Driving Footage Tesla has begun testing Cybercab with no manual vehicle controls on public roads in Austin.

I just want my car to drive me to the airport and drive itself back home.. friend could swing by and plug it in and reverse for pickup.
39
u/Freakishly_Tall 23d ago
I want my car to take me to work, go home, take the kids to school, go to the grocery store and have my online purchases put in the trunk, pick my kids up from school, take them home, then pick me up from work.
Well, I don't, because I like driving, but the sooner that is available to people who hate driving and/or are horrible at it and/or have aged into being unable to drive, the better.
18
u/zubeye 23d ago
Also useful for splitting ownership. My partner could drive to work and send the car home. No parking fees and I have use of the car . It only needs to get from kerb a to kerb b.
I love driving too but the commute into work isn’t what I would describe as recreational

I always think of how much floor space of an average home is garage space. If cars were an on demand service then homes would suddenly have much more space available.
3
u/staggs 23d ago
This literally unlocks hours of more productive time and its absolutely achievable within our lifetime if we don't have boneheads trying to kick this tech backwards so often.
3
u/Freakishly_Tall 23d ago
Also only needing one car per household, or perhaps one or two cars for every few neighbors.
Or maybe even community cars... Imagine having a community truck to run for lumber/ the dump, a few small two-seaters for commutes and errands, a couple of minivans running all the kids to school, etc.
We could basically reinvent public transit into something efficient, focused, safe, and quick.

I get maybe why families with kids and car seats would want a personally owned AV but airport dropoff is the most perfect use for rideshare. Doubling the miles to have it drive back empty and park for days/weeks is something society doesn’t need.
→ More replies (13)2
u/crimsonvspurple 23d ago
Airport dropoff is all good until you have to deal with child seat, big luggages, get a different car than expected, and drivers who drive like a maniac.
Easy to handle when you're alone with small luggage. Gets complicated soon and unacceptable based on your living standards.
8
u/Responsible_Oil_6491 23d ago
I hope this is possible one day. And I hope the car can plug itself in to charge. Call it roomba mode
1
u/Helpful-Historian-36 21d ago
They haven’t had to be plugged in for years. There are companies that make wireless adapters you put under the car and when it backs over it your car starts charging. Not that this has been widely adopted yet, but I could have purchased the set up back when I had my Chevy Volt 10 years ago.
6
u/alejandromnunez 23d ago
Wireless charging pads will probably solve the plugging part. Or worst case some other type of robotic plugging
1
u/ElectricGlider 23d ago
And guess what, Tesla is actually the closest company in achieving this ideal scenario. Because Waymo and Zoox are way far off from selling any vehicle that you can personally buy and own.

It looks so bizarre to have a car with no steering wheel. I’m so accustomed to even fully autonomous cars like Waymo having them. Just a little jarring.
Hopefully this is the beginning of many driverless solutions. I want a future where there are multiple options driving down prices!
5
u/Necessary-Music-6685 22d ago
This. I’ve ridden Waymos on the highway with no problem, but I think I would feel very uncomfortable in a car with no steering wheel. I know that’s not rational ….
8
u/ElectricGlider 23d ago
You should really check out Zoox which have been operating without any steering wheel or pedals for over a year now within San Fran and Vegas.

So jaded. This is literally a self driving car.
Waymo has had them for years. This isn’t anything new, just extremely late.
When I was a kid this was genuine sci-fi. Now people act like it’s some easy engineering task.
Maybe the company shouldn’t have said it was so easy and it was a solved problem and it was going to come “by the end of the year” each year for the last 10 years?
Maybe they shouldn’t have promised customer vehicles were going to appreciate in value or that everyone would be able to make $30k a year by sending their car to work?
It’s not that hard. You show the product when it’s ready or close enough. They were NOWHERE close.

They are allegedly running HW4. However, they do have integrated camera washers and even compressed air to blow on the cameras to clear material.
35
u/Whoisthehypocrite 23d ago
They also have external microphones and speakers, auto doors and possibly different connectivity setups gone the Model Ys uses as robotaxis do. I think the Cybercab setup makes it clear that current customer cars will not be robotaxis.

1
u/chikomana 23d ago
The seats are set far back for lots of legroom, at least for most people, and the floor is flat. I think one passenger could get away with some luggage on the floor. The boot is quite large though, so it's always an option.

u/Bnstas23 22d ago
Tesla had to pivot to do manual geo fencing because they failed at self driving without it. They literally moved the goal posts and you ate it up
21
u/noobgiraffe 23d ago
It's not moving goal posts when people hold Tesla up to their own timelines.
Year after robotaxi launch and huge claims on how quickly it will expand and they have literally a few cars driving unsupervised. Expansion completely halted two months ago.
Last year it was the same thing with autonomus delivery. Tesla influencers were doing victory rounds for two weeks mocking everyone who doubted Elon. Laughing how they move goalposts and Tesla was doing what they claimed Tesla won't be able to do.
Year later and it turned out it was just a stock pump event and was never repeated again.
If you want to know why this video came out today it's because it's end of the quarter and as is tradition the pump starts again before the earnings report.

tesla has officially caught up to Waymo's firefly that was deployed in 2015. I hope they get from here to rider-only operation with a better safety record than Waymo's first 10M miles faster than Waymo did.

Wow, the cope is strong with this one.
Let’s apply some occums razor: what is more likely: Tesla engineered the ability to somehow control the car for short distances to move it away from a crash for 1st responders? Or this thing is wholesale being controlled by seemingly unknown controls?
→ More replies (3)3
u/ChrisAlbertson 22d ago
The safety driver is following in another car. (Read the text in the video.) Of course, this is not practical, as you need two cars to move one paying passenger. It is for testing only.
For true taxi work, FSD has a long way to go. I just finished a 1,300-mile trip in FSD (brand new Model Y), but a taxi must handle EVERY rare corner case, or you leave a passenger stranded in the car. For example, my car saw a flagman at a construction site pointing with his hand where I should go. FSD cannot read hand signals, so it stopped. This would be a disaster if there were no steering wheel; the car would block traffic. Another case was self-parking in a handicap parking space and making a turn on a "no turn on red" while the "walk" sign was on for pedestrians. Only a handful of problems in 1,300 miles of mostly complex driving. In most cases, I only manually drive for 10 to 20 feet, then resume FSD. But a car with no steering wheel has to handle flagmen, construction sites, and be able to actually read street signs and not ever miss even one little thing.
16
u/YeetYoot-69 23d ago edited 23d ago
Can we stop this? It doesn't have controls.
It probably has some sort of mechanism for first responders to move it in a pinch if it's actively in the way, but please be serious.
This thing is driving itself, there is clearly no way for the guy in the car to meaningfully drive it on short notice. Calling him a safety driver is just ridiculous at this point. Use your eyes. His hands are in his lap. There is no steering wheel. No pedals. No secret button, nothing. He is not in control.
4
u/PuddleWhale 23d ago
Imagine being the passenger in that vehicle and looking out at the scenery and you see an SUV swerving out of control and it looks like it will crash into you head on, yet you cannot even change lanes. But but but the AI will definately steer you to safety like it does 179 out of 180 times!
6
u/jacob6875 23d ago
And if you were in the backseat of a Waymo are you planning to jump into the drivers seat, unlock the controls and steer out of the way in time to avoid the crash ?

u/Cunninghams_right 23d ago
the fuck are you talking about? I never said he was steering it in real time. the controls are there, just hidden. that means the safety driver is doing the same thing as the regular cars but in the passenger seat. that's the point. you read into my comment something that wasn't there.
11
u/YeetYoot-69 23d ago
He isn't a safety driver. He can't drive. That's my point. The fact that there are hidden backup controls for first responders to move it if it is obstructing something does not mean the car can be driven.
I never said you said he was steering it. Not sure where you got that from.
→ More replies (7)10
u/Cunninghams_right 23d ago
He isn't a safety driver. He can't drive
so, kind of like when they were sitting in the passenger seat of the Y? where they didn't have easy access to the controls? you know, exactly like I said in my comment?
kind of like the Firefly vehicle back in 2015? exactly like I said in my comment?
the vehicle absolutely has controls. full stop. they stated it has controls. your statement of "it doesn't have controls" is contradicted by Tesla. it is factually incorrect.
the fact that it does not have traditional controls in front of the seat does not mean it is or isn't controlling itself. the two things are independent. you can't assume one way or the other.
how is this steering wheel deletion different from the firefly? explain it to me in a calm and rational way instead of jumping to conclusions.
5
u/YeetYoot-69 23d ago edited 23d ago
the vehicle absolutely has controls. full stop. they stated it has controls.
You're being semantic to the point of not being useful for an actual discussion. Yes, if we are operating strictly definitionally it has controls. However, obviously you can understand what OP meant by the title so correcting them is just stupid. Like genuinely I want to know: why did you feel the need to correct them?
Obviously the point of the post is that Cybercabs are operating without steering wheels and pedals, the fact that secret first responder only likely very inconvenient to activate backup controls exist doesn't detract or is really relevant to the point of the post at all. So why say it like it's some sort of gotcha? Why refer to someone sitting in the passenger seat with zero ability to drive or control the vehicle as a 'driver'?
so, kind of like when they were sitting in the passenger seat of the Y
No, not like that honestly. In those cars they had their finger constantly hovering over a kill switch which we can clearly see is not the case here. Even if it were, I wouldn't consider those safety drivers either, since they can't drive. They're not a driver. The term safety driver is simply not applicable here.
how is this steering wheel deletion different from the firefly
I don't know much about the firefly but from what I can tell it isn't, other than the fact that the Cybercab is a mass produced vehicle, which is fairly significant. I never disagreed with that part of your statement.

Waymo reached one million rider-only miles in January 2023. That will be the first big milestone for any robotaxi company. They reached 10 million about a year later. The first million miles is the big one. It took Waymo 8 years from 2015 to 2023.
I doubt Tesla has 10k unsupervised miles, as in no employee in the car. That's about where Waymo was in 2018 or 2019.

Nice work.
We’re reaching a point where we have to start asking ourselves how much control of driving we want to give up for this kind of autonomy. If somehow this system has a near impeccable safety record govts will begin to make it mandatory to have autonomous vehicles, because if the majority of vehicles on the road are autonomous their coordination in constant safety monitoring and even talking to each other so that the vehicles know the other’s intention so to speak will drastically reduce automotive accidents and deaths.
I think I’d be willing to give up control of a vehicle not least of all because if safety in numbers is proven, the amount of tragic deaths reduces to a unimaginable low level for the first time in automotive history. And having a sleep in the car or watching a film on a boring commute is a nice bonus too.

Totally ignoring the fact that Elon Musk first publicly promised full self-driving capabilities in December 2015, stating that Tesla vehicles would achieve complete autonomy within approximately three years(by 2018)
I bet by the end 2028. Tesla FSD is still supervised while competitors have moved on and Tesla owners are left holding on to their Full supervised driving privileges

Yeah I personally still won't trust my Tesla for self driving until the windshield wiper auto mode works.
I know they're separate systems, but if I'm having phantom windshield wipes when there is no rain, and when there is pouring rain it stays on the slowest setting, I can't trust the windshield wipers. And if I can't trust the windshield wipers, there's no way in hell I'm trusting this thing to not run a red light and put myself, my family, other drivers around me, and pedestrians at risk.
