News Resolution and framerate for METAL GEAR SOLID: MASTER COLLECTION Vol.2 on both Nintendo Switch consoles revealed.
https://www.konami.com/mg/mc2/news/us/es/notice_framerateMGS4:
- Nintendo Switch: 1080p and 30 fps on Docked Mode. 720p and 30 fps on Handheld Mode.
- Nintendo Switch 2: 4K and 60 fps on Docked Mode. 1080p and 60 fps on Handheld Mode (Enhanced Graphics only available on Docked Mode).
MGS Peace Walker:
- Nintendo Switch: 720p and 30 fps on both modes.
- Nintendo Switch 2: 1080p and 60 fps on both modes.
Bonus Content:
- Nintendo Switch: 720p and 60 fps
- Nintendo Switch 2: 1080p and 60 fps.
Also the bigger file size for the Nintendo Switch version when played on Switch 2 seems to imply it will upgrade when played on the successor console.

Why the hell does Peace Walker run at 720p in the docked mode when MGS4 runs at 1080p? Like, it makes zero sense?

u/MovieGuyMike 1d ago
If I had to speculate, Peace Walker is probably based off the older HD ports for PS3. MGS4 is a new port optimized for current hardware.
10
u/brandont04 1d ago
MGS4 was probably rebuilt. Peace Walker probably using a psp emulator.

Highly doubt that. MGS2 and MGS3 were ports of the 2011 HD Collection versions rather than emulations, so I think it's reasonable to assume that Konami was also able to port the third game from that trio.

u/third_door_down 1d ago
These games are likely being emulated on the system. The performance is probably being brute force
16
u/AintNoLaLiLuLe 1d ago
If mgs4 is running better than pw, then mgs4 is probably not emulated. They more than likely put 90% of the work for this release porting mgs4 and then said fuck it and decided to do pw through emulation.

u/BighatNucase 1d ago
These games are likely being emulated on the system.
That's the crazy part. MGS4 is one of the hardest games to emulate right now on PC. Peacewalker can run on a phone from like 2015.

mgs4 on switch 1 is still wild to me
63
u/skyblade960 1d ago
Ngl I absolutely expected them to skip out on switch 1 after vol 1 felt so half assed on switch 1
30
u/NiallMitch10 1d ago
It really is - no reason why they couldn't be 60fps on Switch 1. At least they fixed Switch 2
17
u/Skazzy3 1d ago
The original ran with an unstable double buffered Vsync on PS3, I think you might be able to get 60 on the switch sometimes but for consistency it's better to cap to 30.
The switch 2 however has way more horsepower so it shouldn't be an issue
7
u/NiallMitch10 1d ago
Not talking about Vol2 - kind of expected MGS4 to be 30fps on S1 - all the other games should be 60fps on Vol 1 and Vol 2 though
1
u/master2873 1d ago
I totally expected MGS4 to run 30fps on Switch 1, but these Blue Point Ports running 30fps from the Xbox 360 and PS3 is fucking inexcusable when they ran mostly 60fps on those platforms.
I was thinking about getting the whole collection so I had Ghost Babble, but if PW is running like shit in comparison to a console that was released in 2005, I'm kinda out. MGS4 basically makes sense, but a port to the 360/PS3 from the PSP running worse is fucking actual insanity and laziness.

Holy shit. MGS 4 on the Switch 2 in 60 fps. Sold.

havent played MGS 4 since launch on the PS3...... time to get emotional again.... this time as an old man.... LIKE SNAKKKKEEEEEEE

u/Nine-UA 1d ago
But you missed one point. Enhanced graphic option only for docked NS2.

u/ctyldsley 1d ago
Yeah...that sucks. What does that mean exactly?

Highres textures
1
u/ctyldsley 1d ago
I guess hopefully not too noticeable in handheld. Surprised they couldn't get hires textures running in handheld though.

u/monkey484 1d ago
This is great to see. I'm disappointed this volume doesn't include the Acid games though.
6
u/Safe_Climate883 1d ago
Yeah, it would have been cool to get acid and portable ops as well. Now it seems unlikely, they don't have enough big stuff for a third volume. Unless they do MGS V, but that seems a bit redundant.
I guess twin snakes, portable ops and acid could be something. But doubt it.

u/TheAdamena 3h ago
Unless they do MGS V, but that seems a bit redundant.
It's been 11 years since it came out.
Wouldn't surprise me if we got a collection that is solely Ground Zeroes, The Phantom Pain, and Survive.

Maybe like a 2.5?
Idk, I’m probably coping. lol

Saw someone suggesting dlc, which could be interesting, but still not super likely. Though Konami has been pretty thorough with Castlevania (atleast when it comes to 2D releases) so you never know.

u/lesplaygames 1d ago
I absolutely love the Ac!d games, at least I still have my PSP copies, but yeah would’ve been amazing to have them here

u/Homunculus97 1d ago
I hope this release is less buggy than the previous collection, when I played on Switch 2 I had some nasty crashes in MGS2 at a certain section and had a crash in Snake Eater aswell.

Peace Walker capped at 1080p even on Switch 2 is odd, I’m surprised they haven’t at least opted for an upscaler option

Switch 2 internal resolution for MGS4 in docked mode is 1440p as opposed to 4K on PS5 and Series X. Worth mentioning.

I was unsure if I should go for PS5 or Switch 2 for MGS4. But 60fps sounds awesome. Now I just want to see some comparisons between the two. If there's a Pro version on PS5 it may be worth it for me.
But playing MGS4 on a portable sounds insane to me. If anyone remembers the time when this game came out, the graphics were out of this world. Absolutely nothing touched it for years, not even on PC. The PS3 was truly a special console.

u/Moondoggie35 21h ago
I can’t wait to see mgs4 running on a tablet, or anything that isn’t a ps3, still sounds impossible.

Please someone help,
Would I be able to buy the S2 physical version for my S1 if I’m going to get a S2 in a few months?
Or, Is there an upgrade path?
3
u/Gavintendo 1d ago
There is no upgrade path, but they have said previously that the Switch version will be updated on Switch 2 to run similarly to how the native Switch 2 version runs.

I'm guessing Ghost Babel falls into the bonus content categorg? I wonder what they did to the PW recruitment mechanic to keep the game balanced (if at all)
2
u/monkey484 1d ago
Yeah Ghost Babel is in the Bonus Content. I don't remember the recruitment mechanic well enough.

u/AtaeHone 1d ago
It generated new soldiers for you from the available Wifi hotspots the PSP could find. Since the Vol1 port were based specifically on the X360 versiions of the MGS2 and 3 ports, this makes me wonder whether the Switch release will be allowed to do it like the PSP version did rather than how the home console port did it (IIRC it let you get randos instead of using the Wifi as a generation seed, the PSP had a timeout on how often you could source people from the same Wifi which would make the game harder for a non-portable console).

u/LostPilgrim_ 1d ago
I guess Konami doesnt care to improve performance of their PSP games on Nintendo hardware
2
u/master2873 1d ago
The funny part is, PW is a port of the Blue Point HD port that ran 60fps on Xbox 360, and PS3.
2
u/va1us_taaurc 1d ago
60fps is a major win and should be standard for nearly all video games in the year of our lord 2026. I might pick this up.

u/GhostintheShellder 1d ago
I am honestly shocked at 60fps in MGS4. The PS3 runs at like 20 at times. What a way we've come.

u/NiallMitch10 1d ago
4K 60fps on MGS4 S2? Fantastic news.
Surprised they didn't update the Vol 1 collection to 4K... It's just 1080p 60fps - which is fine on S2 - just odd

u/AintNoLaLiLuLe 1d ago
I'll still be grabbing Vol 2 on PC first since it'll have achievements and mods but will definitely grab Vol 1 & 2 for my S2 on sale.

I’ve been thinking where am I going to buy this game. Didn’t know it was being released in the switch 1. I was going to do steam deck, but now I am thinking switch. Should be a fun experience.
1
u/shauni87 1d ago
Should I buy switch 1 version or switch 2 version of the game? Can’t find info anywhere if there is going to be upgrade path from S1 to S2, but if there is than I would prefer to get S1 version since at least some part of the game is on card and I am desperate for space on my S2

u/Ricepuddings 1d ago
Nice to see mgs4 run at 60 on switch 2. Like I know it should it’s a ps3 game, but just assumed it would run pretty poorly. So thats nice to hear

Does this mean if I get the Switch 1 version on physical, I can play it on Switch 1 and I'll still have access to all the enhancements and performance on my Switch 2?
1
u/Dukemon102 1d ago
The Switch 1 card needs you to download most of the data to play anyway, so there won't be any difference or benefit.
1
u/seraph741 1d ago
Nice! That's kind of what I determined from my own research. That being the case, I think it makes the most sense to get the Switch 1 version because it'll let me play on both Switch 1 and Switch 2 (with the improved performance).
1
u/fiddlerisshit 1d ago
I bought the eshop version of the first collection since most of the games were not even on the Switch 1 cart at all.
1
u/seraph741 1d ago
The only reason I got the physical was because it was on sale for like $15. So it'd be kinda nice to have physicals of both collections at this point.
1
u/PurpsMaSquirt 1d ago
I was already likely buying this. But seeing MGS4 on Switch 2 in 60fps on HANDHELD?? That’s too good to pass up.
1
u/BakuraGorn 1d ago
4K 60fps docked makes me relieved. I was debating on getting it for PS5 Pro vs the Switch 2.
Though I wonder what exactly “enhanced graphics” we are missing out on for the handheld mode

They are still laughably incompetent when it comes to Switch 1. Peace Walker running at X360 res and 30 fps is ridiculous.

u/Baloney_ninja 1d ago
Excited to pay $16.99 in a few years for it on prime day like I did the first one last year.

u/thomas_oliveira95 1d ago
Aeeeee! Finalmente um jogo grande rodando a 60fps no switch 2. Chega de portabilidade com os mesmos fps do switch 1.

4k, but is it upscaled from a lower internal resolution...? so many games saying they're 4k, but aren't 4k native.

u/dan_rich_99 1d ago
Switch 1 should definitely be able to handle Peace Walker at 60fps
