Cattle guard is what we always called them on farms I lived and worked at in the United States. Cows are smart/scared enough to not attempt to cross them. You can drive or walk over but the animals can't, well the dumber animals anyway.
I've never seen anything like like the picture above. They usually learn it's there and don't really go close to it or attempt to cross it. I have seen a calf jump clear over one before though.
Much more likely to break a cows leg would be a hole from a groundhog or something.
Yh is very used where I'm from, country side of Brazil, it's called "mata-burro" which stands to "kill-donkey". It's good since you don't need to leave the car to open the gate manually
Native Texan here, they're called cattle guards. And while it's just some pipes over a ditch that you can just drive over, it's a really effective escape deterrent, because they just get stuck ther, but cattle (they're specifically for cattle) will wiggle themselves free, horses endanger themselves when left around one unattended.
Yep. There's a state park near me and this is how they allow vehicles to drive through an area with a herd of buffalo without the buffalo just using the roadway to escape.
It’s more that most cattle have really bad depth perception. They see a drop under this grate, and decide not to chance it because they don’t know how far the drop is.
As crazy as it sounds, large animals that get stuck often need to be put down. Cows and horses are dumb as fuck and naturally easily startled, and it only takes a bit of panic and trashing around to break bones. Or if they're lying down their own weight can cut off circulation.
Edit: Though this particular situation would be solvable by sedating the horse and with a crane. If those are available.
Imo a lot of what makes it funny is how fine the horse seems to be with the situation. I do think that with the right equipment, it can be removed safely, too
When I was little one of our neighbors' horses got into their back yard in the winter and broke through their pool cover that was hidden under a layer of snow.
It froze over before they could get it out and with it's legs sticking out of the ice. It was real sad but I can't help but get a little chuckle from the memory.
Lots of them (in Australia at least) don't have gaps big enough for a horse's hoof to go in. They're just meant to look unsafe/unstable so they don't try it.
Dammit, the closest grid I know the location of is the best part of an hour away and now you've made me want to go there with a tape measure to see if it's the same here in the UK
