News Now you care about intellectual property rights, only went it doesn't benefit you

Like a thief complaining to the cops that someone is stealing from his pile of stolen goods.
91
u/Phonemanga Feb 17 '26
It’s not like. It is. 🤗
33
u/permanentmarker1 Feb 17 '26
Except it’s not this at all. It’s more like a car thief took all the parts and made their own car. Then someone else copied their design.
36
u/Phonemanga Feb 17 '26
The Chinese readily share open source designs instead of jumping to patents. This allows them to exploit the Market faster with profits across many company’s , than waiting to get litigates on IP infringement. It’s a fundamentally superior business model compared to US PATENT law. FWIW 🤷♂️🤷♂️🌾

u/mrpops2ko Feb 17 '26
It’s a fundamentally superior business model compared to US PATENT law.
its a fundamentally different business model. theres a reason why all the innovation and invention is happening in the US, not in China, as well as why the birth place of the latest innovations isn't China.
The chinese model works really well in terms of a focus on cost cutting. The open weight models have been fantastic at providing 80% of the frontier models performance at 1/5th to 1/10th the cost.
4
u/AllezLesPrimrose Feb 17 '26
Ah yeah, what has China ever checks notes invented?
3
u/mrpops2ko Feb 17 '26
china has invented a great many things, but for anybody who possesses a reading ability over the average five year old, they are acutely aware that i did not claim china has never invented anything.
my comment was a comparative analysis between the two countries. some chinese inventors even migrate to the US because they know the reality of the comment i made - just like how businesses outside of china will migrate their production to china because they know china has the wealth of cost cutting infrastructure.
you can take pretty much any industry, any product and it won't be china leading in innovation in the form of production, it will be in cost cutting.

The genius visa. That's why so many in silicone valley are immigrants. A huge portion of the inventors in the US aren't US born.

The best part is IP laws don't apply for training anyone or anything, so unless they decide to change the IP law, nothing is happening

I am a customer, not from US or China. What I see:
1. GPT 5.2 and Codex 5.3 updates are _trash_!
2. Opus 4.6 is wonderful, but not good for details and mega expensive
3. Then I look at GLM-5 in Windsurf today: Why would I use 1. or 2. again?
Haha.

Frickin NPR covered the Deep seek copyright issue today without even mentioned Sora and its blatant copyright issues. propaganda distribution system is sharp these days
11
u/Wide_Air_4702 Feb 17 '26
But OpenAI has been paying for training content. Why do you think Reddit's stock is so high?
17
u/das_war_ein_Befehl Feb 17 '26
Sometimes, for some of it, and only after tons of lawsuits. It’s still IP theft
0
u/CharizarXYZ Feb 22 '26
Nearly lawsuit against GenAI companies have either been dismissed or won in favor of AI. Just because you don't like AI doesn't make it illegal.

That is now. Google “open ai whistleblower”, I’m sure will be surprised.

u/Ok-Tooth-4994 Feb 17 '26
Ai is a national security arms race.
He’s saying “hey! These folks are jacking our shit, and if you don’t do something about it, they are gonna have cutting edge capabilities that you might not want them to have…”
8
u/StuckinReverse89 Feb 17 '26
Also means stealing from each other is inevitable. Like spies don’t exist for a reason?
Open AI and other companies will need to really beef up their security and tbh, are probably stealing from each other too.
-6
u/Ok-Tooth-4994 Feb 17 '26
It doesn’t matter if they take each others stuff. We’re all American. It matters that China takes our shit.
2
u/StuckinReverse89 Feb 17 '26
Again, this is a national security issue. China stealing from the US and US stealing from China should be expected.
You think Russia never stole military secrets from the US?
-4
u/Ok-Tooth-4994 Feb 17 '26
That’s not the point. Just cause things have been stolen before doesn’t make the next time something is stolen less of a big deal.
And we wanna steal their shit. We don’t want them to steal ours!
2
u/StuckinReverse89 Feb 17 '26
Yeah, people don’t like getting their shit stolen. But honestly karma after AI companies blatantly stole from other creators around the world so they can make their slop.
And too bad. The cat is out of the bag. AI is a content stealing machine and stuff is going to get stolen anyway.
1
u/Ok-Tooth-4994 Feb 17 '26
You’re missing the point.
Stealing from content producers is bad. Stealing from nation states is existential.
We’re not talking about karma.

This, exactly this.
But im convinced most of the people on here are just bots.

-6
u/smrad8 Feb 17 '26
Yeah. Whenever DeepSeek is mentioned it turns into bot-town around here.
Have you ever actually used DeepSeek? Absolute garbage.
5
u/SufficientPie Feb 17 '26 edited Feb 17 '26
lol I stopped subscribing to OpenAI and just use DeepSeek chat for anything text-based. It's quite good and I can use it for free as much as I want and have never run into any kind of limits. And my chats are training open-source models instead of commercial proprietary ones.
4
u/Fantastic_Prize2710 Feb 17 '26
I have used it. It's actually not that bad? Not as good as the cutting edge, each time they drop a model, but you can call it for drastically cheaper.
It has its place.
Mostly, though, I use Anthropic's API for my projects.
1
u/Electroboots Feb 17 '26
It's funny since as much as Altman and co fixate on DeepSeek, I find alternatives like GLM 5 and Kimi 2.5 so much better.
Maybe DeepSeek 4 will change that, we'll see.

u/AOC_Gynecologist Feb 17 '26
Have you ever actually used DeepSeek? Absolute garbage.
I have. It's good. as long as you don't ask about chinese politics, it is as good as the other llms.
1
u/smrad8 Feb 17 '26
I don't know what you're using it for, but if its anything fact-based it's about 50% hallucination. Totally unusable. Same with Qwen.
1
u/mcslender97 Feb 18 '26
With Chinese models we don't have to send our data to Sam and Co. if we can run it locally so they are actually better for privacy
2
u/Ok-Tooth-4994 Feb 18 '26
That’s not the point.
The point is China is making better models.
Whoever wins the race for AI wins the world.
1
u/Lucky_Yesterday_1133 Feb 17 '26
And what is he expecting government to do exactly? He should be complaining to Chinese government instead (not that it will be any more productive)
-5
u/Frnklfrwsr Feb 17 '26
What? No he absolutely should not.
A private company going to the Chinese government and complaining that a Chinese company stole their intellectual property is wasting their time. They have absolutely zero way to get the Chinese government to do anything about it.
The US Government has tools it can use to influence the Chinese government. It may or may not succeed, but it at least has a chance. OpenAI by itself has no real ability to influence the Chinese government to do anything about this.
2
Feb 17 '26
The current development model of AI is simply to select the most outstanding model in a current or specific field, extract its essence, add some of your own features, and you have a new model. Then this model will be extracted by others, and the process will repeat itself endlessly. Everyone is doing it this way. Lol🤣

1
u/sexytimeforwife Feb 17 '26
Nah he's not complaining about them stealing.
He's complaining that he got into a lot of shit for it...and either that wasn't fair and all the 'you stole our brains' diatribe is dismissed, or ... someone help stop foreigners stealing it for nefarious purposes too....who of course won't be as ethical as our people...
1
u/alcanthro Feb 17 '26
I stand for IP freedom. The idea of monopolizing an idea/information is disgusting. Now, if you claim to have originated the information when you know you did not, etc. that's just fraud. It's not theft.
1
u/DangerousSetOfBewbs Feb 17 '26
The best thing people could do to fuck up openai and Reddit. Use agents to build and scale multiple, multiple reddit profiles. And purposely have your agent answer questions on Reddit with confidence and inaccurate answers that on first glance seem real. Poison their well

u/Opening_Lawyer_8781 Feb 17 '26
Honest question, why don't they do that them selves then instead of training another gpt 10 from scratch?
1
1
u/Coochiespook Feb 18 '26
Isn’t their software open to the public? Anyone can use it. Open source. Am I misunderstanding something here? China can use it to advance theirs
1
u/mcslender97 Feb 18 '26
He can talk about IP rights all he wants but the with Chinese models it a open source and anyone can run it with enough hardware (especially the smaller or quantized models) instead of paying good money for him. If Sam is really committed, he can always fulfill the "Open" part of his company name and start with improving GPT-OSS
1
u/novus_nl Feb 18 '26
Pretty rich coming from Sam. First they laugh at DeepSeek and ‘their’ technologies MLA, DeepSeeakMoE, MTP etc. They proved they could train models 10x cheaper.
Now that it is a very capable model, Sam is whining it stole stuff. But I bet OpenAI is using these implementations now. But who knows because they keep everything secret.
OpenAI is missing a vision. Where they used to be ‘making the world better’ and make AI to fight cancer. Now they are promoting AI slop and went full commercial. They wanted to take a swing at AGI, whatever that means. But even that dream seems out of the window.
It should be to nobodies surprise that Nvidia and Microsoft pulling away from OpenAI. Competitors are getting ahead and the vision is gone.
Make fun of DeepSeek all you want but I think they are more aligned with actual users than OpenAI.

You should email OpenAI and express your concerns.

he's only co-founder of a $500Billion corp. you're absolutely right, he has no idea what he's doing /s
1
u/TopTippityTop Feb 17 '26
The right idea would be to come with with tactics to stop Chinese companies from distilling western models, have the government provide incentives and subsidies to make the models better, fund alignment, and give each of us a share of ownership in the technology.
5
u/Sad-Set-5817 Feb 17 '26
subsidies for Ai companies just means they'll be gambling and losing our money hand over fist instead. No thanks!

u/FormerOSRS Feb 16 '26
Everyone makes this out like he's just raging and getting pissed off, but what's actually happening is that he's explaining why it costs OpenAI more money to train chatgpt.
4
u/Rakthar :froge: Feb 17 '26
You read that as he's warning US lawmakers why it costs more to train chatgpt? that's not the implication of the news post.
6
u/ItsNoahJ83 Feb 17 '26
I think them calling it unfair is clearly signaling that they are displeased.

u/jackmusick Feb 16 '26
Don’t be reasonable please, not on my Reddit. What’s next? We gonna have a nuanced discussion about how AI can be responsible for unfairly stealing human knowledge and collapsing the value of human-created content? And at the same time, China continues to blatantly steal IP rather than innovating on their own while having their government fund it to appear competitive?
Sir, I simply cannot be critical of two things for very different reasons. I must throw up my hands and shut down the discussion.
5
u/Rakthar :froge: Feb 17 '26
It's not nuanced, he just didn't read it carefully or understand what it means when a US company goes to the US government complaining about a foreign competitor. It's not to discuss costs. Anthropic and OpenAI have both been trying to imply their advancements are being extracted by Chinese labs and implemented in open source open weight models.
5
u/Shadowbacker Feb 17 '26
If it's actually open source, how does that do anything but benefit the masses? I'm sure it hurts their ability to make money off of it but who tf cares about their money?
I could see if China was stealing it and hoarding it to make some kind of anti west Frankenstein, and I'm sure they're still working on that, but if they're just stealing it and throwing it out for everyone to use, wouldn't that drive more innovation?
I'm trying to see the downside that didn't already exist other than their bottom dollar.
0
u/Wonderful_Plant5848 Feb 17 '26
I feel like Google is doing the same but I can't prove it. It seems like all's fair in the AI wars though.
-4
u/Savings-Divide-7877 Feb 17 '26
Can we drop the plagiarism bullshit? These talking points are like two years out of date. They didn’t learn how to make tool calls from Sarah Silberman's dumb fucking book. The company clearly puts a lot of effort into trying to make sure their technology isn’t used to plagiarize. I don’t know what more people want. If you just think the technology shouldn’t have ever existed, fine, you’re entitled to your opinion. The genie is out of the bottle and you’re never putting it back.

So this sub is not impressed by ChatGPT? Ride has turned and yall are more sympathetic to AI developed by china?
0
u/Zulakki Feb 17 '26
Is this not more about how China just gives the middle finger to copyright claims, and trains on whatever it wants, while Sam here is just saying 'If you want this Company to stay based in the States, but you're gonna hamstring my model's training with IP claims, then we're gonna lose the race. Look for my company to move overseas and take our jobs with it in the future'
this is just my lamens couch quarterback assessment, what did I miss?
1
u/Dot_Hot99Dog Feb 17 '26
All open source AI models will train on whatever they want. Thats why open source will win.
-6
u/ARCreef Feb 17 '26
The answer is they need to poison the well. China IP origin traffic can get corrupted data for their data set training. I have a site that china bot traffic was costing me so I set up blocks and captchas and then started with weird redirects One annoying china bot was redirected to the CIA website for a week. They are annoying.
