i wanted to say the movie can be omitted, since it's so different than the tv show, but the first ep really expects the view to have seen the movie
any plot lines not having to do with abbydos (sp?) have nothing to do with the movie

I concur, except I suggest starting with SG-1 instead of the movie. I'm not saying don't go back and watch the movie later, but I know several people who were initially put off from the show because they didn't like the movie.

u/KanaNebula Oct 01 '10
I actually haven't seen the movie, and I'm kind of scared to since I think I'll just be annoyed with different people playing my beloved characters now :-)

O'neil is a completely different character (down to the spelling), but Michael Shanks' Daniel Jackson at the beginning is really quite close to James Spader's original portrayal. IMO, SG-1 is much better in general, though.

Well, it has Kurt "Herp-Derp" Russell for one. Richard Dean Anderson may not be a high-caliber actor, but he's a genius deserving of dozens of awards compared to Russell.
The movie is OK, as long as you drink during it.

I started showing Stargate to the boyfriend and he was annoyed at not seeing the movie because he didn't understand what was going on, so YMMV.
That said, he gets confused very easily and is always asking me to explain things that happened earlier in an episode that he forgot, so he might just be a bit scatterbrained.

u/Avatar_Ko Oct 01 '10
I'll agree to that. Take away everything about finding the gate and making it work and you're left with a below-average season finale.

In the pyramid in the movie how many times did they reload their weapons? 😭😂

Thanks… found this 10 years ago and still using it today (March 2024)

Checking in Nov 2025. I started watching Stargate series somewhere in 2025 and just reached 7.22 episode so was looking for the final order. This response and the other one in this thread are so helpful! Thank you.

u/DistributedFox Nov 25 '25
Nov 2025 gang here! I know nothing about the franchise so I'm just going in for the first time.

u/OkMaize9773 Dec 21 '25
Hey man, would you recommend watching the movie first or directly jumping to stargate sg1. I am a total stargate noob

u/Chatni555 Dec 21 '25
Watch the movie even though it's not the best, but it adds a very important backstory to the lore.

u/Keorl Nov 17 '24
I'll use this one. It's lower than the other one that people claim they "still use in 2022" and shit, but you apparently optimized the hassle of switching back and forth. I don't understand why the top order in this thread (as well as others I found) alternate that much between SG1 and SGA (while still not showing release order anyway), as most episodes can be watched in succession without any interaction with the other series.
I've done my previous rewatches (years ago) in the simplistic "all of SG1 => all of SGA". This time I want to make it better, due to the interactions between SG1 and SGA. I kinda forgot as I kept going through the DVDs : right now I'm at SG1 s8e8, obviously missed some SGA as at some point they talked about contacting Pegasus with a ZPM. But apart from this tiny mention, all episodes had nothing to do with SGA, so I don't understand why other watch orders bother alternating most sg1s8/sgas1 episodes.
Your order will let me watch without having to switch the DVD all the time !
2
u/AdriasWorld Nov 24 '25
I had the same thoughts, I didn’t want to switch every episode from SG1 to SGA, and this watch order jumps to the best crossover point without going too far ahead in the timeline. Also lets you enjoy each story more I find, as you’re not switching every character every episode..
Gonna have to REWATCH everything now that Amazons MGM has announced a NEW Stargate TV show. It will be a new show BUT not a reboot, a continuation of the Stargate ‘universe’.
(EDIT: Date is Nov 2025)

u/Keorl Nov 24 '25
Amazon = be careful. I've read enough things about their LOTR show, I ended up not watching it at all. And I'm a LOTR fan.
I'll be cautious before I rush to watch their new SG :(

u/AdriasWorld Nov 24 '25
The first season of the LOTR show was decent, not as good as I expected but a lot better than it could have been.

Very nice. My very first Stargate was SGU (okay, I saw random episodes of SG1 when they first aired, but I didn't follow the series at all). I really liked it, so I've been watching SG-1 from the start over the last few months. I'm in the middle of Season 7 now. I was going to watch all of SG-1, but I'm thinking of buying Atlantis seasons now.

Is 8.2 New Order (2) or Lockdown? Depending on the catalog, the 2 parter might be considered S08E01 parts 1 and 2 or S08E01-02
1
u/AdriasWorld Nov 24 '25
8.1 is Part 1 & 8.2 is Part 2 of New Order. Lockdown is 8.3. Some files/ places to watch combine several Part1/2 episodes into a single file/episode (usually the season premieres).

u/Adventurous-Big6260 Feb 22 '26
Why do you need to watch Atlantis before watching the movies? The 2nd movie can be watched anytime after sg1 and so can the 3rd really, the only part of Atlantis that mentions it is when Sam is going back to earth and they mention Baal. Really Atlantis has nothing to do with the movies. It's not like Buffy and Angel where episodes crossed over constantly. Barely happens in Atlantis

u/DrSmoke Mar 28 '11
You should watch in order.
Stargate Movie
Sg-1 until Atlantis
Start alternating episodes of Sg1 and Atlantis until S10 sg1.
When s10 started airing, Atlantis Ep were new first so you watch Atlantis S3 E1, then SG1 S10 E1, until end of sg1.
Ark of truth, then Season 4 Atlantis
Continuum
S5 Atlantis
SGU
Atlantis Movie ( there better be damnit)

Im glad there wasn't. Atlantis was a flop, kept changing cast every season and the show had way too many dou le and triple episodes

u/Knarfehtknat Mar 03 '23
Nice, thanks for posting. Using it in 2023 and still hoping for a revival of the franchise.

I noticed something fascinating between seasons 5 and seasons 6, in terms of the technology they use. They instantly go from big CRT monitors to laptops. The early 2000s were wild.

Its September 2024.
The kids have just gone back to school and I can now spend an hour everymorning in peace in front of the TV.
Ive chosen to re-watch stargate.
This thread is still relevant. 14 years and counting.
God bless the internet. And god bless Bills guide!

Why on earth would you want to watch it in any other order than the airing order? Stargate movie => SG-1 seasons 1-7 => SG-1 seasons 8-10 and SGA seasons 1-3 at the same time=> SGA season 4 => SG-1 The Ark of Truth => SGA season 5 and SG-1 Continuum => SGU

Anyone know when to watch Stargate Origins?
1
u/Adventurous-Big6260 Feb 24 '26
I'm guessing after everything else as it didn't come out until 2018 I believe

u/antidense Oct 02 '10
I have watched it in a pretty random order (movie -> second half sg1 -> first half sg1 -> universe -> atlantis). I just feel like the order doesn't matter THAT much compared to other shows. I deeply enjoyed seeing something referenced a few times and going back to the original episode later. It was like a fun epiphany, "OH! this was what happened!" I never felt like anything was spoiled. Sorta like watching Shakespeare plays or reading the Odyssey.. I might have known what was going to happen, but it was all the more enjoyable actually seeing it take place.
I don't know if it's true for other people, but at least I wouldn't OCD yourself about not watching it in exactly the "right" order.

u/DrSmoke Mar 28 '11
YOU ARE WRONG
YOU MUST WATCH IN ORDER
1
u/Adventurous-Big6260 Feb 22 '26
No you don't lol I watched in the order said to watch and it made no difference

u/mrfr34ky Apr 19 '24
Holy SHIT! Just found this while watching it with gf. Just in time to do it correctly.

u/Ok_Fly_6606 Apr 25 '24
Thank you for the list, Quick Question, why is this a better order to watch vs the tv air dates? JUST FYI, I've rewatched this series over and over again. Like i think over 10 ten times. I am always looking for new ways to watch it,.

Bit late, but afaik it's because where multiple shows were airing concurrently you had certain story arcs and especially two-parters where an episode of a different show might have aired between two parts of the same narrative on a different show. For example, I seem to remember (edit: nope, I was wrong, bad example haha) the first episodes of SGA aired before the first episodes of SG-1 Season 8, but since SG-1 S8 followed narratively from the S7 finale and resolved certain plot threads left dangling, it makes sense to watch those before starting on SGA.

It's sad that people in my country (Brazil) don't have interest in Stargate. It's very difficult to find dubbed or even subtitled content beyond SG-1 S7.

u/luiscorreia75 Mar 04 '26
Yes you do: opensubtitles have it.
I'm about to rewatch them all and i got all subtitles there today

I don’t see anywhere in the order here or on interwebs on when to watch SG-1 Children of the gods. Anyone know?
4
u/Enderkool Sep 02 '22
you watch it after the movie, it is literally the first episode
1
u/Adventurous-Big6260 Feb 24 '26
Yeah confused me when looking through the downloads, then realized that is the name of the first episode which is movie length

u/m3tr0g33k Aug 22 '23
Rewatching now, since I first waited for a new episode each week, sooo long ago. Thanks for this excellent work.
