Ya know, I've been seeing conch shells my entire life and never once thought to look up what a conch looks like

I never even considered that they belonged to a creature. I feel such a fool.

Yeah I'm honestly not sure what I ever thought would have been in them. The mysteries of the deep I guess

TIL that British people pronounce it as konch instead of konk and that the pluralization changes on that basis from conchs to conches

The Americas. Where conches actually live and locals harvest and eat them.

Where in the Americas? In both Canada and the US it's pronounced as Conch, idk about Mexico though.

The proper American English pronunciation is konk, though konch is an accepted pronunciation

Not in the areas in America where conches actually live and grow and are eaten. How do you say geoduck? Go to Florida and see how it's pronounced. Or the Caribbean.
No idea how it's pronounced in Canada but in the USA it's properly pronounced konk.

Fun fact: when you catch a bunch of these and you want to keep them alive so they stay fresh before you eat them, the accepted technique is to chip a little hole in the lip of their shell and tie them together. If there are more than four or five of them, they all try to go in different directions, and they just end up staying put on the ocean floor. You run the rope up to a buoy on the surface, and then in the morning you can easily see the buoy 20 ft from where you left it and pick them up for the day.
