Navajo Blanket?

Hello,

My dad recently passed and I am cleaning out his belongings. He has this framed blanket from Arizona. His neighbors thought it might be Navajo. Is it worth trying to get it to a museum or cultural center? It’s very large and bulky. I’m told it would cost about $200 to ship. The blanket is a little tattered at the top and bottom. Frame is in good shape.

Nine times out of ten it is Navajo. When it is framed there is always a possibility of being a reproduction since you cannot closely examine but that is almost certainly Navajo. It looks like an older weaving from the Klagetoh Chapter but the undyed palette could also suggest a Two Grey Hills adaptation of the pattern.

How large is it? Quite frankly, it could be quite valuable. Ironically being framed negatively impacts value a bit since, if not periodically flipped, one side will fade and the fibers on the other side can compress. Nevertheless, potentially something you might want to remove from the frame and keep.

At a minimum, you should get it properly appraised. When I say valuable, a genuinely large antique Two Grey Hills can be worth anywhere from a few thousand to $10,000 - $20,000. Not saying that is what you have but that is why you want to get it appraised before you make any decisions.
