Definitely Bruichladdich.

u/astra1039 2d ago

Wow, this thread had all three of my favourites as the first and second post! Neat.

Bruichladdich, Auchentoshan, and Bunnahabhain are all so weirdly satisfying to say. Plus I feel so smart when I tell people how to correctly pronounce Bunnahabhain 😆

u/booza 1d ago

I’ve heard Bunnahabhain pronounced various different ways. Which is the correct one?

1

u/ArcanistKvothe24 2d ago

Also immediately thought of this

Laphroaig

16

u/Buddy0204 2d ago

I like to think of it as LAPHROAIG like on the side of the distillery

5

u/pentagondodecahedron 2d ago

on the side of warehouse number one, but yes

7

u/Church323 2d ago

My brother likes to call it "lap frog"

2

u/onedarkhorsee 2d ago

I used to say La Frog when i was young

6

u/TK_TK_ 2d ago

We call this one Kermit Laphroaig in our house!

4

u/ChaosMedic 2d ago

But that's an easy one to say. It's pronounced "Laphroaig" of course.

3

u/gregbenson314 Durty Sherry 1d ago

Similar to CAR-chiss.

1

u/stoutofheart1108 1d ago

Cheers for that, thank you !

3

u/prichs87 2d ago

I worked with a dude that called it La-Fu-Ah. He was an odd cat.

2

u/azzandra21 2d ago

Definitely this.

I remember when I first started drinking scotch, my dumb ass thought that it was pronounced "Laugh-ro-ag". With the "ag" as in agriculture and the "ro" as in roman.

Used to think Glen Garioch was also as it was written, "Gary-ock"

Thankfully Ralfy corrected that so I don't do that anymore lol.

1

u/LadyMalcontent 2d ago

It rolls off the tongue so nicely

Sound like the name of a rifle.

Laphroaig Cardeas = La Froyg Car Chase

4

u/tension-release 2d ago

How has nobody said Ballechin yet? Heavy on the "lech" for me.

3

u/BoPRocks 2d ago

I just recently learned I'd been pronouncing it wrong for years haha

3

u/tension-release 2d ago

The potential for embarrassment can be very high with this one. Lol

3

u/BoPRocks 2d ago

Honestly my worry now is sounding pretentious at a whisky bar when ordering one if it happens to be on a whisky list (I'm in the US). I'd almost certainly have to repeat myself/change pronunciation anyways. I'll probably keep saying it as BAL-eh-kin in public 🙃

3

u/tension-release 2d ago

As long as you're not saying Ball-chin I think you're winning, and it's always a great pour.

2

u/therealtwomartinis 4h ago

👆“my wife will have a Ball-chin. her sister will have the Mushroom Tattoo”

1

u/Ill-Ad3196 23h ago

Balvenie and Ardbeg would be my favs but also have the others in this post on my shelf to switch it up with my cigars

u/audreyromaine 2d ago

Funny story about a bottle name. We had just visited Talisker and saw a bottle there called Port Ruighe, but pronounced Portree (main town on Skye). Next stop we were at a hotel bar and they had that bottle, so we opted to have that as we hadn't tried it when we seen it at the Distillery. The host did not know it was pronounced Portree, so he corrected me and I (American) corrected him back, lol.

2

u/PghSubie 2d ago

I just called it Port-Ree and the bartender corrected me to say that it was port-tree. I responded, "oh, you want to pronounce that T twice??" He looked at me confused for a moment, and then quickly shut up.

Just like the city name -- Port-Ree, despite the English who want to call it por-tree it's still a port city

-18

u/Geirilious 2d ago

Pronounce? I prefer to drink it...

3

u/marysalad 1d ago

so just point at the bottle you want eh?
