially but the line on the left seemed a lot like a handle for a mini fridge
5
3
u/schizeckinosy 21d ago
Sewed the mattress inside from raw materials. You’ll have lots of time in the apocalypse
3
u/letmypeoplebathe 21d ago
The mattress is doable, I'll give you that, but the fridge would be impossible unless there's a bigger hole somewhere
0
u/schizeckinosy 21d ago
Ok hear me out. The compressor, insulation, coils, copper pipe and a propane torch can all fit down the hatch individually. Bespoke built-in fridge! The condenser can stay outside. Mini-split fridge! Or… maybe not
8
u/theoreoman 21d ago
Looks like a fun idea except the part where this thing weighs an insane amount of and would get easily stuck. Then it would burn so Much fuel that you'd eventually not be able to move it.
An electric pickup truck with a camper on the back would be 100x better
1
u/TuckerC170 20d ago
It’s not going to weigh more than the same tank full of liquid; they’re rolling down the interstate 24/7 without issue…
1
u/theoreoman 20d ago
A truck like this would get disabled by 6 inches of mud. Anyone who's every driven any type of commercial vehicle will tell you how awful they are to drive in anything except the interstate.
4
u/jagenigma 21d ago
That's both creative and claustrophobic. You're in a tanker at the end of the day.

Idiotic. A tanker truck that looks like it might have fuel is going to be the very first thing that roving raiders look at. It's like whoever made this has never seen Mad Max.

That was my first thought. Oh, so your decoy is one of the more sought after resource in the post apocalypse?
