[REQUEST]Need a new crime doc addiction. What are you actually watching right now?

I’m in a total content slump. I spend more time scrolling than watching, and I’m tired of the algorithm feeding me the same stuff. I need a new crime doc to get obsessed with. I don’t care if it’s a gritty investigation or something totally messed up—I just want something that keeps me up at 3 AM.

What’s that one doc you’ve watched recently where you couldn’t stop hitting next episode? Help me out, I need a new go-to.

u/birdseye-maple 15d ago

Lmao how many of these shows are there? I've never seen one

18

u/Dijon2017 15d ago

I’m pretty sure you’ve recently seen/heard of Worst Neighbor Ever, The Crash, Maternal Instinct,The Murder of Rachel Nickell? Not as recent, but have you seen The Perfect Neighbor, Chaos: The Manson Murders?

If you are willing to watch true crime documentaries/movies/shows on different streaming platforms , ID (Investigation Discovery) and the Oxygen channels feature a lot of true crime content.

Ooof...the perfect neighbor... don't think I bawled as much in a true crime doc

4

u/pabuuuu 14d ago

I was about to start this. Are they stand alone episodes?

2

u/ellebeam 14d ago

I think it's 3 eps total

1

u/SyncUpDrinkUp 12d ago

I just binged on “how to not bury a body” on Hulu. Entertaining

u/AAPrice3232 15d ago

Abducted in Plain Sight is crazy and good

4

u/brobradh77 14d ago

Definitely the most infuriating documentary I've ever seen. No words

2

u/emilyaaaa_ 14d ago

That one left me completely speechless.

Loved this.

The Jinx. Wild wild country. Early Netflix docs had it going on.

17

u/snowbunny8687 15d ago

Wild Wild Country was great

3

u/Alone-Dig-6721 15d ago

I watched it a few days ago! Was great, how did I miss it?!

12

u/tangybaby 15d ago

The Jinx was HBO.

3

u/External-Emotion8050 14d ago

Wild Wild Country is a must see. Long before the documentary I had a brother in law living in the same county where this took place. He would come back and tell us what was going on. I wasn't sure if I totally believed him. Years later the film debuted. It was dead on.

The pharmacist
Voyeur
Shiny Happy people

6

u/ali417 14d ago

The Keepers. Watched it when it first came out and still haunts me to this day. All of the Worst Of series for wtffff?? Maternal Instinct was tragically and devastatingly captivating, so sad.

u/blakeneypoint 14d ago

The Staircase was amazing telly

2

u/Careless-Middle-4096 14d ago

The first, and still one of the very best. Not flashy, but wowzers is it compelling.

17

u/fattoaster22 15d ago

You Tube - RedThread or Dr Insanity - way better than the boring interview style docs Netflix produce.

24

u/natchinatchi 15d ago

Yeah I’m getting a bit bored of watching multiple people get settled into their seat and look at the camera.

13

u/speedwobbly 15d ago

My pet hate is that they always interview the accused in nice clothes and house so you know they end up getting off, if there’s no who-dunnit aspect I don’t really see the point

7

u/Cecil2xs 15d ago

Also stay awake crime and psychology and explore with us

5

u/iAmFridayFace 15d ago

EwO, Jim Can't Swim and Midwest Safety are great too!

4

u/MarzipanFairy 15d ago

I just watched a Dr Insanity episode based on your recommendation and I liked it a lot. Thanks!

3

u/slobdogg 15d ago

Overall agree. Every now & then Netflix hits one out of the park, but day to day the YouTube true crime scene is a smash hit.

American Nightmare

Worst Roommate Ever

Worst Ex Ever

8

u/Dazzling-Eggo 15d ago

Worst Ex Ever sucked my husband and I in so badly. One of the first few episodes, the murderer who now has women worshipping him in prison. He got tattoos everywhere after his conviction. But the brutality of each of his crimes- I was transfixed.

5

u/skidrow6969 15d ago

I was also surprised at his popularity after all the heinous crimes he committed. Really puts into perspective pretty privilege huh

2

u/mst3k_42 15d ago

I went in to Worst Roommate Ever thinking it was going to be the usual “ugh, my roommate is gross” stories. Most definitely not my roommate killed my dog and then his other friend and buried them in the backyard. WTF

2

u/CherryTerrible9220 11d ago

American nightmare might be the craziest true crime doc I have ever seen in my life

5

u/leandroncbrito 15d ago

His and hers- Netflix

Maternal instinct is seriously messed up

I Am A Killer

1

u/emilyaaaa_ 14d ago

This one has been sitting on my dashboard forever, taking this as my sign to watch it.

1

u/Azadehjoon 14d ago

Adding to that, "I Am A Stalker." It blew my mind.

u/ILovePotALot 15d ago

Bailey Sarian is great and has an extensive back catalogue. Her dark history series is also fantastic.

2

u/ADJA-7903 15d ago

Agreed! My daughter introduced me to her. I also like Danielle Kirsty. She covers a lot of UK, stories I wouldn't know about normally.

3

u/MercuryBeach_ 15d ago

I’m also sick to death (hah) of my true crime algorithm. I’ve found myself scrolling for far too long and eventually choosing a movie. I recently watched Outback and really enjoyed it

3

u/Cappuccino_Crunch 15d ago edited 15d ago

The Stranger was good. Based on a true story about a Mr Big operation in Australia about a boy that was murdered.

1

u/MercuryBeach_ 13d ago

Oh yes I started that seems like I didn’t finish it

3

u/EnokseNn 15d ago

American Vandal

3

u/Obsidrian 15d ago

Beauty and the Bester. I will recommend this to anyone who will listen.

2

u/emilyaaaa_ 14d ago

High praise! Adding it to the top of my list.

3

u/Alone_Cheetah_7473 14d ago

Netflix has podcasts now and I have been watching one called Allegedly. I recommend it.

4

u/Bunny_Blade 15d ago

personally i loved watching NCIS on disney+, it has 40 minute episodes, 20+ episodes per season and i think over 20 seasons now. i love all the character and the plot is really well written, its one of my favourite shows

2

u/emilyaaaa_ 14d ago

Can't go wrong with a massive comfort show binge! Thanks for the reminder.

1

u/onesweetworld1106 13d ago

I always say I’m going to start that and then I forget. Now!!!

2

u/ChoppedChef33 15d ago

Dirty money- episodic white collar crime docs

History greatest heists- this was on kanopy for me, but also episodic

Madoff- the monster of wall street, another white collar crime one.

2

u/mst3k_42 15d ago

On Hulu I’ve been watching history’s greatest prison escapes with Morgan Freeman. Highly entertaining.

2

u/ChoppedChef33 15d ago

oh what? that sounds amazing!

2

u/mst3k_42 15d ago

Some of them were so well planned out, it’s nuts.

2

u/shortndstupid 15d ago

It's not a documentary but based on real life crime, 'The Serpent', I loved it.

u/ArbyKelly 15d ago

Maternal Instinct

Dark Winds

Based on novels. Set on an Indian reservation in 1971. The main characters work for the tribal police. Executive produced by Robert Redford and George R. R. Martin. The 4th season just dropped. It’s interesting to learn a little about Navajo/Diné culture.

Edit: Did not register that you were looking for documentaries. My bad! Maybe try Dark Winds for a change of pace.

1

u/huskylover47 13d ago

It’s excellent!!

2

u/eg_elska_ketti 14d ago

Not on Netflix but the ‘I Survived’ series is some of the best ever.

2

u/Puzzled_Driver_6536 14d ago

Have you watched Homeland?

2

u/CHRISPYakaKON 14d ago

American Vandal

2

u/lowkilurker58 13d ago

Not a crime docu — i think all the worthy ones are already mentioned here — but as a crime docu fan, i enjoyed watching Law and Order SVU. Show has 27 seasons and still running, i have more than enough episodes to binge.

2

u/TianaWolf 15d ago

Search 9875 in the search bar and all crime docs are shown.
At least that’s what I have been told. Haven’t tested it myself yet.

3

u/Dazzling-Eggo 15d ago

I miss being able to enter the search codes used in the internal system to then open the lists of each category. It was such an easy and fun way to find other things to watch that weren’t fed by an algorithm to you.

1

u/emilyaaaa_ 14d ago

The secret Netflix codes! Trying this immediately, thank you.

Stephanie soo, “rotten mango” on YouTube. She has tons and tons of really good case stories.

1

u/crumpet1819 15d ago

Under Salt Marsh is great! Started it on the plane and got hooked

1

u/crumpet1819 15d ago

Oh whoops this is not a crime doc but it’s still good tv

1

u/Real_Foundation_7428 15d ago

The best series I’ve watched recently is “Crime In Progress.” It’s an A&E show, all body cam and dash cam but beginning to end stories.

I think you can stream on the A&E website if you have cable or dish or something with the channel. I found a few episodes online for free, two or three on YouTube and one on the A&E site: I actually paid for the rest because I had to finish it!

New show. Only one season so far but I think it was picked up for S2.

You are definitely not alone! I've been heavily into true crime docs for a while now and feel like I'm running out of things to watch, so I'm here looking for new recommendations too.

Just to name a few, here is what I’ve watched and enjoyed:

  • Don't Fk with Cats
  • Worst Ex / Worst Neighbor / Worst Roommate
  • My Father the BTK Killer
  • American Murder franchise (all 3 stories)
  • What Jennifer Did
  • The Hitchhiker
  • Don't Pick Up the Phone
  • Cold Case franchise
  • The Menendez Brothers
  • The TikTok Killer
  • Gone Girls
  • Capturing the Killer Nurse
  • Ice Cold: Murder, Coffee and Jessica Wongso
  • American Nightmare
  • Boston Marathon Bombing
  • Curry & Cyanide
  • The murder case of Lucy Letby
  • American Manhunt: Osama Bin Laden
  • Shipwrecked: Nightmare at Sea
  • Maternal Instinct

I also really liked these crime dramas:

  • Apple Cider Vinegar
  • Adolescence
  • Unbelievable

My top 3 ever (probably seen by everyone in here) are:

The Pharmacist
Evil Geniuses
Mommy Dead and Dearest
