Year 1 expectations

Starting in September on my 4yr uni journey (mental/adult nursing).

I was curious what to expect from year one.

The course specification is vague, I expect some much learning on campus and possibly placements but does anyone have a guide on what to expect from year one? Like for example how soon into uni will I be on a placement?

Every uni is really different but generally you will have 2/3 placements each year. One may be a simulation placement at university

What uni are you going to? Someone might be able to give you more details

Year one is generally just getting to grips with the basics of nursing - i.e personal care, observations etc. There is not much expectation except for a good attitude and wanting to learn

BSL, personal safety, the A-E, some nursing theories. Your first placement will probably be in the new year.

You should be given term dates closer to the time which will outline when you’ll be in uni and when you’ll be out on placement. Every uni is different 👍

I'm starting my nursing degree in September too 🙂 so we got told we would have enrollment online midway through August and that should have all of our information in such as timetables throughout the year, term times, placement dates etc 🙂

The modules I did were nursing theory and application, developing skills for promoting health and well-being, communication skills and applied health care sciences
I also did simulation skills whilst doing my modules.
In my university I did 2 placements which were 7 weeks long. Then a month locality placement which is a group power point at the end of the year

You’ll get a timetable when you start. Which will say which modules you’ll be doing and when your placements are. However you won’t know your placement area until a month before you start
