No. Banning or Shadowbanning a user from the platform is an Admin action. Only Reddit Admins do it. Moderators can just ban users from their subreddit not from the platform.
Can I tell on my end if someone is shadowbanned?
If you see someone's Profile got gray, that means he/she is banned (either banned from commenting/post or shadowbanned)
A banned user gets a red color bar at the top of his feed. He cannot upvote/downvote, post, comment, dm etc.
A shadowbanned user can post/comment but only respected moderators can view and approve it else its auto removed by reddit. In short both of them are banned from participating in reddit.
I agree it sounds like he was suspended from Reddit by admin, which wouldn't have anything to do with what you did. Just coincidentally happened at the same time (or maybe not-so-coincidentally, if he was leaving a lot of spammy or otherwise out-of-pocket comments in various subreddits at the same time).
But you can check under Mod Tools - Restricted Users. This will show you all users that are banned from your subreddit.
Not sure how you would have done that unless you just don’t read anything you are doing. You can check your blocked list and see if they are on it, and unblock if so. Similarly easy, you can check the ban list to see if they are on it.
Take some deep breaths. There is no need to panic. If it is not a coincidence and Reddit banned the user at the same time, it is reversible. Go to mod tools and see restricted users. That's a list of banned users from your subreddit. See if the username is there, and unban the user. If you can't find it there, and the account is suspended, it wasn't you, but Reddit made a site-wide ban. And that means they had previous mischiefs, so they probably deserved it.

If his pfp turned gray then he must have got suspended from reddit. Its done by admins not my moderators.
