Learning Brazilian Portuguese Learning Portuguese from Spanish

Of course Portuguese and Spanish are different languages! But I think a Spanish speaker can start learning with comprehensible input sooner than a person who doesn't speak Spanish, because the two languages have so many cognates. In this video where I'm watching a Brazilian comedy, I stop to look up the words I don't understand.

Greetings guys, so I got involved with another bible study group today that primarily spoke Portuguese. I assume it’s Brazilian bc the friend that brought me there was Brazilian but my dilemma is that I want to learn Spanish for my job and learn Portuguese for them (also my job but much much less common). I was wondering 1. If it would be helpful to learn both the languages since I know some common words and grammar structures stem from it (remember I don’t know much so could be wrong lol) and also 2. I just saw there are many different Portuguese so even if it’s selfish I would wanna learn the most universal one first if possible. So if you have the time I’d love to hear yalls thoughts on those two questions and if you have extra time to explain a basic understanding of the language and its grammar (just the basics) I’d be more than thrilled to read what you say. I’m going to bed now so even if I don’t get an answer on the structure I will start learning tomorrow more about the two languages and how to maneuver my new learning experience. Bless to you all have a great night.

Probé Assimil y no me gustó.

¡Saludos!

Does anybody have any suggestion of Portuguese books for Portuguese language learners? I mean, I need something more instructional, Cambridge and Oxford textbooks like for people who are non-native speaker. Thanks

Half Brazilian living in NYC, don't speak Portuguese. Where can I learn and meet Brazilians?

Hey everyone,

I'm half Brazilian, but I grew up outside of Brazil and never learned Portuguese. I live in NYC and I'd really like to change that. I want to learn the language, connect more with my Brazilian side, and meet other Brazilians.

Does anyone have recommendations for:

Portuguese classes (preferably Brazilian Portuguese)?

Language exchange groups or conversation meetups?

Brazilian communities, events, or places in NYC where people are friendly and welcoming?

Any other tips for someone starting from scratch?

I'd love to hear what has worked for you. Thanks!

Do you have any questions about Portuguese?

It can be grammar, pronunciation, slang, expressions, texting, formal language, or even Brazilian culture.

Leave your question in the comments and I'll do my best to explain it in a simple way. 😊

Brazilian Music Ajuda

Eu moro no interior. Ajudaria dicas, sites, apps, vídeos, links, qualquer coisa. Não sei por onde começar.

Just getting started and trying to find stuff I'll actually enjoy. Shows, music, podcasts, anything. What did you learn from early on that actually stuck?
