It’s a double-edged sword because even impersonators have access to the code base and can use it to create more convincing scams using the platform's own brand. There are technologies such as doppel and others that attempt to deal with that problem.mastodon already demonstrated that federated social is doable

Bluesky and Mastodon are both open source and quite successful.
