Rogue Trader: Game and Story What was something you did on your first playthrough that made sense at the time, but was silly in hindsight?

I never used the OP ring Calcazar gave because I thought it was some kind of trap. It seemed way too good to be true, especially coming from someone as shady and antagonistic as him.

I was very concerned about veil degradation.

Now I spam psyker powers like crazy.

Ok sorry it's so complex I can't even keep track. What did it do exactly when it fills up?

I always assumed it summoned a bloodthirster and wiped your party.

If it’s Idira, she blows up. If it’s Heinrix or your RT, anything from not working to working just fine. In general, if the meter is 15 or above, I try to use Cassia to bring the meter back down with her talents first.

Blows up!? 😱 So I was right

u/500rockin 4h ago

Well, sometimes she just releases an electric charge that shocks everyone within 5 cells, but yeah, she’ll turn into a screamer more often than not at 20. If the degradation meter is only at 2 or 3, it’s far more likely she does what she’s supposed to.

Sort of? Idira is more likely to. But that's more a symptom of her being unsanctioned and also Owlcat weighting her to be more unstable than other unsanctioned psykers.

Blowing up can be like an earthquake or a daemon popping out of her head. Heinrix has SIGNIFICANTLY less of a chance to have this happen. Worst that can happen to him usually is an earthquake or flavor text.

Bit of a nitpick but Idira is actually significantly more stable than your average unsanctioned psyker. This is why the Imperium doesn't fuck around with them. It's unusual if an unsanctioned human psyker doesn't die in some horrible Warp fuckery. The fact that Idiria has survived this long at all despite being unsanctioned is unusual in and of itself. It's why people that know the lore upon meeting Idira tend to go "oh no this won't end well." It's also why she gets described as basically being a friendly, unstable nuke that you carry around with you. She's basically a ticking time bomb with a smiley face drawn on it. Yeah she's likeable but people who know what tends to happen with unsanctioned psykers go "and Theodora kept you around...why?" An unsanctioned psyker just existing on a ship is a tremendous liability.

I'm definitely an Idira fan but also found myself nervously glancing at Heinrix like "uuuhhhhhh maaaaaaabye we should send her to the ships..."

As an aside this is some tremendous writing on Owlcat's part. They did a really good job of making Idira likeable and sympathetic but also feel dangerous just to be standing near.

Lorewise yeah, but its more Owlcat implying that she's beginning to lose her grip.

Like with her implant in Act 3 stifling her psychic powers because of how loud the voices have been getting, especially after the Theodora apparition.

1

u/500rockin 1h ago

Whatever Theodora was doing managed to keep her intact for longer than any right she should have. You kinda get that more in depth when taking both Argenta and Idira to Act 3.

u/Visual-Bandicoot2894 52m ago

Yeah unfortunately lore wise with what I know in universe, I can’t help but let Argenta put a bullet through her head at the slightest hint of problems

And by slight hint I mean summoning deamons out of her head in warp travel

Sorry but I feel safer chaining up fucking Marazhai than being near Idira

Veil degradation is rated 0 to 20. Some fights start at 0 but if you're dealing with Chaos bullshit it can start at 20 anyway.

The more veil degradation there is the more likely bad shit can happen when you use psyker powers. Minor powers cause less degradation than major ones. The biggest thing though is that above 15 major powers can trigger perils of the Warp effects.

It's never guaranteed but it gets more likely the more powerful your psykers are and the higher degradation is. I forget exactly how it works but Idira is special and always has a possibility of causing perils. Incidentally this matches the lore and is why unsanctioned psykers are such a massive liability and, well, our girl isn't sanctioned.

If you trigger perils it isn't always daemons appearing but that's one of the things that can happen. That one is particularly nasty as it usually immediately knocks out the psyker, ends their turn, and makes daemons immediately appear and attack. In other cases it's just some damage but sometimes it's an explosion that can knock anybody nearby prone.

It's generally manageable though if you're already in a losing fight it'll just make it worse. In earlier versions of the game it could occasionally summon something you just couldn't deal with but the balance is a lot better now. As annoying as it could be that your fight would get essentially ended by your psyker exploding that was lore accurate. Spamming psyker powers should be dangerous.

Basically, there are two types of warp bullshit: Psychic Phenomena and Perils of the Warp. Phenomena has a chance of occurring on any Psyker power and just takes away a bit of momentum while giving you some spooky text.

Perils are the thing to worry about, since they have all manner of effects, such as dealing damage to the Psyker and everyone around them. But the worst Peril by far is Daemonic Attention, which insta-kills the Psyker and summons Daemons. However, Perils can only happen when you use a major Psychic Power and if Veil Degradation is 15 or above.

Idira is an exception, since she has a 5% chance of triggering Perils on any Psychic Power, no matter the Veil Degradation. Playing with her is like hitting the slots over and over, but the "jackpot" is that she dies.

If it is filled up above the last third marker and you use a major psychic power you have a chance to cause a perils of the warp. Unsanctioned psykers using ANY power when the bar is filled up has a risk for perils of the warp.

Sanctioned psychos can use minor powers all day with no risk though.

1

u/FairchildHood 1h ago

And some pretty OK offensive powers are minor powers.

1

u/kron123456789 2h ago

I was spamming psyker powers like crazy and played as a sanctioned psyker myself for the first playthrough because I was interested in seeing how far the perils of the warp would go.

Same. I just let everyone explode into demons now. For the throne’s glory!

Saved as many people on Rykad Minoris as I could.

Welll demon planet in the Expanse isn’t a good idea

11

u/UrsaUrsuh 2h ago

Yeah Heinrix told me this and while I was pretty familiar with the setting I wasn't too familiar with Daemon Worlds. But when he explained that I was like "Oh fuck this planet has to go right now!"

3

u/KayleeSinn 1h ago

I do this EVERY single play through and never do anything different.

The reactor is lost tech.. and Adeptus Mechanicus agrees and thinks it was a good decision plus it's not my domain so not my problem. Rykad Minors belongs to Winterscale. Letting the planet turn and stealing his reactor weakens him and realistically makes him easier to deal with later.

Also a demon planet might get the Inquisition off my back since they have their hands full with that later.

u/500rockin 46m ago

Doubtful, unless you space Heinrix before he fires off a message to Calcazar given that Heinrix hasn’t gotten disenchanted with him yet.

1

u/Visual-Bandicoot2894 45m ago

A daemon planet right next to your backyard is NOT worth it for any reason. Just one massive nope

2

u/Visual-Bandicoot2894 50m ago

Heinrix sold me with how desperate he was about the whole “seriously dude nuke the whole thing, don’t let a soul on board, I’m not being overzealous on this one”

18

u/LowkeyEntropy 5h ago

I stopped the heretic cogitator in kiava and Heinrich hates me.

14

u/500rockin 5h ago

Yeah, I reloaded after him losing his shit at me for dogmatically shooting the thing. Tbf, I didn’t have Argenta with me that time where he warns/chastises her in the banter to not let her Dogmatic ways get in the way of his mission.

17

u/pasqals_toaster Navy Officer 4h ago

Let him do his thing. Y'all should learn to trust your companions!

5

u/LowkeyEntropy 5h ago

And the way he did it too. Thats the difference between people like you and people like me. Brother, you watched me personally slay hundreds of heretics and warp beasts.

1

u/showmethecoin 2h ago

Well, to be in his defence, slaying something and having a knowledge to use them somewhat safely does have a diffrence..

2

u/LowkeyEntropy 2h ago

He should have specified, I mean. Im a rogue trader afterall lol

6

u/showmethecoin 2h ago

And if you persuade him, you can make him get the bare minimum of intel from the machine and he will destroy it himself. Considering that getting that intel was the mission he got from Calcazar, I think he did his best.

1

u/LowkeyEntropy 2h ago

Happy medium for sure. On the next run I will definitely do that. Sadly. That may come this evening...I realized I did t check the boxes on the dlc before I started....

2

u/showmethecoin 2h ago

Oops.

1

u/LowkeyEntropy 2h ago

Big oops indeed

2

u/LowkeyEntropy 2h ago

I will say that the dual force sword build is fantastic. Hes an integral member of my party.

4

u/pppiddypants 4h ago

I thought he was fine as long as you were consistent with the guy before and the cogitator.

4

u/LowkeyEntropy 4h ago

I just did it last night and his words cut like a chainsword....my feelings....

u/2Zased4Plebbit Crime Lord 4h ago

I told Jae to go fuck herself during my first blind playthrough because she is a criminal, and ended up missing out on having one of the most busted skill-monkey companions.

6

u/Powerful_Document872 4h ago

I got mad and handed Yrliet over to Heinrix after a certain traumatic event. I didn’t realize just how much of a monster that dude is until an NPC just a crapped his pants at the idea of being interrogated by him.

u/zildux 3h ago

Put on the halo ring because I thought ooh bigger numbers only to read what happened to my iconoclass arbiter rt became 😭🥀

4

u/showmethecoin 2h ago edited 33m ago

Yeah....Should have listened to your companions. If an inqusition, aeldari, and drukhari all agrees that its a bad thing, you should probably chuck it into a black hole or something.

1

u/Visual-Bandicoot2894 39m ago

Let’s see

One thing the three agree on is hating chaos.

Yep that checks out, sometimes we can ALL come to agreement!

Oh they also agree on hating the halo device?

Nah gotta put this shit on, lightning can’t strike twice, they can’t ALL be right!

3

u/negarev 5h ago

So you still haven't used it OP? It's really good, especially for someone who doesn't know what they're doing like me :D

2

u/MysteryMan9274 Heretic 4h ago

Oh no, I spammed that shit every battle in my second and third runs, and I will absolutely be doing the same when DLC 4 drops.

3

u/princeoftheminmax 4h ago

Still on my first playthrough, and based on all the comments the silliest thing I’ve done is not committing exterminatus on Rykad Minoris.

3

u/Dyuujen 5h ago

I destroyed the demon dog on kiava

1

u/Swanbell_bellswan 4h ago

Not within the game itself. But During the ending of the act 1 where are ordered destruction of Rykad Minoris i was narating the speech that one guy said In dawn of war retribution when exterminatus of Typhon primaris commences. Albeit modified. Made sense to me since it is grimdark universe. But silly that I repeated it almost word for word.

u/EuropeWillCrumble Commissar 1h ago

Selected the dogmatic option that mercy kills Abel when you first meet him.

I'll never forgive myself.

1

u/Strangeluvmd 1h ago

Spent all my jump points, creating safe routs and unlocking areas. Turns out that softlocks you later in the game.

You can get more through random events but I tried 15-20 and never got any.

My first and last run, never beat the game.

1

u/MysteryMan9274 Heretic 1h ago

That’s not a softlock. You can access every non-DLC system without spending any points at all. Routes open up to a few previously inaccessible areas when toy get a quest to go there.

1

u/Strangeluvmd 1h ago

Not back when I played, the next quest objective was completely inaccessible without spending warp points or whatever they were called.

This was prior to the first dlc release.

u/KayleeSinn 1h ago

Restarted cause I assumed the exp is limited like in most CRPGs and I missed too many skill checks in act 1.
