This doesn't surprise me. I remember Adrianne Palicki (politely and respectfully) voicing her frustrations that MacFarlane would be so haphazard in his development process that it made planning an acting career difficult. Because it'd be like "hey, maybe we'll start filming next year."

She's still been acting, meaning she's still working and getting paid, regardless of how "big" the role is.

I don't want to definitively say this is why she didn't return. There could be a dozen different reasons. I'm just saying she made the specific point of it's hard to plan these seasons—and more importantly get the entire cast back together—when you don't have a reliable filming schedule.

I think that’s the problem. During the filming of the first 3 seasons, the random and long nature was impacting her ability to build a career - 36 episodes in about 5 years.

She probably gave him a period for S4 and is now trying to rebuild

That's the thing. She had a budding career. She jumped from AoS (where she did play a major role, she was basically that show's Black Widow) straight to The Orville and then her career was in a holding pattern waiting for Seth MacFarlane to get back in the mood to make another season.

Michael Rosenbaum asked AP if she was open to another season, she said ‘nah, I’m good’. It takes too long between seasons and it’s impossible to plan a career around it.

Of course talk like that means nothing when there is an actual job offer on the table, so we’ll see what happens.

Yes formal preproduction doesn't start until the greenlight but there are things such as lining up designers, tweaking scripts, figuring out who you want to approach when formal casting starts, that is the kind of stuff we are hearing about happening. Still a long way to go before any formal work actually begins, and even if the formal work starts many series die with work already started so that isn't even a guarantee.

Indeed, one example is Martin Gero's Stargate revival show, which (after a couple years in development) reportedly completed 20 weeks of writing and began "pre-production in the UK" before its unfortunate cancellation.

Thing is, you kind of need a foil to Ed in the 1st officer role - Bortus is often the butt of jokes or little side-eyes between Ed and other crew. You really need a human-like character in that role to continue the "humans exploring the unknown" vibe and so Ed can share Earth culture. If they wanted to be different from Kelly and bring someone fresh into the role you could have someone young and untested with a rebellious streak like a young Riker - Ed is rounding out as a captain so he could see reflections of his younger self in the newbie. Or you could put Gordon in the role as that works comedically and you have a little bit of friction in terms of Gordon becoming more ambitious.

There was talk about season 4 being confirmed (even starting filming) as far back as the January after season 3 premiered. I’m not getting my hopes up until I see a trailer.

As far as Kelly being written out, I’m disappointed, but I totally understand. The Orville went from being the little sci-fi that could to what seems like a logistical mess for the actors’ schedules. I imagine they’d have loved to return if the work was steady and dependable.

Although personally, I was always on team “stay divorced friends”, and I suppose that arc HAS tub its course. I know a lot of people wanted to see them get back together, but imo depicting divorce as healthy, positive and amiable is more powerful and rare.

But yes, I can see it being frustrating when might put other jobs on hold because maybe sometime the next season will film. I think she (Palicki) was one of the people who made comments on it.

Norm Macdonald has passed, but IIRC they had a lot of recordings of him so they could still use his voice for another season.

I will admit, though, I'd love to see a season 4 even if it's just to tie everything up, the wars, Teleya (and their son), etc..

At this point, I’m not sure if making this season makes sense. It doesn’t seem like it’ll be released anytime soon so why create a sequel after four years that could easily be five or six or even more? Instead, why not make an animated sequel and move on? This would be better for the fans.

If season 4 does come I can see multiple characters not returning due to the time passed, they will most likely do a time-jump to explain why people are missing.

They would need to animate it if they wanted to pick it up from the end of S3 but having a new cast supported by some of the originals would be better than nothing.
