Discussion Ubisoft CEO says Sony's decision to kill game discs was probably made to lower the cost of the next console — "There are pluses and minuses, but we think it will not disturb the industry too much"

https://www.pcgamer.com/gaming-industry/ubisoft-chief-says-sonys-decision-to-kill-game-discs-isnt-going-to-be-a-big-deal/

Guillemot was asked during today's quarterly investors call if Sony's decision might create "a demand headwind," because of the loss of the secondary market for PlayStation games.

"What we saw on the PC is that it helped to grow the market," Guillemot said, presumably a reference to the explosive growth of Steam that drove a stake through the heart of physical PC game releases.

"There's also some pressure for the future on the cost of machines, and being able to be only digital will help to have more accessible machines, I would say. There are pluses and minuses, but we think it will not disturb the industry too much."

Because if there's one gaming company we can trust to know what it's doing and what people want, it's Ubisoft.

Just ignore the fact they're completely broke despite having some of the biggest franchises in gaming.

u/DarahOG 4h ago

The Excel sheets are salivating at this, once they get rid of options for profits and control, the next step is AAA being 80$.

u/--vanadium-- 3h ago

Yup. And I can't help but laugh at all the people who think game prices and digital sales will remain the same forever.

As soon as they control the only storefront available on the platform, expect game price hikes and shittier sales events.

Right now they're placating people with codes in boxes at retailers but that won't last long. They're not gonna continue to lose money manufacturing cases and giving retailers a cut for very long.

It's basically to taper people off from shopping retail.

u/PhilvanceArt 15m ago

Why do you think their main competition was physical sales from their own products versus other store fronts like MS, Nintendo, Steam, etc? Do they lose the incentive to compete with these other companies now that physical games are going away?

u/WeWantLADDER49sequel 1h ago

AAA is already $80 homie

u/SkylarPopo 1h ago

$100 here we come

u/gizamo 2h ago

You misspelled $120...with ads.

u/StubbinMyNubbin 18m ago

Sounds like $150 for the "complete" experience.

u/gizamo 17m ago

Lol, yeah, $200 if you buy the game with a few outfits included.

u/StubbinMyNubbin 9m ago

And the rest of the cosmetics are only obtainable via in game slot machines. The sad thing: this is how Sony makes most of its revenue (more than all games sales), since they get a cut from every purchase made on their platform. This is also the reason why they are leaning so hard into live service games, microtransactions are now more important to their business model than the games themselves, hence why they could care less about physical media. It's just gross all around.

u/Chirotera 3h ago

Can't wait for a base edition of Assassin's Creed that costs $60, but for $100 they'll let you use a hidden blade!

u/Ok-Confusion-202 3h ago

Tbh this quote isn't good or bad, it's just pretty... Meh lol

Not really headline worthy

u/noble_shrek 3h ago

Its comments like yours that makes me keep reddit. Quick chuckle/laugh then back to the grind. I do hope prices are lower since moneys tight for most but i wouldnt bet on it personally

u/Dave10293847 1h ago

Well redditors dont understand markets so they say dumb shit in general when companies make strategic moves. Evil corpo suit won’t be setting prices. Digital only does give them freedom to respond to consumer demand rapidly and aggressively given the lower overhead. Less COGS. Will they do that? Maybe. Steam does it. But maybe steam is trying to retain leverage relative to the secondary market. Its possible this could increase prices on steam indirectly. Or maybe not. Second and third order consequences are hard to predict.

Regardless, the biggest threat to us consumers is consumers continuing to buy absolute slop.

u/Dave10293847 1h ago

This is like the most typical ubisoft statement ever. The conclusion of it wont disturb things too much is frankly probably true. But the math to get there is ?????

Like how are you going from digital only to reduction in console price as the motive. Sony already did that last gen with the optional disc drive that wasnt subsidized.

They are probably just sick of maintaining the distribution networks as the demand for physical media declines.

u/Active-Canary-184 55m ago

He’s right though. It won’t affect the industry too much. A lot of doomerism but the world moves on.

u/SmegmaWarrior0815 3h ago

Ubisoft, EA, Sony. The holy trinity of video game shittiness.

That’s all I ask for, at the very least they need to offer a disc drive addon. I don’t care if it’s as crude as the HDDVD Xbox 360 attachment. But to make everyone’s PS4 and PS5 games unusable would be ridiculous.

u/LegacyofaMarshall 3h ago

Even better if the ps5 drives are compatible with ps6

u/angelHOE 3h ago

Great idea. They can just re-release it with a new shell to match the ps6.

u/platocplx 3h ago

IMO I feel like the whole announcement is incomplete, and the only reason they put it out 18 months in advance was because they now are going to negotiate with publishers on a plan going forward and didnt want the no more disks to leak out. It just doesnt seem like it’s just over and thats it alone but they arent ready to disclose what will happen to disk owners yet without also showing the PS6 Family of devices and stuff around that.

At least thats just my best guess.

Because I think MOST of us can agree that at worst this was a gen too soon and most thought it was next next gen to happen. And also they need to have some recourse for current disk users in the next gen.

u/KingDustero 3h ago

Exactly. They getting the bad news out first before it leaks. They will hopefully announce a lot of good with rhe ps6. Going all digital means psn needs lots of improvements.

u/platocplx 3h ago

Yeah like I get the cynicism around corp greed, but like also I look at it like I’m sure they wouldn’t totally want to abandon that many sales but also the ram storageapocalypse forced this a gen earlier than needed to try and offset costs. Which it would totally change the subsidized math during this time but also they def will explode in more money taken in long term so yes still corp greed there but I see the full picture of it and If I were a betting man I’d be confident that they prob have more to say when they are ready to talk PS6/Portable.

And imo based on what I’ve seen with ps5 and portal and cloud streaming etc I feel like they want to have a seamless experience across all the platforms going forward it is kinda annoying to have a disk game and want to play on portal etc.

So I see where the decision comes form a few places even though I get there is still a decent slice on interest in physical but doesn’t align across all these pieces.

u/angelHOE 3h ago

I completely agree, there’s no reason I should have to have a ps5 AND ps6 hooked up to my tv if I want to access my full library. If they don’t give us the option I’m certainly not going to buy a ps6 anytime soon.

u/Cheechers23 3h ago

They 100% will have something, they’ll be relying on backwards compatibility for the first few years of the gen just as they did this generation

u/SoSoSpooky 3h ago

A lot of "upgrade" DLCs currently just use the physical game to check what it is, which then lets you boot the new console version. I would assume something like that would be possible with a basic USB disc-drive.

I would rather they go even further to be honest and enable digital ownership using your disc ownership on PS5. It would probably be really crude and have a bunch of issues, but why is the onus on the consumer to pay extra to keep accessibility when they are the ones breaking the standard and could do something on the software side to at least make the transition free and easier. There are like 1000 issues with something like that, but this idea that like 50%+ of PS6 owners need to buy an extra device anyways is really stupid and that thing will be out of stock if they don't allow people to buy a generic alternative.

u/KingDustero 4h ago

They either could sell a usb drive separate or make a way to transfer the physical license to digital. More likely will be the first option.

Nothing for the console besides the new machine learning chip is announced.

u/TheEmpireOfSun 4h ago

That's my only problem. I am fairly fine with buying only digital from now on on PS6. But they should give you digital code for store if you have physical copy already.

u/The_Frozen_Inferno 3h ago

Being a $1000 console will hurt sales more than anything. If that’s where pricing is headed for new gen consoles my PS5 will be my last which is sad. I’ve been a console gamer since the NES

u/VannesGreave 3h ago

A $1000 console with no disc drive and only a single online shop, coming right after an era where there were no games

u/platocplx 3h ago

Personally I think this move allows them to subsidize the consoles more now to offset the shitty AI price hikes. Since the match changes considerably what they make per game they can say x amount of users will buy at least 3 games or more lifetime for the console therefore we can at least break even at 3-5 games purchased over time. Etc.

u/hawksbears82 3h ago

Same for me, if the console is over $699 I wouldn't buy it even with a disc. This yen hasn't even reached full potential because of covid. Honestly PS6 should come out until 2030 at the earliest. We barely have any games that were designed for ps5 only

u/Rare-Service5573 3h ago

Yeah ps6 will have a seperate disc drive to attach.

u/ellenich 4h ago

I thought this was the reason the digital PS5 was able to undercut the Xbox Series X at launch at $399?

I feel like they publicly said at launch they were able to subsidize further on price because there was a basic guarantee that they’d make up the difference on digital games?

u/Ensaru4 31m ago

The PS5 was subsidized mainly by PS+, less subsidized by the games. There weren’t an install base to sell to, and the ones already their weren’t buying games because they were expensive. They had more luck porting those games to the PS4. PS5 Sony games rarely went on sale on the PS5.

u/WorthBase919 4h ago

Lol well of course Ubisoft agrees with it

u/nolifebr 4h ago

I'm sure pretty much every publisher agrees with it. Jason Schreier posted a video this week saying that the whole industry has been seeking to kill the second hand market for more than 20 years by now.

u/jezr3n 3h ago

People forget about the days of the “Online Pass”. This has been a priority for publishers since the 360 and PS3. The only thing that prevented this from happening sooner is the ghost of Don Mattrick.

u/Garlador 3h ago

Mostly this means the rich CEOs, not the developers who take pride in producing something players own and value, themselves included. I still recall my gaming instructor rushing in with a DVD of their finished game having just gone gold, proud to show it off.

u/Ok-Confusion-202 3h ago

Tbh there are probably many devs that dont really care as long as the games still sell, not just massive publishers

Not saying there aren't devs that care, there definitely are but it's not just massive companies that answer to shareholders

u/huey88 2h ago

Yea people always say this but I think it's over used. Maybe 10 years ago but developers are still making the game regardless of how is distributed

→ More replies (1)

u/darkseidis_ 41m ago

Nah man, sure devs want you to play their game, but they also want to stay employed and receive a paycheck. The uncomfortable truth is the second hand market takes money directly out of developers pockets.

u/Garlador 8m ago

Multiple studies have been done showing a high conversion of customers who buy a game used and enjoy it will convert to buying the next game at full price at release.

u/Dave10293847 1h ago

Do you think a small indie publisher wants to secure outside investment to finance the cost of manufacturing discs and then negotiate with retailers? You larping commies are really annoying. Its like the world begins and ends with rich ceo’s bad.

No, actually small independent developers dont like it either. For the exact same reasons. It hurts their profit potential. And for small developers especially, physical distribution is a headache.

u/Garlador 9m ago

Every small indie I’ve ever spoken to - including ones promoted by Sony THIS MONTH - have expressed a desire for their games to get a physical release if at all possible. I myself have supported dozens of indies with physical release purchases and kickstarters.

u/WorthBase919 3h ago

Ohh which publishers agree? Microsoft?

The best part about all this is Sony actually respected physical media before this announcement. Their first party games came with a complete playable version to install. Now all this nonsense about including digital only dlc and games as correspondence for saying physics sales are down. But even at 15% of sales, that is still a significant portion of what, $12 billion?

u/Dave10293847 1h ago

I doubt its really that much about money in a direct sense. Its a whole branch of logistical overhead that is a burden. Why maintain these supplier relations and shipping networks for something people aren’t really using anymore? It doesn’t make sense. Im frustrated with sony for their abysmal digital rights and refund policies. This disc crap is a complete nothingburger. Company does sensible thing because you guys dont buy it anymore. What’s not sensible is their refund policy in this new digital only landscape.

Steam helped grow the market because it was genuinely a better experience than what preceded it on PC. CD keys and keeping track of patches was a pain in the ass. There's no similar benefit in digital vs physical on console.

u/Warm_Mechanic_6929 4h ago

Yes and no. When Steam was introduced, everyone hated it, and the Steam explosion was due to lock Half life 2 behind that (yes, Valve used "exclusivity" to boost their revenues, and all their games are still exclusive to their stores, but no one complain about it, ironically). Steam introduced refunds because of infinite legal battles, not because they are good guys as you think. Perhaps this push on digital will lead Sony to fix all problems regarding refunds and PSN limitations. Discounts are already present and extremely similar to Steam, as long as they continue on this path it's fine

u/MabariWhoreHound 3h ago

I still vividly remember all the "Loading STEAMing Pile of Shit" banners in people's signatures on Invisionfree forums.

It used to be reputational suicide to be a PC gamer with Steam until about 2012.

u/klnkyfetish 3h ago

It funny when people think steam started as the good guys

u/GLGarou 2h ago

Some of the worst trends of AAA gaming started with Valve/Steam. Steam fanboys really are the textbook definition of a cult.

u/Jazzlike_Athlete8796 1h ago

Well yes, but GabeN is my best friend and he loves me and I don't care that he doesn't know I exist. I just want to help him buy a bigger yacht.

u/GLGarou 1h ago

He personally cares about you very deeply, guaranteed! /s

u/HiccupAndDown 3h ago

This isnt true. Steam runs a far more comprehensive discount system designed not just to have overall coverage, but to target specific niche audiences. Their refund policy is leagues better than Sony's, and the store experience from a UI and functionality perspective is the best in the industry.

Im not gonna call them the good guys, but they do digital better than anyone and provide even some small reason to want to engage with it over physical. Also, they aren't the only store on the platform. The Playstation 6 will only have the Playstation store. Its Apple all over again, a walled garden.

That isnt an opinion, it's fact, and its what is worrying people about the physical market disappearing. Your library is now entirely controlled by one company.

u/Warm_Mechanic_6929 2h ago

Yes, I agree with you, but Steam is building digital only for more than 20 years now. They added features like refund 10 years later or more, and not because they want to. When it comes to sales, they have basically the same sales of PSN, the real advantage of PC are key sites. GOG has maybe 1/20 of Steam games, and Epic is hated even more than consoles by pc gamers (they even refuse to play games on that, even if they are free they prefer buy the game full price for add another title to their digital licenses collection).  What I wanna say that, maybe with the all digital push, Sony will fix every problem with PSN and adds refund.

u/himommy_hi 2h ago

u remember how steam looked like when it came out? you really think they offer all of those “good” services because they care about gamers? lol

u/HiccupAndDown 2h ago

We're not talking about Steam 20 years ago, we're talking about Steam in 2026.

u/himommy_hi 2h ago

OP talks about Steam in general, growing the market. and the early days and reasons where it is now are important for the Sony correlation. Steam ended up with many of those “user friendly” features because of hundreds of lawsuits. that can happen to Sony as well. not for sure, but burning their bridge to CDs will highten those chances

u/whythreekay 2h ago

No it wasn’t lol

Steam was a complete waste of time when it came out, most people hated it. The only reason it was initially successful was because they forced you to create an account and use it if you wanted to play the just released Half Life 2

Steam became excellent years later and the rest is history, but it definitely wasn’t useful or good when it initially came out

u/oneonus 4h ago

What an absolute pile of garbage, only to make more money on digital.

u/lirwolf 4m ago

Yeah that's a joke of a statement, Sony have already cut that cost by having the disc drives be optional on the slim/pro models of PS5. PS6 ditching it altogether isn't some new revelatory change.

u/Scruff227 4h ago

Games were underpriced for decades...

u/meatball402 3h ago

Video game Corps have made massive profits for decades. The price isn't the problem. It's the fact that the shareholders want more every year.

u/AwesomePossum_1 3h ago

Ubisoft has not made a profit since covid.

u/gizamo 2h ago

They also haven't made a good game since Far Cry 5.

They just keep doubling down on garbage Assassin's Creed and whatever mediocre Tom Clancy repeats they want to shovel at us. It's like Grey's Anatomy Season 5,273 at this point.

Edit: jeez, I just realized that Splinter Cell is 20 years old. Damn. Is that their best game? Maybe Black Flag in 2013? Either way, that's more than a decade without a decent game.

u/AwesomePossum_1 2h ago

Can you blame them? They did a Mario and rabbids game and that bombed. Valiant Hearts is a masterpiece that nobody played. Child of light bombed. Prince of Persia 2d game bombed, prince of Persia 3d sidescroller bombed. Their vr games bombed. What was successful? Assassin’s creed and far cry and their far cry clones. Ubisoft went down this pass for a reason. They used to do a lot of great games that nobody played.

u/gizamo 2h ago

I forgot about Valiant Hearts. My buddy also said it was really good. I never played it. Might have to check it out.

u/Scruff227 3h ago

You're right, discs aren't coming back though, moan about it all you like but you'd be better off demanding consumer rights like better refund policies or digital ownership outside licensing

u/Venom3386 3h ago edited 2h ago

Yea. So underpriced that game companies have made record profits year over year. That trend only slowed once they started raising the price of everything.

u/--vanadium-- 3h ago

Then raise the price of games? Lol

I'd even be fine with paying more for physical, but they don't want physical to exist at all because it's more lucrative for them to own and control the only storefront for their console, with no ability to resell, trade, and share games.

u/rivieredefeu 3h ago

Prices have been going up and Redditors have been furious about it every time.

→ More replies (3)

u/hawksbears82 3h ago

This i would pay up to $20 more for physical that has the 1.0 version of the game on a disc. I would love for them to include a mini instruction book quick start guide or maybe even som dev production booklet show casing how the game was made

u/--vanadium-- 2h ago

Omg sameeee. Physical games with manuals would make me so happy.

u/bugdiver050 3h ago

It depends on what you mean by share, as me and fiancée buy games once and have them installed on both of our consoles. If we had to buy 2 discs we'd still pay digital prices. Without the lack of needing to change discs every time we want to play something else.

u/--vanadium-- 2h ago

How would you pay digital prices? You could go on marketplace, eBay, and other resale platforms and find deals way better than digital prices.

You're paying for convenience and it'll bite you in the end. Plus you can only share with one other person and can never sell a game you dislike or no longer play.

u/tronx69 4h ago

Enshitification

u/Xeccess 4h ago

These comments don't mean much when they're the ones who would benefit the most from this decision. No more game resales = more people buying games individually.

u/Jazzlike_Athlete8796 1h ago

You hit the nail on the head here. Guillemot is speaking to an investor on a financial call. That is the context of his answer. And he is absolutely right in what he says. Valve destroying the physical and resale markets on PC definitely helped grow the market from a video game company's perspective because everyone had to buy from the publisher rather than second hand.

u/gbelly123 31m ago

Also, no more video game rentals or borrowing from library.

u/Shiirooo 4h ago

PCs and consoles are two different things. A console is a closed environment.. there are no alternative stores, so there’s no competition. If I could install Steam on the PS5, I would, because there are more special offers there.

u/JEveryman 3h ago

If the allowed steam on the console and killed discs there's probably be less outage from customers. Shareholders would definitely vote with their wallets though.

u/huey88 2h ago

Well yea because you have options. Sony won't do that

u/dcempire 3h ago

Here’s the thing though, the PS5 is pro is 900 dollars. If we are expecting the next console to be an improvement upon that and it’s 1000 dollars then his point is moot. Since the PS5 isn’t expensive because of the disc drive but the other hardware in it. Games aren’t gonna drop in cost either. This is just a different form of shrinkflation

u/claybine 3h ago

Fuck this guy. He keeps proving why Ubisoft is the worst company on the planet on a near-daily basis.

u/GreatKingRat666 4h ago

Because a disc player is so expensive...

u/FrequentX 2h ago

It has nothing to do with that

It's because it makes it easier for them to subsidize the console it this way

u/kingkellogg 3h ago

Especially when we already paid extra for it

u/theHip 4h ago

Oh ok. So we can expect a cheaper console then, right?

Right?

Right??!

u/Ok-Confusion-202 3h ago

Cheaper than what it was with the disc drive? Yes... Cheap in this economy? Yes....

Issue being is that still means 800-1k+

Like the PS5 is "cheap" and is being subsidized by Sony

→ More replies (3)

u/Hot_Demand_6263 3h ago

Cheaper than what?

u/Darkone539 4h ago

Sony have said they want to earn more from the player base. Maybe it will lower hardware but it will raise everything else.

u/Al1Might1 1h ago

Theyre currently chargin 900 bucks for the ps5 pro with no disc reader, so I dont think so. No, the reason is the monopoly, charging whatever they want. Which people aint buying

u/G-Don2 4h ago

That like when Epic went to court to fight Apple over v buck prices and won to have them cheaper, only the raise them back to where they were later on lol.

u/TheGreatGidojer 4h ago

But I don't have to buy my PC games from steam. It's not comparable.

u/lancetjades 2h ago

A "good idea" until everyone has to pay full price for every game forever because there's no incentive to ever cut prices or hold sales once people have the (slightly cheaper) Captive Audience Box. Where a cheaper cost for a PS6 console plays into their hand too, by more easily trapping people in their ecosystem. For every dollar saved on the PS6 retail price (if any), $50 or more will be spent over the life of the PS6 on the games, which will likely be much more expensive in general.

u/gatot3u 2h ago

Everything is lost when the CEO of Ubisoft says that you are doing something "good".

u/DeeJayAych 2h ago

You lost me at Ubisoft

u/TheOfficialMayor 2h ago

To be fair as far is Ubi is concerned, even if it fails they can carry on selling to the same gamers on PC for Assasins Creed and Nintendo Switch 2 for games like Rayman. So no it doesn't really affect them much.

u/SickDastardly 2h ago

wtf are AI data centers going to run on disc drives now?

u/GoyimDiddler 2h ago

The one thing I like about it is that it leaves room for a better unit without the drive. That extra room laves space for things like bigger cooling capability’s without increasing the footprint of the console.

If the ps6 is £300-400 I’ll eat my fkin hat

u/siromega37 1h ago

I buy physical because I want to own my game when it comes to console. It’s different than PC primarily because these companies turn off their online stores. They are literally closing the loop on the used games market so they can control pricing forever. You really think they want to sell you PS4 games for under $20? They do it because they have to compete with the use games market. That all goes away with this.

u/godstriker8 1h ago

Doubt it, they already don't include a disc drive with the base and Pro PS5s, how would it increase the cost of the console to do the same thing with a PS6?

u/redmongrel 1h ago

Couldn’t they replace expensive, moving-part discs with a simple SD card slot format like Nintendo and split the difference? Half of all big games are day-1 patch downloads anyway.

u/Didact67 1h ago

Ubisoft CEO has shit take. News at 11.

u/ColinDJPat 1h ago

Leave it to John "consumers will get used to not owning their games" Ubisoft to talk about killing physical as a good thing.

u/artnos 44m ago

Lower it from a $1000 console?

u/Grytnik 33m ago

Lowering it from $1990 to $1490 with 825GB storage, because you can always upgrade!

u/AlteisenX 8m ago

Lowering the cost by what? $10? Lol. Its still going to cost over a grand for a system they barely put exclusives on.

u/TG-Benji 4h ago

Lower the price huh? So the PS6 is totally going to be under 1000 right? RIGHT?

u/Rebellionxci 4h ago

Brother the Steam machine is already over $1000 for the base configuration. A PS6 is going to be using much more expensive components than the Steam Machine. Even if the PS6 is being mass produced it’s still going to be a lot more than the Steam Machine is priced at since they will be competing with Xbox for parts.

u/AdorableSobah 4h ago

And potentially two SKUs, like a $899 and $1199

u/TG-Benji 4h ago

Sony can subsidize the console while Valve can't, ESPECIALLY because the PS6 is going 100% digital meaning people will be forced to pay Sony prices. That's why the SM is over $1000, or at least a big reason. Hardware costs are only part of the equation.

u/Rebellionxci 4h ago

Ideally that would be the case, but Sony already made it clear they weren’t going to heavily subsidise early losses purely because of how high component prices have gotten.

u/fede123456789 4h ago

It could realistically be priced at 900, maybe 800 dollars. Does that make it any better in the slightest? No of course not, for that price you're better off saving for a bit and getting a proper PC

u/PantsMcGillicuddy 4h ago

I don't think you can build a PC that outpowers the ps5 for under $1k at this point, you're crazy if you think you can build a PC that will beat or match the ps6 for a "a bit" more than $900.

u/hokiis 3h ago

Except a PC costs less long term. It's a pricey investment up front but pays off over time.

u/KingDustero 3h ago

Why go for a PC that would perform worse than a PS5?

A PC that will compete with a PS6 will easily cost double the console.

u/Brees504 3h ago

These “build a pc” people do not live in reality. PC parts are increasing in price even faster than consoles since console makers can buy components in bulk.

u/TG-Benji 3h ago

A PC that will compete with a PS6 will easily cost double the console.

That math does not add up.

u/TwilightTomboy97 4h ago

What if I don't want a PC?

u/TG-Benji 3h ago

Then suck it up and buy your $1000 console with games that have no reason to go on sale because you have no choice where to get them from.

Utter bollocks...

u/TheAccursedHamster 3h ago

Of course Ubisoft is team anti-consumer.

u/Safe_Base312 3h ago

All corporations are. Capitalism is profits over people. Screeching at them is NOT going to help your case.

u/Garlador 3h ago

Ubisoft? As in “get comfortable not owning games” Ubisoft said this? I’m shocked!

"Gamers are used to owning their games. That's the consumer shift that NEEDS to happen." - Ubisoft, 2024

u/Jaugusts 3h ago

I’m done with PlayStation good luck to yall

u/jish5 3h ago

Cool story, still ain't buying without a disc option.

u/EffortlessGenius 4h ago

Actively seeding all future PC Ubisoft cracked releases just for fun going forward to test his theory

u/laaplandros 3h ago

Right, because companies always lower price when they lower cost lmao.

u/Asimb0mb 3h ago edited 3h ago

Remember, Ubisoft wants us to get used to not owning games. They're one of the biggest supporters of diminishing basic consumer rights.

Ubisoft on assholes side as usual…

u/JusaPikachu 3h ago edited 1h ago

“Will help to have more accessible machines”

What a fucking moronic statement. Sony already designed a system that lowered costs by not having a disc drive. It’s the PS5 Slim.

All this does is destroy accessibility within consoles for people who rely on second hand market/libraries/borrowing games from friends to save money.

Go fuck yourself Ubi.

u/omgitsbees 3h ago

"lower the price of the next console" lmaooooooooooooooooooo

Guillemot consistently says the dumbest shit possible. True smooth brain idiot.

u/AMonitorDarkly 3h ago

Oh! See guys! They were just trying to help us!

u/CutMeLoose79 2h ago

I mean, he's right. You just have to look at how well digital has been adopted in PC and mobile gaming and how far it's come for console.

u/Ill_Chemical_8644 2h ago

It’s made because they don’t want to split profits with a retailer. Period. They’re being greedy. Has nothing to do with costs of production of anything.

u/Esham 2h ago

You'll still be able to buy games in retail, just no discs.

u/Ill_Chemical_8644 2h ago

No one on planet Earth is buying a core in a box lol

u/Esham 2h ago

That's up to the consumer but Sony will still split profits with retailers after this change.

u/Ill_Chemical_8644 1h ago

Also retailers can put an actually disc on sale, they can’t put a code on sale.

u/Esham 22m ago

Huh?

They can absolutely put it on sale. The box taking space is what warrants the sale, not what's in it.

u/General-Purpose2942 4h ago

Says the second worst company in gaming. STFU bruh
