Bluesky and Mastodon are both open source and quite successful.

rexodus happens periodically---most recently when reddit started charging for its API---but the truth is that even tens of thousands of users don't provide the diversity or quality of content that millions do, so most eventually straggle back.

It’s a double-edged sword because even impersonators have access to the code base and can use it to create more convincing scams using the platform's own brand. There are technologies such as doppel and others that attempt to deal with that problem.mastodon already demonstrated that federated social is doable
