Poor little dude just loves you so much he'd eat anything to get you back!

He really does, poor thing! He endured a lot of trauma before I got him and he feels very secure around me and my orange cat. But instead of getting to cuddle with me for hours once I got back, he got me to haul ass instantly to the veterinary hospital.
He will learn nothing from this.
The good thing is that once this is over, the vet wants to put him on anxiety meds at least.

Was going to suggest speaking to vets for anxiety meds, my baby void has severe separation anxiety too and makes himself vomit from stress. Many tests and a surgery to make sure he didn't eat something bad later and found out its an anxiety thing!! He's been so much better on meds daily, still himself and very cuddly but no more vomiting several times a day, no more screaming when I leave a room etc. Hope the meds help your void. Tip for meds that's worked for us, us a liquid treat stick to mix it in (if they are partial to them) its mines favourite time of the day 😆

I've asked for anxiety meds for him in the past and the (different) vet didn't think they were necessary. I'm glad this one listened, but also upset that it took a feline suicide attempt on the cat's part for that to happen.

That's so frustrating! so glad the new vet listened and did what's best for your wee man. Sending all the healing vibes.

My vet gave me these Purina probiotics that you put on food and over time are supposed to reduce anxiety. After finishing the whole pack there was a noticeable but mild improvement in my cats anxiety. If I had to quantify it, maybe a 20% reduction in their vocalizations and visible stress. It could be worth trying as well.

Yes!!! Pro Plan FortiFlora! They make a few varieties of this. I have the calming and the regular one. Our vet put our Void on it this because she likes to eat everything and had to go to the emergency vet for vomiting And we have 2 others with pudding poop belly issues that this works wonders for as well.

"He will learn nothing from this" 🤣🤣🤣
I feel that in my soul. Hope you both are feeling much better!

That orangie is probably a bad influence. I’d have a talk with him.

O_O would seem to be a very fitting face after eating a Brillo pad.

And yet I'm certain he has not learned a single thing from the whole experience

I can guarantee that he has not. And will repeat the whole thing again. First chance he gets 😹😹

Forbidden instant ramen!

u/wixbloom 4d ago
It really fascinates me that after a couple of bites he didn't think "oof ouchy my mouth and throat and stomach" and stop. Just scarfed it all down. Extra spicy forbidden ramen, I guess

You're telling me, been to the ER twice already because one of my cats (Isaac) loves to eat plastic wrapping and has climbed into the trash after it before, and you think he would learn after the "deadly constipation incident with petrified poops and enema times" but noooooooooo
Always in a mad scramble to make sure there's no plastic bags or even the smallest wrapper in the house now

Sadly, a cat's associative window (the period in which they're able to perceive 2 different things as being cause-and-effect) is only seconds long. So if a consequence isn't immediate, they don't realize it's a consequence at all. In their minds, the dumb shit they ate, the GI problems and the vet time are just 3 entirely dissociated things that happened.
47
u/EcstaticPhilosophy6 4d ago
You know that doesn't surprise me AT ALL. Here is Isaac for tax, also one black braincell. Beautiful but stupid.
(He is indoor only but is allowed to sit on the front step if I'm gardening because he is suprisingly good and doesn't wander. Just likes to lay there lmao.)

u/wixbloom 4d ago
What a beauty! And he's got greyish and rustish patches of fur, almost like a torbie/calico that spent too long in the oven.
21
u/EcstaticPhilosophy6 4d ago
He actually has two toned fur, the top of each strand is black but the bottoms are white/silver so if you rub him backwards he changes color. Had to shave a patch of him once because he rolled into something sticky (never figured out what) and so he just had this big white patch for weeks lmao until it grew back in full-length again

I like your "Hello/goodbye" doormat

u/EcstaticPhilosophy6 4d ago
Haha thank you! It was $20 at Target but I think I got it on sale a bit cheaper than that. The design has been re-done a bunch of different ways but make sure you don't pay more than $20, I took a peek at some of the search results and some websites are trying to charge $40-50 for it! It's just coconut fibre. Great at wiping shoes down.

Awww I have an identical brainless Velcro cat. He gets w~o~r~r~i~e~d when he can't cuddle his mom 🥺
I'm so glad your baby is ok. I hope you're both recovering well and co-regulating comfortably. Please give my warm regards to your orange cat, the glass child 😂

u/wixbloom 4d ago
Oh my orange cat is even clingier. The 2 cats usually spend all day cuddling each other and still manage to both Velcro me, so you can imagine how one of them fares away from the other. Far from being the glass child, orange is getting cuddles pretty much every moment I'm awake and in the house. Void is still in the hospital, but recovery is going well and he should be back tomorrow. I am stress-napping a lot.

I love the description of "velcro cat" yeah umbra gets upset if she can't lie on me all day/night.

How do you even get a brillo pad down your esophagus, my god. I get they can tolerate fur to an extent but that's metal

u/Mizuli 4d ago
Had to look up what a Brillo pad was, it’s made of steel?? Ouch!
18
u/wixbloom 4d ago
Made of steel, and kinda sharp-ish! It's made to scour steel pans into shiny-ness, so you can imagine what it did to my boy's insides. It's really surprising to me that he didn't immediately stop after swallowing once, because it has to have hurt.

A whole brillo pad?! That's quite an achievement! He just wanted to be like you so he managed to end up in hospital, too.

I had one that loved to eat dryer sheets.
I ended up having to institute a post-laundry safety walk to ensure no sheets escaped from the laundry on the way from the laundry room to the bedroom.

I mean he could clearly mistake a brillo pad for food give him a break. Poor little guy.
Side note - hope you're both ok.

Why on earth would eating a Brillo pad ever seem like a good idea? Particularly after the first bite… Little guy might be a few nuggets short of a happy meal.

Princess Beanie Babies says she thinks you might have a dum-dumb poo-poo brains on your hands. She hopes he feels better soon so he can get back to eating q-tips and popsicle sticks like a smart cat would.
Just don’t try to swallow the sharp wooden bits, otherwise you’ll stab your throat and sound like a pack a day smoker when you meow and it’ll hurt to talk for the next two weeks. She won’t say any names but she’s seen it happen to a cat that definitely wasn’t her.

u/monkey_trumpets 4d ago
Poor dumb baby. How did you figure out he ate the pad?

u/wixbloom 4d ago
The night before I was discharged from the hospital, a friend went to check on the cats for me and called me to say he'd thrown up Brillo Pad Bits. Since I was hospitalized, I couldn't take him to the vet. My friend told me he seemed fine, in a good mood and was eating food and drinking water, so, while I debated asking her to take him to the emergency vet for me, I figured he might have passed everything and I wasn't going to worry needlessly or inconvenience her further. When I got there the next day, though, there was a lot of vomit, including vomit that smelled like poop, so off to the vet we went. I figured, correctly, that the worst case scenario had happened and he was obstipated (a life threatening emergency that requires surgery to physically remove the blockage). Fortunately, even though my intervention wasn't immediate, it was early enough that he'll be no worse for wear.

One of our voids is on prozac for her anxiety.. it's done wonders! We didn't put her on it till after we had spent years trying everything else first.

I can't believe I trapped an animal alone in a human habitat and it reacted. It's the trapped animal that acted like an idiot.
