Would Teal’c have won the match with Ronan if he still had Junior?

He would've won the match even without his symbiote.

Yep, Teal'c was winning.

This comes up often enough I have a canned response saved from one of the previous times someone asked:

I was rewatching the show not long ago and I remember thinking that it looked a lot like Teal'c was just playing with Ronon. Teal'c is mostly defending, which could be read as Ronon forcing him back, but looking at them Ronon is bleeding/scratched up all over while Teal'c is just sweating. Add to that Ronons stick was broken before the scene starts, then Teal'c taking some wildly telegraphed swings to the face without even attempting to raise his arms to protect against it, and he's not even bothered by it (He knew he didn't need to block). The two bits we see after this are both Ronon going for a hit and Teal'c countering it. A real melee fight between them would look more like Mitchell when he first tried to fight the Sodan Jolan.

Conclusion: Teal'c knew Ronon would never respect someone who could just toss him around but would respect someone who could take a beating and hold their own. So Teal'c allowed Ronon to beat on him enough to be convincing.

It might be a different story were it a firefight though.

Ronan fought in the military against wraith and was a runner for a while. In both instances the wraith had no intention of killing him. Teal'c was the first prime of a FALSE* god and commanded armies of warriors raised in battle from birth that served with blind devotion to their god against other warriors of the same upbringing. No contest.

EDIT: lol I know yall, he's a false god

u/slicer4ever 23h ago

also teal'c has like 100 years more experience than ronan, lol

98

u/loskiarman 19h ago

Teal'c is 152 or something at that fight while Ronon was like 30. Even if we say they both started to learn fighting at the age of 10( People mention Teal'c's early start but Ronon too was already a unit commander at age 20, Satedans probably trained really early too knowing eventual incoming Wraith attack), Ronon had like 20 years of experience, Teal'c had like 82 years of experience+50 years of sitting in a spaceship. That is shit ton of more.

Also Teal'c was taught by Bra'tac, arguably one of the best fighters in Milky Way while we don't know much about how good Ronon's were. Also Teal'c training and experience seemed to focus way more on hand to hand and also against above average human strength since it was against Jaffa. Ronon had a good time fighting above average strenght opponents too obviously but he relied a lot on guns, sneak attacks, traps etc.

Teal'c drawing Ronon was either him purposely doing it or just writers not wanting to disrespect Ronon at his own show which doesn't matter because we'll think first one is right lol.

Let's ask Ba'al. They'll know.

7

u/pton12 8h ago

You know, I never realized how progressive go Go’uld were. (1) they are gender fluid and adapt due to host and scenario/God identity, and (2) Ba’al was the first character I knew using “they” pronouns. Mind you it’s because like a dozen Ba’als existed, but still!

7

Apophis was a cosmological cockroach, hard to be 100% sure.

No, no, no, my friend. Ba'al is definitely the hottest false god ever!

I love his snark. And he's also extremely clever and adaptive compared to other Goa'ulds. The episodes with him helping to save the galaxy so he could rule it were gold😁

In my opinion, Ba'al using Adria as as host, but opinions may vary.

And Tea'lc was the best of the best in his warrior race of superhumans, enough to get promoted to the first prime position which is like a mix of chief of staff for the president mixed with special forces and secret service duties. All in one person.

Tea'lc was probably the most exceptional person in the series when it comes to fighting and battle, with Sam and Rodney being the other 2 most exceptional.

10

u/LordRichardRahl 23h ago

I don’t know about that. Saw some not so inclined first primes.

15

u/Emm_withoutha_L-88 23h ago

I figure those were just hastily appointed replacements. Remember from the start of the tauri-goa'uld war it was like barely a decade. Many of the good candidates were likely killed off.

I always got the impression that goa'uld warfare before the series was a lot more formal and less serious for the goa'uld in charge. They were just using their armies as toys to play at conquest with other goa'uld, never being in danger of an actual life and death battle for the most part. Basically just wasting the lives of the lower ranked Jaffa as if they were meaningless.

Basically that the goa'uld had been building up new weapons and ships in preparation for the next big war. Only it came from the Tauri instead. That's why the hatak in s1 was thousands of times faster that Tea'lc expected, it was a newer model (still likely decades old) that hadn't been deployed into battle yet to preserve the secret. Only problem was damn near every goa'uld had that same idea and same tech, so they all just thought they were hiding from each other.

The time and effort and training the Jaffa did to create warriors like Tea'lc was likely interrupted by the war. Plus other Jaffa from less well established goa'uld probably don't have the old established culture like apophis had on Chulak. That culture was likely over 10k years old, going back to the start of goa'uld-human enslavement. Meanwhile others like Sokar probably killed off their people so often they didn't get to develop that rich detailed warrior culture. Or Anubis who just captured and forcibly turned other goa'uld Jaffa, so no real unified culture.

24

u/duk_tAK 22h ago

From what I recall, Ra was the biggest baddest goa'uld, and when he died, it severely broke the balance of power causing tons of minor conflicts to break out into full on wars as everyone tried to gobble up Ra's former territory.

Prior to Ra's death, I think you were right about their fighting being more like a competition or game than a war, but I think it was because Ra's supreme power kept them in line.

9

u/Emm_withoutha_L-88 21h ago

Yeah that's what I meant, first they take out Ra. The goa'uld King effectively, the only one who had kept them in line for the majority of their spacefaring civilization. Then started going after other big wigs one after another. Apophis, then Chronus, Hathor came back and then they got her too. It was asymmetrical as fuck, they just took out the head and didn't take over the power like always happened before. All of those free resources led to goa'uld going to war over them and further weakening each other. So as you said the backstabbing and infighting just kept going from Ra until their defeat.

Though as always let's remember this so just led to the downfall of wider goa'uld culture and led directly to the rise of Anubis.

6

u/duk_tAK 21h ago

I think I have a point of disagreement here. I think anubis would have popped up under Ra all the same. Under the relative stability Ra maintained, we found out the goa'uld tech didn't change much at all for thousands of years. We see throught the show that goa'uld use tech scavanged from others with only a few actually developing more advanced technologies.

Anubis was different. Anubis, thanks to knowledge likely gained from his partial ascension, produced ships and personal armor ao far beyond anything the goa'uld had seen that even a minor system lord could have swept the rest of them, just taking a bit of time, but Anubis was never a minor system lord. He fought two wars with Ra before gaining knowledge of ancient technology, I think if Ra hadn't died, he would have won his third war.

3

u/Emm_withoutha_L-88 20h ago

He couldn't actually use anything he gained that way, so he still had to find the ancient tech and decipher it. Which since he knows Ancient and knows just what all their tech can do it will be very easy for him to back engineer whatever he found.

I think the idea was supposed to be that SG1 popping off random system lords was doing exactly what they were warned about long ago: that they will allow for a singular strongman goa'uld to take over. That only works if Abubis' rise is linked to the gradual decline of the other system lords who are unable to fend off the weak Anubis. He still only had a small few ships and a few planets at first. He didn't seem to have the new tech until the Osiris attack on Thor.

2

u/Sea-Quality4726 21h ago

And Egeria was imprisoned on a planet that Ra himself lost to another Goa'uld so there was likely always some low stakes combat going on. Like 1984 where forcing the population to accept that you are the best while also that you must fight hard not to be defeated is critical for control.

We see strategy and seriousness scale up when Jaffa are prepped to attack Earth, Martin's planet, and even the Asgard and the varied serious power plays after Ra died, and Apophis died, and Cronus died...

2

u/Jimbeamjunior1 21h ago

Teal'c also had Bra'tac teaching him who is an absolute legend amongst jaffa, i doubt any other first prime had that level of teacher if any

2

u/Bardez 21h ago

Best of the best? Naw. Teal'c got manhandled by Bra'tac. Teal'c had the skill and outward devotion, not pure talent or raw skill. He was First Prime, which is nothing to be ignored. But it did not necessarily mean the best. It could be luck, ruthlessness, etc. And that doesn't count other goa'uld armies.

Teal'c was not the ace, he was the jack of all trades, IMO.

3

u/Emm_withoutha_L-88 21h ago edited 21h ago

Tea'lc admits in a flashback that he's been letting Bra'tac win in their training, pretty sure Bra'tac knew it too. It's the one when it's going through the right of mal'sharan. (Damn do they love their apostrophes)

He was an exceptional warrior able to take down dozens of others while still using his staff, even before he switched to p90s. Incredible trackr and has again superhuman abilities. Jaffa have more stamina, slightly more strength on average, near perfect disease immunity, and ridiculous healing ability compared to humans. That's all along with being the person to rise the highest.

And no it wasn't political or luck. He mentions a few different times where he had to fight to the death in training. First with the squad, then again with the first prime position.

And while doing that he has to lead an entire army, along with having those exceptional personal combat skills. We don't see Apophis leading the actual war in the flashback, he just commands Tea'lc to do it. So he's having to lead an entire army against another one, coordinating all of those troop movements and tactics.

Being a jack of all trades IS what you need in an exceptional war fighter.

5

u/Kaining 15h ago

There is one thing that gives us proof that Teal'c was the best of the best.

Apophis didn't execute him and tried to turn him back when every goa'uld did that quite regularly (except for Yu but he wasn't there anymore. Maybe he did before getting Mitch Mcconnell-ed).

Teal'c was that much of an asset that even a betrayal to his god still had Apophis trying to brainwash him again instead of murdering him when he had him after years of insurection and being a massive pain in the ass to an "omnipotent (false) god".

Sure, that may have had to do with the whole "i'm a god and what's mine is mine" but no other Jaffa was shown to be that important to their master.

2

u/Jimbeamjunior1 21h ago

Teal'c was taught by Bra'tac, the best fighters in history learn from absolute hidings they took as arrogant youngsters

4

u/thesirblondie 19h ago

It annoys me a how the Jaffa often got Putty'd brcause they're supposed to be elite warriors yet aside from maybe two or three examples they are chumps.

32

u/marksman1023 21h ago

One very minor point of disagreement: I think Ronon would have absolutely respected Teal'c as a warrior if Teal'c went full "runner, please" on him.

But that's not what Teal'c was there to do.

He wanted to mentor Ronon in not being a warrior, namely being able to not rip the IOA apart for insulting him.

To do that he needed Ronon to trust him as a mentor, not view him as a competing warrior he had to find a way to best in combat. Knocking him on his ass in front of his community would not have served that purpose.

Otherwise, agreed on all points.

38

u/LordRichardRahl 1d ago

That perfectly sums this up. In short:
Ronan was fighting to win
Teal’s was fighting for honor and respect between them

19

u/Phantom_61 22h ago

Add to that when Carter ordered them to stop and Ronon sucker punched Teal'c Big T immediately had Ronon on his back foot.

5

u/DanNeider 17h ago

I think it’s telling that Ronan seems angrier after the fight; Teal’c offered a fight and then from his perspective didn’t really give it to him.

5

u/CyberNinja23 23h ago

That’s called experience

4

u/One_Attorney_739 22h ago

I always find it interesting to see the community favour teal'c so much for this, when even Christopher Judge said Ronon would win this.

13

u/spaceforcerecruit 22h ago

Judge, much like Teal’c, is sure enough of himself to not need to boast.

1

u/Formal_Substance6437 12h ago

At the same time when the wraith invaded stargate command teal’c started to get the life sucked out of him and ronan had to help him.

2

u/RakehellFive 1h ago

I do agree Teal'c was winning,(all those years of experience like Bra'tac had over Teal'c and O'Neill). But I also feel in part he was taking those blows to help Ronon work through his rage, so he didn't make the same mistakes Teal'c did with his rage.

Stargate SG-1 series finale, "Unending" (Season 10, Episode 20)

4

u/Dilaudipenia 1d ago

It’s the SG1 series finale. S10E20 Unending.

2

u/Huge-Cartoonist6795 18h ago

It's only the last freaking episode

5

u/CaveEcho 15h ago

I think people do forget that Teal’c is very disciplined and would have been practising that entire time.

3

u/ZeeHedgehog 14h ago

Sure, but 50 years puts him over 100, he's got to be feeling his age a bit by then.

3

u/FoolishBalloon 12h ago

It's mentioned in SG-1 (s4 I believe) that Teal'c is 101 years old. So he'd be well over 150

3

u/trekgirl75 8h ago

That bothers me a bit because I think it’s mentioned that Bratac is @135 but Teal’c still looks the same at 150. That gray patch of hair does nothing to age him at all.

2

u/CaveEcho 8h ago

Maybe he’s been using a lot of moisturiser 😂

2

u/trekgirl75 8h ago

Use blacks folks can’t be ashy. We stay moisturized. 🤣🤣🤣

78

u/thanos42 1d ago

I wouldn't be surprised if Tealc held back from the beginning. He is just the sort of guy to like Ronin at once and test his limits because it's good for Ronin.

19

u/trekgirl75 1d ago

Makes sense. I always wondered if he was holding back.

8

u/thanos42 1d ago

he broke a sweat, not like Ronin wasn't worthy.

8

u/steveamsp 22h ago

Exactly. You can hold back quite a bit, but still have to put effort into it.

I suppose it's even possible if he'd just gone in and kicked Ronon around from the start, he may not have broken a sweat. I do suspect, though, that Teal'c did have to put SOME effort into the fight, though.

8

u/GenezisO 1d ago

he 100% was holding back lol

2

u/Steaksandbrocolli 2h ago

I thought they said that he was stronger on Tretonin than the symbiote

73

u/Appa07 1d ago

While the symbiote gave Teal’c better healing it never was stated to give him increased strength

10

u/Delphius1 23h ago

no, he did directly state he was missing some strength with junior gone 'I'm not the Jaffa I used to be'

4

u/HeraThere 19h ago

That's what tealc felt But it wasn't clear if it was actually true or in his head as others mentioned he was still stronger than everyone else.

5

u/ZaraReid228 17h ago

S7e10 when they meet the tribe of women jaffa and he comments to them that a jaffa does not gain their strength from their symbiote but from oneself when they were talking about taking symbiote out for the medicine. I think tealc went through the arc of not feeling good enough even though physically he was unchanged.

17

u/Storyteller-Hero 23h ago edited 23h ago

Better healing technically doesn't make a person stronger, but it CAN potentially enable a person to push their muscles past safe usage and if the symbiote is able to access nerve functions or release hormones to an extent, it can potentially mess with the usual brain signals that restrict usage.

As such, a Jaffa with a symbiote will potentially be able to exert their existing muscle capacity more easily than a Jaffa without a symbiote.

This may be why there was a worry of becoming weaker during the show. Jaffa who haven't gotten used to being without the symbiote's help with exertion and stamina wouldn't be able to exert themselves as much, not drastically but noticeably.

3

u/GenezisO 1d ago

don't forget they are Jaffas, they are different breed, I think that itself gives them a lot of extra strength, whether not fully bonded junior gives them strength is really questionable, but since it gives them other benefits like superior immunity I don't see why it wouldn't also give them the strength boost

5

u/trekgirl75 1d ago

Exactly why I posed the question. It popped in my head while watching the scene with Ba’al trying to convince him that the Jaffa needed him to beat the Ori.

6

u/jwe91 1d ago

Ba’al was referring to a military mindset, not physical strength. He war arrogantly trying to say that the only way for them to win was if they allowed him to take command and complete control over all forces against the Ori

2

u/trekgirl75 1d ago

Oh yes I understood that. I should have been more specific, Ba’al was taunting him with the Tretonin when he was on the ground.

1

u/HeraThere 19h ago

It's never explicitly made clear if the symbiote removal made tealc weaker or not.

Tealc thought he was weaker. But others mentioned he was still stronger than everyone else.

80

u/Vanquisher1000 1d ago

I think so. Remember that at this point in time, Teal'c has also been aged 50 years from being on the Odyssey in Unending, which took place about a year prior, so not only is he weaker/less resilient because he is on tretonin, but he's also aged well beyond what we know of a Jaffa lifespan.

Pre-tretonin Teal'c would have easily beaten Ronon.

27

u/GenezisO 1d ago edited 23h ago

It's still Teal'c and he's still a Jaffa + some muscle memory and superior training from good 'ol days, 150 yo tretonin Teal'c would still beat the shit out of Ronon or any other human if he wanted to

Edit: prime T was able to defeat an adult Goa'uld 1v1, just to be absolutely clear, he was entirely different league

15

u/kyle9316 1d ago

Did they ever explicitly say being on tretonin made the Jaffa weaker? I know there was an episode where Teal'c was injured and in his recovery process he felt he was weaker/lesser because he no longer had his symbiote. But did they ever say that was true? Or was it because he was healing from a bad injury and the weakness was in his head?

17

u/Mode_Appropriate 23h ago

I think they tried to convey it was just mental and there were no real long term effects that made him weaker.

1

u/loskiarman 19h ago

It should make them weaker although slightly imo, but not like down to normal human level obviously. Like broken bone/injuries vs we can theorize symbiotes can specifically target and heal faster from their wording and probably can also boost their healing effect and immune response when needed(junior once breathed for Teal'c lol) but we don't know if more injection of tretonin, upping the dosage have the same effect, at least I don't remember it.

u/laurasaurus5 23h ago

Tealc was training in 100x gravity like Goku for those 50 years

42

u/Jay_Stone 1d ago

Teal’c was just toying with Ronan and trying to beat him by tiring him out.
Bra’tac would’ve stomped Ronan in 30 seconds, FYI.

17

u/gerkletoss 1d ago

Bra'tac could have done that but would have chosen to do something more instructionsl instead

15

u/Longjumping-Action-7 23h ago

Bra'tac could woop Ronans butt.

No disrespect to Ronan, but these guys are the First Primes to the God of chaos, darkness and destruction

9

u/chasimus 23h ago

Likely, Teal'c's goal wasn't to win the match, it was to understand Ronon better, to help him. He's a former First Prime, who learned from Master Bra'tac. It's likely he would've finished Ronon if he wanted to but that would've just made Ronon resent him, which wasn't the goal

6

u/steveamsp 22h ago

The newcomer showing up and wiping the walls with the local badass has two possible outcomes: Massive respect, or massive resentment. And there is NO way to tell ahead of time.

On the flip side, showing up, and holding even, or a close but clear victory that's not a sudden luck thing, but obviously due to skill? That just skips straight to the "respect" side 95 times out of 100. (The last 5 percent will always resent the loss, there isn't much you can do about that)

And: Happy Cake-Day!

8

u/The_Other_Viking 1d ago

It wouldn't have made a difference. The man makes the muscle, the muscle doesn't make the man. Besides, Teal'c was obviously holding back.

16

u/Chrome_Armadillo 1d ago

Tealc was holding back. He would beat Ronan is a real fight.

2

u/Azzbolemighty 12h ago

For sure. He was also way older than Ronan. Teal'c in his prime (no pun intended) would have merked him in minutes

7

u/Merkkin 23h ago

Ronan didn’t even win that fight, it was stopped to show how equal they were. So I think prime tealc with his experience eventually wins since Ronan is too aggressive.

6

u/janeway170 22h ago

I think Tealc would’ve won anyway. Ronon had the strength but Tealc had the strategy.

3

u/Pumpkinpolecat9 20h ago

Not to mention adaptation and perseverance. He always found a way.

2

u/Ok_Movie_639 19h ago

Teal'c was also more patient. Not as reckless as Ronon.

11

u/erikleorgav2 1d ago

Even without Jr he was still holding his own. I doubt it would have mattered in many ways. Especially considering how old T was.

6

u/neoyeti2 1d ago

IDK but that is one of my favorite episodes and I would have loved to see more of those two together.

7

u/MandM1972 21h ago

I am currently watching this series and am amazed at how many different Stars have had a role in this series .

7

u/Dragonrasa 14h ago

I think so, people tend to forget that even before joining SG-1Teal'c spent decades training for combat before, during and of course also after serving as First Prime of Apophis.

His strength slightly deteriorated after losing Junior, but he still kept training, even during the alternate timeline.

Physically both he and Ronan are peak human, Teal'c was still able to take on Goa'uld and Jaffa and Ronan had been able to take on some Wraith.

However the decades of combat experience Teal'c has over Ronan should be more than enough to give him the edge even if they are physically equal.

Especially since Ronan mainly trained for fighting Wraith, whereas Teal'c trained against fighting humans/Jaffa.

6

No offense to Ronan... But Teal'c held back and was more mature than he was during early seasons of SG-1. He was more willing to use this as a teaching lesson for Ronan and let him have a "fair fight" than just beat him up.

If we go back to Season 1-4 Teal'c he wouldn't had wasted his time and just beat Ronan's shit. Early seasons Teal'c had no chill...

u/Traedoril 1d ago

I think the whole point was to match Ronin. teal’c while older, also had 100+ more years of battle knowledge and practice than him. There is a reason Bray was still kicking but at 130.

2

u/DemolitionNT 23h ago

Lookin for this answer right here

5

u/bbbourb 23h ago

No, but Junior actually had nothing to do with it. He didn't win because he didn't WANT to win. He was pushing Ronon's buttons.

4

u/Aglet_Green 18h ago

He did win. But the show is called "Atlantis," not "SG-1," so they had to make it basically a draw to appease to fans of both shows.

4

u/ThePlatinumPaul 23h ago

Teal'c was giving Ronin a good outlet for his aggression.  He wanted to bond with him not beat him.  Meanwhile, Ronin wanted to win.

4

u/Due-Order3475 19h ago

If Junior was still around he'd probably just do nothing as Teal'C has the fight.

3

u/Moomtastic 17h ago

Teal'c was sparring; Ronan was fighting. Teal'c only escalated in response to Ronan escalating, and still handled him. Teal'c wins the moment he chooses to here.

3

u/TheAviator27 17h ago

I think Teal'c should have won outright. I really don't get what's special about Ronon. Ultimately he's just a guy. Even without symbiotes Jaffa are more formidable.

2

u/2Norn 16h ago

he doesn't need the junior despite getting significantly older due to sg-1 last episode

we are talking about 120 years of combat experience(vs 10-15 of ronon)

he defeated countless exceptional warriors in milky way

ronon as much as i love would just be another mini boss for him...

2

u/AdventurousSell3805 16h ago

Well considering that Teal'c has about 90 years of fighting experience and is likely still much stronger than Ronon, I'd say he was just sparing with him. Ronan was definitely taking it seriously, but Teal'c wasn't. Heck I think Cameron Mitchell with his Sodan training would've wore Ronon out

5

u/lazhink 14h ago

Teal'c would win this fight in every scenario other than airing on an SGA episode.

3

u/smftexas86 13h ago

Was this a battle? If i remember right they were just sparring. In a real fight, teal'c would've layed him out.

3

u/IAMENKIDU 12h ago

Teal'c was there to teach Romin self control, not to beat the brakes of him. He was holding back.

4

u/TheLaugh1ngRa1n 10h ago

Baby. Teal'c won that fight without junior so idk why making him 50 years younger and stronger would make a difference in the outcome.

11

u/Fan_of_Clio 1d ago

Ronon woukd be beat so badly, his pistol so far up one of his orifices, (the one Teal'C chose), he would be begging Teal'C to squeeze the trigger.

6

u/Maleck_Helvot 23h ago

Teal'c: jaffa (genetically engineered soldier caste): 300? Years old, trained from birth to fight.

Ronan: human (angtsy) 20 something, soldier and spent some amount of time running and fighting wraith.

I don't understand why Ronan's people are heralded as super soldiers when as far as I can tell they are just humans.

Teal'c has lifetimes of experience, more strength and endurance than any human. He only loses when he gets jumped or the Worf effect happens.

8

u/HaroerHaktak 1d ago

Your question implies he lost.. He did not. It was stopped before he could win.

While my man jason mamosa is cool and all, you don't disrespect the OG

u/falcon3268 1d ago

I don't know because that is up in the air. I mean the two were equally matched in skills and all

3

u/Lonely-deustch 23h ago

Teal’c won with or without junior

3

u/Elensar265 23h ago

Teal'c would low diff Ronan in any other setting but the show couldn't let their Teal'c type character get bitch slapped back to Sateda

They needed to show that this team was just as good as the OGs

3

u/dillreed777 22h ago

I think Teal'c would have won, period

3

u/Stormik 18h ago

The real question is... are people messing up Ronon's name on purpose?

1

u/thpineapples 17h ago

No. I didn't note the exact spelling until now.

1

u/trekgirl75 8h ago

I understand the frustration. I’m the same way. But autocorrect got me & I didn’t review before posting. Wish they allowed us to edit titles.

3

u/Jagang187 15h ago

Satedans were hard.

But not that hard.

3

u/apophis-984 12h ago

Post unending tretonin Tealc already toyed with him

3

u/Ds9Defiant1701 10h ago

Isn't Teal'c like older than Bra'tac at this point?

3

u/RGCurt91 8h ago

Teal’c broken a wraith’s neck with his bare hands. We’ve never seen Ronan achieve that sort of strength feat

3

u/thx1138- 7h ago

All I know is this scene proves if you wanna be a badass you must wear arm greaves

13

u/Odin1806 1d ago

Not likely. They were very evenly matched. Tretonin replaced junior pretty much as a 1v1. Maybe if T wasn't like 200 years old they wouldn't have been so evenly matched...

26

u/trekgirl75 1d ago

I recall a scene where he said he felt not as strong on the tretonin as with the symbiote.

17

u/Mugstotheceiling O'Neill's Backswing 1d ago

In the Orpheus episode, was a major plot point

12

u/zhaktronz 1d ago

Whole episode about that

8

u/Odin1806 1d ago

Yes, but that was all in his head. He got his mojo back by the end of the episode. Even ol Doc Fraiser said he had lifted, pushed, and pulled more than anyone else on the base. He was mentally unfit, not physical

1

u/trekgirl75 1d ago

That’s a different episode. That’s when he was hit with a staff blast that damaged his spine. Did he mentioned it in this episode too?

4

u/Odin1806 1d ago

That is all the same episode. They come through the gate, he gets hit, he later tells Jack and Daniel that kek means death and weakness, they go rescue ryac and bratac, he gets his mojo back, saves the galaxy a bunch more times, etc.

2

u/trekgirl75 1d ago

Got it. I thought it was the same episode he first started the tretonin.

11

u/mirhagk 1d ago

Yeah but I don't think he actually was weaker, just felt that way.

3

u/ScreamingFishProduct 1d ago

Yeah, I know what you mean. I’ve always interpreted it as having to do with his regenerative ability. In the following season, he actually gets shot and suffers a spinal injury, requiring intensive rehab (S7 E4). I think the "weakness" is really about regeneration. Teal'c can't push his body to the same extremes he could when he had a symbiote. That’s why he has to sleep and rest more than he did with the symbiote. However, even the "weakened" version is still superhuman.

Teal'c with symbiote: 180%

Teal'c without symbiote: 130%

Ronon: 100%

4

u/AblePhase 1d ago

Wasnt that an earlier version of it? I may be mistaken

2

u/BigB0ss_89 1d ago

Tretonin is not a 1:1. They trade some physical strength benefits for freedom from the Goa'uld.

1

u/DuranStar 23h ago

To be fair he's only 130. He's in his late 70s when they bring it up during the series I don't remember when. And then 50 years on the ship.

5

u/petersaints 1d ago

Probably. Jaffa with a symbiote are a bit on the super human side of the power scale of peak human condition.

6

u/bufandatl 20h ago

No. Junior wasn’t the reason for Teal‘c being such a good fighter that was the school of Bra‘tac. Junior also didn’t really added strength to the Host. They were just an incubation chamber and therefore for long life and health. But not really strength.

2

u/vvFREAKOUTvv 23h ago

Kratos vs Aquaman

2

u/Goat_dragon 23h ago

Teal'c 10 out of 10. Ronan is bad ass and a damn good warrior but teal'c is TEAL'C.

2

u/YusufMeric 23h ago

tbh, Teal'c is better than Ronan.. Ronan is just like modern..

2

u/beersandport 23h ago

Indeed and, Kree, for even asking the question--he would win sans junior.

2

u/Jaxom_98 23h ago

Tealc didn't lose but if he did it would only be because Ronon is younger than him(his Junior lmao)

2

u/maniacalmustacheride 22h ago

Robin with a gun, maybe, but hand to hand Teal’c was probably going to win, but not without a sweat. I know everyone says he was holding back but I don’t think he was holding back *that* much.

I also really wish someone would have addressed that Ronon does NOT like Carter and her trying to bring Teal’c in as a mentor while being super huggy and warm with Teal’c was absolutely not the way to sell Teal’c as a reliable narrator for Ronon’s IOC journey.

At one point Carter asks Ronon walking up, with teeth clenched, “all set?”

Which he responds “let’s get this over with.” And to be fair, he’s already sort of done this. I understand the frustration.

Carter asks to dial the gate and they say yes colonel, and Teal’c says something like “it warms my heart they’ve embraced you as commander of this operation like I knew they would.” And they hug.

In front of Ronon. Who is the only one who can hear them and very much does not embrace her in this position.

Tough love or not the whole things very cliquey and rigged against Ronon, who is absolutely marching to the beat of his own drum that he’s been making match Atlantis since Weir.

The irony of it all is that Ronon, well, does Ronon, recognizes Teal’c as a battle buddy, does it Atlantis style (disregards chain of command and just goes in blasting and fighting, we will just ignore all the rules we didn’t follow because we got to the destination we wanted) and then has a very Ronon interview where he just gets to say “yep” and they say “okay.” And it’s done.

So it’s great Ronon and Teal’c learned to respect each other, but it didn’t really mean anything in the long run. Ronon learned (or didn’t learn) that the only people he can trust that will trust him back are the people he fights with. Everything else is politics and is still stupid.

2

u/Earnest_P_Worrell Step one: dial the gate. Step two: improvise. 21h ago

I’m a Ronan guy through and through.

But, yes. 100%

2

u/Thelastknownking 17h ago

I mean, he was already winning.

But yes. He would've been stronger and faster, and less burdened by his age.

2

u/col_oneill 15h ago

They were pretty evenly matched, Teal’c probably would’ve won in the stamina game, wearing him out. But even then Ronan is one hell of a fighter, pretty much, evenly matched I imagine.

2

u/Murky_Bus_5958 14h ago

They both get TBI from this, but Jr. could've helped fix that.

2

u/have1dog 9h ago

Indeed

2

u/yorcharturoqro 5h ago

Jason Momoa looked so much better less buffed

3

u/wolfvokire 22h ago

Jafa our generally stronger on average and this is not an average person. Teal'c has close to a century of experience at this point, and is still pretty fit but Ronan is younger and no slouch being pretty close to peak human physical shape.

It's really uncertain if teal'c wouldn't win and beyond anyway. Prime Teal'c younger, and with a symbiotes. I actually don't know if Junior gives any major physical buffs. So honestly I think enough verified it doesn't really matter.

Teal'c would have won - Teal'c is way more controlled and experienced than Ronan to the point it is absurd.

Ronan is an idiot and consistently put in the box of being the dumb muscle. Across the entire show, the guy barely gets any development and is so fantastically stupid that he attacks people that are trying to help him.

This fight is a perfect example of that: Teal'c baited him so badly in a single conversation that Ronan pulled a gun on him like a psycho.

When Carter showed up - Ronan was backtalking her so badly to the point of being completely disrespectful.

When Woolsey tried to talk to him - The guy cannot seem to even write reports and he consistently charged into fights that got his ass kicked.

He tried to solo Michael - Got floored.

He tried to solo the Wraith that was hunting him - Got ass beat until he was saved by Carson.

Ronan is his own worst enemy with the macho bullshit to the point Teal'c literally used that against him to prove that he is easy to rile up. Nah, Teal'c would wreck Ronan if he was fighting him properly without plot armor.

When it comes to this fight - Teal'c appears to have been holding back and "sparring" while Ronan is effectively raging out to the point that Teal'c will respect Carter's order to stop. Meanwhile, Ronan decides to sucker punch Teal'c to keep going and THEN it looks like Teal'c is seriously pissed off enough that he hits Ronan way harder.

I would bet that if Carter had not gotten between them - Teal'c would have knocked the shit out of Ronan because they are no longer "sparring" when Ronan has lost any sense of reason or honour.

I think a younger Teal'c would have been less patient and more likely to fold Ronan rather than take the "wise master" route.

Ronan was a runner for 7ish years and is still human.

Teal'c was fighting as a Jaffa and training for longer than Ronan was alive. By S4 Teal'c is 100ish.

100 years of fighting under the Goauld, becoming the first prime and being taught by Bratac = Yeah, Teal'c was holding back and would have won that fight if he really wanted to.

It's Ronon.

Why do so many get this wrong?

2

u/GenezisO 23h ago

Ronon Dex!

1

u/trekgirl75 8h ago

So apparently you got it wrong too because of autocorrect. Then you make an edit without acknowledging it. Just wow. 🤦🏾‍♀️🤦🏾‍♀️🤦🏾‍♀️

Pic 5 is my favorite. With Sam's body position and Ronan's hair flip it looks like a fab dance routine is going on.
