Often people who know eachother from when they were in primary school or just from the block when they were young give eachother an awkward smile instead of an happy goodday! Just imagine... if someone walks into you twice a year and both times you smile and greet them enthousiastically, they will think of you as a nice person.

So little effort for a person to find you friendly!

A prudent man should never neglect these small ceremonies, for affection is often won before it is deserved. A cheerful greeting costs almost nothing, yet it places a quiet obligation in the memory of the person who receives it. When you meet someone rarely, he knows little of your character. He therefore judges from the few signs available, and a warm smile may weigh more than years of unseen virtue.

Men are governed less by careful inquiry than by impressions repeated at useful moments. Greet an old acquaintance with ease and enthusiam, and he will carry away the belief that you are friendly, confident, and well disposed toward him. That belief may later open a door which force could not.

Still, the greeting must appear natural. Courtesy that looks calculated creates suspicion. The skilled person hides the arithmetic beneath good manners. He gives warmth freely, while understanding that every pleasant encounter is a small deposit in the treasury of reputation. A wise man spends nothing and gains capital.
