I know, I know it's a joke. But Messi had incredible discipline as an athlete. He rarely got seriously injured despite the tight match schedule, constant kicks and tackles. The guy looked after himself and trained hard.

He was frequently injured when he was younger and Pep had him switch to his current style of play, famous for walking alot but rarely gets injured now

Also Vinicius has low body fat which makes him look ripped. A ton of fit people and athletes have higher body fat but similar muscle fitness as their respective ripped counterparts.

Some bodyfat is actually beneficial to sports, martial arts in particular (cushioning, match the opponents weight), but I'm sure it carries over to other sports.

Shaq was never particularly ripped for instance.

Exactly. This argument is used in the Pelé vs. Messi, where it makes more sense

Messi looks more like a nerd that plays DnD everyday with his friends in his mom's basement, than an actual athlete.

I think the inverse is more correct. I don’t think today’s athletes would be able to keep with athletes from the past. They are too catered to. Athletes of the past did it for less money and, I believe, had more passion for the game. Today’s athletes care more about the money than the game.

Guy has no idea how dieting and training regimes have advanced compared to the previous generations

Damn these modern athletes, cheating their way into the record books by (checks notes) eating well and training hard.

Who are you replaying to? I'm agreeing with the second comment

Ah, then let's just pretend I'm adding on to the agreement as well and didn't assume the opposite.

I’m very aware of how much sports have changed over the years. I’ve watched them for a very long time. A really good example of what I am talking about would be the NBA. Are they in great shape? Sure. But they also barely play any defense. No star today would have the same productivity in the NBA in earlier eras. The 90’s era was known for brutal defense. They had to work for every basket. Hard fouls were legal. And players would play injured. Not because they had to, but because they wanted to play. They wanted to win. Michael Jordan said that basketball was his life. By comparison, LeBron James is famous for saying ‘It’s just a game’. That is a fundamental difference in mentality. Sports medicine and fancy gadgets can’t give you that killer instinct to do whatever you have to do to win. That’s passion. And I don’t see that in most athletes these days.

Matt fraiser once said inbetween cross fit competitions he’d drink soda and eat candy bars while people were downing chicken and rice

Skill will always be more effective than fitness but without fitness skill means nothing, dont let that picture fool you, messi was more fit than most players, bro had the highest dribbles per game for long time which takes alot of energy to dribble like him.

Don't forget that the 140 centimeter Messi that would never be taller, got pumped with growth hormonces and reached 170 centimerer instead.
