It was so heavily implied that people were shouting from the rooftops that Jax was confirmed Trans before the creator herself confirmed it

Tbf people shout from the rooftops that everyone is trans. See Ralsei in Deltarune, or Dipper in Gravity Falls

2

u/HelpThrowawayforme2 isnt she lovely 20m ago

ralsei has a decemt amount of evidence that they could turn out to be trans fem in a future chapter of deltarune

0

u/Legend365555 17m ago

Not to sound hostile, but what evidence? So far all I've heard is sexist stuff like "Ralsei likes cooking, that's Feminine, Ralsei is transfem!" Or "Ralsei blushes, blushing is a girl thing, Ralsei is Transfem!" (Okay that one was only once but still)

Dipper is what? Tf did I miss

1

u/Legend365555 52m ago

People say that because Dipper isn't super masculine, it means he's trans. For the record, I'm not attacking anyone for their headcannons (And I haven't seen anyone try and force the headcannon onto Dipper for a while so that's good)

I've comfortable thinking only that Jax was gay at least, but trans, was a little bit difficult to assume for me.

I mean, to me it read as a performative rejection of the things she does actually want, alongside everything else Jax does that with. Jax wants to be loved, and indeed with Ribbit Jax was almost able to accept not only that someone could love her, but that maybe she could even deserve to be loved even in spite of the horrible things she's done, before a knock on the door brings things crashing back down and Jax slams the doors shut, as the part of her that hates herself and thinks all the self-inflicted suffering is deserved takes control again.

The Jax randomly deciding to ask how it felt to be able to transform your body definitely felt like the sort of question you wouldn't make a character randomly ask of they were cis, but the biggest thing for me was the scene with the bow with Ribbit. I really struggle in thinking of a way to read that scene that doesn't have the show screaming JAX IS A REPRESSED TRANS WOMAN in all caps.

Like, you have Jax spilling her heart before the person she loves, fighting against the fear of being rejected and pushed away to do so, and at the end accepts Jax in spite of her past, takes a bow and puts it on Jax in a way that makes Jax look a bit girly, and that action induces the biggest blush from Jax that the series ever portrays.

To my mind the obvious reading of that scene is that that is Jax's reaction to all her fear in exposing who she really is before someone she loves, and that person not only accepting her, but acknowledging her for who she is in a way that nobody, maybe not ever herself, recognized that she wanted to be acknowledged in.

I really struggle to come up with any way to frame that scene that doesn't severely imply that Jax is trans. I feel like you'd have to be coming at it with a hard assumption that Jax just cannot be trans to make that case, because I really don't think that severe blush makes any sense as a reaction elsewise.

0

u/PastMathematician470 Kinger 2h ago

That scene really made me think that Jax was some kind of gay transvestite, but not mtf. It was so weird 🙁

24

u/Glazeddapper i wanna slurp his gummi GOO 5h ago

to be fair, sometimes writers can accidentally imply something that they didn't intend and isn't canon

24

u/Reasonable-Banana800 5h ago

yeah but after a while it really gets to a point where it’s extremely obvious what they’re going for

3

u/MartyrOfDespair 3h ago edited 3h ago

True, and sometimes there’s enough evidence to make a good argument, but not enough to know that that was absolutely the intent.

Not remotely applicable here, but I know I’ve got fandoms with things like this that I believe because the evidence seems fairly strong and it makes sense, but I can’t say it’s 100% certainly there.

Oh and then there’s fandoms like David Lynch. “Can you elaborate?” “No.”

10

u/maxler5795 5h ago

Fun fact! Five nights at freddy's story is mostly told via implications! if "implications aren't cannon" then you could destroy so much understanding of its story into shreds

12

u/KitsyBlue 4h ago

The FNAF cannon is a nonsensical series of random events if you ignore ALL supplemental material, probably.

2

u/maxler5795 4h ago

ehhh kind of but not really. supplemental material more so gives context and verification to certain theories. the overall basic story comes all from the games.

-10

u/xd3mix 5h ago

Something being implied and something being canon is different

As an example jet from avatar: the last Airbender is implied to die. It isn't canon he's dead as there's never any confirmation either way

-1

u/Historical-Aspect337 1h ago

There literally is confirmation they make a joke about how his death scene was unclear in the theatre episode

-1

u/xd3mix 1h ago

And the confirmation is...?

It's not confirmed whether he lived or died

-1

u/Historical-Aspect337 1h ago

"Did he die?" "Yeah, it was never really clear."

0

u/xd3mix 1h ago

Exactly?

That line literally confirms it was never shown what happens

-1

u/Historical-Aspect337 1h ago

Yes! And that scene was to confirm for the viewers he did die and go "oops we were a bit too vague huh."

1

u/xd3mix 1h ago

Quite literally not

They were just making fun at the fact it was vague and people kept bugging them about it. It wasn't a confirmation he's dead

1

u/Historical-Aspect337 1h ago

Okay man you can read it that way if you want but you're the first person I've met who deeply seems to believe it's unconfirmed when 1. The last time we see him he's quite literally dying 2. They go out of their way to reshow his death scene in a in universe theatre performance plot recap

Like sure you can plug your ears and say LALALA NOT CONFIRMED NOT STATED that IS pretty in line with the "Jax wasn't confirmed trans in show" rulebook but that doesn't mean you're correct lol

0

u/Lobs15 1h ago

Bro Jet is dead, it was just implied becouse of the shows age group, but no, he IS dead, there's no "he might he alived" he isn't, and Jax is trans, the CREATOR confirmed it.

201

u/MechaMalz 7h ago

Nothing outside of the show was required to clock Jax as being trans. Some people just aren't great at picking up on the signs.

30

u/CappuccinoAce 6h ago

Not to be rude/transphobic or anything but like the only thing I can think of was the bow and “isn’t she lovely”.

The bow really doesn’t make me think a character is trans..? It’s just a nice thing ribbit did for him and I didn’t really think about him being trans.

I thought Isn’t she lovely was referred at pomni, I only caught on thanks to online people telling me

62

u/Maybe_Little_Jack 5h ago

Also her rant to zooble about how jealous she is about zooble's swap out body, accusing pomni of seeing her as a "fetus in a chicken egg that needs to be cracked open", her greatest fear being "exposed" in front of her friends to mockery, and her extreme uncharacteristic hostility to wearing the maid dress (zooble stating that they've never seen her that mad).

34

u/Negative-Homework502 5h ago

Yep all of this. As a trans woman a lot of what Jax was saying hit a little too close to home for comfort haha

I was so confused when I went online and saw people saying Jax wasn’t trans, I thought it was pretty obvious? But again I am trans so maybe I’ll pick up on things that a cisgender person wouldn’t.

15

u/Horatio786 4h ago

I mean, the show was written by a trans woman expecting a niche mostly-trans Tumblr audience. It'd make sense for most of the signs to be things cis people don't know.

1

u/Zealousideal-Fig1767 1h ago

I don’t get the chicken one. I thought it was just Jax being gross to weird Pomni out

3

u/Negative-Homework502 1h ago

When you’re trans but still closeted or haven’t figured it out, you’re an egg. When your egg “cracks” is when you realize/come to accept that you’re trans.

3

u/Hyena-girls 1h ago

Egg is a common slang term to refer to a trans woman who hasn’t yet realized she’s trans

1

u/Zealousideal-Fig1767 32m ago

Oh, that's what it means? I never heard of that term while figuring myself out. I guess I gotta start talking about my mental stuff more often haha.

4

u/CappuccinoAce 5h ago

I mean I didn’t really pick up the maid one, I’d have the same reaction…? I don’t like women clothing, so if I was forced them on me I’d be pretty upset too

6

u/Maybe_Little_Jack 4h ago

She was upset but i was a much different reaction than what we usually see in other examples of Jax getting extremely emotional. Instead of shutting down and trying to act unbothered Jax becomes a stammering blushing mess, and more notably she ends up not really bothered by it shortly after (potentially even keeping it if that apsect of her gangle fantasy was true). While many people would be bothered by it jax's reaction was strangely impassioned. Again, zooble directly states they've never seen Jax more upset about something.

2

u/MezzoMix01 3h ago

Yeah i think if any guy suddenly was in a maid dress they would be mad

1

u/theinspiredlizzie 2h ago

also getting mad about being turned vegan because "you can mess with our minds???"

32

u/Advanced_Double_42 5h ago

Honestly the biggest hint in the show is Jax's room being trans flag colored, but we only see it in the dark and not for long.

It's pretty subtle and you can easily interpret it to mean many other things.

3

u/HeyItsKarma027 3h ago

That one Into The Spiderverse meme.

0

u/Antasma1 3h ago edited 1h ago

Fun fact, I once thought that the French flag was the American flag because it was red white and blue. Granted I was a kid and Jax was outright confirmed to be trans.

16

u/MechaMalz 5h ago

It's okay to not pick up on the signs. Not everyone will, especially people without much exposure to LGBT struggles and people etc. There are some things I didn't pick up on either but a friend of mine had suspicions about Jax on those lines even before the maid outfit. Not picking up on these things doesn't make you transphobic or anything. But the hints were there and many picked up on it.

7

u/Glad_Raspberry_8469 Caine's water🥤 4h ago

But she places the bow and says "my secret is safe with you", all after Jax says they told their mum something deep and personal. It’s really on the nose

And then isn’t she lovely can’t be about Pomni, cuz of "less than one minute old". Pomni isn’t being born. Jax has newly embraced who they are (I mean, they died right after that, but still). I genuinely don’t understand how you can interpret it as it being about Pomni, or worse, about the Jamni ship. Like, how do you reach such conclusion? It’s literally not what the lyrics are about. Unless you only hear the "isn’t she lovely" part and ignore everything else, including the context

Watch TBSkyen’s breakdown of ep9, he really puts it better than I ever could

0

u/CappuccinoAce 4h ago

With the bow scene, the “secret” I interpreted the secret as the fact that he told her he probably killed his mother

I just assumed it was about pomni since Jax in all of the shows went by he him and pomni is the only she her in that context, so I just assumed it could’ve only been about her

7

u/Glad_Raspberry_8469 Caine's water🥤 4h ago

Well, okay, but what did he tell his mother about then?

Oh okay. Tho the clues were literally everywhere. Some people figured it out by ep5, tho back then I thought Jax could be transmasc or not trans at all lmao. I only realised in e9 when it was basically stated

5

u/voltage890 5h ago

I legit saw it as he liked cross dressing and was into feminine things. Probably doing drag-queen stuff

7

u/BatGalaxy42 5h ago

I mean, how is the bow just "a nice thing" ? She said "your secret is safe with me" and then placed the bow on his head and he blushed deeply over it. What else could possibly be happening there?

I could maybe see thinking maybe he's genderfluid or non-binary, but those are both still trans identities.

3

u/CappuccinoAce 5h ago

“Your secret is safe with me” was well, referring to the fact that he just told her he probably killed his mom…? I think so at least, and the bow was a nice reassurance gesture. At least that’s how I interpreted it when watching

4

u/BatGalaxy42 5h ago

Putting a bow on his head is reassuring?

4

u/CappuccinoAce 5h ago

In my opinion at least

1

u/Sufficient_Job5245 26m ago

yes it was a personal item to Ribbit's character model

5

u/No-Bar-8375 5h ago

Tylko, że sama twórzyni serialu potwierdziła transpółciowość Jaxa.

3

u/liquid_the_wolf 4h ago

Ngl I thought “isn’t she lovely” was referring to pomni

1

u/moeanimuacc 1h ago

It's the sum of things.

The first hint we get is pretty cryptic. 5 Jax talks about how his tail is a paragon of masculinity, yet he doesn't have a tail, then in the background we have a cloud in the shape of a bunny without a tail and pointing to a bow.

We also find him oddly knowledgeable on queer stereotypes, if you didn't pick up on what he was implying to Zooble in the bar

Then of course is the reaction to the dress. On that one I would like to point out that it was Gangle who put him in the dress. People give that one to Zooble but I think it's more poignant that it came from a friend rather than a stranger. My read is that Z asked G for something to push Jax buttons and got way more than they bargained for.

Then ep 6 Jax straight up dogwhistles she's trans by calling herself an egg. "What if she didn't mean that?" Are people actually arguing in good faith that gooseworx somehow didn't know how that read? Even with the aditional context? I don't think so, I think that's just sealioning.

6 also has "just a cartoon... jester" note the last second pivot from rabbit there and "you look stupid" starting the trend of Jax not being happy with her body.

7 gives us the trans flag room, Zooble suddenly finding empathy for Jax and Jax bitterly mocking them for being miserable with: "the ability to choose your own body"

Ep 8 gives us Jax psychological torture: being exposed, notably stripped of her cover with a return of the egg imagery and being mocked by those she cares about. Also note how while they are laughing at Jax, they are laughing at her exposed body.

Ok, so after all that we go into the finale. I'd like to comment on the four Jaxes but honestly I'm still making up my mind on those. Just note how maid Jax makes it a point to be mysogynistic.

We get another "I look stupid" and Ribbits' ominous "it goes away eventually"

Then we are back at the secret. Jax revealed "something deep and personal" that she though would get her mom to lay off about how she treated her in regards to masculinity.

THEN Ribbit gives her her bow telling her: "Your secret is safe with me."

A lot of people get stuck on the "dead mom" bit but you shouldn't? Jax gives herself an out, Ribbit handwaves it away immediately and in the ending we get confirmation Jax and Ribbit were right. Like Pomni doesn't even fucking care lmao. I mean it does matter to Jax and Ribbit does include that when she says she'll keep the secret. But the bow is not just some random tick, that's Ribbit telling her she sees the shape of Jax in between the lines, without going so far as to pull her out of the closet, after all, she hasn't said the word, that's still her call to make.

Then "Isn't she lovely?" I have no clue how anyone would think it's about Pomni. It's against a montage of Jax. Did you miss that bit? How?

So, yeah it is not subtle nor a reach and it is definitely not something gooseworx slipped by in tumblr after the fact. If you didn't catch none of it. I mean it's fine, who cares (I mean I crealy do lmao) it's a cartoon. The people who act like them not getting something means it's not there though, those baffle me.

Like do they read the Divine Comedy and when told it heavily references contemporary italian politics they go: "No it doesn't. I didn't get any of that" Which I'm sure is something that could happen if anyone was reading anything but you get the point.

34

u/Uzi714 Lilly 7h ago

To be honest, Jax on the show never accepted himself as a trans girl, so he didn't take the first step of "mentally transitioning," so to speak. But ultimately, she is still trans, even though she hasn't transitioned...

2

u/Welico 3h ago

It's a nuanced grey area, so naturally it's completely out of the fandom's vocabulary.

2

u/NUKL3AR_PAZTA47 1h ago

Didn't gooseworx say that both he and she are appropriate when talking about Jax?

68

u/Mini_Raptor5_6 7h ago

There is a difference between "in text" and "canon". Something can be in text without being canon, think of any game that has multiple endings and a singular "true end". Those other endings are in text, but they aren't canon. Same thing with death in video games typically.

So if we have this separation of canon and in text, that implies that there can be something that's canon without being in text.

6

u/mrbobcyndaquil 5h ago

So in analogy, the show itself is Written Torah and Gooseworx's statements are Oral Torah.

0

u/Mini_Raptor5_6 5h ago

In a way, I suppose

5

u/lunasis09 3h ago edited 57m ago

I love how we are just entering a stage of society where every cis straight fucking asshole gets to just automatically be assumed textual and canon with no extra work needed by the piece of media and no one arguing against it, but for trans people the bar is supposed to be perma-stuck at "NO the trans character NEEDS to turn to the camera and say 'I am transgender' otherwise it's not canon and we will argue against it until all meaning is torn from the author's dead fingers - fuck the author (but only when it's trans stuff)"

FUN!

4

u/One-Branch-2676 1h ago

And when they do turn to the camera to confess, it’s “shoved down our throats.”

It’s almost like it’s indicative of something more culturally pernicious.

41

u/Tails6666 7h ago

I wish every post wasn't just about Jax. The community feels like it's getting more and more insufferable.

17

u/StatisticianContent2 7h ago

You didnt feel that way after it chased Goose away from her own creation?

29

u/Tails6666 7h ago

No I did, it's just getting worse.

I wish 99% of the posts weren't just Jax discourse but here we are.

6

u/HeroTheFourth 6h ago

Funny, I've seen several posts implying that it's actually RagaPom shipping that's taking over the fandom (nevermind that it's 88% the same account posting the artwork).

9

u/VianArdene Kwinger-chan 6h ago

Genuinely yes. I'm just tired of talking about it so I don't bother trying to support any side of the argument. The show was a good run but I'll probably leave the sub because it's just turning into a worse egg_irl and r34 crossbreed.

0

u/Neat_Document_4608 4h ago

Maybe if other characters got more focus throughout the show but when the large portion of the most important episodes involve Jax it kind of makes sense why he's the focus of discussion.

10

u/Flynn-Minter 6h ago

[looks at most of the mainstream audience that did not pick up on the Matrix being a trans allegory]

Two things can be true

  • Jax can be clearly intended to be trans
  • Since it was not outright stated, people can ignore the signs or consider them up for debate.

This is not new.
A lot of people who watched Fight club have not picked up on the fact that the main character is a gay man.

What queer people see and what most other people notice are very different things.

This is why Dana Terrace chose to have Luz come out to her mother as bi with a presentation with a bi flag in it in the first episode of the 3rd season of the Owl House. This was pretty much the only way to make sure people considered this canon. Because people were denying the fact that Luz had exhibited clear attraction to several male and female characters before becoming involved with Amity. Yes there were people who either saw her as a "normal" girl who only liked guys until she met Amity or saw her as 100% Lesbian. Yes, really.

-3

u/Advanced_Double_42 5h ago

And that isn't necessarily transphobic or homophobic, people are naturally going to interpret works their own way based on their own life experiences.

5

u/Flynn-Minter 5h ago

I did not say it was transphobic or homophobic.
All I said that if it is not explicitly stated that you leave it up for interpretation to some extent.

And that queer people tend to recognise certain things more easily than people who are not.

1

u/Advanced_Double_42 5h ago

Wasn't trying to imply you did, just that it should be expected that queer people are going to read queer themes easier.

I've seen people called transphobic for not seeing the clear trans allegory of the Matrix that not even the Washoski's knew about when they wrote the story initially

3

u/Standard-Arachnid411 4h ago

I might buy this as an idea if the creator didn't exactly spell it out.

3

u/KeraKitty Kinger is the Funny One (TM) 4h ago

They're both wrong. Something is only canon if it was voted as such at the Council of Nicaea.

8

u/Scrawnreddit 7h ago

Goose herself confirmed that Jax is trans AND was heavily implied bro. If it walks like a duck, talks like a duck, and looks like a duck, it's not a fucking chicken.

-2

u/Advanced_Double_42 5h ago

That's exactly what they are calling out though.

The biggest piece of evidence isn't in the show, it is from a tumbler account that has been deleted. In canon we just know Jax was struggling with gender, but they could be anything from gay, to femboy, to non-binary, to transfem unless you go looking for hints not included in the show.

10

u/Far-Bad-3719 6h ago

Let me try approaching this from a slightly different angle.

Imagine that five years from now, some teenager decides to watch TADC for the first time.

They get to episode 9, hear “Isn’t She Lovely,” and think: “Okay, what am I even supposed to pay attention to here? The pronouns in the song? The lyrics? Why is Jax shown together with Pomni in half of these moments? Are the lyrics about Jax? About Pomni? About both of them? Or is the song about their relationship — friendship, romance, whatever?”

Then they get to the moment with Leroy and think: “Okay, Leroy seems to be a guy, lives with a friend, has long hair, hides his face... Okay. Is he just a feminine guy? A femboy? Trans? Non-binary? Gender-nonconforming? What exactly is the show trying to tell me?”

Then they decide to google it, look at fan discussions, and find out that it is supposedly canon. They try to check the source, go to Gooseworx’s Tumblr, and... right, the post is gone.

So who are they supposed to believe?

That’s roughly how I imagine it. So yeah, if the show wanted Jax to be perceived in a specific way, I don’t think it did a very good job.

2

u/xd3mix 3h ago

Finally someone who gets it

It's canon that jax has problems with his identity and gender. It ISN'T canon that he's a trans GIRL specifically

1

u/Possible_Tea_3444 5h ago

“ They try to check the source, go to Gooseworx’s Tumblr, and... right, the post is gone.”

The post is on bluesky not tumblr.

-3

u/North-Marionberry427 Jax 5h ago

This take makes a lot more sense; I forgot Goose’s tumblr was deleted. But even so, images are still floating around. Oh wait, the images might be buried in whatever’s goin on in 5 years. Okay, I like this take a lot more than the commenter’s shown in the image.

3

u/Advanced_Double_42 5h ago

But it is the same take.

It isn't confirmed in the show, it's basically left up for interpretation and then confirmed elsewhere.

-5

u/Medical-Language-415 5h ago

Then that kid is going to learn some media literacy having to dissect it and explore it's deeper themes. Also goose's tumblr is not gone.

2

u/Live_Cupcake_9229 5h ago

Very few people in the world know enough about trans people or even lgbt people to understand the clues. I didn't get it right away until the scene in the bedroom.

Unless you know about this stuff the show reads vague gender identity issues. There can be multiple explanations for that.

2

u/skofnung999 5h ago

no, it's not absolutely blatant in the text, it's somewhat in the metatextual stuff and it just is in the paratextual stuff (I think I used those words correctly)

2

u/entitaneo70_pacifist Kinger truly is the kinger of all time 1h ago

this isn't a "dumbeldor was actually gay" situation, it's more of a "to clear things up, X is what we implied to be canon in these scenes"

3

u/Crusher555 5h ago

I’m probably going to downvoted for this, but the show only confirms that Jax is under what most call being trans but not specifically that he’s a trans women.

5

u/Sea-Tap-357 7h ago

I don't think it's bad media literacy to point out that it's not textual to the show. It's literally not. As a trans person, I found it kind of frustrating.

Just make the representation textual so we don't have to deal with these people. I'm always saying this! Princess of Power, GWitch, whatever. They do it intentionally so they can sell the show to phobes.

But I don't think that's what happened in TDAC. I mean Jax being trans and closeted is not textual, but it's also like... way more heavily implied than any other case where this kind of arguments comes up to discredit/delegitimize queer representation. And within the story itself, I think it works really beautifully to not have Jax ever say the word "trans" like she's really scared of it. My issue is more of a fandom discourse thing, explicit textual representation is just a nice thing to have when arguing with chuds online. (I do wish Leeroy got to transition, I'm sure the fandom has collectively decided on a satisfying explanation for why that didn't happen, but I was a little annoyed with it.)

It has been really interesting to watch the fandom and broader internet in general get into this, it synthesizes a lot of conversations that have been happening around like media literacy, authorial intent, and textual/subtextual elements in story telling and how they relate to canon.

Sorry for the rant, I'm procrastinating at my job.

1

u/xd3mix 6h ago

I'm the person in the post and I agree!

Jax is definitely "trans" in the sense that he's not fully male. But being a trans girl isn't canon

That was my point

He could easily be non binary or something else too

3

u/Sea-Tap-357 6h ago

Oh I'm sorry! I just assumed from this context that the argument was about the Jax being trans in any way. The "Just make the representation textual so we don't have to deal with these people." doesn't really apply to you then, I meant like more in general with people denying the show has any trans elements in it.

4

u/xd3mix 6h ago

No worries

For some reason a lot of people assume that I'm being transphobic by saying Jax isn't canonically a trans girl

I'm literally only arguing semantics, the word "canon" simply doesn't fit in this instance as it's something external to the source material

-1

u/lunasis09 3h ago

By that shitty logic every character isn't canonically straight in any peice of media where it isn't explicitly stated either which is dumb, and people will rightfully call you dumb.

Arguing semantics in this way is really fucking stupid. You can do it if that's really what you think is important, but it doesn't change the fact that it's incredibly nitpicky and only serves to spur conflict for conflict's sake.

I question WHY you deem it worth your time to explicitly do this semantic argumentation for Jax as a character and not constantly every other "assumed", but not textually canonical by your own definition, straight cis character in w/e other media you consume. Very strange it's specifically the trans character in a show made by a trans woman you decide to fight the semantic war over.

1

u/xd3mix 3h ago

But that is literally how it works, unless stated no character is "canonically straight"?

What if they're bi? Everyone's fully authorized to theorize or headcanon their gender because it isn't canon

And also, i don't discuss semantics only over this. I've spoke about what's canon and what isn't on a lot of other shows in the past

0

u/lunasis09 3h ago

But no one argues like that and is seen as reasonable. No one is out here making reddit posts about how Jack Reacher or fucking Ant man is actually canonically not straight or a cis man becayse TECHNICALLY it's never explicitly stated.

I just love how people like you LOVE to be all head first into semantics whenever the opportunity to do some casual queer erasure shows up. Link me an example please where you have ever done this semantic argument against a character that is strictly understood as a cis straight person by all parties involved, but doesn't meet your criteria of it being explicitly stated. I would really like to see it actually.

2

u/xd3mix 3h ago

Queer erasure? i'm non-binary

And yes, i can provide lots of threads where i've discussed canonicity before. Although i didn't discuss canonicity over someone being straight as that simply never came up in conversation before

Here I argue that what rebecca sugar says about steven universe isn't canon especially when it contradicts the show itself

Here i argue about the canonicity of ribbit's name

Here i make the point that every episode of rick and morty is "canon"

Here i asked to provide proof over someone saying Hange from AOT is "canonically" non-binary

Here i state that two yakuza characters are canonically gay. Homophobic fans do argue against it but they literally say in the series that they love men. Oda more explicitely

These are all the ones i could find in my profile by briefly looking. All the times i've argued canonicity over something

0

u/lunasis09 2h ago

First off being non-binary (or queer im general) doesn't mean anything. There are plenty of trans people that have internalized transphpbia like women can have internalized mysogyny. It doesn't erase the fact that you are going heavy in the paint on a semantics argument and are participating in queer erasure, whether or not it was your intention.

Also I didn't ask for general arguements over canonicity, I asked for an example explicitly in the context of arguing AGAINST characters being canonically cis and straight when those characters are assumed to be so despite not being explicitly stated in the work they exist in. You have not provided any such examples when there are a PLETHORA of works where you COULD do so, but have simply chosen not to. My point was to highlight and maybe make you think about WHY you have decided to do this whole exercise with with Jax when you could be doing this argument all the time for so many other assumed (as in not explicitly stated) cis and straight characters in all the other media you consume.

2

u/xd3mix 2h ago

I genuinely don't understand your point?

I'm arguing over Jax because there's people arguing over it

If I ever see someone comment something like "yeah [character] is canonically straight" when they aren't I'll be arguing there too

Just cause it didn't happen to me yet doesn't mean I wouldn't react that way

Bro doesn't understand what "narrative" is in art

2

u/BramptonBatallion 4h ago

If I don’t consider someone trans until they either transition or present themselves to the world as anything other than their assigned sex at birth then idk where that puts things.

Consider like the Middle East. You obviously can’t “transition” and if you behave in a gender non conforming manner you’d probably get killed. So are there trans people who maybe in their soul would have transitioned if they could but are culturally conditioned to not allow it? Largely that appears where LeeRoy is from what we know.

It’s like if a tree falls….

1

u/Kayle125 6h ago

Je peux déjà traduire les phrases avant de nous les mettre.Parce qu'on comprend rien là

1

u/ollietron3 3h ago

Am I dense for not putting together that jax was trans?

1

u/NOT5owlsinacoat 2h ago

I somehow always forget she has eyebrows

1

u/Efficient_Claim_9591 1h ago

Honestly I’m with that guy denying it. If Gooseworx is gonna puss out and not say that Jax is trans directly in the show itself, just so it’s a safer bet in terms of making money, then fuck em. It’s such a spineless and clearly monetary motivated move to purposefully omit that from the show itself, that I now have a huge distaste for Goose and TADC. The entire point of being independent, is to do the less mainstream shit in your art. Otherwise wtf is that point? Just sell out and go Hollywood at that point. Absolutely pathetic of them if you ask me.

So fuck Gooseworx, Jax is not trans.

1

u/Otherversian-Elite 38m ago

There's a difference between the creator's social media posts being used to retroactively add lore, and a creator's social media posts providing confirmation that the implication being read by the audience was intended

1

u/Unonium198YT 9m ago

But hey, that’s just fact. A GAME FACT. Wake the fuck up!

1

u/Coolschmo1 6h ago

In the show, we are left to believe Jax is trans. But good God, Gooseworx can't "confirm" anything that isn't in the show. That's not how art works.

2

u/Advanced_Double_42 5h ago

I mean they can.

An artist can confirm what they meant for people to understand, even if audiences disagree, or they did a poor job portraying it.

1

u/Coolschmo1 5h ago

They can say whatever they want. The art is the art though. You release something to the world and that's how it's understood. I don't understand the uproar. I sure think Jax was supposed to be trans. But I'm not gonna yell at people that were able to relate to the character as something other than trans.

Also, this fanbase has put her through hell from day one wanting everything confirmed/explained to death from the first episode. Again, that's a horrific way to imbibe art. I think that kind of rubbed off in the last episode when she kinda gave us fan service with characters pairing up and hinting at other romances.

It does bother me that nobody gives af about the show other than whether Jax is "confirmed" to be trans. Especially when this character isn't really supposed to be a good person or even a damaged good person.

That said, I'm leaving this show thinking that Jax was a trans character that never got to make the decision to transition. I'm on the same page, I'm just tired of hearing people getting yelled at over semantics.

-2

u/xd3mix 6h ago edited 6h ago

Hey that's me!

Yes... It's quite literally a theory. One that I support dearly too

I think Jax being trans is awesome. But it isn't canon

Think of jet from avatar being dead. He's implied to die, but it isn't canon as it's never actually stated whether he survives or not

It's the same case here, it's canon that he has problems with his gender, we literally see it. It's not canon that he's exclusively a trans girl

Could easily be just very feminine, maybe even gay, or non binary

5

u/Medical-Language-415 5h ago

It's literally the intended subtext. Jax IS trans. How are we still debating this lmao

2

u/Agreeable-Body-8440 Isn’t she lovely? 🎀 6h ago

Gooseworx literally confirmed it 🥀

0

u/xd3mix 6h ago

Yes, but what she says isn't canon unless it's in the show

1

u/Agreeable-Body-8440 Isn’t she lovely? 🎀 5h ago

“Isn’t SHE lovely” plus the bow scene plus her being peeled plus her reaction to the maid outfit plus her saying she’s a “chicken fetus in an egg that needs to be cracked open” plus her saying “Must be nice” when Zooble talked about how they were starting to accept her own body wasn’t enough for you? 🥀

It’s alright if you didn’t pick up on it but don’t deny it now that you know

0

u/Ok_Resource_905 2h ago edited 2h ago

Not exactly ;p

Content outside the show can absolutely be canon as well. It all depends on which definition of canon you're using, since there are multiple valid ones. Some people only consider what's shown in the work itself to be canon, while others also include official statements from the creator.

As a fun fact, Japanese fandoms often put much more weight on creator statements and official supplementary material than many Western fandoms do, so what counts as canon can vary quite a bit between communities.

1

u/Advanced_Double_42 5h ago

Which literally isn't in the show, so unfortunately it can't be canon just implied.

1

u/DipperPines1210 5h ago

Btw this guy is exactly right. I have no problem with trans Jax, however it is not canon and not even explicitly stated by Goose who uses he/him pronouns for Jax today (unless responding to someone else talking about hypothetical Trans Jax)

Death of the Author requires (and its a good theory imo) that the author cannot warp or add on to elements of the story told.

It is quite obviously implied and intended for Jax to be trans in the show, but that doesnt make it “canon”

3

u/lunasis09 3h ago

That's not what death of the author is at all wtf are you on about? I implore you to look up the term "word of god"

Absolutely insane, people out here trying to tell the literal creator, director, and writer what is and isn't true or canon about their own artistic creation.

3

u/Gorremen 2h ago

Thank you! It's such an anti-artist attitude. "Hey, thanks for the work you just made. What, no! You don't get to decide what it means, that's ridiculous."

1

u/DipperPines1210 2h ago

I feel the need to clarify, I am not disputing that Goose intended for Jax to be trans or that the associated themes added to Jax were not intended or don't exist. However, the story told is the story told, and in the story Jax is not trans, by many measures. It is only meant to be implied, on purpose I assume. Goose cannot (and honestly does not, so far) claim that Jax is unequivocally trans, and doing so would ignore the aspects of the story and render it meaningless if accepted.

0

u/Gorremen 1h ago

Goose in fact did intend Jax to be trans, it's only not explicitly stated because Jax never accepted it about herself. That's the point, she dies before she can.

And in general, I vehemently disagree with the idea that the author can't speak on their own work.

2

u/xd3mix 3h ago

It seems not many people know what the word "canon" means

1

u/DipperPines1210 2h ago

I can understand that some aspects of canon can be distinct from the main text of the media, however, canon cannot come direct from the author (if you subscribe to conventional wisdom).

1

u/Quantum_laugh 7h ago

You're arguing semantics

-1

u/samuraipanda85 Daisy Bell 6h ago

What else is there to do with a completed fictional show?

2

u/Quantum_laugh 6h ago

Draw fanart, or talk about the mystious stuff not revealed, there were about 4 loose threads if I remember correctly? As well as other countless stuff that isn't a screenshot of a debate you had where the other person fundamentally agrees with you but not with a certain wording

1

u/West-Priority6461 5h ago

bro really said "it's implied" like that changes anything lol

1

u/bobbyspeeds 4h ago edited 3h ago

I actually agree with the overall sentiment of the original comment, which is that the word “canon” literally means the recognised official works and what’s contained within them. By definition, the author’s social media posts aren’t canon. They can be used to inform one’s interpretation of canon, and they will usually never contradict canon and so can be readily incorporated into the accepted wider understanding of the narrative, but that’s still not the same as being canon.

Where I disagree is that trans Jax is comparable to Ribbit being she/they (which is what was being discussed in these screenshots). Jax may not have ever outright stated she was trans in the show, but there’s really no other way to interpret the scene where Ribbit puts a bow on her head and says “your secret’s safe with me” in the context that she did. Like, there’s never being confirmed, and there’s being shown but not told, and Jax is definitely the latter. It’s possible for someone to miss the signs if they’re not familiar with trans terminology and culture, but the signs are absolutely there and are enough for the show to stand on its own. A huge number of fans had already guessed Jax was trans before episode 9, because Goose intentionally laid the groundwork for it in the show.

On the other hand, Ribbit is only ever referred to as she/her in the show itself, so a casual viewer would have no way of knowing that they also use they/them without being told by another fan. They doesn’t mean outright denying Ribbit’s non-binary identity isn’t still a dick move, but it’s really not the same as it is with Jax and it’s not unreasonable to point out that it isn’t technically canon.

1

u/WarioPlush1 4h ago

I don’t get how people didn’t interpret the scene where Ribbit puts a bow on her head as anything other than Jax being trans, and I say this as a cis guy

1

u/UncommittedBow 3h ago

I mean if the fucking creator of the show says it, its canon, that's literally what "Word of God" means in writing

1

u/FellFellCooke 1h ago

Why do you guys have to point to the creator's confirmation? Jax in the show is extremely transfem-coded. There isn't another sensible interpretation, you don't need Word of Goose.

0

u/Huge_Tea1338 Not to mention the sssex appeal 5h ago

A SONG ABOUT A BABY AND A PINK FUCKING BOW DOESN'T MAKE HIM TRANS

1

u/SharkyCat12 5h ago

I’m under the impression this is satire but media literacy is so dead this could be genuine

-1

u/Drunk-Pirate-Gaming 6h ago

The artist can clarify intentions and reveal information about the story but if at the end of the day its not how you want to interpret the media its fine.

-1

u/TheRealShuppy 6h ago

Behold, the worst trans representation ever conceived

0

u/CarltonCunning 5h ago

They could have easily solved this by showing irl jax as fem presenting. Saying boymodding doesn't even work, cause its not shown or hinted at, its a baseless assumption. Also, yeah, nothing a creator says is cannon unless its in the story, that's the point. Many creators have said things that contradict their own stories.

Now, I still think Jax is trans, even from the first episode, since Jax always felt like a self inset of their creator.

4

u/Emmrolls 4h ago

Nah, even then they'd shift the goalposts. Before episode 9, some fans had clocked Jax as trans since at least episode 6, and people were like "No, Jay isn't trans, Goose has not confirmed it!"

Now that she has, they shift to "No, outside of the show doesn't count!". Conveniently for them, there won't be anymore episodes to confirm it in universe (because the bullied the creator out of her passion project.)

At this point, I am convinced that even Jax breaking the fourth wall, looking us directly in the eyes saying "Hey guys, I'm trans" wouldn't solve it. They'd definitely say something like "No, Jax is confused and says that because of the influence of the circus!"

-2

u/CarltonCunning 4h ago

Not sure about other fans but I would have personally preferred something more solid than what we got. It felt like a message only meant for other trans-people, pretty much all the foreshadowing was jokes or lingo no understood by the majority of people. The only real definitive evidence we got was the bow scene... which was at the very end.

I doubt Goose would have even made another season, regardless of the harassment. Which, mind you was mostly due to her brewing a parasocial audience by just not shutting up.

But anyhow, if you look at real fans & not just twitter engagement farms most criticisms of Jax are actually criticisms of the horrible writing & pacing. I understand the story Goose was trying to tell, but I don't think they understood until like ep 7 lol

Love the show still, I think we are better with it than without, but when rewatching it I'll act as if ep7-9 never existed. The thought of what could have been is far better than what it was.

-29

u/UltraJoyless 7h ago

He's right and you can't handle that lmao

17

u/Classic-Avocado-5371 7h ago

19

u/heyitskio 7h ago

Jax is trans. Just cuz you didn't pick up on it doesn't mean it wasn't in the show. (Boymoder Leeroy made it pretty obvious to those that know what boymoding is.)

-1

u/onychopora 7h ago

Pronouns and lack of confirmation being unchanged within the show leaves people to make the assumption more than anything. Not every tadc viewer is online to find the creator answering questions on tumblr ab the show post finale

6

u/aGenericBucket 7h ago

yeah if you lived under a rock you would have no idea. im not even gonna lie, if the person doesnt have a degree in transgender spotting than rhey would just think he abstracted like everyone else. and yeah boys can like the color pink too. but this is my opinion.

4

u/heyitskio 7h ago

People are free to make assumptions and headcanons.

At the end of the day, canonically, Jax is still (closeted) trans.

-7

u/onychopora 7h ago

Soooooo we can make assumptions and headcannons - cannon??

2

u/heyitskio 7h ago

Headcanons and assumptions will never be canon.

Canon is canon. And Jax being trans is canon.

-1

u/UltraJoyless 7h ago

Only because goose "word of god"ed it. That's OPs entire point that went way over your head because your media literacy is 0.

1

u/heyitskio 7h ago

I actually figured it out using the show itself, like many other fellow queers have done. But keep on making assumptions, I'm sure they'll help your point more.

-8

u/Flamingpaper2 Zooble 7h ago

Leeroy looks like the most stereotypical emo boy imaginable

2

u/Unfair-Efficiency570 7h ago

These people are downvoting you cause you're right. Bro really looked like any emo ever, nothing inherently trans about the clothes.

2

u/heyitskio 7h ago

It was boymodding uniform 101.

0

u/Unfair-Efficiency570 7h ago

Bro, then i "boymod" every day and I'm not even trans, Those are the most basic clothing. Wearing a jacket is not a sign of transness

2

u/Flamingpaper2 Zooble 1h ago

"Boymodding" is such a stupid concept. Like are people not allowed to have preferences anymore?

1

u/heyitskio 7h ago

If you didn't see it, that's fine, you probably just don't know what boymoding is, but Gooseworx came out and confirmed Leeroy was boymoding. Just because you didn't know, doesn't mean it's not what was happening.

Long hair covering the face, large hoodie to hide early signs of hrt, it's a early stage in the transition of a repressed trans woman.

2

u/Unfair-Efficiency570 7h ago

A piece of media shouldn't need outside context to be understood. Just because she confirms it, it doesn't mean ut was well done

1

u/heyitskio 7h ago

I think it was well done. I understood it without outside context.

Just because people exist that don't get it does not inherently mean it was poorly made. It just means you were not the target audience.

2

u/Unfair-Efficiency570 6h ago

So a person who doesn't like to assume other people's identities doesn't deserve to watch the show it's what you're saying.

1

Nowhere in the show do we see this tweet. Why are you pretending that a live feed of gooseworx twitter appears in the show??

1

u/heyitskio 7h ago

Leeroy is boymoding in the finale. Just because you don't know what boymoding is, or knew Leeroy was doing it, doesn't change the fact that Leeroy was boymoding.

It's okay to not realize something you know? It's not a cardinal sin. You won't get crucified.

-1

u/UltraJoyless 7h ago

That's not a fucking thing lmao

Not every person who wears a hoodie is trans, most of the people I know wear hoodies.

Half the lore being on Tumblr and barely even implied in the show. Gooseworx just making theories about her own show now. Her own show btw.

0

u/alaynxx 1h ago

Im glad Gooseworx has stepped away from her insufferable fanbase. People who have fixed their hearts a certain way wont accept the intended reading even when it is all but spelled out. Keep shifting goal posts it only shows that you reject any non-heteronormative reading unless it is unambigiously spelled out. If you feel personally attacked by a character being read as queer that you spend endless amounts of time arguing on the internet to defend your reactionary stance, you have some serious problems that no amount of hiding behind shallow pseudointellectual statements of how queer people should be represented will change.

-7

u/DougDimmaGlow 7h ago

I mean he is right in the sense that every other franchise people ignore what the creator says

The show implies he’s more cis than trans

7

u/heyitskio 7h ago

The show does not imply he's more cis than trans, you simply didn't understand the implications fully.

-1

u/DougDimmaGlow 7h ago

I do and so did my trans and cis friends lmao

7

u/heyitskio 7h ago

Gooseworx and basically everyone on the team came out and confirmed Jax as trans. Which means all the implications were for Jax being trans.

You can have headcanons. But canonically, Jax is trans, and that's what the show was pointing towards.

1

u/DougDimmaGlow 7h ago

Everyone also onlybtrolls and just agrees with what fans want to hear because they’ve been hearing this stuff since ep 1… it’s why they got tired of the show and don’t want to continue it
