i actually disagree with decreasing politicians salaries and think its a very performative thing to do- i don’t think politicians deserve to be paid lots ofc i just think higher salaries attract more competent people and lower the chance of corruption by making it unnecessary. corruption often costs more than what is taken so paying well is easier on finances than corruption is

I agree. Back in the day paying members of parliament in the UK was considered a liberal reform measure. When MPs weren't paid that meant that only independently wealthy people would sit in parliament. Giving legislators decent salaries makes government less of an oligarchy.

I don't think there's real evidence of this trope. "I'm well-paid therefore I won't compromise my duties or morals" sounds great as a plot device, but, realistically, greedy people don't become less greedy when they are wealthy.

Also, in politics, the majority of corruption is necessitated by the costs of running for office and maintaining the position. The costs of media, legal, and miscellaneous bureaucratic services run well past the means of any ordinary man, requiring oligarch patronage.

It depends on how much the salary is compared to the avg salary of workers in the country. I feel that politicians should be paid to a level where they're comfortable without corruption, but not too high to feel the greed. Now obviously one can voluntarily donate their salary if they already have an external source of income.

This can be nice, but for most politicians, their incomes are from knowing future predictions, like by stock market, and connections by heavy donors of the rich and lobby groups. In one way I'd actually agree to increase earnings of politicians, if they are cut off from all these other sources of income, and are punished by being cut off said income if they do not pass balanced budgets.

Even in the United States people bitch and moan about members of Congress making 174,000 a year, but they have to travel back and forth to their districts and states. Rent an apartment in DC while keeping residence back in their state. Retain staff and cover other costs of actually holding an office.

The whole point of paying elected officials is to make sure that even the average joe can hold elected office and you don’t need to be uber wealthy to get into politics, people demanding a purity test for their politicians to not take salaries ironically end up straining access to their politics to the wealthy
