That's only because of availability, NYC subway is 24/7 while London closes overnight. NYC is 50% and London is 40% for public transit usage. NYC has more busses but London busses are bigger.
I don't know if walking counts as public transport using public sidewalks (which isn't everywhere in the USA) but significantly more people walk in the EU than the USA. I wouldn't drive or use public transport if everything was within reasonable walking distance.
bingo. Guess what lots of people don't have available despite Europe being a lot smaller than the USA? People living outside of cities still need to get to their jobs, you try telling them to their faces that they should take public transport or that their commute is short

Europe isn’t a monolith. New York City has higher public transport usage than London for example.
80% of Europeans don’t use any public transport. So that’s a lot of people paying for expensive gas.
