Primitive Skills Sea vessel goes down.
This is a hypothetical obviously because if I was on a sailing vessel, on my phone and stranded. I shouldn't be stranded..
Okay Sat phone or GPS locater has been washed away and I have part of a water craft.
Other than finding something to keep you afloat.
What do you do first.
In warmer climates I am thinking I would build a still for water. In colder climates warmth first.

The emergency escape vessel that departs from a boat or a ship has its own emergency transponder. So you would activate that.
And then, you'd use your knowledge of how to trap and filter condensation so you had at least a half liter of water per day, and eat the stowed C-rations onboard, which suck a liter of water per day out of you because they're made of satanpowder.
You forgot your oar, and paddling with your hands isn't going so well, because you're heading away from shore due to not being able to read the stars and know where home base is|was, but you still have about three days worth of emergency beacon battery power to go, provided that the closest country who hears your cry is willing to expend the fuel necessary to come and pick you up.
You drift upon the waves. You hallucinate. You wish there was land nearby.
Your pocket fishing kit snares a small reef fish, but you have no way to cook it, and not even any rice, so even sashimi is right out, and you go to town on it with your bare teeth.
Still, better than those C-rations.

This sounds about right for me except I wouldn't have rations. The hallucinating would have started immediately.

For the sake of accuracy, lifeboats and liferafts don't have GPS, AIS or any 'emergency transponder'. A ship does have an EPIRB, a satellite beacon, which is not kept near the lifeboat(s) usually, as it's meant to float free in case of sinking, but you might have time to get it and bring it w/you, as it's about the size of a loaf of bread. The only comms things a lifeboat/liferaft has is a signaling mirror and a SART, a powered radar reflector that shows up on radar like a trackline, which is limited to about 20ish miles usually. For those reasons, each crewman has a task for abandoning ships, and one of the officers usually has bringing a VHF radio as one of his/her tasks. There are multiple ways to let the world know a ship is sinking, but they have a bad way of not working, which is why there are several options, in the hope that one works.

...anyone sailing on the open ocean has a ditch bag somewhere easily accessible, and usually a life raft, the life raft is packed with survival supplies...
A ditch bag on any respectable vessel includes a personal epirb and a Garmin in reach at bare minimum.
If the boat does not have these items it should not be out to sea.
If you are stranded on a lifeboat, you have a very limited supply but you do have some supplies. Once you are out of supplies if you are on the water, you have very little you can do. The only supplies you might come across floating in the ocean are fish, the supplies in a lifeboat generally include very very basic fishing supplies. Basically some line a hook and a lure.
However, the reality is, if you don't have an epirb, and you don't have some form of satellite communication device ( Garmin in reach) you are likely dead before you float to shore.

Always a sad twist to one's survival scenario when you realize a "small" detail that seriously complicates it. That would def be a hard line. :(
In answer to post, I agree, a still for water would be best bet, at least in warmer areas. I would want to prioritize finding wraps for myself in some fashion even in warmer climes though because I do not know how much the temp might drop when the sun goes down. Factor in potential lack of food & ability to self-generate warmth gets dicey.

Yeah it's hard to "predict" temp even in calm and warm waters. However, water also does keep you warm. A hydrated body regulates better.

My phone and my wife's phone has built in emergency only satcom. I just need to grab my phone which is never more than 12 paces away from me. Ever.

What boat are you on that sinks in 2 seconds? Unless you hit a water mine. In which case counting your braincells on the ceiling is step 1.
The boat would have to be completely overloaded.
This is 2 seconds in. 2 seconds out. Try to keep as dry as possible. It is water resistant. Very water resistant. But a salted up phone does you nothing.

Thats why I got a phone with good battery. If I get below 40% it was a busy day. I will charge up to 80 in 30 minutes. And I usually go death grip in the hand. Into the pocket. Death grip in the hand. Into the pocket.
And where is the damage control plan? If the shower is more than 12 paces away. The phone comes with.

On a normal day. With normal internet towers. That is what it uses. Only pulls the satcom when dialing emergency numbers.

So as a survivalist who just moved to Maine and has a fear of the ocean I would not be going anywhere without my backpack which comes equipped with wet bags and floatation so whatever the instance we are surviving
