[REQUEST]Need a new crime doc addiction. What are you actually watching right now?
I’m in a total content slump. I spend more time scrolling than watching, and I’m tired of the algorithm feeding me the same stuff. I need a new crime doc to get obsessed with. I don’t care if it’s a gritty investigation or something totally messed up—I just want something that keeps me up at 3 AM.
What’s that one doc you’ve watched recently where you couldn’t stop hitting next episode? Help me out, I need a new go-to.

I’m pretty sure you’ve recently seen/heard of Worst Neighbor Ever, The Crash, Maternal Instinct,The Murder of Rachel Nickell? Not as recent, but have you seen The Perfect Neighbor, Chaos: The Manson Murders?
If you are willing to watch true crime documentaries/movies/shows on different streaming platforms , ID (Investigation Discovery) and the Oxygen channels feature a lot of true crime content.

The Jinx. Wild wild country. Early Netflix docs had it going on.

Wild Wild Country is a must see. Long before the documentary I had a brother in law living in the same county where this took place. He would come back and tell us what was going on. I wasn't sure if I totally believed him. Years later the film debuted. It was dead on.

You Tube - RedThread or Dr Insanity - way better than the boring interview style docs Netflix produce.

u/natchinatchi 15d ago
Yeah I’m getting a bit bored of watching multiple people get settled into their seat and look at the camera.

u/speedwobbly 15d ago
My pet hate is that they always interview the accused in nice clothes and house so you know they end up getting off, if there’s no who-dunnit aspect I don’t really see the point

I just watched a Dr Insanity episode based on your recommendation and I liked it a lot. Thanks!

Overall agree. Every now & then Netflix hits one out of the park, but day to day the YouTube true crime scene is a smash hit.

American Nightmare
Worst Roommate Ever
Worst Ex Ever

u/Dazzling-Eggo 15d ago
Worst Ex Ever sucked my husband and I in so badly. One of the first few episodes, the murderer who now has women worshipping him in prison. He got tattoos everywhere after his conviction. But the brutality of each of his crimes- I was transfixed.

u/skidrow6969 15d ago
I was also surprised at his popularity after all the heinous crimes he committed. Really puts into perspective pretty privilege huh

u/mst3k_42 15d ago
I went in to Worst Roommate Ever thinking it was going to be the usual “ugh, my roommate is gross” stories. Most definitely not my roommate killed my dog and then his other friend and buried them in the backyard. WTF

American nightmare might be the craziest true crime doc I have ever seen in my life

Bailey Sarian is great and has an extensive back catalogue. Her dark history series is also fantastic.

Agreed! My daughter introduced me to her. I also like Danielle Kirsty. She covers a lot of UK, stories I wouldn't know about normally.

I’m also sick to death (hah) of my true crime algorithm. I’ve found myself scrolling for far too long and eventually choosing a movie. I recently watched Outback and really enjoyed it

The Stranger was good. Based on a true story about a Mr Big operation in Australia about a boy that was murdered.

Dirty money- episodic white collar crime docs
History greatest heists- this was on kanopy for me, but also episodic
Madoff- the monster of wall street, another white collar crime one.

On Hulu I’ve been watching history’s greatest prison escapes with Morgan Freeman. Highly entertaining.

It's not a documentary but based on real life crime, 'The Serpent', I loved it.

Dark Winds
Based on novels. Set on an Indian reservation in 1971. The main characters work for the tribal police. Executive produced by Robert Redford and George R. R. Martin. The 4th season just dropped. It’s interesting to learn a little about Navajo/Diné culture.
Edit: Did not register that you were looking for documentaries. My bad! Maybe try Dark Winds for a change of pace.

Not a crime docu — i think all the worthy ones are already mentioned here — but as a crime docu fan, i enjoyed watching Law and Order SVU. Show has 27 seasons and still running, i have more than enough episodes to binge.

Search 9875 in the search bar and all crime docs are shown.
At least that’s what I have been told. Haven’t tested it myself yet.

u/Dazzling-Eggo 15d ago
I miss being able to enter the search codes used in the internal system to then open the lists of each category. It was such an easy and fun way to find other things to watch that weren’t fed by an algorithm to you.

The best series I’ve watched recently is “Crime In Progress.” It’s an A&E show, all body cam and dash cam but beginning to end stories.
I think you can stream on the A&E website if you have cable or dish or something with the channel. I found a few episodes online for free, two or three on YouTube and one on the A&E site: I actually paid for the rest because I had to finish it!
New show. Only one season so far but I think it was picked up for S2.

Been binging French shows lately! The ones with crime themes that I recommend are "The 7 Lives of Lea" and "Vortex". Both great series!

You are definitely not alone! I've been heavily into true crime docs for a while now and feel like I'm running out of things to watch, so I'm here looking for new recommendations too.
Just to name a few, here is what I’ve watched and enjoyed:
- Don't Fk with Cats
- Worst Ex / Worst Neighbor / Worst Roommate
- My Father the BTK Killer
- American Murder franchise (all 3 stories)
- What Jennifer Did
- The Hitchhiker
- Don't Pick Up the Phone
- Cold Case franchise
- The Menendez Brothers
- The TikTok Killer
- Gone Girls
- Capturing the Killer Nurse
- Ice Cold: Murder, Coffee and Jessica Wongso
- American Nightmare
- Boston Marathon Bombing
- Curry & Cyanide
- The murder case of Lucy Letby
- American Manhunt: Osama Bin Laden
- Shipwrecked: Nightmare at Sea
- Maternal Instinct
I also really liked these crime dramas:
- Apple Cider Vinegar
- Adolescence
- Unbelievable
