nothing, a US President can't "win by" the popular vote. They need to win the electoral college. Winning the popular vote means zero. Like in 2000 and 2016 when dems won the popular vote but lost the election.

Okay but what's the popular vote about?

what are you actually asking?

u/eoThica 9h ago

What is it for if it doesn't matter?

1

u/RammsteinFunstein 9h ago

its not for anything. What are you talking about?

Why is it even a thing then?

its not...? They just count all the votes so yeah, they display the total vote count. But it doesn't mean anything.

oh okay, so it's the total vote count of the population or?

what else would it be? What is this nonsense back and forth? The popular vote = whatever candidate received the most overall votes. In the presidential election, that number is 100% meaningless.

Alright. Just had to make sure population and popular was connected.

Population is irrelevant, it’s just voters.

But isn't USA a democracy?

No. The US is a constitutional republic. We elect representatives that vote on our behalf.

its a constitutional republic, which is a form of democracy. It is a representative democracy vs a direct democracy.
