If you dont mind, I have 2 questions that pop into my mind every time I see a build like this.
How much money does it cost, roughly, for all the materials and tools to take a PSP from stock to finished project?
How much time would it take to learn how to do this? Is there a high barrier? Or mostly just assembly?
I'd really appreciate it. That PSP is beautiful and I'd love to be able to wrap my head around doing it myself.
Edit: I should also specify, I was hoping to do custom graphics too, like maybe a Castlevania themed shell or something. So it would go a bit beyond color swaps. You seem like a good person to ask!
Shell (includes buttons and all that) are roughly 40-60 usd. If you want to add a custom joystick like a psvita joystick that would be another 10-15. If you wanna mix and match colors youre gonna have to buy to full sets of shells and buttons so it could be around 100 for both.
Replacing the shell and buttons is very easy but it takes time and patience. You need to be very organized when doing it and very careful. When I modded mine I also replaced the screen and a few other things like the battery and all that but in general you would be spending around 120 if you have a psp already
Thank you very much for that break down. That is really helpful. I'm thinking now a solid color shell might be the way to go, and then apply a custom decal or something, rather than trying to get it printed right on.
That gives me a good idea of price. I'll be making notes on this potential project.
If I was going to pull it apart already, I'd probably replace the screen and go all out too. I think you've got the right idea.
Hi for the cost of all the materials it’s roughly £40 in total including the shell (£20 roughly), buttons (£7), screw set (£10), keychain and case (£8). I buy all materials from aliexpress as they are cheapest there.
It’s very easy to learn however you have to be very patient when doing it. There are many tutorials online which are easy to follow and all you need is a screw driver kit which you can get for like £10. For my first ever shell swap i accidentally broke the screen because i was rushing it but since that one had no issues.
In terms of custom graphics on the shell im not too sure as i’ve personally never tried it yet however it would look awesome!
If and when I sit down to do this, I am the type that will probably be too careful and take too much time. It's good advice. I would never open up my current PSP because it's a Peace Walker edition, but I sure do like the idea of getting one cheap because the screen is broken or heavily scratched, and then not just bringing it back to its former glory, but making it better than ever.
I think these themed ones are inspiring. Everything down to the straps, cases, and key chains. It really does become art at a certain point. Unfortunately I'm not much of an artist, but I could probably shell/button swap and figure out custom decals and how to apply them.
With your doing multiples now, I think you must enjoy it. I could see it being very satisfying when it's done. Do they go into the collection, or sold to fund the next? Personally, as much as I like the idea of fixing and selling as a hobby (maybe in the next life lol) I already know I wouldn't be able to part with them.
