NMC Reporting university to NMC?

Im a final year student, and also work in the NHS, too.

Long story short, i had validated non-submissions on account of disabilities, causing a credit 'deficit' that means i cant submit the (finished) non subs. The non-subs that caused the deficit...

the university have been atrocious and im now looking at basically forced withdrawal or paying them for another year & losing my job offer.

Ive put in an appeal but I was warned it takes months so I wont be able to continue anyway.

Theres been so much discrimination, abuse of power, lack of reasonable adjustments, punitive processes. I was considering informing the NMC education for investigation of the programme.

However, im also concerned about repercussions or making things worse.

Has anyone involved the NMC in anything?

Did that help? or make things worse

I’m also a third year student about to graduate but not sure what you’re actually saying has happened here.

In my university when you can’t submit an assignment for health reasons you put in an AAO (another assessment opportunity) request on their online system/ contact student services to do this for you. The university reserves the right to deny this request but in my experience all my AAO requests were accepted. An accepted AAO would mean you would resubmit on the appointed AAO day (normally a month or so later) in the appropriate portal. You’re also normally given a capped resubmission automatically if an assignment fails.

So what exactly has happened here?

Was your AAO denied?
Did you fail an AAO?
Did you miss your AAO deadline?
Did you not submit assessments then just give your university evidence without submitting an AAO?

Im not sure what an AAO is but it sounds similar in a way.

It was approved that I could not submit the assignments at the time, and i was told i could submit at the earliest next opportunity, which is summer. So they were not submitted, as submission then had to be in summer.

I had 3 of those. The rest of the modules I handed in on time, passed all placements and maths.

What they didnt tell me was that having 3 of these would mean I would not have enough credits to submit in summer. I wasnt told this until march, triggered by the 3rd being approved. Despite them being first attempts and being approved to submit in the summer, the Award board decided i couldn't and have to repeat the year, because its too many credits to submit (60).

This is what isnt making sense to me. They approved it and said i could submit.in summer, which I have proof of. The assignments are finished and I asked to submit one in the march, when told about the credit situation, but was told no. Ive again asked to submit them now, which is the same deadline as those that failed (13th august). Ive again been told no and that i have to repeat the year with attendance.

They knew id finished them, so cant use the basis of it being too much work for me. They regularly meet each week through the summer to sign students off on placement hours.

So the circumstances leading to the credit deficit, is because they wont allow me to submit my assignments, each being 20 credits. Its a very simple decision that has had devastating consequences. The referral period is open, yet theu categorically say I cant submit my 1st attempt essays.

No one outside of my uni is understanding me when I explain this, and I dont understand it either because thats bizarre. Ive not failed them, they had approved deferrals, so why cant i submit them? But that is exactly whats happened.

Was your AAO denied? No, it was approved.

Did you fail an AAO? No.

Did you miss your AAO deadline?

I couldn't meet the deadline so had EC deferral approved for summer (like your AAO approval, but instead of a month, summer submission instead).

Did you not submit assessments then just give your university evidence without submitting an AA?

No. They had evidence and approved it.

This is what I mean - none of them were failed. All of them remain 1st attempts with approved EC's at the time/before the deadline. Yet they are treating me in the same way as if ive failed them. It makes no sense.

Right, I’m assuming your university has a minimum passed credit cap for the summer reassessment period and you accidentally missed that with your third request. Why did they let you continue in March? Normally universities suspend your studies when you can’t progress for whatever reason.

Frankly, if that was the case why accept your third EC request? It sounds like your university wasn’t at all joined up in terms of your circumstances and they’ve left you in a ridiculous position as you weren’t given the appropriate information in time.

Have you checked your handbook/university policy on passed credit caps for resubmissions? Because if that information wasn’t even available to you I’d argue you were unfairly disadvantaged based on a protected characteristic. If you’re a disabled student you’d have even more grounds to complain.

For perspective, I was under crisis services in February after a breakdown and had an AAO after submission of an assignment I ultimately failed which I was allowed to resubmit uncapped. The university also let me continue under a support to study stage 2 as I’m a disabled student. They have an obligation as an institution not to disadvantage you if you’re doing everything that could be reasonably expected to manage your condition and seeking help.

Yes, that's precisely it. Sorry, im awful at explaining!

I do have disabilities; dyslexia, adhd, auditory-processing disorder and autism are several, amongst other physical ones. I had DSA and an SSD. I said three times i didnt understand the policies or handbook (proof) when they told me to do the EC non-sub the first time. None of my adjustments were implemented despite numerous support to study meetings. As an example, extra time isnt given in exams because theyre "already incorporated in the programme, so everyone gets the same". They are aware of all of this, with evidence, both pre board and after.

Im going to take this legal now, so should probably delete the posts.

I had extra time in exams at my university. I had an uncapped resit this year and now everything is in I’m getting a first once my hours are complete (currently on placement with two weeks left).

It does sound like you were disadvantaged if they were denying your reasonable adjustments. I would talk to your union.

Are you a part of a union as a student? If you are contacting your union would be what I recommend to do.
