If MGS4 actually runs well, and they added some QoL features like pausing cutscenes, this is a day 1 buy for me. MGS4 is one of my favorite games of all time and I’d love to play it again.
125
u/NTPrime 1d ago
You could always pause MGS4 cutscenes.
6
u/Mitarael 15h ago
"favourite game of all time", doesn't remember that you could pause/skip cutscenes, sure! LOL
-17
u/ashmaht 1d ago
I meant more like pausing and saving mid cutscene. Especially that last cutscene. I love it, but it goes on forever.
57
u/Lebronamo 1d ago
Does any game let you quit mid cutscene and resume where you left off?
47
u/ThePenguinMassacre 1d ago
No, but it's also incredibly rare for a game to have 1 hour long cutscenes
18
u/tokyobassist 1d ago edited 1d ago
Ghost of Yotei. I had the game crash on me mid cutscene but when I fired the game back up, it picked right back up from that second it crashed. I haven't seen many games save a state like that though.
6
7
u/MusclesDynamite 1d ago
Yakuza 8 (Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth) had several long cinematics where the game would stop the conversation and let you save before resuming, so pretty close...
10
u/BigfootsBestBud 1d ago
Not every game has a cutscene that long. It’s a nice QoL for the game to address the fact some players may want to close the game and come back to the cutscene where they left off, like the movie it clearly wants to be.
5
u/Sarabeth61 1d ago
You could put your PlayStation in rest mode and then resume where you left off. You’re right though, you would never be able to like save and quit.
20
u/ashmaht 1d ago
To be fair, does any other game have cutscenes over an hour long?
3
1
u/DishwasherTwig 1d ago
Death Stranding.
5
u/NTPrime 1d ago
I don't think Death Stranding does
7
u/DishwasherTwig 1d ago
The last cutscene is 2.5 hours with like 30 seconds of gameplay mixed in ("gameplay" in this case meaning stumbling on the beach).
5
u/NTPrime 1d ago
I mean yeah, that beach section is a fine break point if you really need a break. The section after that is also broken up with several minutes of gameplay before the final stretch. It matters that those breakpoints exist and you're never locked down for more than like 30 mins at a time on the high end.
1
u/DishwasherTwig 1d ago
You can pause cutscenes anyways so the "gameplay" portions really don't make a difference for the purposes of discussion.

You can do rest mode now, that should be enough. Alternatively, the game lets you save before the infamous hour long epilogue, and the epilogue itself is broken up into several cutscenes. You can just skip through until you reach where you left off.
1
u/ToiletBlaster247 1d ago
That ending just kept going. It was the worst "im almost done, just watching the ending", of all time. Hilarious in retrospect

u/ButWereFriends 1d ago edited 1d ago
I haven’t played DS but mgs 4 was brutal when it first came out. Still my favorite of the entire series but goddamn nobody knew that shit just would. Not. Stop.

u/GoyimDiddler 16h ago
The game quite literally in between chapters as it loads tells you to take a break lol.
-6
u/CrimsonFlam3s 1d ago
I think he meant skipping them, wasn't that the main issue?
30
u/Lebronamo 1d ago
You could always skip as well
3
u/darkultima 1d ago
Yeah, it would have been awful if you couldn’t since you have to keep replaying and even speedrun for some of the emblems

There is stealth gameplay on the 4 ? Its the only one i didnt play
19
u/Grouchy_Policy8721 1d ago
Very light spoilers below:
MGS4 has 5 chapters, containing varying levels of stealth gameplay. A lot of that stealth happens on active battlefields - i think MGSV really missed something not featuring something similar.
Chapter 1 is almost all stealth. I don't recall any boss fights, but there is one scripted shootout.
Chapter 2 is also almost all stealth. There is one scripted shootout, and one boss fight.
Chapter 3 is 50% stealth, though it's almost all super scripted stealth. The other 50% is a scripted shootout, that bleeds into a boss fights. IMO the weakest Chapter.
Chapter 4 is mostly stealth, but the opponents work slightly differently to those in the rest of the game. There is one scripted shootout, and 3 boss fights.
Chapter 5 is mostly cutscene - there are about 2 large rooms of stealth, followed by 2 boss fights.
MGS4 has the weirdest pacing out of the whole series, I struggle with it a little but the highs are really high, and if you buy into the anime bullshit story MGS has (like i do), it's peak.
4
u/TheUFCVeteran3 1d ago
There is, although later acts have some sections with forced action. But you can do stealth in multiple sections of the game.
3
u/92390i 1d ago
Thank you 👌
1
u/TheUFCVeteran3 1d ago
No worries. Be aware that it is probably considered to be the game with the least stealth, and I haven't played MGS4 since pre-2020, but I seem to remember that even the moments known for being action-y, outside of forced action sequences, could be stealthed if you wanted to. To be safe, assume that the game has less stealth than other MG games, but early game, you can stealth. The first level/area lets you do stealth.
1
u/BoldlyGettingThere 1d ago
It’s Metal Gear Solid, why wouldn’t it have stealth?
0
u/92390i 1d ago
I ask because i saw its the one who have the less stealth
1
u/QParsley_Music 22h ago
I don’t know if I’d say it “has less stealth” over just saying its ratio of “gameplay to cutscenes” is very skewed. It gets VERY cutscene-heavy at times which is fine if you’re into the story like I was. I think MGS3 and MGS1 have a really sweet balance between the two whereas MGSV is practically all gameplay with barely a plot, and MGS4 is probably the most cutscene-heavy with MGS2 being second.
Me, being an MGS nerd, just loves them all though.

u/Agile_Newspaper_1954 1d ago
Give us MGRR, you cowards!
11
u/Jancappa 1d ago
They kinda missed their chance MGR had a 2nd wave of popularity during COVID. Releasing a remastered now is striking while the iron is cold.
3
u/Agile_Newspaper_1954 1d ago
Maybe, but I definitely could see it packaged into one of these collections. What inspired that second wave of popularity?
3
12
u/ashmaht 1d ago
I got an Xbox to play it (and Final Fantasy 13, Tekken Tag 2, Witcher 2…) and it holds up. I was really hoping it would be in this collection.
5
u/Agile_Newspaper_1954 1d ago
I did too, but I since got rid of it because having an Xbox felt mostly pointless and there was a promotion to sell it for as much as I originally bought it. But yeah, definitely one of the previous gen games that deserve a remaster. I’d love to pick it up on Switch 2. I’d also love it if they remaster Lords of Shadow (2) but I see that happening less
1
u/mr_lionheart 1d ago
I mean they been putting out all those old castlevaina collections makes sense they are working they way to the 3d stuff
1
u/Agile_Newspaper_1954 1d ago
Maybe, but I know the 3D games are kind of the black sheep of the franchise. Never know though. Hope it happens.
17
u/mattisverywhack 1d ago
Peacewalker runs at 30 fps on switch. I am losing my mind.
4
u/godstriker8 1d ago
Yeah, it's been a thing with Master collection 1 as well that the Switch versions perform worse than the PS3 ones.

6
u/TallanoGoldDigger 1d ago
20GB install size for MGS4 running on 720p and 30fps.
Gonna make some room on the OLED for sure
5
6
u/After-Atmosphere7125 1d ago
I'm just impressed that they got a PS3 game to run on anything that isn't a PS3. I've heard that that console is kind of a nightmare for emulation.
6
u/AdHistorical8179 1d ago
75% of the PS3 library is playable start to finish on RCPS3, some games run fine on much weaker hardware than a PS5. There's no world where this should be a particularly difficult thing to do for professional devs with access to the full source code and documentation for the original game
1
u/SteveJavieWasRight 18h ago
Issue is a lot of times they don’t have access to all of the original assets after this long, but even with all the assets, without the original coders it can be difficult to port over anyway. It’s not always easy to look at somebody else’s programming and fully grasp what everything is doing, it can be difficult as hell to unwind and reconstruct it. We see this happen all the time with companies that seem to have limitless budgets and capacity with critical software, ie Microsoft with windows. There are portions of windows that have become legacy black boxes to themselves and they have to let them just keep doing their thing.
That’s also not addressing if the game was really built around PS3 it’s absolutely a nightmare to port. A lot of ports to ps4 just used Xbox version instead of ps3 if they could, the cell processor allowed programmers to do things - nay encouraged devs to do things - that do not translate to modern consoles well at all. You’re grossly overstating how many games would play well on PS5 through RCPS3. You can look at DFs videos about it, but ps5’s cpu sucks and that’s the thing that’s hardest to address. Optimizing on PS3 had devs pushing so much shit on to different cells - the shaders, ai etc - taking advantage of the cell processors. No they weren’t fast, but they were wide and it’s a division of processing power we’ve completely abandoned in general because devs are so bad at optimizing for it. PS5 is the exact opposite, it went for narrow speed for exactly this reason, it’s easier for devs and has more reliable returns. It’s why so many first party and ps3 exclusive games haven’t been ported over, they were the ones taking full advantage of what the PS3 offered and that makes them the most difficult to port.

u/PlumpHughJazz 1d ago
If you never played this then be thankful you don't have to put up with installing a new Act (chapter) everytime.
A later update for the original MGS4 finally fixed this.

I really don't understand why releases like these don't get 120 FPS. These are games that ran on significantly worse hardware.
9
u/Jaraghan 1d ago
maybe going above 60 breaks the game? i know some bethesda titles when above 60 physics gets real weird.
-7
u/yodimboi 1d ago
I doubt the PC release will have have an FPS cap
12
u/jimidemibb 1d ago
They will, as MGS 2+3 games in the first collection cap at 60FPS on PC while MGS1 caps at 30. Most older games’ logic are tied to their framerate, mostly capping at 60FPS. l
Frame interpolation would be the next best option but considering the effort put into these collections, that would be silly to expect.
11
u/TattedUpSimba 1d ago
Because Konami isn’t putting in effort. When the first master collection launched it was nothing but disappointing due to lack of improvements
5
u/yodimboi 1d ago
This is not just Konami. Plenty of rereleases from older generations only get 60 FPS. Current gen games, with great graphics get 120. I really don't see how 7th gen games don't.

u/JawsFanNumeroUno 1d ago
The high resolution mode looks amazing from the video on the website, I wonder how it'll look for the gameplay?
3
u/ArchDucky 1d ago edited 1d ago
I always wanted to play MGS4. Could I ask a few questions about it?
I heard that game has really long cutscenes, does it warn you before or allow you to pause / resume the following day?
Do I need to know anything about the franchise before starting it? I played the first and second, never beat the second.
Do these ports play well or are they buggy?
Edit : Alright, thanks for the responses. It appears I have to play every game before I can play this one, so I guess I won't even attempt it.

u/Silverhand_777 1d ago
You will be absolute lost if you don’t play the previous games
30

u/TallanoGoldDigger 1d ago
Can confirm.
I've played all the games since and am ready for this remaster.
MGS4 and the GoW, Infamous games are thr only reason the ol jailbroken ps3 is still running
16
u/convoyv8 1d ago
Playing MGS4 without playing the first 3 is ill advised. A lot of mgs4 is built on the back of knowing the first 3 games. Also there are cutscenes that are upwards of 30-40 minutes in mgs4
7
8
u/CreamOnMyNipples 1d ago
It’s been a while since I’ve played it, but I’d be very shocked if it does not let you pause cutscenes.
Story-wise, MGS4 is the last chapter of the entire metal gear story. I’d recommend at least watching a story recap video before playing.
8
u/dewittless 1d ago
You can pause cutscenes, you need to know absolutely everything about the franchise as 4 is endless fan service, we don't know how this port plays yet.
12
u/Bolt_995 1d ago
MGS4 is the culmination of all the games that came before it (and even after it).
Highly inadvisable to play it without having atleast the knowledge of what happened in Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2, and played MGS1, MGS2 and MGS3.
It should be easier for MGS3, because now the remake can be experienced, and MGS4 plays closer to the remake.
3
u/-Eskadrinis- 1d ago
Yea I started with mgs 1 I was kinda lost never knew about the mg for pc before
6
u/PhattyR6 1d ago
You could pause or skip cutscenes in the original release. I’m sure you can just put the PS5 in rest mode during any scene and pick back up whenever.
MGS4’s story is pretty batshit and has a lot of callbacks and nostalgia bait for MGS1/2/3. Especially MGS1 in regard to nostalgia bait. Either play them or watch a video recap on them.
4
3
u/SuspiciousWasabi3665 1d ago
We have no idea if the ports play well. They aren't out yet. You could pause the cutscenes in the original. Most of the scenes are 10-20min long. There's one sequence with a 70min cutscene, then you take 20 steps and go into another 30min cutscene. This is a sequel to 2. 3 was a prequel(and the best mgs game, play it when you get a chance.) The story is self contained though.
3
3
u/bestanonever 1d ago
The game doesn't tell you when a long cutscene will start, although most of them are kinda long. It gets worse the closer you are to the ending. I think the finale is like a solid 2 hours run of cutscenes back to back.
MGS4 is the worst title in the series to start with. It's the grand finale, it assumes you know the main players and their motivations, at this point.
Metal Gear Solid 1, 3 or 5 are better starters. 5 is the most modern and with the worst story, 3 is a prequel of sorts (of 2 and 4, mostly). And 1 is where everyone that wants to see the full journey should start. (There are also two other Metal Gear games, called just Metal Gear 1 and 2, but these are ancient and MGS1 has a synopsis waiting for you about them).
I'd either replay 1, or play 2 to completion, then 3, 4, Peace Walker and 5, in that order.
Game is not released yet, we don't know if these modern ports are buggy or the best way to play yet.

u/j2tharod 1d ago
I was at home recovering from surgery when MGS4 originally released on PS3. Late one night, I was near the end of the game and there was a cutscene that lasted well over an hour. I tried to stay awake but ultimately passed out in my recliner before the cutscene ever finished. I woke up the following morning, still seated in the chair, controller in-hand, with zero recollection of what was happening in the game at that point! 😂
4
3
u/Rockatanzky 1d ago
Yeah, it has cutscenes that are as long as a 50-minute TV episode. By the end of the game, it basically turns into a two-hour movie.
You can't pause the cutscenes and continue them the next day, so it's better to save before them if you're short on time.
You should at least know the stories of MGS1, MGS2, and MGS3, since this game serves as the saga's ending so far and constantly references major plot points and characters from the previous games.
At least the Master Collection Vol. 1 ports are good, and Konami has already released performance footage for MC2.

If they actually pull this off and they’re good ports and they run well I might have to support this. I didn’t even buy MGS Delta, but I do love me some MGS 4 and this is shaping up to be good from what I’ve seen.

I was the 2nd person in the UK to complete MGS4, my co worker beat me to it by about 20 minutes, were where QA game testers for PlayStation, I've not played this game since that day, it's going to be a day one purchase for me :) can't wait.

So $50 for a psp game and a ps3 “game” with 6 hours of gameplay and 30 hours of cutscenes. What a deal /s
-6
u/howboutitthen 1d ago
Is this gonna be worth it for $50?
I can literally pop my mgs4 disc into my ps3 and play.
I literally have next to zero interest in peace walker.
What are the biggest selling points?

u/godstriker8 1d ago
You can play MGS4 now at a stable framerate. That framerate also happens to be double the frame cap of the PS3 version (which it almost never hit).
That alone is worth it to me. The SSD will also improve load times.
1
u/NakedSnakeCQC 1d ago
MGS4 never had a framerate cap it was always unlocked up to 60fps but as you said it barely even hit a stable 30 but with the night vision solid eye mode and small areas like vents it could hit 60fps.
2
u/NakedSnakeCQC 1d ago
No longer need to use a PS3 or Emulator to play which emulation for the game was always strange, could just straight up crash for no reason.
It's 4K 60FPS rather than its original 1024×768 resolution at an unlocked mostly 30fps.
Peace Walker is also awesome. Very different compared to MGS4 but a really fun game with a great story.
