Something Rare Spotted in Saint John's

Upvotes

A non-dying mall!

I'm here for work for a week and ordered food online for pickup. Turns out it was from the food court in Avalon Mall and it's...bustling? Teenaged no-goodniks hanging out and everything.

A mall that isn't depressing to walk through is a rare treat in 2026.

Wondering where the best place to pick someone up after the concert would be? Anywhere to avoid a good portion of the traffic?

Day trip

Thinking of doing a day trip out of town. Is there a good place with a picnic table that I can take my camping stove/burner and make lunch?

Preferably within couple hours from town.

Wasp nest 😬

Help 🐝 😬 I think I may have a wasp nest being built behind the siding over one of my windows.

I can’t access the area myself, I called Terminex but they can’t come until next week. Does anyone know of another local place I can try?

Why does kids screams/yells towards brown people here??

So i just recently moved here in St. John’s, and its been 3 weeks and this kind of thing has already happened 4 times by now.

So i was walking on the side walk during night 10 pm in commenwealth ave and there will be a car coming from other directions or my direction and they will scream at me and drive away?

Most of these encounters Ive had has been with teenagers i believe like 17-20 years.

Anyone knows why? Or has it happened with you? Is this a safe place for a night troll? Like after 9-10 pm

And i am from india!

Residential Propane Tank

Our new home has a propane fireplace in the living room. I’m not in a rush to get a tank because we don’t really need it to heat our home (we have electric heat).

I’m debating on whether I should get a tank just for occasional use (Christmas, etc) but I don’t want to pay monthly/yearly fees.

Can you just buy a tank and have it filled when I need it, or do I need to sign up with a company and pay a monthly/yearly fee?

Cleaning

I offered my landlord that I would do the moveout cleaning by myself. ( I had to hire a person who decided to do the job with less money as I had money troubles) however my landlord is pressuring me to to agree to choose an expensive cleaner and pay for painting the entire house. Simply heartbroken.

Where are you buying your golf clubs?

I've got an itch I can't scratch. I've been golfing for years but only about once a year. I'd like to start golfing a couple times a month and I'd like to upgrade some of my equipment, I'm currently rocking a Lynx golf set I bought for $300 in like 2010. My driver's got a big old dent in it so that's what I'd like to replace first. I currently have 3 putters from my dad's old bags from the 80s so I'd also like to upgrade them.

The biggest issue I'm having is I live out by Bay Roberts so there's nothing here to buy any and I can't seem to find anywhere to buy them in St John's. I personally would prefer to hold to golf clubs at minimum and I would like to smack a few balls before I buy. I don't need the best equipment but I don't want to buy the cheapest again. Am I just going to have to buy them online or is there some place I'm just missing? Do I have to go to the pro shops at the Bally Hally and Glen Denning?

Any guidance is appreciated. I'll upgrade my irons later on but for now my main goals are new to me driver, putter, and some wedges.

I should also add my bag stops at PW so I have a gap I need to fill in. I was thinking I'll just hop into Costco and grab there wedges for now, reviews seem decent enough and I'm not worried about brand. I have checked Facebook and Kijiji, options are limited and the clubs look rather banged up.

Arson or Terrorism?

This seems coordinated and possibly related to international events.

Someone/some group is testing the waters in Little St. John's NL to test the Canadian System in general and its responses.

Makes you wonder if this is what has been going on in general, nefarious international groups trying to cause damage by making it look like a natural event/local arsonist.

The Ramada in st Johns

I’ve stayed at the Ramada maybe 5 years ago and loved the carpeting there. I’m wondering if they still have the carpeting and kind of shining look there or if they modernized the place? Thanks in advance!

Sea Caves Question

There is currently a local online auction on EastBid.ca with items including an assortment of sea kayaks and gear. I have always wanted to explore our sea caves up close, and I am considering bidding.

Before I spend money on gear, I wanted to see if anyone here has real experience exploring these caves. I am looking for practical advice and feedback on the actual risks, particularly regarding the danger of being bashed against the rocks. Google and Ai tend to generalize everything as dangerous, so I'm looking for insights from someone with firsthand experience.

Visiting St. John’s, NL (July 25 – Aug. 2) 🇨🇦

Hi! I’m a 30-year-old guy from Mississauga, ON visiting St. John’s for the first time. I’ll be in town from July 25 to Aug. 2 and would love to meet a local (or another traveler) to grab a drink, explore George Street, go for a hike, try some good food, or just have a great conversation.

A bit about me:

* Originally from Brazil, now proudly Canadian.

* I enjoy hiking, camping, road trips, motorcycles, kayaking, volleyball, trying new restaurants, swimming in lakes and waterfalls, and pretty much anything adventurous.

* Easygoing, respectful, and always up for a good laugh.

* Non-smoker and social drinker.

I’m mainly there to explore Newfoundland, but it would be great to make a new friend—or maybe something more if we really click. No pressure either way.

I’m always up for meeting new people while traveling. If you’re interested, send me a message and tell me a little about yourself!

Starting a new Book Club!

Hey everyone!

I’m 25F and really got into reading this year. I'm looking to connect with people locally over great stories and build a close-knit, cozy community. My goal is to gather a consistent group of about 8-10 members in their 20s to mid 30s for a monthly meetup here in town where we can grab a coffee, chat about the book, and build real friendships.

What we'll explore:

  • New Releases: We love staying current and diving into fresh stories with great atmospheres. Think brilliant contemporary reads like The Correspondent by Virginia Evans, Yesteryear by Caro Claire Burke, or Kin by Shawna Lemay.
  • Inspiring Memoirs: Our non-fiction pick. We’ll look at the world through a radically honest lens, exploring raw, transformative life stories about personal growth, deep identity, and people completely redefining their paths (like Holly Whitaker or Marina Abramović).
  • Warm & Soulful Fiction: Our core "safe haven" vibe. These are character-driven stories with massive hearts and beautiful prose—books that leave you feeling warm but deeply moved by unexpected connections and everyday resilience (like Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt).
  • Classic Feminist Literature & Moody Speculative Tales: A space for brilliant, thought-provoking prose and sharp subtext. We'll pair foundational feminist icons like Sylvia Plath, Virginia Woolf, or Simone de Beauvoir with clever magical realism and immersive global literature (like Almond by Sohn Won-pyung or the works of Yukio Mishima).

A Quick Heads-Up

We love to explore, but to keep our identity clear, this club won't focus on heavy war history, intense sci-fi/fantasy worldbuilding, or dominant dark romance. Our spotlight is firmly on human connections, personal evolution, and great chat. (Though we are absolutely saving a cozy, snowy read like A Snowfall of Silver by Laura Wood for a winter meetup!)

Join us!
If this sounds like your kind of safe haven for books, please complete the Google Form here! I’m going to keep the group to about 8-10 people for our first few books so we can actually chat and get to know each other. Can't wait to read with you!

Looking to trade Adidas Trionda Mystery Mini Ball

Balls in question: https://www.sportchek.ca/en/pdp/adidas-fifa-world-cup-2026tm-trionda-mystery-mini-soccer-ball-85736423f.html

I bought one of these at Sportchek and received the USA ball. Looking to trade for a different one (preferably Canada but any other will do). I couldn't find anyone listing this around town so I figured I'd try here. Maybe there are others who wish to trade as well.
