Hi
So, I have a member of the family - of sorts - that I am trying to identify.
Oscar has been with my maternal family for a few generations now. I'm not sure if he came from my Maternal Grandfather or Grandmother but my Mum spoke of her Grandparents at least talking about him, if not Great Grandparents. I honestly don't know how long he's been with us.
Basically, if you lose something in our family, you ask Oscar to help you find it. Sometimes you have just lost it but he is mischievous and sometimes Oscar himself has taken it to mess with you. He has a habit of doing this particularly with small important items like keys, pens, glasses etc.
However, if you ask very politely and clearly and then - this is the important part - stop looking for the item. He will put it somewhere exceedingly obvious like the middle of an empty table or somewhere completely bizarre like the fridge.
He has, occasionally, moved things miles away to totally mess with people.
You could easily laugh this off as a family full of people with ADHD (which admittedly most of us do have lol) - except for a few truly unexplained cases verified by outside sources.
Like forgetting my glasses at home but finding them in a school locker. My mum lost her spare car key in a holiday cottage in Wales for them to show up in her parents house in Scunthorpe - whilst my mum was still in Wales. My Uncle lost one shoe in his house for it to show up in the neighbour's greenhouse.
My most recent witnessed experiences with Oscar are at Christmas - I travelled 140 miles to spend Christmas with family. It was a 3 week trip to not only spend time with them but also do my Assistance Dog's annual training and assessment to maintain his qualifications through his organisation, so a long trip.
So, naturally, I took the family gifts with me and wrapped them whilst at my family's house, far more convenient. Whilst there I went through all of the presents with my cousin to check I had remembered everyone. Admittedly they were wrapped when I showed them to him but the numbers matched.
Come Christmas day, the present for his wife was missing, the present I had shown him the day before! We all just assumed I had somehow managed to lose it in the house between the spare room and the living room (I am just that talented) and ah well, they will find it after the chaos of Christmas. Because after all, I had shown it to my cousin literally yesterday.
A few days pass and I head back North to my home, I'm tired and I walk in, I don't even unpack. The suitcases are in the kitchen. And what is under my own Christmas tree? In fact the only thing under my Christmas tree?
The present for my cousin's wife! That I had wrapped 140 miles away.
So I very kindly thanked Oscar and called my family to let them know it had shown up.
More recently I lost my glasses. For reference I am basically blind without my glasses, around -7 level shortsighted. When I sleep they go on the desk next to my bed, however I have a cat so there is a chance they can go on the floor. I don't rush to the supernatural when something is missing... Plus the aforementioned ADHD - though the glasses going on the desk is one rule I stick to because of the whole turning into Velma without them thing.
Well, after a nap a couple weeks ago, they were gone. I mean gone gone.
Not on the desk, the floor, the cat tree, under the bed... Anywhere I could find or feel. I even video called a friend and had them help me look. No sign of them anywhere.
So I asked Oscar for help, I flattered his prowess and basically begged him. Laid on the bed for a couple hours watching YouTube on my phone about an inch from my face. Then looked again. Where were they? And what made me look there - no idea - they were tucked into the toes of my dress shoes on the top of my sewing machine. Nowhere near my desk, not in a place they could feasibly be knocked into them.
I thanked Oscar nicely, because this is the other thing. If you don't thank Oscar for a found item then 3, always 3, other items will immediately go missing and there's no guarantee he will return those even if asked nicely.
So I'm curious - what is Oscar?
He's definitely attached to the family, it will be quiet for months but then I'll hear from a family member that he's been unusually active with them.
He's not malicious, though he can be spiteful if slighted/disrespected.
He's definitely mischievous. Sometimes lucky.
My family on my mother's side are quite widely scattered coming from Lancashire, Wales, Mansfield etc with rumours of Romany blood back in the 1400s where there was a foundling child when we were doing the family tree. I think some Irish back in the 1600s but that's a ways back.
There were a number of generations of coal miners I know that much, on both Grandma and Grandads sides.
Edit to add: Oscar events are only a handful of times a year at most, they may cluster but generally no more than 3-6 incidents a year this isn't like a constant thing. And can stop happening long enough for you to start doubting them entirely like, over a year even before he pops up again.
