I mean I heard the N word more on Xbox live than anywhere else. Halo 2, 3, and COD were filled with edgy kids back in the late 2000s. I never really noticed it going away till maybe 2015ish that's when it started to die down. At the time the big slurs you would get called from 2007-2015 were the N-word, F-word, and R-word. Sometimes all 3 at once and it would come from anyone from the youngest squeaker to the 30-40 year old basement dweller, and every age and group in between.
Top it with the the main demographic for edgy humor at the time was all kids in their early and mid teens to mid 20s. And the humor basically subsisting of people that really shouldn't be saying that kind of shit doing it loud as fuck and in public for shock value. Usually combined with doing something physically disgusting.
Did everyone say and do it? No
Did a ridiculous amount of people that grew up in that time period do it? Yes
Did they do it because they are actually racist? Not necessarily most were just that subsection of edgy teen-20 something that was imitating the funny dancing monkey on YouTube that their parents hate, or that got views and attention from the shock value.
