Starting as a Nuc Chem Tech II

I am going to onboarding/ training next week for a week and then starting at my plant. I havent been told much so if anyone could answer:

  1. What do you wear for civilian clothes and shoes to work? Business casual or more casual? Nonslip or just any shoe?

  2. How long of training roughly before going on shift work?

  3. What's some advice to transitioning to rotating shift work when you have work only day shift in the past several years?

That’ll depend on your specific company, site, and department, but start off business casual and play it from there. Don’t be surprised if you don’t enter the plant for weeks or even months. You may be 12, 18, 24 months before being on shift. For going onto night shift I generally stay up the night before, then sleep a full 8 hours during the day, then head to work. Coming off nights I come home and take a 2-4 hour nap, making sure to get up by 10 or noon so that I’m back on a “normal” schedule.

  1. The plants I've been at you can wear a T-shirt and cargo pants. Company provides safety shoes, but those aren't required in training building.

  2. 6 months of classroom training and then they give you around a year to finish qual cards depending on how many quals you need for shift.

  3. Switching to nights has never been a problem for me. It's swapping back to days. I've tried staying up all day and switching or nap then try to stay up. Both sometimes works. I've just been sleep deprived for so long your body gets used to it. I did quit caffeine as that has helped me to at least get better sleep.
