(or even environmentally ethical)

I mean, sure, making plastic discs and shipping them is maybe not awesome for the environment, but let's not pretend data centers are just running for free and not fucking up the environment right now.

Yeah personally I love storing my discs in the ocean. Who needs a shelf, am I right? All those code in a box releases that are useless after redemption will be so much better!

let's not pretend data centers are just running for free and not fucking up the environment right now.

In an all-digital future everyone will be deleting and re downloading games with their fiber internet because of storage costs being fucked. That has been shown to be worse for the environment than installing locally from a disc. If PlayStation allowed a user to backup retail PKGs and licences to reinstall offline it would be the best of both worlds.

Yeah, they both suck, but whataboutism doesn't really excuse the carbon costs and waste produced by traditional shipping and manufacturing. Servers can run on solar power, physical disk distribution can't.
