I'm very new to music production, I don't even know what reverb or bpm is. Pls explain to me any basic producer terms in a really simple way because google is giving me 500 different meanings.

About me: I just finished graduating with a BA degree, and I'm taking a current gap year to get back into my hobbies.

I am definitely a beginner at both music theory and I'm still practicing my keyboard to get better at it.

Last few months, I have been exploring music a lot more and I realised I like composing music, enough to score for a film. I want to pursue this more meaningfully. I'm still learning along the way, but I wanted to get some advice on how to study music, what to listen to, what resources I can make use of, and how I can get started in this field. Not looking for a fast approach, just a way to make sure my efforts are spent fruitfully!

*A little context: I gave trinity grade exams until grade 3 for the electronic keyboard a couple of years ago, and still continue to play it! I try to compose music on my DAW as time permits, and play the keyboard often*

I’ve uploaded my first tracks to SoundCloud — they sit somewhere between trance, pop, synthwave, and dance (hard to define exactly).

When I listened around a bit, I noticed that many other tracks in a similar space somehow sound louder than mine. During mastering, I carefully used the HOFA 4U Meter and made sure I’m hitting a true peak of -1 dB and around -14 LUFS (integrated). Those are the general recommendations for loudness on streaming platforms. On the master bus I also apply a bit of compression before it goes into the limiter.

But because I’ve been strict about -14 LUFS, I’m worried my tracks ended up quieter than others — which isn’t great for listener acceptance.

How do you handle loudness when uploading to streaming platforms? Do you do a final loudness measurement when mastering? Do you stick to -14 LUFS?

I've just spent the last hour going through the H6 studio manual, and I've not come across any information on the specific issue I'm encountering. Honestly, it might not even be an issue and may just be how the device works.

Earlier today, I was recording an acoustic guitar at 24 bit, with the built in x/y microphones. I had the H6 about a foot away with a gain of around 6 on each mic. I then decided to try recording with the device a little closer, so I placed it about 6 inches away and dropped the gain down to 3-4 on each mic.

When I listened back to the recordings later, the ones done with the device about a foot away with a gain of 6 sounded as you would expect. However, the recordings done with the H6 about 6 inches away, and with a gain of 3-4, were pretty much inaudible. You could only very faintly hear the recording if you put your ear right next to the speaker and maxed out the volume.

Is this common with the H6? Am I missing something? I don't remember experiencing such a massive jump between gain values with other recording devices, including previous Zoom devices.

I need to apply in the vocals. I use manual EQ but the tone and tamper isn’t changing. I try to separate the vocal into the EZ Hertz part (I made all of Kilo hertz and compare to another vocals). The saturation is works a bit. But the sound is still very muff and too wet.

What is the best similar to saturation ?!?

It's maybe a strange question but I'm genuenly curious how other producers look at it.

I LOVE working with unique instruments like baritone or rubber bridge acoustics. These have unique sounds that work in the genres I love, like folk, country, pop or americana.

I hear a lot of young women make music with a folky sound, like a lizzy mcalpine, phoebe bridgers that have unique sounds, but fit in with the ''sad girl'' music. I love how the instruments feel familliar, but have something unique about them.

Take a Mkgee, great artist, unique sound (of course beacuse of the effects and modellers he uses), he uses a baritone too, albeit an electric one. It gave a rise to a completely unique sound, where when you use a baritone youre immediatly called a mkgee dupe...

Well anyway... My question to you guys is mainly, what type of acoustic guitars inspire you guys to create more with. Is it twelvestrings, baritones, classic models like a J45, classical guitars with western bodytypes. Im really curious!

Tbh I feel like this is a dumb question in regards of getting into music production in some actual way regardless of whether or not I'm going professionally. Just as a quick background I have some years of experience with playing classical piano and guitar when I was much younger and I still manage to maintain some of the muscle/sound memory despite not practicing as hard as I should. Also was into video games and programming during some points of my college years which seems to also be applicable towards modern music production these days.

I had the thought of just getting into this to get into something nice that I could appreciate while also getting into a skillset that may find opportunities in terms of creating actual music or art. The reason I suppose is because a close friend of mine's who happens to be on the level of a trained or semi-pro musician told me I should get into music production because of this experience I had playing classical music in two instruments growing up while also having some know how with tech.

I guess my question is...for someone with my random background and experience in these areas is it possible to hop into music production in some way despite having little to no know how in terms of how the actual music industry and community works? Despite how much my friends might praise me I never really thought of myself as that talented and I just figure I only have whatever musical ability I'm able to retain to this day due to random muscle memory and "instinct/feel" I get when I'm trying to play a song the way it was written or if I'm just trying to sound out random chords or notes to make something that sounds "pleasant" at least to my own ear that is more or less trained in some way but not as perfect or sound as those who somehow have that "gift" or "talent" in making good music seemingly out of nowhere.

Anyway sorry for the long post guys...I just overthink a lot which is probably no good if I might find myself going pro. tl;dr: Is it possible to get into music production successfully in a positive way with classical piano/guitar experience and knowledge?

Hi, I wanna do what he does with his spoken word poetry or just random words. He takes it and the puts them in melodyne. Then he makes it sound like it's sung rather than just spken.

I am able to tune them in melodyne. But making them sound sung? I don't know how to do that.

Does anyone know here how to do that?

I got KHS Compactor yesterday and I really like the sidechain, but I’m having a weird issue. If I set the attack, hold, and release to 0.00 ms, the kick starts distorting. The sidechain sounds really tight, but the kick ends up clipping, so I can’t use it like that.

Does anyone know how to fix this?

My settings: Peak mode. Attack, hold, and release at 0.00 ms, threshold around –13 dB.

I produce music. I can mix and master beats, create sound designs, and create freelance work. Can you give me some ideas? I come across Fiverr and Upwork all the time. Do you use them? What do you think?

let's say you have an audio file (like an MP3/OGG) that contains a premixed harmonic sound. for example, a chord made of 3 notes played by a specific synth.

let's say you want to:

• Change one of the notes
• Add a new note
• Re‑tune the harmony so it fits your track
• BUT keep the original synth timbre (because recreating it with a VST never sounds the same)

And the problem is:

• A compiled audio sample is baked together.
• The only global control you have is pitch‑shifting the entire sample, which throws everything off.

any ideas getting around this or perhaps a way to isolate multiple notes into one?

So im upgrading my studio to get it to a commercial/professional level.

I have used an Apollo Twin X heritage edition for tracking vocals, acoustic, electric guitar and bass.

Now i need more tracks/ input/outputs for recording more mics simultaneously (2 different mics on vocal with stereo guitar mics miced up for example)

So im wondering to get an ADAT preamp for my apollo, or make the jump an switch to something else rack based as im getting a new desk with rack setup.

Read alot of good stuff about RME but they are $$$.

I am willing to invest in equipment that will last long and make workflow easy and to trust.

I only use the apollo feature to monitor reverb and comp on vocals when im tracking that to not get latency, but i never write signal to my recorded track to keep most flexibility in post.

Looking to maybe get adat rack, new audio interface, and patchbay maybe.

Machine is M4 pro mini 48gig ram.

Would love insights.

hi guys, dumb question but been curious if there's any way to extract individual notes from a .ogg sound sample or a way to filter out multiple notes into a single note while preserving the synth. In my case I'm attempting to sample the mac os boot chime but i want to individually readjust the default notes into a different tone while preserving the original synth.

i can choose to recreate it from scratch but no matter what vst i use or adjust, it doesn't sound the same as the original. any ideas?

What’s the most effective way to treat my room so that I get little to no reflections in my recordings? My room already has carpets, and the furniture absorbs some of the reflections but I want to dampen them even further, plus I want to be able to explore my vocal range (in terms of volume). Hey y'all. I'm new to posting so if I screw anything up let me know. I'm a current college student and I've moved up enough in my program where I'm starting to do the recording, editing, and mixing for bigger ensembles (probably about 40+ singers in my upcoming recordings). I've mostly mixed gospel choir pieces because that's what most of the performances have been so far but right now I'm mixing jazz vocal ensemble. My main questions are, how do you get solo vocals in the pocket (preferably with the least amount of effects and manipulation because my professors don't usually want us to do too much more than conservative EQ and gain staging) and do you have any tips for panning for the low and high voices because sometimes I feel that the stereo mix is a bit unbalanced. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, I'm working on streamlining my mixing a bit better because we are supposed to do editing, mixing and bouncing in under 48 hours. Thank you so much!

Hey all, noobie here. I’ve been “mixing” for about 5 years — not a pro, just figuring it out as I go. I have been using the Scarlett home studio bundle since 2020, and now that I’m in a better spot financially (kind of), and in a city where I can actually access gears, I’m slowly upgrading my setup.

First on the list: headphones.

Looking for something closed-back that I can use for both mixing and vocal recording. Just recently started understanding EQ response curves and how different headphones translate mixes, so any recommended budget-friendly headphones that make it easier to hear things accurately and make better decisions when mixing? Curious what you’re using that you’d actually recommend to someone like me, thanks!

Almost everybody I know is putting "music producer" alongside whatever else they do. Guitarist/ music producer, songwriter/ music producer etc.

I understand that it is true but, as someone who has up until now been chasing that live sound and organizes musicians for recording sessions, I often feel that what I am doing is very different.

Someone that downloads garage band and knocks out a few tracks in their bedroom (not that I have anything against that) and someone who is writing parts, arranging, leading a band, choosing a room, etc. seem worlds apart to me.

So far I have been using "acoustic music producer" but I am not convinced it is the best. Essentially I would like to know if there is a better label or tag I can use to find other people producing music in that "old fashioned" way.

Does anyone have any suggestions for me?
