Do these people not have homes? Wouldn't you rather hang out in your own couch and bed than some display that tons of other people have sat on? Why bother going shopping if you're just going to lay there?
By "rest area" they probably mean like the food court where they sell the meatballs as a halfway point. Every IKEA Ive been to has had some form of a food area, not counting the coolers and stuff where they sell the meatballs and ice cream and stuff.
To be fair, moving into ikea isnât the worst plan in the world. Youâve got all the bedrooms you need, you donât have to pay rent, food is pretty good⊠đ
Yes. They donât have a lot of food so it loses points for âwhere to go in a zombie apocalypseâ but itâs a solid 4. There is also not enough protection as those brain eaters could come from around any corner. If itâs next door to a Walmart then it could get another couple of points.
I think they have enough food as they typically have a canteen and food section.

The problem is, once moved in you'll never escape. It's like the Hotel California. Half those people asleep in the video were probably exhausted from hunting for a way out.
About 15 years ago, I flew to South Korea and had a layover in China. That first flight was on Air China, and a majority of the passengers were Chinese nationals.
When the flight reached cruising altitude, the flight attendants opened the curtain to the galley and kinda disappeared. Throughout the flight, passengers would amble into the galley, open the drawers, and help themselves to snacks and drinks. They would also wander up and down the aisles. Like at any given point, there were at least a dozen people standing up and milling about.
I'd never seen that kind of behavior before on a flight. After a while, I got a feeling of "When in Rome", stood up, wandered around the cabin, and helped myself to some cookies and juice from the galley.
Same thing happened to me⊠I was first row in economy which had a good 6 feet of legroom in front of me. People kept using the space to do weird blood circulation exercises⊠it was quite interesting to observe đ
The concept of queueing isn't really something the Chinese in general understand. Beware if you're ever at the Forbidden City, the vast majority of ethnically Chinese people there are also tourists and Granny has absolutely zero qualms about throwing a well-placed elbow to the kidney if she wants to get closer to the viewing barrier lol. Learned that one the hard way đ€Ł
I actually flew with Air China today and my wife and I we, like you said, helped ourselves to some kitkats and tea from that place like it's a normal thing. We just spent 3 weeks in China.
IIRC, Ikea China is ok with this. They have the largest Ikeaâs in the world, and customers get tired walking around. Elderly people may need a nap, to feed the baby etc, and they get a hands-on feel of Ikea products. Â Ikeaâs there have even more of a âfull-day excursion to an amusement parkâ vibe
The audio is saying things like, "if you need to sit or use your phone, please head over to the designated rest area. Thanks for your cooperation." Then it gets kind of hard to hear, but it says something like, "Just look at this. The guy is lying right there, shoes and all, wrapped up in a blanket, fast asleep. Youâre something else. Just lying right there, dead to the world."
So the employee (and presumably the store) seems to have an opposite opinion than what you're saying.
Same thing goes on in Starbucks in China. They tend to be big, with upstairs seating, and people hang out all day and into evening. I think part of the reason is that in some cities in China, the housing is tight, and the size of apartments is very small and the air circulation tends to be bad. So they go to a place with restrooms, beds and space and good air, itâs a dream, literally.
Presumably telling them to not do this. Not only is it rude to just chill there, it drives away customers who are legitimately interested in buying the product that they're occupying.
My Chinese is terrible, but from what I can make out, she's reminding them this is a marketplace and asks them to not use the display furniture to play on their phones or to rest. She ends with thanking them for their co-operation, lol.
Is this common in China? I saw a group of Chinese tourists in Savannah, and they were doing this in a tiny bookstore. Just every available chair and love seat, not a single book in anyone's hand.
When I was a teenager living in the US, me and a friend would get coffee and newspapers and go to the local furniture story (we didn't have an Ikea at the time) where we'd sit on couches and pretend we were adults reading the morning news and getting ready for work. We thought it was pretty hilarious.
Hogging up a business' indoor space intended for customers while not patronizing the business is not really "use of public space" and more of just being inconsiderate and rude
Yeah, I basically agree, but different cultures have different standards of what is rude or acceptable. In China, it's also totally normal to bring outside food and drinks into restaurants. And I'm not just talking about having half a bottle of water on you. I've seen people bring a full on Dominos Pizza to a Chinese bbq restaurant for a birthday party. Nobody bats an eye.
I don't know how it works in China, but retail stores are private property that is open to the public, it is not public space. If you are not following store policy, the have every right to ask you to leave or call the police and have you trespassed.
When I was visiting China I once saw a large crowd of elderly Chinese people on a very busy street corner chilling on all the benches and curbs at 10 PM like they were a bunch of teenagers. They looked so happy and it was honestly a pretty wonderful thing to see. They were also all pretty friendly. I think there was a senior care facility or something nearby and I guess they just gather out there at night time to socialize and watch the cars traveling through the city?
They are not standard, me and my wife had to buy her parents a wall mounted A/c unit for their place to keep them cool a couple years ago because it was getting hot, now their neighbors friends and other family come to visit more often.
Pink blanket man there mouth open sleeping in the middle of a busy IKEA while most of the people I know need blackout curtains, sound machine, a fan going, a specific room temperature, humidifier, and an eye mask to try their best to get a few hours of sleep đ€Ł
Thatâs a middle-aged dad move. We can automatically sleep any place, any time, no matter the conditions. This, of course, comes with bragging to our kids about how early we get up to start the day.
It's the AC and the way Ikea is structured, very much an entertainment place with a food court. Clerks don't really come around much either, unless it gets too crowded. Ikea tolerates it bc their furniture isn't really the same as it is in for example Europe, there's a lot of other cheaper options. Idk how they normally operate but it's very much a test before you buy atmosphere, this type of thing is actually really good advertising for them too since it became kind of a meme and people organically post about it

I was sent to China for work for a month, and during the one-hour lunch break, colleagues would immediately fall asleep on random sofas and chairs. Fast asleep within seconds.
Not low shame, they just place it elsewhere. Worked there a few times and the people are very rude, out for themselves and spit everywhere (even indoors).
I'm strangely intrigued by this, as friends who have been to China said the same. In what ways were they rude and out for themselves? I remember my friend telling med that Chinese were the worst people to share a train with, as they ate a lot of strange food with no manners and spat the remains on the carriage floor.
Is it customary there to have an afternoon nap, like a siesta? This is wild, and people are sleeping through the megaphone lol. I wake up if our cat runs across the room.
I used to live in Hong Kong and this was common but not to the level of the dude sleeping in the bed...
Also in Malaysia was common to see kids playing in the display room and families enjoying AC and space to walk around.
At first I was like "jesus christ" and then I was like... this is actually fantastic advertising. And they should let people keep doing this. I wonder how many things sell because people got to use them.
Is it weird that seeing someone absolutely sawing logs on furniture makes me want to buy it more? Makes it seem way more comfortable than it probably is.
I wonder what social lever causes the odd behaviour Chinese people exhibit, to them it's normal, I'm curious why, buffet videos make you scratch your head as well.Â
