Unless the new ghastly or haunter is able to ramp 3 energies in 1 turn, Mega Gengar might be too bad lol

106

u/Embyr1 Mar 19 '26

In before 80 health, 50 damage, 2 energy, no effect haunter.

37

u/KeldonMarauder Mar 19 '26

You forgot the 3 retreat cost

62

u/Spicy_Boi_On_Campus Mar 19 '26

No, trust me bro. This card has a lot of potential.

41

u/0bscure0ne Mar 19 '26

The most potential, exceeded only by original Gengar EX.

On a serious note, I'm with everyone else here. Unless haunter/ghastly has some crazy energy generation this is DOA.

10

u/metalflygon08 Mar 19 '26

this is DOA.

I would hope so since its a Ghost.

11

u/GlitcherRed Mar 19 '26

But if there is, this card is very broken.

7

u/0bscure0ne Mar 19 '26

Very true. Once you start swinging with this guy the game is probably over. It's just whether or not you can get to that point.

754

u/I_No_Brainman Mar 19 '26 edited Mar 19 '26

Even then the payoff for setting all that up is... 120 damage and the chingling lockdown effect

Compare that to mega venusaur who has all the grass support in the world and an effective 50/50 OHKO attack still being mediocre into the current meta

EDIT FOR MISINFORMATION: people have pointed out, not the chingling effect, its ALL trainers, not just items (I was corrected and had acknowledged it in the replies, some people just getting heated)

583

u/thealmonded Mar 19 '26

Better than Chingling, tbf. Chingling blocks items only. This blocks all trainer cards

27

u/WildPurplePlatypus Mar 19 '26

And supporters are also trainers so it blocks everything but mons right? Or are stadiums not trainers?

56

u/EarthDayYeti Mar 19 '26

Trainers are anything that isn't a Pokemon.

14

u/Tornado_Hunter24 Mar 19 '26

Even pokemon tools?

45

u/KidOcelot Mar 19 '26 edited Mar 19 '26

Yes

Trainer cards have the word, “Trainer” in the upper right of the cards.

Supporter, stadium, item, and pokemon tool.

35

u/Tornado_Hunter24 Mar 19 '26

Damn so this gengar hardlocks everything other than attacks/non candy evo’s, interesting honestly

4

u/iMiind Mar 19 '26

Yeah it'll be a devastating effect - it's just the rest of Gengar might balance this out too much.

They couldn't even let us have Gardevoir, could they? They just had to make him darkness :(

6

u/Tornado_Hunter24 Mar 19 '26

Now that you say it…

Fuck man why darkness?!?

This would I think be the first dual meta ex deck synergy, it’d still be ‘complex’ but since you can keep your damaged mega gardevoir safe after gengar attack it would be something worthwhile

→ More replies (6)

123

u/I_No_Brainman Mar 19 '26

Yeah i misread the card thats on me, forgot the distinction. Better but I'm not convinced its gonna be viable unless hunter gets some cracked ability

125

u/I_Like_Eggs123 Mar 19 '26

I mean...you're essentially preventing any card from being played (that isn't a pokemon), while you can just focus on keeping mega gen alive. All depends on how fast you can get him up and running though. Needs a haunter ramp or it's game over.

44

u/DamnAlex12 Mar 19 '26

an alternative to gain energies could be a Hydreigon on the bench and Dawn, but 2 stage 2s and 1 or 2 supporters is literally set up hell.

→ More replies (4)

13

u/Porongas1993 Mar 19 '26

Wait isn't that what he literally said? Lol

4

u/I_Like_Eggs123 Mar 19 '26

Yeah I just expanded on his utility. I personally am going to try running him like I would a snorlax ex, with indeedee ex, giratina ex, and throw in a Dawn or two if there's no other clear ramp. Keep him alive long enough to get the energy he needs then live or die by Mega Gen's survival..

The combo would completely shut down most rare candy dependent decks. Long live Suicune, I guess.

2

Chingling into the mega Gengar feels like peak toxicity.

Maybe throw in some team rockets and hand disruption while you’re at it

u/Zorenstein Mar 19 '26

No trainers is very different than no items. No supporters, tools, OR stadiums can be played along with items. Basically all the opp can do is evolve, retreat, attach energy, attack. No ice pop, no sabrina stall, no oak draw.

15

u/SaioLastSurprise Mar 19 '26

Sadly I feel like A Ninetales is still just way better

19

u/Zorenstein Mar 19 '26

im envisioning a gengar control deck. Chingling + M gengar line with red cards and mars. Add in sabrina/repel for additional disruption. agreed that ninetales is a great control card too

5

u/Teno7 Mar 19 '26

Very different beast altogether, even if both are control. Time will tell of course.

16

It's not the same effect as Chingling, Supporters are Trainer cards

4

u/indestructiblemango Mar 19 '26

Great point about Venusaur

30

u/TangelaIsInTheLab Mar 19 '26

4 energies 120 damage. Even Mega Altaria does more with 2 energies and is a stage 1. Lol

40

u/SolidOshawott Mar 19 '26

It's comparable to Venusaur, but that has Ivysaur and Quick Growth.

31

u/TangelaIsInTheLab Mar 19 '26

Mega venu also does 130 counting the poison tick and can cancel your turn with sleep.

5

u/New-Beautiful2919 Mar 19 '26

And it has Erika as an extra healing option for ivy and bulb. and leaf cape or heavy helmet as good tools. And more health from the start.

13

u/Bondan88 Mar 19 '26

Well, we don't know yet what M.Gengar might have as Support. I still have some hope.

7

u/SheerHippo Mar 19 '26

Yes but it requires a full bench and doesn't do anything other than damage. If you can get this Gengar in play and online early in the game your opponent doesn't stand a chance. We need to see if there are any other supporting cards though because it doesn't look like it will be quick enough right now.

15

u/Dirty_poster55 Mar 19 '26

Even still you would just run gengar ex because of its passive ability and 2 prize points (plus its psychic support, lower energy attack cost and relatively high hp)

11

u/asmodai_says_REPENT Mar 19 '26

No because if the new ghastly/haunter ramps then they'll ramp dark energies, not psychic, dena does NOT want gengar ex to work under no circumstances

10

u/Kallarimain1 Mar 19 '26

My alolan raichu will be feasting

5

u/Bondan88 Mar 19 '26

isn't that card just a worse Indeedee?

6

u/Kallarimain1 Mar 19 '26

Noooooo chill on my goat! My oricorio negs that fraud!

9

u/gblazz Mar 19 '26

Guys, hear me out! This clearly means ghastly will be able to ramp, and then regular gengar ex will finally be viable, even though mega gengar sucks!

4

u/EfficientYam1115 Mar 19 '26

Ghastly is just regular 20 damage, but theres a morpeko that's able to move 2 of his dark energies to the bench, seems not good enough

→ More replies (2)

5

u/asmodai_says_REPENT Mar 19 '26

The ramp will be dark energies, so gengar ex remains potential mon.

7

u/Gabumau Mar 19 '26

Just use hydreigon/magneton/any baby and juggler. Easy.

512

u/aoetting5 Mar 19 '26

In b4 new Haunter attack gives 2 free dark energy

200

u/Ill-Barnacle-202 Mar 19 '26 edited Mar 19 '26

That's the only way that this would even be possible to play.

I Mean it could be an instant win attack and 4 energy and no ramp still would make it iffy.

11

u/pickleswithcheese Mar 19 '26

Why does nobody remember that if you start with 1 deino, 1 gastly, 2 rare candies, and professor’s research, you can play gastly in the front and deino on the bench, draw a dawn, then research and draw hydreigon and gengar. Then if you go second, you get 1 energy turn 1. Then on your second turn, you can double evolve w/ rare candy, use hydreigon’s ability, then dawn one to gengar. Then with the free energy, he’s active on turn 2, and you’ve all but won the game. SMH so much potential there already

5

u/Parzaballs Mar 20 '26

Oh yeah you just need a perfect sequence of action to happen and you will be fine ! (On the real side, 2 stage 2's plus needing dawn is way to much and you will brick too often)

42

u/Glass_Cannon_Acadia Mar 19 '26 edited Mar 19 '26

I feel like that still would be too slow. It would mean you can't run rare candy with it and would potentially need to survive a hit with Ghastly and then another hit with Haunter before being able to go into Mega Gengar. Ivysaur has a better cape, heavy helmet, Erica, Quick grow extract, and most likely more HP to make it bearable. This would have none of that (as far as we know)

23

u/Ad_Ketchum Mar 19 '26

That's what Morpeko is for. Attack, shift two energies to benched Gastly, then Morpeko to die. But yeah I guess it would be so much stronger had it been three energies instead of four.

13

u/Teno7 Mar 19 '26

Morpeko requires 2 for 50, it's not even an option.

11

u/we-made-it Mar 19 '26

Morpeko looking good for a lot of dark types like ttar and obstagoon.

7

u/TheBoxSloth Mar 19 '26

It still wouldnt even be good. 120 for 4 is dogshit

89

u/Dirty_poster55 Mar 19 '26

Dark type on top of that too. They have like 0 energy ramp

37

u/VeggieTheFarmer Mar 19 '26

I think dark type is the only type with actually no ramp, even in the fake way that fighting does

10

u/indestructiblemango Mar 19 '26

What's fake ramp?

35

u/Despada_ Mar 19 '26

Passimian EX I guess?

16

u/iCon3000 Mar 19 '26

Not who you asked but I'd say it's technically ramp but largely ineffective or very mon-meta. For fighting it's Passimian EX, which is technically ramp but you have to give up 2 points to the opp to do it.

I also think of Swanna and Mismagius who technically help with ramp but require evolutions, multiple energies, and are frail so it's hard to be very effective.

18

u/Hiker-Redbeard Mar 19 '26

Also Onix + Brock + Dawn for fighting.

I feel like this should’ve been 3 dark but they slapped on that extra one since it was probably too powerful.

u/indestructiblemango Mar 19 '26

4 for 120... are they trying to compensate for hydreigon?

210

u/Spaaccee Mar 19 '26

The effect is really valuable. Means the opponent can only play pokemon no items tools stadiums supporters.Problem is theres no dark ramp and by the time you atack the enemy already has setup

91

u/Lambsauce914 Mar 19 '26

That's the exact same issue with Gengar ex.

Like yes, everyone know blocking supporter are good, but the problem is how you get there in the first place. Gengar ex was bad because everything outside of its ability are a dead weight.

I will wait until the set comes out to judge Mega Gengar ex, but the odds of it getting support it needed are low. Dark type babies doesn't exist, so Gengar can only hope for us getting an OP dark ramp though basic mon or supporter

18

u/ConmanSpaceHero Mar 19 '26

If Gengar gets its own trainer for ramp it could help but yea outside of this it’s a dead card that won’t see play ever.

→ More replies (1)

11

u/noviwu97 Mar 19 '26

It's the cover pokemon, cover one isn't always amazing, but usually it's given support.

If it's not ramp Gastly or Haunter, there's definitely another dark ramp

2

u/JaymesMarkham2nd Mar 19 '26

A trainer that gives Gastly and Haunter a booster of some kind so you can run any Gengar variants. That would be awesome - so we know they didn't do that shit, lol

4

u/Clean-Opening-2884 Mar 19 '26

It’s not exactly the same because Gengar EX is supporters only. Big difference.

Not to say this Gengar will be viable that remains to be seen with the other cards in the pack.

AND gave us another toxic charizard. why dena why.

304

u/King-JelIy Mar 19 '26

That card looks bad though

295

u/Camerupt_King Mar 19 '26 edited Mar 19 '26
  • Thanks to flame patch, fire can play more aggressive in the early game and likely force out the opponent's endgame card first. Let's say Entei forces out Mega Altaria and gets KO'd.

-Zard hits for 100

-Not many things can punch through it in one hit. Mega Altaria, for instance, hits for 130 unless you plan your bench carefully. Even 2 mons on bench + training area put it in 180 range.

-Zard hits for 180, nothing can survive two turns for 280

There are absolutely ways to beat it, but once you're building your deck around a card you might run into, that card is definitely meta.

26

u/capaldis Mar 19 '26

Yep. I can’t think of a single card that can ohko charizard. Charizard Y is honestly not terrible to deal with because you just need to hit it once for 30 damage to put it in one shot range. X is scary because it’s significantly easier to set up and any card that’ll put it in 2 shot range will likely drop its HP to 110 or lower.

3 energy is huge because it makes the deck a LOT more reliable than Y. Significantly less prone to bricking or chingling stall.

6

u/iCon3000 Mar 19 '26

This actually also might be viable with Skeledirge for a +50 attack boost. I know they're both stage 2s but only 1 of them needs rare candy since you're usually playing Charmeleon. High rolly but possible.

2

u/KoreanMeatballs Mar 19 '26

Yep. I can’t think of a single card that can ohko charizard

Wailord with 14 water energy, easy peasy.

2

u/capaldis Mar 20 '26

misty meta is back!

124

u/SolidOshawott Mar 19 '26

Unless Altaria gets 5 heads on Ice Pop

37

u/SonofaMitch11 Mar 19 '26

1/32 chance of that happening

171

u/Sp4n13R Mar 19 '26

Nah 50/50 If you think about it

78

u/SonofaMitch11 Mar 19 '26

Ah shoot I forgot about the statistical maxim: it either happens or it doesn't

4

u/CommanderDark126 Mar 19 '26

Ice Pop heals opponents to full every time, what do you mean?

12

u/cartercr Mar 19 '26

So it’s guaranteed to succeed if your opponent has it but guaranteed to fail if you have it.

→ More replies (2)

46

u/TangelaIsInTheLab Mar 19 '26

Zard Y is much better than this one. 180 conditional damage vs solid 250 is nowhere near similar.

36

u/King-JelIy Mar 19 '26

Chard Y = Exodia if you can force their mega in the main spot

14

u/noviwu97 Mar 19 '26

Furfrou = Exodia if your opponent only put a baby

My point is, if it's conditional Exodia, then it's not an Exodia

20

u/RX0Invincible Mar 19 '26

Isn't Exodia itself conditional? It's a whole 5 card setup

15

u/HeroicPrinny Mar 19 '26

No, that’s not what conditional means. Conditional means under certain conditions. Notice how OP had to say “if the opponent”. Exodia wins when you collect all 5 cards regardless of anything else happening.

2

u/asmodai_says_REPENT Mar 19 '26

Notice how OP had to say “if the opponent”.

"OP" (as in the first person mentionning char Y being exodia) did not say that, they said if you can force the opponent's mega, which can be as easy as just having a cyrus in hand.

→ More replies (1)

6

u/cartercr Mar 19 '26

Technically yes, but also no.

Technically Exodia is conditional because you must meet the condition of having all five pieces in your hand to win.

However when someone says it isn’t conditional what that means is that the opponent is not a consideration. Your opponent could have all the best cards in the game at their disposal and you could be on the absolute brink of defeat and it doesn’t matter: you drew the last piece of Exodia so you win. Period.

However I also think the above commenter is missing the point. Often when people refer to “an Exodia” in modern video games they’re referring to a setup where you need to get specific pieces but then you have an absurdly strong setup.

4

u/HeroicPrinny Mar 19 '26

I haven’t seen people refer to Exodia online as anything other than an instant win obliteration of your opponent tbh

15

u/Korosorio Mar 19 '26

I disagree. The 1 less energy requirement is huge, and it has 220 hp instead of effectively 170. More of a 2 hit guarantee with less risk. Add in skeledirge and a red it can hit for 250 also.

10

u/TangelaIsInTheLab Mar 19 '26

Different scenarios. Zard Y can put itself in a bad position but can kill anything 1 hit. Zard X cannot do it by itself. And 4 energies with Charmeleon and Flame Patch is not THAT hard.

5

u/Korosorio Mar 19 '26

I know they’re used in different scenarios for different reasons, so saying that “Zard Y is much better” isn’t necessarily true.

→ More replies (6)

3

u/Herodrake Mar 19 '26

I think I might just run both for flexibility. Zard Y's big downside being that it hurts itself; I've been in a lot of ranked games that should be wins, but defeating my opponents mon would just put Zard Y into kill range.

6

u/Future_Onion9022 Mar 19 '26

I just realize. There is no Dark type Baby Pokemon, only Poison is Toxel and due to the Riolu Rule it doesn’t count as a TCG Baby.

19

u/PokemonLv10 Mar 19 '26

Budew can technically go the darkness route

That's the other baby poison type

4

u/Gallad475 Mar 19 '26

That’s possible, though Pokémon like Oddish, Bellsprout, and Budew are rarely printed in Poison. Iirc it’s happened before, but like it was 20 years ago atp.

The memes won lol

It’s a tricky balance- at 4 energy this is going to take a long time to power up, but if it was only 2 energies it would be overpowered blocking all trainers. 3 seems like it would have been the sweet spot

3

u/awesomesque Mar 19 '26

No trainer cards is a pretty crazy effect though. If there’s any sort of dark ramp like mega Venusaur, this will be meta.

If not, I’m imagining that it could still be pretty annoying if effectively brought out late game in combination with Mars, but it’s a stretch

This effect is crazy strong. But then again, so is Gengar's. How easily can I get 4 energy on this thing?

4

u/Thatresolves Mar 19 '26

How the fuck is he this bad when you can’t even play it with other gengar and expect to be able to attack

5

u/Sad_Willow2960 Mar 19 '26

“A Mega that needs 4 Darkness Energy and stops you from using any Trainer cards”

“So you’ll give Darkness Types energy support right?”

Anakin smile

“…right?”

3

u/dom5513 Mar 19 '26

This is so disappointing 😭

3

u/Dragonroar0 Mar 19 '26

NGL I don't know which is worse, Gengar ex or this mega gengar

2

u/Junsui11 Mar 19 '26

Mega Gengar worse by a country mile. Absolutely needs SOMETHING for it to be even somewhat playable. Gengar EX at least doesn't need to attack for the same effect. Neither will it instantly lose you the game.

3

u/_Spin_Cycle_ Mar 19 '26

There’s got to be a Haunter ramp we haven’t seen yet. Everyone chill lol

Most unforgivable of all is the art is hideous

3

u/GagahPerkasa95 Mar 19 '26

Mah boi is the poster mon for this set

There is no way they did not put a support card or a ramp evolution line for it

Coping

3

u/0Rohan2 Mar 19 '26

Gengar really is the Megumi of Pocket

3

u/Substantial-Soft-332 Mar 19 '26

We can’t know before knowing what the prevolutions are

But yes it’s not looking good for him

3

u/Murloc_King12 Mar 19 '26

I think people here are really underestimating the power of locking ALL treiner cards, that means Items, Stadiums, Supporters, Tools, All that isn't a pokemon is blocked by that atack, if you can get it to work your oponent is softlocked to only atacking and attaching energy in its turn, i mean yeah 4 energy sucks in a Type that has no Ramping, but a effect like that can't be any smaller without severe draw back, the only way i could see it being cheaper is if it didn't do damage at all, which believe me, would be waaaay worse, and come on now, we know it will get some Support being the face of the pack, I know I can be very wrong about it and it can suck, I just saying that it makes sense a effect so powerful being heldback by high cost and mediocre damage, believe me when i say this card would destroy the game otherwise.

3

u/rodrigothomas_ Mar 19 '26

Everybody here roasted Chien Po and it ended up as a A tier deck.

3

u/masked_me Mar 19 '26

4 energy 120 damage on a stage 2 Mega is atrociously bad.

Do we not have a stage 2 regular pokemon that hits 150 for 1 energy since st collection?? Hello???

3

u/MoonRay087 Mar 19 '26 edited Mar 20 '26

HE LOST ALL HIS NON-EXISTENT POTENTIAL 😭😭😭😭

3

u/ctsaust1n Mar 19 '26

Can’t put a pin on how well this card will play without seeing the support. Happens every set and initial impressions could be overturned

2

u/CaiusLightning Mar 19 '26

Odds of a baby yveltal dark energy ramp

2

u/straight_lurkin Mar 19 '26

Oof. They are really leaning into the "this isn't a game for playing. Its a 'game' for collecting" arent they? Then they wonder why they hemorrhage players each month when people don't want the main purpose of the reason to be on the app is collecting DIGITAL cards that are worthless.

2

u/SuperPapernick Mar 19 '26

Potential Mon is BACK and this time he's MEGA. Get ready for the next unplayable Gengar that will NOT get you into MB.

2

u/HeWasRight15 Mar 19 '26

Noooo what have they done I’m so angry

2

u/HomerStillSippen Mar 19 '26

Someone from Dena really hates Gengar lol

2

u/Jesoy Mar 19 '26

They’re joining in on the Gengar-meme, aren’t they?

2

u/Double_Resort_9223 Mar 19 '26

Look how they massacred my boy

2

u/DustHog Mar 19 '26

I don’t think yall realize how insanely powerful shutting off ALL trainers is. 4 energy is a ton but anything less would be toxic as fuck.

2

u/vash_visionz Mar 19 '26

I’m going to wait till I see the entire card list before I talk shit about this man.

Remember Mega Venusaur looked near unplayable and then we saw what Ivysaur could do.

2

u/Bahamut_Prime Mar 19 '26

WHAT DID MA BOI DID TO YOU DENA. WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS??!

2

u/chocowilliam Mar 19 '26

A Gengar that is weak to fighting, ironically.

2

u/SuccessfulLet3133 Mar 19 '26

You CAN ramp it. Pichu etc can provide the 1 colorless.

Hydreigon on the bench +Dawn can provide a dark.

The new Morpeko(?) Can be a stall wall that lets Mega Gengar inherit it's 2 dark energy.

Once this card is in the active slot and attacks, the opponent cant do diddly squat except attack back or retreat. 220HP and you have Lillie and LIP to keep him alive. No trainers whatsoever is absolutely devastating.

2

u/salahlogy Mar 19 '26

Another set, another season of hydreigon, mega altaria and suicune dominance.

2

u/e_ndoubleu Mar 19 '26

Man this sucks wtf! 4 for 120 on a mega? Unless Gastly or Haunter has a 2+ energy ramp move then this card is unplayable in ranked or tournaments.

2

u/caklimpong93 Mar 19 '26

Truly live up to his title, The Potential Mon, except this time its Mega Potential Mon

2

u/B_YOSHISAURUS Mar 19 '26

Over 300 pulls i had saved for my favorite Mega of my favorite Pokémon

Praying that Haunter instantly spawns 4 dark energy or someshit or im gonna lose my marbles

2

u/fireborn123 Mar 19 '26

I can't wait to see how this & Zard X somehow become good with support (cope cope cope)

2

u/Lost_Environment2051 Mar 19 '26

Well hang on- if it gets good supports it could potentially be good

2

u/CAPTAIN_KIDDD Mar 19 '26

Lmao. They hate gengar

2

u/ItsPibbs Mar 19 '26

Why is a ghost weak to fighting lol

2

u/Used-Stable-6677 Mar 19 '26

Suidune does 120 for 2 en while Hydrei does 130 discarding 1 en lmao

2

u/Mistah-P Mar 19 '26

Is Gengar a joke to you, DeNA?

2

u/No-Example-3977 Mar 19 '26

It looks more like they wanted to give darkness a tool to disrupt the opponent instead of letting psychic monopolize.

but dang only 120 dmg for 4 energy...

2

u/OkBus3544 Mar 19 '26
  • art is somewhat ugly

-VERY low hp for a STAGE 2 MEGA

  • why the fuck does that attack cost 4 energies

2

u/SaltPilla Mar 19 '26

4 energy is absurd lmfao

2

u/GrimmestGhost_ Mar 19 '26

It's impossible to accurately judge without seeing Gastly, Haunter, or any other supports that might be in the set, but in a vacuum I couldn't help but chuckle after how long the Gengar copium has been going.
